Voters reject Obama's double talk

Examiner Editorial
November 5, 2009

For the first time in eight years, Virginia has a Republican governor.

Election Day 2009 was a very good time to be a moderately conservative Republican promising to restrain government spending and to get needed things done without making bigger government the solution of first choice. It was not a good day to be a Democrat linked with Washington's biggest problem -- politicians who promise one thing, but then do something else entirely.

After less than a year in office, President Obama is well on his way to becoming emblematic of Washington double talk. On the 2008 campaign trail, he promised a "net federal spending cut" and "a tax cut for 95 percent of America's working families." But once inaugurated in 2009, Obama joined the Democratic majority in Congress in detonating a thermonuclear explosion of federal borrowing, spending, taxing, subsidizing, regulating, wasting and guaranteeing. He remains personally popular, but public support for his policies, most notably health care reform, is near or below 50 percent and steadily trending downward.

Tuesday's election results should make clear to Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress that they seriously misinterpreted what voters were saying in 2006 and 2008. In 2006, angry voters turned out a Republican majority that for more than a decade had promised one thing but delivered something else. Then in 2008, voters took Obama at his word that he was a centrist and they closed the book on racism in American history by making him the nation's first black president.

Nowhere in 2008's returns was there a voter mandate for pork-barrel spending of unprecedented magnitude, abrupt nationalization of the banking and auto industries, or turning doctors and nurses into government employees and patients into wards of the state. The question now is whether Obama and the Democrats will recognize just how far they've overreached and step back from their extreme agenda.

Republicans could just as easily misinterpret the 2009 election results. The leading shifts within the electorate that produced Bob McDonnell's win in Virginia and Chris Christie's victory in New Jersey were among independents and voters who worry most about the economy. The dramatic shift of independents to the GOP reiterates that America remains a centrist nation with a distinct tilt to the right. Similarly, voters most worried about the economy decisively backed McDonnell and Christie, who both promised lower taxes, less spending, and more encouragement of economic freedom and growth.

But Republicans will go far amiss if they conclude simply saying no to Obama and the Democrats is their ticket back to power. Voters want leaders they can trust because they do what they promise. Everything else is secondary.

It merely was a much need "win" for the Republican Party but it changes nothing. Nonetheless, exit polls conducted by Edison Research on Tuesday showed that support for Mr. Obama had diminished only slightly in the state since his victory here in 2008. , Democrats won the governor's mansions in Virginia and New Jersey only seven weeks after 9/11. But the biggest loser is the TEA PARTY. Newt warned you. Republicans should be worried about their own divisions. "All the energy in their party is in the extreme right, While national Republican leaders endorsed Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, the district went Democratic for the first time in 150 years.

Oh yeah, greg. The wins in NJ and VA mean NOTHING. They were just flukes. We should all focus on NY 23 because THAT was a trouncing... oh... wait.. you mean your guy only won by a tiny margin? Over a guy who was literally unknown three weeks ago? Yeah. You're right. You guys ain't got nothin' to worry about... snicker.

The Dems can't ignore it because they're ideologues. The secular equivalent of religious fundamentalists. The Dems think they're on a moral crusade and will not (cannot) back off an inch. Check out the blogs; the Leftists all think the solution to the election losses is for Dem candidates to move FURTHER to the Left. Unbelievable!

It isn't just double talk that voters are upset about, it is more about being ignored. The American people did say no with their vote in 2008, no to excessive government. They have been ignored. They said no to cap and trade. They were ignored. They are saying no to a government takeover of healthcare. So far, they are being ignored. They made themselves clear last Tuesday at the polls. And the reaction from the government ... they still can't seem to hear us.

Whenever the Dems win a national election, you can count on them to convince themselves that Americans have suddenly seen the light and embraced every last detail of the leftist agenda. They did it with Carter and Clinton, and they're doing the same with Obama, who gives them the added ammunition that they can accuse of racism anyone who dares stray from the plantation. Even with huge majorities in the Congress, they have failed to socialize health care or subjugate American industry to the whims of the tree huggers and Chicken Littles. The Dems are going to take a hit in 2010, and their cry will become "No, we didn't!"

The Liberal Democrats will spin this in some manner to put the blame on Bush as usual. They are too focused on their own agenda and self interest to see that America is not liking what they've so far done to put us in the path of economic disaster for the future generations who will be saddled with the burden. Hopefully this is the beginning of Americans waking up to how dangerous these Liberals in Charge are, and put a stop to it when elections are held.

