Stop bowing, stop apologizing

Examiner Editorial
November 18, 2009

President Obama's bow to Japan's Emperor Akihito was deeply insulting to the American people he was elected to represent. Sadly, it came as no surprise: For the past nine months, Obama has traveled around the world apologizing for America's alleged multitude of past sins and errors. These mea culpas have been delivered to nations ruled by corrupt authoritarians (Egypt), terrorist-supporting monarchs (Saudi Arabia) and virulently anti-Semitic despots (Iran), among so many others. He has even apologized to countries in Europe that might not exist in anything remotely like their current form were it not for the repeated shedding of American blood on their soil.

So seeing Obama obsequiously bowing and scraping to the head of state of the nation that launched the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor doesn't exactly come as a shock. But it is no less egregious for not being unexpected.

It simply ought not be necessary to instruct an American chief executive -- even one so inexperienced in foreign affairs as Obama was when he took the oath of office -- that we do not bow to foreign monarchs. We declared our independence from a monarch. As Thomas Paine put it, "in America, the law is king." And the law is made by representatives chosen by the true sovereign, the people. A bow is far more than a diplomatic expression of respect; it is a sign of submission and acceptance of the authority of the monarch. For an American president to make such a gesture rightfully has sparked outrage across the country.

Recognizing that Obama's bow was inappropriate, most of the Japanese news media used images of the president's more formal nod to the Empress. Japan has depended upon the U.S. nuclear umbrella for decades and has looked to this nation for strong, steady leadership in a dangerous world. As a result, the Japanese have been able to redirect precious resources that would otherwise have gone to its defense against threats from the Soviet Union, North Korea and China toward the pursuit of peace and economic stability. They understand -- apparently better than some of our own leaders here at home -- that a weakened America creates immense problems for them.

So stop the bowing and apologizing, Mr. President. We elected you to stand up for us, not to make apologies for us or to demean the accomplishments and sacrifices of our ancestors.

This is now the SECOND TIME our President has bowed to a foreign leader and the foreign leader did NOT bow back.

Sad.

The Japanese constitution, instituted in May 1947, after World War II, demoted the Emperor from a "living god" to a "symbol of the state” and a “unifier of the people.” The Emperor was stripped of his political and diplomatic power and was recast as a symbol of new democratic, postwar Japan. Although Hirohito renounced his divinity he was careful not to deny that he was a descendent of the Sun Goddess. Without that he would have no claim on the throne. Obama's deep bow was in keeping with Japanese tradition - CEOs of Japanese companies receive similar deep bows from their employees. There is no reason to make a big deal out of this. It is better than the case of the American athlete who was introduced to the King of England and said, "Nice to meetcha King."

I did not elect or vote for Obama to be President of this country. I along with 58,783,221 other Americans voted for McCain/Palin...so don't blame me...and don't accuse me of electing him as President. I knew better...as did over 58 million other Americans.

PALIN 2012!!!!

Thank God we have a President who is improving our relationship around the world. Lets see, Eisenhower bowed to President DeGalle, Nixon bowed to the Chinese several times, and President Bush held hands with the Saudi King and hugged him and gave an Impromptu back rub to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and could not find his way out of a meeting room. Can you say HYPOCRITE? Well what can you expect from the losing party?

Lets see Eisenhower did it,Nixon did it,oh I almost forgot Bush did it including holding hands as he walked around his ranch, I guess that don't count, the BS don't apply to Republicans only this Presidents whom the right wing nut cakes and religious zealots are trying to denagrade everything he does its really getting ridiculous, I guess the next thing if the President have bacon and eggs for breakfast some nut cake will say that he indoctornate and brain wash the hog and chicken.

Ratings for the U.S. in Japan, China and South Korea are more positive than they were in 2008, but the improvements in U.S. image in these three countries have been much less dramatic than in Indonesia, India, Nigeria and in the Western European and Latin American countries survey. The Republicans are the opposition party the party of no. This trial in NY is a prime example. If he decided to keep the trial on the military base they would say he is weak. What a bunch of whinnies.

I'll tell you what's insulting: an intellectually dishonest revisionist blowhard in a second-rate rag pretending to speak for all Americans. I, for one, am grateful that our current President has discarded "cowboy diplomacy" in favor of just plain "diplomacy."

But you keep on catering to the lowest common denominator of populist neocons who couldn't find Japan on a map (but can tell you where the nearest ten McDonald's are) if that's how you make your buck.

