Make UAW Sell its Championship Golf Course Before a Bailout

By: EXAMINER EDITORIAL HOT ZONE

December 16, 2008

A view of the finely groomed Black Lake golf course owned by the UAW. ((Michigan Golf))

What do UAW executives and workers do to relax? They play golf at the union’s highly touted championship caliber Black Lake Golf Club, designed by Rees Jones. The UAW golf club is in secluded Onaway, MI, as part of the union’s Walter and Mary Reuther Family Education Center. Also part of Black Lake are a learning center, a practice facility with practice bunkers, chipping and putting greens, and a small, nine-hole par-three Little Course.

Golf Digest named Black Lake as one of top “upscale public courses.” And Michigan Golf described the course as a “classic” that includes “wide, well-groomed fairways [that] provide ample room for big hitters.” But some big hitters get special privileges at Black Lake. Tee times can be reserved up to two weeks in advance by UAW execs, compared to only three days for non-UAW duffers. Cost to play Black Lake is $95 per round.

Remember all the much-deserved bad press Detroit’s high-paid Big Three executives received last month when they flew in their corporate jets to beg Washington for a tax-paid bailout? Has anybody in Congress or the media bothered to ask UAW head Ron Gettelfinger about his union’s assets and perks like Black Lake Golf Club?

As head of one of the nation's most powerful unions, Gettelfinger doesn't earn nearly as much as Detroit's top CEOs. GM's Rick Wagoner, for example, made more than $14 million last year. But Gettelfinger's total compensation of nearly $160,000 annually far exceeds the U.S. median gross family income of $61,500 and puts him among the top five percent of all tax filers, according to U.S. Census Bureau and IRS data.

And the UAW is anything but poor, with net assets reportedly worth an estimated $1.23 billion. UAW membership has been declining for years, as it has for most major unions, but annual income from member dues, interest and other revenues exceeded $300 million in 2006.

UPDATE:

Michelle Malkin does some digging and comes up with a bunch more information, including a Detroit News investigation that found the Black Lake course is a big money loser for the UAW.

I wonder how many UAW members actually play that course in a year's time? Probably not many

YES! and the exec need to take a pay cut and cut the price of the cars!

There is alot wrong with the union-early retirement, pay even if you don't work, etc.-but if the course is making money for the union what is the problem? Jets are an expensive perk and I don't bbelieve they are paying for themselve and are very expensive to maintain.

The UAW is a bunch of useless slugs who could not survive without a union. Unions are worse than communists, deprive people of motivation.

beefrank

Dec 16, 2008

Unions are just like communism where the common workers provides the dues and the union execs live comfortably in their dachas with their luxury golf courses. The bailout is for the UAW, not the auto company. If the CEOs had the stones, they would declare Chap 11 and force negotiations with the UAW or hire non-union workers.

And union members wonder what happens to their dues. Disqusting.

To the Big 3 and UAW, what's wrong with filing Chapter 11? Many major companies and industries have done so and have come out strong. Take a look at the Steel and Airline Industries. Why bailout the Unions with guaranteed job security, wages, benefits and pensions with my tax dollars.

I am trying to figure out why it is ok for a businessman to earn whatever it is they earn but if a union person makes more than the median of a US household, it is wrong. What's up with that? There are way too many hypocracies in these editorials that attack unions.

we have been time paying UAW bills by buying chevy. let the UAW bailout GM, maybe they will get a better idea what it takes to run a company with profit. no more chevy here.

Why didn't the media raise any of these perk issues with banks and bank execs? Wasn't THAT a $700 billion bailout? The press is clearly anti-union and clearly anti-blue collar!!

""I am trying to figure out why it is ok for a businessman to earn whatever it is they earn but if a union person makes more than the median of a US household, it is wrong. What's up with that? There are way too many hypocracies in these editorials that attack unions." It's fine to earn a salary above the median household income IF YOUR HAVE SKILLS. The executives presumably went to college. The engineers did too. The UAW workers graduated high school and have a job that requires on the job training. The existence of the UAW and other unions encourages students to not acquire advanced education because why bother when you can earn $30/hour with no skills.

