Now will Congress investigate ACORN?

Examiner Editorial
October 4, 2009

Evidence continues to accumulate from far and wide that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now is lousy with corruption. The latest revelations come from Louisiana and Oklahoma. In the former, the local ACORN Housing Corp. office received contracts worth a combined $625,000 from the City of New Orleans for repairing existing low-income housing and developing new units in poor neighborhoods. The contracts were paid for with funds from federal Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. An investigation by the Pelican Institute think tank of New Orleans, however, found that no work was actually performed to fulfill the contracts. Worse, Pelican couldn't talk to the ACORN official managing the contracts because he had left the organization months ago. One more thing: The office address listed on the contracts for ACORN turned out to be a vacant lot, although new plumbing connections indicated a trailer had recently been located on the site.

Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, documents found in a recently vacated ACORN office included a detailed memo titled "Power Plan" for a five-year effort to elect supportive legislators and transform Oklahoma to a progressive state "in the way it was 100 years ago." The man in charge of the office left town without paying back rent or utility bills, according to OklahmaWatchdog.org. Also found in the documents was a script for a Houston ACORN-directed recruiting campaign for "hiring Outreach Workers to remind people to get out and vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming election." As a tax-exempt nonprofit, ACORN is barred from participating in partisan election activities, and its national spokesmen have insisted throughout the 2008 presidential race that their organization was not working to elect Obama.

These revelations come hard on the heels of the sensational videotapes showing ACORN employees in Baltimore, New York and San Diego giving advice on concealing a brothel featuring 13-year-old girls smuggled here from Latin America. Congress is considering measures to stop any more federal funds from going to ACORN after an Examiner investigation found the group has received at least $53 million in recent years. More than a dozen states are investigating allegations of improper election activities by ACORN. Now, with evidence of apparent theft of federal grant money and blatantly partisan political work, what else must be exposed before Congress gets off the dime and conducts a full-fledged investigation?

The investigation, which should occur, will sweep up members of congress and the administration. It's about time.

Does anyone wonder how much of that 53 million went to payroll ? It obviously didn't go toward rent .

Rusty Bill

Oct 4, 2009

Payroll, maybe, but for who, exactly? Certainly not the rank-and-file workers. (Can I say that? After all, ACORN - which supports unions (see SEIU) - fought against it's own workers who wanted to unionize.)

I honestly believe that the government has a RICO case against these clowns, but serioulsy doubt anything will be done. The Obama administration will protect their own.

When untold amounts of money are laid in front of thieves, they will steal it. IT is time to require ACORN AND ALL IT ASSOCIATED ENTITIES to pony up any federal funds they have received, and for the FBI RICO squad to investigate. These jokers make the mafia look like kindergardners. The federal funds they receive are not GOVERNMENT MONEY: these are dollars confiscated by force of legislation from the citizens of this country. They were taken unconstitutionally, they were disbursed unconstitutionally and the people who authorized these funds need to be held ACCOUNTABLE to the voters. No more Commuinity organizing money for anybody from the U.S. Treasury.

ACORN is an extension of the Democrat Party, and likely without them Obama and countless other Dems wouldn't be in office. The media will only report what it cannot avoid, and Congress (the Democrats) and the Justice department will never conduct a serious investigation. Actual transparency might embarrass Dear Leader, and the grubby masses could learn what black community organizers *really* do for their money - and where that money comes from.

RICO - if this does not amount to an onging criminal enterprise... All 12 of the organizations the founder of ACORN started should be investigated. And it should be done so by a special prosecutor.
These organizations are nothing more than paid professionals - field of expertise? Gaming the system. That's another question that needs to be answered - how much money is funneled through all programs and organizations of these types each year? It's about taxfunded gaming of the system.

ggordon

Oct 4, 2009

...oh, and worse. The federal government encourages it through all of their publicity programs - and there are many within government that know all about the gaming. I'm guessing that in some warped way, maybe they think the rich are getting what they deserve by having to fund such frauds.
WHY do we advertise programs of give aways? If someone isn't resourceful enough or motivated enough to go out and find, they don't deserve it!

