Palin is far from gone

Examiner Editorial

July 6, 2009

Pundits have had a field day speculating about what's really behind Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's Friday announcement that she will shortly resign. The consensus seems to be that she has not helped her prospects for seeking national office in 2012 and thereafter, if she has not given up such hopes altogether, and that she acted mainly in angry and frustrated response to the incessant drumbeat of ridicule and false rumor that has enveloped her and her family since the 2008 presidential campaign. As usual with Palin, the conventional wisdom simply doesn't get it. That much ought to be clear to anybody who reads what Palin said without assuming that there must be more, or less, to it than meets the eye.

Two points stand out from Palin's statement Friday and her follow-up Facebook post. First, she intends to be even more of a national political force in the future, though doing so doesn't necessarily require that she seek the White House in 2012. As Palin put it, she plans to "work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and life. ..."

She sees this effort as one that transcends the two major political parties, so she will support "others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the right reasons, and I don't care what party they are in or no party at all. Inside Alaska or outside Alaska." Those in the mainstream media and the political parties who have sought to silence her have now succeeded in all but ensuring Palin a prominent place on the national political scene for years to come.

Second, things will be different in the future for Palin's critics who have heretofore been able to launch the most scurrilous attacks on her without fear of consequences. As she said in her Facebook statement: "The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the 'politics of personal destruction.' How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country."

When her critics go after Palin in the future, they will simply be giving her another opportunity to point out their detachment from the realities of everyday life for most Americans. What her critics mean to tear her down, she will use to build up a national movement.

Good Lord, I hope this editorial is right. We need someone like her. I am surprised when I type this, but it is true. A real spokeswoman for free enterprise and smaller government. Count me in!

A note to all the elite, snobs in D.C., NYC, etc....to have treated Gov. Palin, and her family the way you have, shows to me, the complete contempt you have for those of us, that live in "fly over" country!

You only want our votes and money, therefore, we will cease at once, we will stop supporting snobs that take our money and refuse to listen to "We the People".

Our advice to all of you, grow up and stop acting like you are still the Prom Queen & King in high school!

Palin would be a wonderful fund raiser and promoter of other candidates. The woman is talented but her talents haven't been fully utilized. She may not be ready to run, but she could be a great help to other candidates. The Left would hate her even more!

I can't wait for 2010! Palin has this one in the bag and it will be nice to have a real conservative with REAL conservative values.
The republican rhinos, like McCain and Gramnesty Graham had better watch out; playing both sides will no longer work. Mrs. Palin is out of step with you and that is even better for the country,,,

I must admit, she has some loyal fans. So she is a true conservative huh?
Talk about cut and run, just show her the money and she's gone.

So the consensus is in, huh? Is that consensus anything like the one that the global warming whackos said that they had? Consensus isn't news people... give us some facts for a change!

No one in DC can see that the Conservative movement needs a leader. What a ideal time for Sarah. Raise funds, take on the Obama administration, get conservatives elected. Don't count out '12 yet. The libs are frightened of this woman from our frontier. One other great president was ridiculed for being a hay seed.

I agree, Sarah Palin is just gettin warmed up and she ain't done yet...U Betcha!!! I think a book is already in the works, she would really be 'hot' on the lecture circuit, and she will definitely be a big help for our cause in both the Senate and House for 2010. Her and 'Joe the Plumber'...plus the 'Tea Parties' ain't no joke for sure!!!

Good Lord. Your newspaper is so bias it won't even publish opposing points of views in the comments field. I think you are going a little overboard about Saint Sarah. I don't think she is feared. She is exciting to the base which is ok but she should be honest and just say she wants to get out of politics, its too overwhelming and she wants a better life for herself and her children. Instead, she presents herself as some kind of martyr who has been called by God to perform a moral obligation to save the United States and the world.

I'd like to affirm Dave LeBlanc and rebut Greg: The liberal attacks upon Governor Palin represent the political warfare instincts of turf-war defense by pro-active assault withthe deadliest weapon that is quaisi-legal in America: slander and villification. She verges on being made by them into a modern "Joan of Arc." Some would like to burn her at the stake - if they could get away with it.

Actually, Greg, you have it all wrong. I think you meant just show the money to liberals and they're all gone. Name ONE liberal elite who would be willing to give all their money to the poor and downtrodden that they CARE SO MUCH about? With the Obamas and Clintons as money hungry as you can get, I guess it's understandable why liberals can't understand someone like Pallin who is walking away from power.

flicka -
The Obamas and the Clintons weren't born with a silver spoon in the mouth like the two Bushes. BTW, do you know ONE republican elite who would be willing to give all his/her money to the poor and downtrodden? Check W's tax form for charity giving? Furthermore, do you ANYbody willing to give all his/her money away for ANY reason?

Careful Ida, your ignorance is showing. If you're talking about charitable giving between the Bush 43 and Clinton Administrations consider Cheney and his wife donated over $2 million dollars to charity while Al Gore donated less than $500 dollars. Also consider Bill Clinton considered used underwear a charitable donation.

Numerous studies have shown people that consider themselves conservative are more generous with their own money than people who consider themselves liberal.

Remember, a liberal's generosity is only limited by your income.

Palin's ignorance shows like the bra straps of a trailer park trash K-Mart queen. Oh wait! That's a pretty good description of her too. Being a celeb doesn't guarantee brains or ability and this has been proven more than once in her case. I suppose a country that idolizes a pedophile deserves nothing less than an ignorant white trash bimbo as president.