Dec 17, 2008

have known so many retired employees of the big three but have not heard they talked about golfing at their UAW golf course. they have to see it and lower the dues.

Dec 17, 2008

I agree with Jim. While there are some excesses in unions as everywhere else, for someone to suggest that unions are just like communism clearly shows that they know nearly nothing about either.

jim

Dec 17, 2008

James: you are lumping people together or stereotyping. How do you know if UAW workers are without skills? I am with the IBEW. I have an Associates Degree in Electrical Technology and a Bachelors Degree. Just because I am in a union, would you have thought I only had a high school diploma? Even if the exec's and engineers have college degrees, the company they work for is going to train them the way they want to. I have to ask; are you envious of the $30/hr. If you don't make $30, why not? If you do, good for you, but why berate someone who does? Someone else had a good comment above; you never saw any of these perk issues for wall street. Why are they an issue for main street?

Dec 17, 2008

Well, those union members who are in the jobs bank need something to do on their "days off"...

Dec 17, 2008

If the author if this article of Michelle Malkin had actually done any investigating, they'd mention that the course was making a profit when it was built and that for the last five (5) years, the UAW has been trying to sell the course.

Black Lake GC is one of 15 - 30 outstanding golf courses in Norther Lower Michigan open to the public for rates of about $75. As part of groups of 8 or 12 golfers, I've played it twice and really enjoy the test it offers. Virtually all of these courses struggle to make money-due to overall economic reasons. The UAW provides this for all employees and offers a large campground for families.Value is way below cost. Few other buildings aside from the clubhouse exist onsite. As a non-auto conservative I feel GM has quality autos, have been weak in negotiations for 20 years, and provides too many lifetime benefits. Workers should lean on medicare more, provide for their own retirement benefits via 401k, and move quickly to match Corker's terms/conditions. Too bad - the long held attitude is to not "give in" to the companies even if they fold.

Dec 17, 2008

Surely for $14 million another CEO could be found to do a better job - perhaps someone from Honda or Toyota. And for the amount of money the Government is providing the big three, they could retool the plants into Toyota, Honda, Kia, etc plants. Right now we are throwing good money after bad

Rich

Dec 17, 2008

I wanted to point out an inaccuracy in the article. It states in the article that "UAW execs" can make tee times two weeks in advance, when in fact I'm pretty sure it's any UAW member or retiree that can make a tee time two weeks in advance. Per the Black Lake website, UAW members receive a 20% discount and UAW retirees receive a 30% discount. I don't consider that to be that large of a discount.

If you work hard and do a good job you don!t need a union to represent you

jim

Dec 18, 2008

charles: what if you work hard in an environment that does not give a hoot about its employees? I am sure there are many who work hard in a sweat shop and do a good job. They are also subject to poor lighting, unsafe working conditions, poor pay, no health insurance, and no retirement hopes. What do you do then charles?

Dec 18, 2008

I will never buy another american made car

james a

Dec 18, 2008

I am not a union member and I would never buy a foreign car. Unquestionably, there are excesses in unions, corporations (like all these to-be-bailed-out banks), and any other bureacracies. But the gains won by unions -- higher wages, improved working conditions and better across-the-board health care coverage -- have certainly trickled down to us white-collar folks who have not had to pay union dues. I thought Toyota and Honda were both very pro-union for their plants in Japan....

observent one

Dec 19, 2008

Ok? Heres a GOOD one! I live near a GM plant here in NY. Why is it that over half the employees cars I see are NOT Gm Ford or Chrysler? Even worse?> Most of my customers who are rapidly retiring (by years or management) Make a point of bringing me outside an showing me their "new" retirement car or truck. Yep,, Not a single one has been the Big Three? What does it say about our leadership an pride if we dont buy the product we make? YET> Theres a BIG sign at every entrance,,, BUY AMERICAN Your job depends on it,,,

Mike Vert

Dec 19, 2008

...And they talk about the "country club republicans?