 Thank God there is intelligent life out there. I mean these idiots think Sarah Palin should run for President. They sit there and look a FAUX news all evening, listen to Jobba the Hutt Limbaugh in the mornings and FOX and friends and nothing else. I mean read this newspaper. All the opinions are the same. No mater what Obama does, they complain. Is a newspaper supposed to be completely bias like this? Can they have just one commentator unbiased? Its just a travesty.

Bowing in Japan -- whether to an emperor or a businessperson -- is a sign of respect. This ludicrous brouhaha over our President bowing is simply more right wing nonsense and I am insulted by it. And I am gratified to have a President who knows what to do when he travels abroad.

A simple head bow would have sufficed in Japan and with the Saudi King. Whatever... It's the constant apologizing and snubbing our allies while sniveling before our rivals that creates the complete picture of a man who harbors no pride in his heart for America. Our President should be a stalwart champion for our country not a bowing, sniveling waif. Me, I'm not impressed...

LET ME BE AS KIND AS POSSIBLE. ANYONE WHO THINKS THAT OBAMA'S APOLOGY TOUR HAS WON US ANY FRIENDS IS AN IDIOT. UNDER BUSH THEY HATED US AND REPECTED US. UNDER OBAMA THEY HATE US AND HAVE NO RESPECT FOR US. THE DEMOCRATS CAN MAKE BELIEVE HIS DENIGRATION OF AMERICA HELPS, BUT IT DOES NOT. AS SOMEONE WHO HAS TRAVELLED THE WORLD, THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES FOREIGNERS FEEL BETTER IS WHEN WE HAVE SOMETHING BAD HAPPEN TO US. OF COURSE EVEN AS THEY LAUGH AT US, THEY STILL THINK THAT WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO SUPPORT THEM BOTH ECONOMICALLY AND MILITARILY. I SAY IT IS TIME TO SAY GO TO HELL TO ALL OF THEM AND ACTUALLY START THINKING ABOUT OURSELVES FOR A CHANGE.

when one of our ambassadors years ago curtsied in Britain, there was a near riot. An American does not BOW to any head of state, even our own. while many citizens may not know this, no Government Official can afford to not understand that.

a polite head nod, would have been polite and appropriate in japan.. and that is what the Japanese press showed, because our President bowing to a monarch is embarrassing and wrong, and THEY apparently know it better than HE did.

Let's see, he hasn't made-up his mind as to how many troops to send to help-out with the troops already in Afghan soil. He has help unemployment go as high and for as long as no other president before. He has accomplished nothing new with the Chinese, North Koreans or Iranians. The Dollar is as low as ever compared to the world currency. He keeps having Summits, (Beer, etc.), naming Zsars, and keeping everything he doesn't want us to know behind closed door. Only consults with his political buddies, (Rham and Axlerod.) As far as I'm concern he can Rham an Axlerod through the Constitution and it won't change all the other atrocities he has commited. None of these are silly things.

I completely agree with Rick.
Why are Democrats so stupid that they can't understand that the most of the world hate a superpower because it makes them feel inferior. The US has been hated decades before GW Bush came along. And Rick is completely right. Those countries will hate the US but still want the protection, support and help from them. When are people going to wake up? Unfortunately I believe that not only have you elected the dumbest president ever but also the most dangerous. I fear for your country.

Wasted advice. Obama hates America and will never stop apologizing for what he considers the Great Satan's--that's America's to everybody but him, the Democrat Party leadership, leftists and liberals--past, present and future sins.

BTW: Notice that Obama has bowed to men. He didn't to the Queen of England, but Michelle broached protocol and etiquette and touched the Queen.

The Obamaos and their radical leftist/Marxist administration, with the aid of the state-controlled minion media, will not rest until they've brought America to its knees.

Thing is: They're too ignorant to understand there are millions and millions of us who refuse to and will not let that happen.

Nov 18, 2009

I agree with Maryscott O'Connor. He bowed to the emperor because THAT'S WHAT YOU DO IN JAPAN.It's respectful. It's crazy that people are upset about him actually knowing something about a different culture. It's how you greet people in Japan, like kissing cheeks in Latin America and shaking hands here. All this uproar shows is how idiotic some people are.

On a random note, I also see that he brought up Pearl Harbor... How about bringing up our surprise attack on them that killed over 100,000 people, not counting Nagasaki... I'm not saying that Pearl Harbor wasn't an awful event, it's just that the writer shouldn't make it seem like we didn't do anything.

