Editorial: Obama hides the whole story

April 24, 2009

Set aside for now the troubling changes in the Obama administration’s position on whether former Bush officials should be prosecuted for suggesting tough interrogation tactics against terrorists. Set aside the manifest unfairness of prosecuting lawyers merely for doing their job of giving legal advice. Set aside the raft of other reasonable objections to the proposed prosecutions, including a justifiable aversion to witch-hunts.

Instead, consider how flagrantly President Barack Obama violated his repeated promises that he would run a transparent and honorable administration. His administration’s selective and highly prejudicial release of only partial information about CIA interrogations clearly was designed to gin up outrage against former Bush officials. The release of the information was a pure political hit job masquerading as an act of openness.

The administration ignored near-uniform pleadings by respected intelligence professionals to keep the interrogation descriptions classified, yet refused to declassify the evidence that the interrogations saved countless American lives. Obama highlighted the alleged sins while withholding (often directly redacting) the context, the justifications, and the practical benefits gained. Then his administration went even farther. Not only did it refuse to declassify the exculpatory intelligence, but also it selectively and misleadingly edited a memo by its own national intelligence director about the program.

As reported by the New York Times’ Peter Baker, intelligence director Dennis Blair wrote a memo that included these lines: “High value information came from interrogations in which those methods were used and provided a deeper understanding of the al Qa’ida organization that was attacking this country.” Baker then reported: “Admiral Blair’s assessment that the interrogation methods did produce important information was deleted from a condensed version of his memo released to the media last Thursday. Also deleted was a line in which he empathized with his predecessors who originally approved some of the harsh tactics after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.”

That last deleted line read as follows: “I like to think I would not have approved those methods in the past,” he wrote, “but I do not fault those who made the decisions at that time….”

Without Baker’s reporting, those highly important judgments by Obama’s own appointee would have been buried from public view, thus stacking the deck against those whom Blair would absolve. Such dishonesty from a White House borders on the Nixonian – and violates every reasonable American’s innate sense of justice.

Cut the b.s.
Bush lied about torture. Period. Stop the B.S. The Library tower incident was "foiled" prior to torture ever being initiated. We were attacked while Bush was in office and attacked in Spain and Britain after 911. Why did we not learn about this though our torture policy? Obama did not want this but he too is not above the law. Sean Hannity said he would be waterboarded for charity because he feels its not torture. I can't wait to see that coward waterboarded. As Rachel McCain said about Rove and Cheney, go away. You had your turn. She is speaking for the young Republicans. Listen.

Give it a rest.

Another thing: Cheney, Republicans and FOX pendants constantly accuse Democrats of emboldening our enemies and undermining our troops with their rhetoric about the Bush administration? How, then, to explain - other than as either rampant, partisan hypocrisy or treasonous sentiments they near-nightly accusations that President Barrack Obama is a radical socialist who hates America? Furthermore, since they supposedly believe that the release of the Bush torture memos has helped our enemies wouldn't the same be true of national news people constantly announcing that the country is more vulnerable to attacks now? Torture, according to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, is: any act by which severe pain or suffering ether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a male or female person for such purposes as obtaining information from him.

Grow up and stop being so naive.

Imagine a time when Obama is informed of an imminent horrific attack on U.S. civilians. It would do horrendous political damage, especially when Americans learn there was a newly detained conspirator who had full knowledge of the attack details.

Do you really think Obama wouldn't authorize whatever was necessary? He would certainly want to avoid the political damage. And he's provided a nice cover...protecting American lives...that gives the bonus of making him a hero!

If you think he wouldn't take it....I'll sell you the Brooklyn Bridge (if it's still there).

And now it was confirmed yesterday by FBI Director Mueller that "No Plots Were Foiled by Enhanced Interrogation", the allegation that the use of Water-boarding (183 Times) against Khallid Sheik Mohammad helped foil "Second Wave" terrorist attacks against the U.S. such as the alleged plan to use planes to bring down the Library Tower in Downtown Los Angeles, appears to just simply be impossible.

The Library Tower plot was foiled in February of 2002, while KSM wasn't even captured until over a year later in March 2003. So how did water boarding him stop a plot that was already stopped? This might had gone away is the fool Cheney did not go on the air talking about we are less safe under Obama. He's the former Vice President. Why is he still in Washington?

And you next smoke screen, attack Pelosi. So transparent.

Clearly Obama is far more transparent than the secretive, incompetent, corrupt Bush administration. As Nobel laureate Paul Krugman pointed out in today's New York Times, "The only way we can regain our moral compass, not just for the sake of our position in the world, but for the sake of our own national conscience, is to investigate how [torture] happened, and, if necessary, to prosecute those responsible."

Examiner Poll Question today:

Should the Bush administration be investigated over CIA interrogation memos?

Yes, Do it now: 7%

No, move on: 92%

Don't care: 0%
***********************
If it was the Obama administration the results would be the opposite. Its just politics as usual. PRESIDENT BUSH LIED. PERIOD.

Good day

Hey GWS. Go to the library and get yourself a history book. Turn to the chapter of Japanese intern camps. That's right, right here in good ole USA. Oh, guess who ordered that good, hardworking Japanese American Citizens be uprooted, their property confiscated, and their freedom obliterated. Not to mention the thousands of claims of rape, and torture they were subject to--just for being Japanese. That's right FDR--good ole elastic legs. Now, last I checked he is a super champion of the Democratic party. Perhaps you can't read--huh!

