Stop lying about those stimulus jobs

Give the mainstream news media some credit: They have diligently dug into President Obama's fanciful boasts of job creation. When Obama claimed earlier this month that his $787 billion economic stimulus package had "saved or created" 640,000 jobs, a dozen news organizations pounced. They soon highlighted some of the most egregious cases of sketchy job creation in about 20 states.

From their reports, The Examiner has created an online interactive map for tracking exaggerated stimulus claims. So far, more than 75,000 jobs -- exceeding 10 percent of the total -- are either highly doubtful or clearly imaginary. In the coming weeks, we expect to add many thousands more to that total as other media organizations scrutinize stimulus grants in their areas.

Obama and his senior aides have sought to downplay the importance of exact numbers, but they invited close scrutiny earlier this year by setting dramatic expectations for the effect the stimulus program would have on employment. If his stimulus program was approved, Obama promised, unemployment would not go above 8 percent this year. The reality is that it passed 10.3 percent in October. So now the stimulus books are being cooked to mollify an anxious public worried that real-world jobs continue to disappear and angry that Obama has thrown almost $1 trillion down the stimulus rathole.

With his political advisers in a panic, Obama is now planning a State of the Union policy pivot intended to stave off a disastrous congressional election in 2010. After running up the nation's first-ever $1.4 trillion annual budget deficit for 2009, Obama will strike a new pose in January as the man who will stop government extravagance. Budget Director Peter Orszag says Obama will offer new suggestions for budget cuts and "revenue raisers," aka "tax hikes."

Obama's previous budget-cutting masquerade was laughable. In July, he called for a pathetic $265 million in cuts. But with a $3 trillion annual budget, Washington blows that much in about two blinks of an eye. Besides, most of the Obama "cuts" were proposed in full knowledge that Congress would never approve them. No doubt, Obama will present the same sort of faux budget cuts in 2010. But Obama's "concern" about excessive government spending likely will be no more credible to voters next November than the thousands of phantom stimulus jobs he claims to have created this year.

I would say loss of contact with reality is the base problem with the Obama government and most of the media - the American Medical Association while not endorsing political causes, cites that as a serious mental illness.

So...what we're saying is Obama spent 1.2 Million dollars per job "saved" Given the average job earns ~50K or so, that suggests he spent 24 times more money than the earning power of each of these jobs. Wow!!! That is a definite win in the Obama column. I would be embarrassed to even raise these numbers if I were in the Obama camp! Why not just pay these people 1.2 million for their jobs; they would be better off. Lovin our Obamanation...not.

Unfortunately the economy is in extremis. There can be no recovery. No power on earth can reverse the many mortal wounds inflicted on it by a mountain of debt, failed regulation, irresponsble deregulation such as dumping Glass-Steagall, trade deficts, job export, the collapse of our K-12 schools system, deterioration of the skills of our workforce, and last but not least a Congress deftly manipulated by 29.000 corporate lobbyists in Washington. Get ready for the big D Depression. At least, as Will Rogers said, we will participate in it in an automobile.

While I am no fan of this administration, I do not agree with publius that there can be no recovery. We as individuals have the power to create whatever system we deem fit. Fortunately people are waking up and realizing that total faith in the government will get you nothing but misery. Let us all take the reigns of our own lives, save our money, build up our families, educate our children and ourselves. Take charge of your own lives people. Choose elected officials that protect your liberties from the government, not strip them away. The Constitution was designed to protect the individual from the tyranny. Let us not forget that. We can get it all back we just have to believe in the power of individual liberty. This next 3 years will damage our system but it will not break what the founding fathers created. We can get it all back!

I think it's important to note that Obama's unprecdented level of "transparency" is required because he came up with an unprecedented new metric for measuring economic policy effectivess: "saved" jobs. No one else had every tried to quantify the unquantifiable and unprovable before. So there is somewhat of an onus on them to show _something_ here. Otherwise, he'd be stuck measuring himself agains the unemployment rate and overall employment figures (which really hasn't been his friend and are far worse than anyone imagined).

Hell, even if the numbers were true, that's over $1.2 million per "job". Where can *I* get a job like that?

I see most of the focus on fake jobs created in fake districts.

My question is. Where was that money actually spent? This may well be a false accounting of huge sums of taxpayer funds going into the hands of cronies that cannot be accounted for in an otherwise legal way.
Could we please follow the money on this one?

@scclockdr: read the spreadsheet under the pretty map picture. Most of the money went to raises or to projects for existing employees.

There can be no recovery without a reversal as radical as the New Deal.

Entire swathes of regulation, taxation and bureaucracy must be eliminated or businesses large and small will continue in their present mode of simply refusing to take any risk whatsoever without knowing what is coming down the pike next from power-mad liberal zealots who couldn't run a lemonade stand.

The puchase of the Illinois Prison to house TERRORISTS will not be a good move for the economy, BECAUSE there are already service men or women guarding these TERRORISTS therefore any move onto mainland USA would cause TAXPAYER funded jobs which is a tax BURDEN not a tax BENEFIT ! SORRY! GO-FISH man child!

" With his political advisers in a panic, Obama is now planning a State of the Union policy pivot intended to stave off a disastrous congressional election..."

Isn't it kind of strange that they are announcing what the State of the Union speech will be about- this far in advance? Panic indeed. Flop sweat.

Hey Barry, how about you focus on actually governing NOW instead of next year's speeches.

In the fall of 2008, Vestas, the wind energy plant in Brighton, Colorado was in all the papers as a big job creator. Governor Ritter and Ken Salazar each made visits touting Obama's Stimulus plan for new green jobs. Then on October 30, 2009, less than a year later it was reported by the Greeley Tribune that the Denmark-based wind turbine company Vestas plans to slow its efforts in the United States until markets rebound to more robust levels, and that will affect local hiring.

The only way I see to stop Washington's insanity is for us as citizens to demand our State Legislatures stand up for us, nullify the illegal, unconstitutional legislation coming from Washington and just say NO. If that doesn't work we could be looking at Thomas Jefferson's recommended cure for a tyrannical government.
