More federal funding for ACORN despite indictments

Examiner Editorial

Under the guise of due process concerns, congressional Democrats have opened the way for organizations with criminal histories to gain greater access to taxpayer funds. Exhibit A here is the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN), now under investigation in at least 14 states for voter registration fraud.

Earlier this month, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Rep. Barney Frank, D-MA, sponsored an amendment to the $140 million Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act. The Frank measure allowed organizations being investigated by state or federal authorities on corruption charges to receive federal funds as long as they avoid conviction. Frank argued that his amendment, which was approved by the House, protected the presumption of innocence in federal spending.

But federal ethics rules have long stipulated that either an actual or apparent conflict of interest can put a government employee at risk of prosecution for ethics violations.  So, if the Frank amendment becomes law, the federal government will have a double standard, ignoring the presumption of innocence for its employees with apparent conflicts of interest, but extending the presumption to its funding recipients.

ACORN claims to be non-partisan, but it and its many affiliates have ardently supported Democratic incumbents and candidates at all levels of government. For example, the Obama campaign in 2008 paid more than $880,000 to Citizen Services Incorporated, an ACORN affiliate that helps organize get-out-the-vote efforts that always seem to focus on heavily Democratic precincts. Seen in this light, the Frank amendment has the look of a pay-back from grateful Democrats, especially since, as The Examiner has previously reported, ACORN is eligible for billions of dollars under the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has crafted legislation to block ACORN from receiving such funding, but Frank and his Democratic colleagues are determined to block her effort. Only four Democrats voted against Frank’s amendment, which overturned an earlier amendment from Bachmann that would have precluded ACORN from receiving funds. This means 245 House members are on record supporting – or are unconcerned – about federal funding going to groups suspected of criminal behavior.  “It is not only legitimate for Congress to decide the threshold for accessing taxpayer funds; it is incumbent upon us to do so,” Bachmann said. “And, for far too long, Congress has cavalierly distributed taxpayer money.” This is a shameful abdication of our fiduciary duties.” We couldn’t agree more.

By now ACORN's malevolent desire to undermine the democratic process via voting fraud, graft, and embezzlement should be perfectly clear to all. Knowing this, any politician who votes our money to fund this criminal group obviously is one who has no moral scruples, and, unsurprisingly, this same politician is also one to engage in abuse of pork barrel spending and ignore or perpetrate other violations of the law and the Constitution. Such politicians are the reasons that America's republic is starting to founder, and all such vermin should be voted out of office.

At what point would the citizens of this country be prosecuted for overthrow of the government while trying to prevent the overthrow that is now being done big-time by our elected "officials"? The elected officials of this country have drawn a line in the sand - they will do as they please, regardless of the will of the people. This is NOT AMERICAN. At what point can we the citizens reclaim our own country? Please do not answer "do it at the ballot box" - it is impossible to outvote cemeteries. The ballot has been forever tainted, and besides that, I have doubts we will ever have another election. Our electeds and their criminal cohorts have already seen how far they can go without penalty - why should they want to bother with an election? What would prevent them from just announcing "there will be no further elections"?

It's time to require TERM LIMITS on Congressmen. They no longer represent the American people; they only focus on their own selfish needs.

You are right. No one in Washington is listening. They hide behind their big stone buildings and gatherings at cocktail parties, and make their private deals.

I was against the protests at private homes of executives, but now I wonder if peaceful, law-abiding gatherings outside of lawmakers' homes across the nation would make them notice the seriousness of our outrage.

to tassie, the people of this country have as much courage as nancy pelosis marsh mouse. if this were not true, there would have been more than ten million people at the tea partys on the 15th of april.the only thing that gives us any hope is the fact crap and trade, along with the white house cover up of acorn really starting to tick people off, along with the way they bought out chrysler, and gave it to the unions, who along with general electric, own obambi.people are starting to wake up,and realize the kool aid is drowning our future, and on independence day,the 4th of july,we will stand together once again, and maybe more will care enough about this country, and stand together, and say we will not be servants to an out of control government.this will be a chance to make the kind of history that made samuel adams, and so many others proud.

I would love to see a GOP ticket in 2012 with Bachmann running for President and Palin as the VP.

I hope, The Examiner and other knowledgeable outlets online, on the air, and in print, begin to concentrate on the criminality running rampant in DC.Various
forms of words, such as 'criminal','crime','fraud',' theft',etc.have to be employed, time and again, when appropriate, especially, because I do not think, these elected
self-anointed elite understand, or know, anymore what is right from wrong, or legal and /or ethical, as opposed to illegal, corrupt and criminal, immoral, or amoral. The misappropriated funding for earmarks and political paybacks to criminal enterprises and to groups and people subverting our Nation, adds to the debt and deficit, and is necessitating higher taxes, or redistribution of wealth, as they say.
Billions for a non-essential criminal organization ,such as ACORN must be overtly hammered, everywhere, day in and day out.Does Frank want to be brought down in an investigation of ACORN and its sub-groups?

Our government is now being run by Union style thugs.
After years of far left ideas, taught in our schools, I fear we no longer have citizens that give a rip about the Country and her founding fathers ideals.

Sarah Palin has bigger bxxxs than anyone in Washington. That is why the progressives, liberals and other freaks on the left hate her so much. She is the exact opposite of who they are and they pale in comparison.