If Congress is to investigate ACORN, how much more important would it be to investigate the vastly bigger and richer contractors who have misused US funds in Iraq. What about the contractor whose shoddy electrical work actually killed 16 Americans troops there? At least ACORN hasn't killed anyone. What about thoroughly investigating how the Bush/Cheney/Rove gang got us into the unnecessart war in Iraq that has resulted in the deaths of over 4,000 US troops and countless Iraqis, not to mention the billions of US dollars down the drain. And let's investigate how the Bush gang screwed up the search for Bin Laden in Afghanistan, thus bogging us down there. ACORN is insignificant compared to the multiple foulups of the last adminiatration.

The system is trashed it's only a matter of time before people everywhere start to 'disown' the government. We're proud Americans but the government is corrupt and has no rights over us. They steal our money to give to their pawns. . . no more.

If Congress wants to investigate ACORN they had better get their asses in gear while there is still an ACORN to investigate.

MomInLatteland

Oct 4, 2009

Nick - ACORN is not insignificant and the defense of "well, they did it too" just does not cut it. It is far past time for the American PEOPLE to hold their government accountable. I say go ahead and investigate what happened with Iraq but why stop there? ACORN and the corruption which - I believe - leads to the halls of Congress and into the White House is equally as valid. This has nothing to do with being Democrat or Republican but being Americans who should be outraged and appalled at what has been going on in the government.

Jake Gatorman

Oct 4, 2009

Nick, we should go after the shoddy contractors in Iraq too.

But bringing up Iraq during a conversation about ACORN is just an attempt to change the subject.

Hope and Change means we need to do better than that. "Its OK because Bush did it to or was worse" just doesn't fly.

I wonder the outcome of a non ACORN influenced 2008 vote. The Joke of Minnesota would still be cracking wise in Minnesota and there is the distinct possibility we would be cursing at John McCain right now instead of the Emperor of Chicago.

Oct 4, 2009

If the government won't start an investigation maybe someone with integrity in the government will come forward as a whistle blower. There have to be thousands in government service who know or suspect shady dealings and they sit there quietly in their cubicle afraid for their jobs. If only a few would step up we could bring this whole corrupt mess down. Look at what two kids in their 20's did with their sting operation on ACORN.

Genuine investigations and prosecutions will not happen unless the Republicans retake Congress. That's the bottom line.

Again someone finds someone to blame in the Bush administration. Let's shift the focus from the Chicago Politics gone national by blaming the previous administration. I got news for you, they had bio weapons, they used bio weapons and if we weren't fighting them there we'd be fighting them here. Don't be-little what our military has done by saying it is un-necessary. Acorn and it's subsidiaries are the new mafia, backed by the Government. The whole system has been corrupted by unscrupulous politicians and we need to vote them out!

Megyn Kelly of Fox News has a special that's been running this weekend called "The Truth about ACORN." she interviews Wayne Rathke and other ACORN figures.

I remember when Ronald Reagan railed against the welfare system and I was appalled that he thought that people in need shouldn't be helped. This special sets that time in the context of groups that were trying to flood the welfare system to bring about socialist change.

I never heard about that, but Rathke seems to confirm that those tactics were in play. Guess there are always two, or more, sides to every situation.

Maybe some in Congress, such as Mr. Conyers, will finally see the writing is on the wall and stop blocking investigations.

Nothing will happen - not an investigation, not a special prosecutor, nothing - as long as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are the gatekeepers of anything that gets to the floor of the House and Senate, respectively, and Holder is the gatekeeper for DOJ. All we can do is make hay of all the cr*p that's coming out now, and vote to flip Congress next year. THEN, and only then, will we have a prayer of getting investigations going, including impeachment proceedings against Holder.

As for hoping for whistleblowers, what makes you think anyone who knows anything would risk the safety of themselves and their families by coming forward? These people are filth, with lots of money, lots of influence, and absolutely no scruples. Even at that, I can predict an unusual number of convenient deaths within the next few months – or weeks, even - of people who are unfortunate enough to know where the ACORN bodies are buried.

"bama-Oct 4, 2009-everyone needs to go to Eric Holders website and report a crime and waste, fraud and abuse of our tax dollars".