HJD

Dec 19, 2008

To Jim: There is nothing wrong with a union member earning more than the median household income, or even ten times the median household income, so long as the free market economy supports such pay. The problem is this: VIA THIS BAILOUT, WE THE AMERICAN TAX PAYERS ARE SUBSIDISING THE UAW MEMBERS AND PERPETUATING FAILED BUSINESS MODEL. Why is it so hard for some to understand the distain the average "employee-at-will" tax payer has for the UAW? My taxes go, my children's future gets leveraged, in order to keep the "job-bank" open. God help us.

jim

Dec 19, 2008

HJD: Because of the way the auto bailout has been presented, I can see why there would be disdain toward the blue collar worker of the UAW. I believe the right wing of the republican party is trying to skew the picture being presented. They have an agenda to break up unions. Did you happen to hear about the memo that was circulated about taking out the unions even before the House voted. The memo stated this was their chance to do exactly that. So they are spinning it to look like the union is the bad guy. My opinion.

Jim, UAW member Kokomo

Dec 20, 2008

This is all sour grapes, the cost of black lake is borne by union dues and has nothing to do with perks by union oficials or members.Get to the real issues of saving the auto industry.

LesThanZero

Dec 22, 2008

Chapter 11 is the answer. After years of kow-towing to the unions, the Big 3 need to call a strike in reverse. It's interesting how Toyota and Honda so quickly learned how to build better cars for less money by using the same domestic labor pool.

I live near here, this golf course has been for sale for a while, so get your facts straight...

Shannon

Dec 23, 2008

A couple of facts from someone who lives near this Training Center. First of all, the golf course has been for sale for some time. Not like they are trying to hold onto that part of the center. Second of all, it also is used by other unions, not just the UAW, Steelworkers, Electricians, and many others use this facility.

Dec 23, 2008

Shannon: This newspaper is anti-union and will manipulate the facts to make it seem like union people are the bad guys in this financial mess.

Shannon

Dec 23, 2008

Observant One - This is not so for the Training Center. You are not allowed to drive your car onto the grounds if you drive a foreign car, so they do take pride here. Also, when I lived down near the Ford Wixom plant in Wixom Michigan, you mostly saw Fords in their employee parking lot.

Karrie made the most observant comment:"This newspaper is anti-union and will manipulate the facts to make it seem like union people are the bad guys in this financial mess." The country is being manipulated and we are fighting amongst ourselves while Wall Street steals the money! Smoke & mirrors.

Dec 27, 2008

if the uaw sold black lake it would have no bearing on the botom line for the domestic auto companies.black lake is used as a training location for rank & file members for the uaw and other unions. they have classes on stewards training community services pensions and other benefits any uaw member can go if he or she is selected by their local union. as for auto workers being overpaid labor costs 10% of the cost of a vehicle the rest is value added (90%)!!! that is used to subsidize the rich wall st banks who evidently really run this country (700 billion with no significant squawk from congress

Trying to make a living

Dec 27, 2008

Black Lake has nothing to do with the Big 3 going bankrupt. If us Union workers want to support Black Lake with our dues that's nobody's business. It's mismanagement as usual that's bankrupting the Big 3. I work Chrysler. I was layed off for 2 months because of slow sales. The first week I returned I was forced to work overtime. Why??? 1 year ago I was working 4 hours over daily at time and a half so someone could go home making straight time pay. Why??? MISMANAGEMENT!!!! If they want to give the $$$ away I'm taking it.

Something to investigate: How are the employees of the UAW Golf Course paid? Have they been allowed to form a union of their own ? are they UAW ? Minimum Wage / non union ?

Mark

Jan 7, 2009

The Black Lake facility was bought and paid for through the dues of hard-working UAW members. Why should we sell it? The UAW isn't receiving a bailout or government loan guarantee. Contrary to inaccurate rumors, dues amount to only two hours of pay per month. Small price to pay for the right to earn $30 per hour! Workers have an absolute RIGHT to collective bargaining, fair pay, fair benefits and dignity! I'm PROUD to be a member of the UAW! Most people with anti-union attitudes are stuck in low-paying, deadend non-union jobs and they're simply jealous of organized workers.

Well bainless Union dolts - actually read the article - Your Golf Course LOST $23 Million DOllars over the last 5 years - Lets strain our brains and stay on point - Why should the US taxpayer subsidize your private course and then not receive the same rights to lay the course at the same price. You cannot have a "Private Course" that is "Publicly Funded".