Sick of this Nonsense

Apr 24, 2009

Obama has lied about what he will do, what he has done and what he is doing now. You're fools to believe he will do anything different. He didn't want the "good ole boy" atmosphere, but that's exactly how he is operating. Transparent?...he doesn't know the meaning; that's why we have pork, taxes and more pork. Get your heads out of the sand. You all act like you were there at the table when all these decisions were made....you know nothing and quit trying to act like you do.

GWS: the authority on all things wacko. It's common knowledge that Pres Bush kept this country safe for 8 years. You just can't stand the fact that he did. And THAT is what's so transparent. You are so predictable.

All this is put out there to hide the fact that ob's policies are not going well or failing and this takes the lesser minds off that fact. Their aim is to liberalize the country. God help us as we're sure going to need more than just THE ARMED FORCES!!!!

The President will only stop when the democrats get bit by the same special proscecutor the he selected for the investigation. He & the democrats want to get back at the republicans for the past impeachment. They could not do it in the last 2yrs so now they going to trying. Mr Obama & the leaders of congress better start a defense fund because this payback is not going to stop with the Bush presidency. These hearing are going to be the mother of yoyos for the future of political parties.

Is it really possible to torture the perpetrator of 9/11 ?
If a president did not do everything possible to protect this country he should be impeached , and put in prison at the least. He should willingly assume this possibility or he is not up to the job.

To the young Democrats: This is leadership as defined by an old Democrat before the liberals/socialists controlled your party, and before moveon.org.
“How far would Moses
have gone if he had taken
a poll in Egypt? What would
Jesus Christ have preached if he had taken a poll in the land of Israel? What would have happened to the Reformation if Martin Luther had taken a poll? It isn’t polls or public opinion of the moment that counts. It’s right and wrong and leadership.”
~ Harry Truman

I know many people believe Bush lied. They might be right. Maybe he did. Unfortunately, we don't have any proof of this, just conjecture.

On the other hand, we already have Obama lying on record at least a half a dozen time on campaign promises and through omission such as these memos, and perhaps the most overtly hostile administration to its perceived political "enemies" since Nixon (and it's only the first 100 days!).

But they're upset because they THINK Bush lied?

Something tells me their moral compass might be influenced by their ideology.

The country has been morphed into the Israelites at the base of Mt. Sinai with the Golden Calf in the White House - whew -narcissism personified; bordered on the north, south, east, west . . .I bet he looks in the mirror each morning and says: "aren't I good?

If we could get over all the adulation and idolatry going on in the country possibly sane people could sit down and pass some legislation that has earthly value.

Keep in mind those writing comments on this site as well as my self are still safe and alive . ..for the past eight years . ..maybe in the case of the end justifies the means . .. well, we can't have a Jesuit debate on that right now.

When is America going to wake up/ 62% of polled say obama is on the right track. 62% of those polled are just plain stupid. He & other top democrats have already done more to hurt the country than the communist party has done in the past 50 years. One controvirisal issue after another to cover up the last "CHANGE". All socialist "chamges'. The communists have got tolove the SOB.

I Smell Jealousy

Apr 26, 2009

The fact that President Obama has done in 100 days (with intelligence, courage and common sense), what Republican presidents could not do in their entire term(s)is really making the republican faithful (what's left of them) squeal like stuck pigs (perhaps this is evidence of early cases of swine flu)!

The truth stings doesn't it.

"President Obama has done in 100 days"

Divide the country over the issue of enhanced interrogation?

Quadruple the dificit?

Expand rendition?

Deny rights to detainees at Bagram?

Apologize for America while defending himself?

Yeah, that's quite a record.

Highlander

Apr 27, 2009

H Mitchell,

No, 62% of Americans do not believe we are headed in the right direction - because that poll is heavily skewed towards liberals. Only 18% of those polled identified themselves as Republicans. Propaganda, pure and simple.

This faux outrage over the waterboarding is political theatre pure and simple. One more specious rationale for bringing Bush up on "war crimes" charges...what a crock of sh*t. Pelosi is so stupid she can't even lie convincingly. More to the point, this "concern" over torture is pretty rich coming from the party that fights tooth and nail to allow the murder of thousands of unborn babies every year.
The country is in the best of hands.

George Bush took over a surplus, reduced taxes on the rich, engaged us in two wars, never added the cost of those wars to the deficit but still managed to throw this country into debt. I am not debating the wars but the fact that they weren't placed on the books. The borrow and spend policy did not work. Has never worked. His energy policy failed. all it did was drive up prices and padded his cronies pockets. And his foreign policy failed. I will not grade Obama yet. It's been too short of time in office.

Apr 27, 2009

If waterboarding is "torture" then we are "torturing" our volunteer special ops forces who experience the process as a way of reinforcing their confidence if they fall into enemy hands and are waterboarded. For some, full blown torture is having to contemplate anything that is inconvenient.

Apr 28, 2009

Now let's see...waterboarding (no death) vs. late term abortion (death and innocent). Waterboarding is it like hazing?