As a moderate conservative: the way the country is governed now, I would not loose one nights sleep if the next terrorist attack was on washington dc with both houses in session and the chicago organizer there too.

Rejecting ObamaCare is a rejection of socialism and Marxism. Barack Obama has numerous socialists and Marxists hanging from the ceiling in the White House for a reason??

Your editorial is wrong about health care reform "turning doctors and nurses into government employees and patients into wards of the state". This has not happened under our 40-year-old Medicare system and won't happen under health insurance reform unless private insurance companies are out of their minds. We desperately need health insurance reform because our present "system" allows 45,000 people to die each year because they can't get insurance and because inadequate insurance is the cause of ever so many bankruptcies. Why is the editor so afraid of choice and competition?

Your editorial is wrong about health insurance reform "turning doctors and nurses into government employees". This is not happening under our successful 40-year-old Medicare system, and won't happen under health insurance reform unless insurance companies mess up. We desperately need health care reform as 45,000 people die annually because they can't get insurance, and a great many bankruptcies are the result of inadequate insurance.

The current Democrat leaders are all arrogant, self-righteous, extremist, totalitarian ideologues. They did not care what the voters wanted before Obama was elected, they did not care what the voters wanted after he was elected, and do not care what the voters want today. The leaders have always ignored the polls and the Townhalls. They aintend to force their vision onto hundreds of millions of American citizens, or die (politically) trying. Just like most of the mainstream media, may they RIP.

It is the rank and file Democrat representatives who are far less totalitarian and extreme, and it is they who have listened, and are listening to the voters.

NJ and VA might have been about "local issues", but it shows that Obama's personal popularity could not overcome party or candidate unpopularity. In 2008, he was on the ballot as a historic candidate and the Dems benefitted greatly. In 2009, as it will be in 2010, his coattails are not long enough. That is why these results *are* a big problem for the Dems. End of story.

Independence through Independents

Nov 5, 2009

Let me reaffirm the crux of your article. This past Tuesday happened because of the large swing by all of us "center right independents." The Democrats ignore this at their own peril. But neither should Republicans interpret this as an overt endorsement. We lack trust in both parties, but are naturally more suspicious of the party in power. Make no mistake - we punished Republicans in 2006 & 08 because of fiscal irresponsibility. Now the Democrats are even more fiscally irresponsible, with longer term problems due to the increase in size of government (which never shrinks). We are even more angry now, so do not be suprised when that is reflected in the 2010 elections. But Repubs, if you get back in power, we will be just as angry if you don't put our fiscal house in order.

Once again we see the democrats lie about their 'victory' on Tuesday night. No one believes them. It's sad that our children have, in our society, mentors that just lie. What a poor example of our govt.

Finally, someone just wrote a great book about Americans, in a small town, that finally stand up to federal tyranny & ends up starting the 2nd American Revolution. It's no longer a far fetched idea with the way our country is crumbling. I encourage everyone to just read it & see what's in store for us over the nxt 3 yrs. Just read it....I got a few for friends, it's that good.

Why does the Exaniber abd its conservative editorial writers continue to be apologists for the abuses of the insurance companies? No Republican has offered any alternative bill that addresses these abuses. Why are you afraid of competition?

Hmmmm. Seems like the Republicans put their proposal before the electorate yesterday. But, I'm just an ole phart and may have gotten it wrong. Further, when did we ever see competition develop when one faction holds all the cards? Ain't gonna happen!

Java Master......what abuses are you talking about? Health insurance companies are only generating a 2.1% return on revenue. You liberals should do a little research on your own in lieu of blindly following democrats and their mission to socialize medicine in America. This health care bill will reward the irresponsible while it penalizes the responsible citizens of this country. Your watching democrats trying to change America from the USA to the USSA.

Might want to chekc out how it will affect Seniors and the "baby Boomers', who have, or about to retire. They will begin to "amend" a soon as it gets passed, then stamp "worth saving" or not on your forehead, once they have total control of our lives, thus removing our, and our Drs' ability to sustain life. The euthansia door will open. Seniors will no longer be collecting SS and Medicare, because they will cease to exist...freeing up the economy to look better for his Administration. The fines and jailtimes look like a stroke at Communism to me.