2. You'd suddenly find yourself under investigation for some trumped up BS, and/or the IRS would be at your door.

The media is controlled by the federal government - it's true and it stems from the horror the elites experienced in the 1960's. With the feds still controlling the media and telling them to not look into ACORN, fat chance we have to get anything done on ACORN or SEIU. We have to vote the DEMS out and those Republicans who are "go along to get along" types in 2010. Let's start by contributing to the challengers in NJ and VA who are trying to unseat the DEM governors. Send the DEMS and the grand messiah a strong message that we are coming for them and coming for them we will! People reap what they sow and the DEMS are in for a lickin" in 2010.

angry taxpayer

Oct 4, 2009

Is it possible for the taxpayers to bring civil lawsuits against ACORN for misusing the money that WE GAVE THEM? If taxpayers brought suit at every county, state, and federal court in the country there is no way that media outlets like NBC, ABC, CBS could continue to ignore this story.

I think the Congress members who have oversight responsibility for these different programs should be investigated for why ACORN was given money but then was under no obligation to show how they spent it. Why can't the taxpayers investigate Congress members? It's our money. It's our Congress.

The renegades are running rampant!!! Their closets are locked, their corruption is concealed!!! The "Progressives" have no limitations, the laws governing them are vague and their "Progressive" Media pundits are in full protective spin mode!! Their mode of operation is, if you tell a lie long enough and often enough, then people will believe it must be true!!!! Outlaws are running wild in the halls of the Legislative, Judicial and Executive branches, shredding documents and deleting messages as they go (In my opinion)!!!!!! Of course all the dots connect to reveal the full picture of deceit, along with the names of many influential well known names!!!! That is exactly why they are hesitant to investigate, it involves them and their brain washing techniques!!! I personally love the freedom the Constitution guarantees the individual, much more than I love the teachers or the teachings of the "Progressives", I advise all others to do the same!!!!

DEF

They inspire you to believe they can become your nurturer, take care of your every need, all it takes is for you to transfer your troubles from your shoulders to theirs!!! Clean up America, quit hating your neighbor and giving his/her rights away!!!! "United we Stand, Divided we Fall", they are well aware of that fact, it is why they use divisionary tactics to segregate us!!!!!

Oct 4, 2009

My I suggest that all of Congress be investigated for fraud. These clowns have been sucking off the tax payer way to long. Here are the new set of rules.
1. 2 year term limits for all of congress
2. Absolutely no retirement. Return to public sector and earn it.
3. Limit 2 bills each year so they have time to read them.
4. If comvicted of a crime return salary plus interest.
5. Cap on salary at 100,000 per year. Bonus if their state has a surplus of funds for fiscal year.
6. One million dollar cap on election funds to make sure playing field is fair.
7. Manitory jail time of 5 years if the above is not met.

These laws need to take effect in 2010. Let's start a petition today for a brighter tomorrow.

Nick Beddoes: so, they should investigate; the fact that there are corrupt institutions doesn't make ACORN any less disgraceful. It is a stupid argument to say that because some other organization is corrupt, we mustn't investigate ACORN. This is as stupid as saying: "until everyone has a roof over his head we will not build new houses..."

genetics73

Oct 4, 2009

Somehow Nick Beddoes is quick to find ACORN actions insignificant; I think he is dead wrong. I believe that the reason ACORN is being protected by inaction of Congress is that corruption spread from ACORN to SEIU to Chicago to this Administration to this Congress. Speaking of investigations: how about investigating and getting rid of Rangel, Dodd, Franks - their despicable actions in support of Freddie and Fanny, and their being in bed with ACORN have been instrumental in bringing about the current economic crisis. So, Nick Beddoes: everyone is entitled to a little stupidity now and then, but you are abusing the privilege.

As an OIF vet, I hate being used as a poster child for someone's political rants...especially the Left, who claim to "support" me but never actually do anything other than wish for failure.

Incidentally, the contractors I served with were dedicated professionals in a very nasty environment, and couldn't even legally have weapons to defend themselves. Add in that Halliburton completed a $7 billion contract for $20 billion, ahead of schedule, and refunded the difference to the government, Nick's comments are an egregious case of the pot calling the Queen's china black.