Keep calling the people who disagree with you names and continue to blame every woe on his predecessor (and never any of the accomplishments). Continue to bask in the affection of Euro-trash and assorted despots, loons, misfits and tyrants.

You folks elected this effete community organizer and so-called "intellectual" so live with it...and the rest of us will suffer the consequences for your foolishness. Keep feeling good about yourself while the rest of the world, including our enemies, laugh their heads off.

Mr. Obama is a socialist and an appeaser who has never created anything, done anything or accomplished anything in his execrable life.

Live with the results of your foolishness liberals and stop whining...it, and you and Mr. Obama, have become tiresome.

umm, I live in Japan, and I can tell you that the main news network showed the full bow; I watched it.
If the Japanese prime minister came to America and refused to shake hands with the president, everyone's panties would be in a twist, because shaking hands is simply what you do when you meet someone there. But for Obama to bow to the Japanese emperor is scandalous... good grief. Get a life and focus this energy on something of actual import.

With his lack of experience overseas, Obama could not have gotten a job as even a middle level manager working overseas for a company. Heaven help us. We have a total amateur in the White House acting like he's a gardener for the Imperial household of Japan with that bow of his.

Nov 19, 2009

Ah, for the days when the President garnered respect just for his position. Ah, for the days when our President showed respect to a foreign leader and was lauded for it rather than demonized. If the right weren't fauxtraged over EVERY SINGLE THING Obama does maybe people would start taking your little hissy fits more seriously.

justaguy

Nov 19, 2009

umm, no. He's not acting like a gardener. he's acting like a human being. In Japan, people bow to each other. The more formal the situation, or the higher the rank of the person being greeted, the deeper the bow.
When one goes to a foreign country it is helpful to understand something of the customs of said country. Observing those customs helps to strengthen the relationship, and shows the other side that you are making an effort to understand them.
People bow in Japan. get over it.

Nov 19, 2009

For all of ya'll that say, "What's the big deal with Obama bowing? Afterall Bush did it", WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT BUSH. We're NOT talking about THE PAST. We're talking about the HERE and NOW. We're talking about what's going on NOW, what's current with the US situation NOW. So what if Bushed (or other presidents bowed)? Who cares about who bowed THEN. It's about the NOW and the NOW is Obama. So let's move on to what's going on NOW. And BTW, Obama's motto was "YES YOU CAN! CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN" if it's change we can believe in...where's the "change" if he's bowing down to these other leaders? Hum?

Aaron

Nov 19, 2009

How does the saying go? 'Walk softly and carry a big stick'? Did any of you ever think that perhaps the leader of the United States, the most politically, militarily, and economically powerful nation the world has ever seen doesn't really need to try and remind everyone of that fact at every turn? I'll put it to you like this: Obama could let the ayatollah use him as a foot rest and it wouldn't make reality any different, any country who thinks they can compete with us is welcome to step up and try.

In the meantime, wouldn't it be beneficial to The United States to have as many nations on good terms with us as possible? I mean, new markets to sell American goods in would be TERRIBLE for our economy after all, wouldn't it? Fools.

ggordon

Nov 19, 2009

Obama is the laughing stock of the foreign press. Our enemies are still enemies, and lick their chops at a lame, apologist. And our allies, even those he has so deeply offended in the last few months, are afraid of not just his weak kneed apologies (from a security standpoint) but his economic policies in the US, The world economy is driven by the American consumer - 25% of it. If Obama can carry through with his plans, taxes will have to go through the roof to pay for it. He will slit the throat, stomp on, and kick over the cliff - the golden goose for the world- the US economy. It;s Obama's economy now - so don't blame Bush.

Bo, go bow no more.

Nov 19, 2009

BO's bows are insulting to those who risked their lives to found our nation. He insults George Washington, who refused to be King, Jefferson, Franklin, all the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He insults those great creators of our nation and their struggle to establish the idea that ordinary people are the equal of any inherited aristocracy.

It's embarrassing to see the ignorant comments on this page that try to make it seem all right that our leader bows to Kings who do not bow in return. The delighted look on the Saudi King's face told it all -- the Japanese Emperor had the grace to look uncomfortable.

When will we start looking at the real issues and have honest discussions (pro & con) on what needs to be done for this wonderful country we live in? Stop the personal attacks and get on with the real problems we have.
