Voters won't forget Saturday night

Examiner Editorial
November 23, 2009

Last week had to be a bit awkward for Democrats. They labored to pass a health care bill that, among other things, establishes a government advisory panel to curb health care costs with industrywide medical recommendations. And at just the wrong moment, a similar government advisory panel provoked outrage by recommending that women stop getting so many breast cancer screenings.

Unruffled, the Democrats pressed on with their 2,000-page health care bill, going so far as to hold a rare Saturday night vote on whether to proceed to debate. There's a good reason they are in such a rush to pass the legislation. It isn't because the bill will cut health care costs -- it will actually increase them, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. It isn't because the bill will improve the quality of care, or because it will quickly benefit the uninsured. Most provisions of the bill don't even kick in until 2014. (Its tax increases start immediately.)

Democrats are in such a hurry because 2010 is an election year. That's no time to pass legislation that a large and highly motivated segment of voters opposes strongly. The Democrats hope that if they act now, public anger might wane before midterm elections next November.

This is why Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid bought the votes of wavering moderates in his party with promises of extra-large servings of pork for their states. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., proudly proclaimed that her "yes" vote on Saturday night had cost $300 million. (Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana and a wide swath of the American Midwest for a mere fraction of that in 1803.)

The real issue in this debate is not whether the bill includes certain provisions, like a government-run "public option," or fines and jail time for people who do not purchase insurance. Those are just two bad ideas among hundreds that Democrats want to impose.

The real problem is that no one expects the Senate debate to produce anything that increases the freedom of consumers to choose the health care they want or that encourages competition and lower insurance premiums. No matter how the debate goes, the result will be bigger, more expensive, more intrusive government.

The voters, about to be burdened by yet another trillion-dollar initiative from President Obama, at least have the recourse of the ballot box. They would do well to remember the names of those who voted yes and make sure that those senators join the ranks of the unemployed next year.

I don't think most of the analysts understand the political dynamics of the health bill. Just as politicians in the farm state can't get elected if they don't support increased Farm supports. Similarly, if the dems can get health care through, it won't be reversible and no politician will get elected by opposing it that's a dead letter. The only thing will be to get the most $$ for their state like Mary Landrieu. It's a sure sweep for Dems.

the disgust for Dem politicians and those that get them elected may be more powerful than you think. I wouldn't make any bets yet regarding obamacare. It is an up hell battle given the massive disinformation campaign that is being wage by the compliant media and the greed of those that now have their neighbors not only paying their mortgages but also picking up the tab for their medical bills. The over the top sanctimony from the left will be it's undoing.

Thank goodness that the Dems have started the ball rolling. The earlier the health care reform is finalized, the better it is for this nation. With the winter months getting closer for this nation and snow would be hitting so many states, think of the accidents that could happen to people without health insurance! These people would be heading for emergency treatments at medical facilities. Who do you think would ultimately have to bear the costs? Us, of course!

Those Congress people, who blast at the Public Option, must either be jokers or believe that all Americans are idiots! Isn't it hilarious that none of them are complaining about their own government-run health care plan, which by the way,is the best in this nation! Now, how many plastic surgeries has McCain undergone with the costs absorbed by the government?

Anyone who views this as Health Care reform reveals themselves as a fool. There is NO reform here, only the Government take over of our lives and the trampling of the Constitution. God will forgive you, but I won't.

Uh, if Obamacare passes, who will bear the cost of treatment for the poor accident victims? Will that not be us as well? Perhaps we should put on our thinking caps, dearie.

If all citizens and non citizens are not to be forced to buy medical insurance then we must be willing to decree that anyone not insured will not be treated. Accident victims, people using the emergency room as their family physician - all must be given the heave ho. Take them to a welfare ward where they receive only water and die off - hopefully sooner rather than later. Frankly this would greatly improve the intellectual quality of our national gene pool.

I won't be voting for anyone with a "D" after their name for a long time after this. I believe this unconstitutional bill will kill our republic and leave my kids to be thralls of a massive national government unforeseen by our founding fathers.

There are many people who, unfortunately just don't seem to realize that WE are the ones who pay for what they seem to regard as free. The democrats have hurt this country badly but I think they will get their come-uppance at the polls.

Another liberal who is cluless on whats in the bill. The tax increases kick in immediately, but the "healthcare doesn't start till 2012. How does that help people this Winter?

Give credit where it is due. Most of the

whore of a politican served her state, much better than any before her.

When she retire her and Hapless Harry will

This is what you get for thinking that

OK, now that the Senate has brought a health care reform bill to the floor, it can work on cleaning up its flaws. That's why it was important to get a bill to the floor despite Republican obstructionism and the frantic squealing of the insurance lobby out of fear that it will be shoved off its gravy train.

The GOP Congress has indeed become the best Congress money can buy!

Saturday night's Senate Vote Just to have a debate on Healthcare, was a small victory for the "agents of change" (democrats) and reflects very poorly on the state of the Party of No & Fear that they would not even allow a debate on this issue to move forward -- thereby belying the title of being the greatest deliberative body on earth!

It is noteworthy, that in the past, the Party of No & Fear, also fought against Social Security Reform and Medicare, and true to form or color, they are fighting against healthcare reform today! Yes, Social Security and Medicare are subject to abuse and fraud, but that is one of the reforms in the healthcare bill to address this problem! Millions depend on Social Security and Medicare and they are glad that it is there. They want it improved upon not done away with.

The sad thing is..Mary Landrieu is not up for re election until 2014...the people of Louisiana will remember how she sold us out!

Fatso Landrieu is just an expensive call girl. Her price is $300K for a one vote stand. I wonder if she is good on her knees.

The further we move from risk being the driving force for insurance, the more fouled the system. In other words, trying to make everyone "even", or making it "fair" is what has screwed up the system. What is wrong with companies charging based on risk? You smoke, you pay more. You're obese, you pay more. It's all about risk. If not - totally scrap the system and go to a pay as you go. Watch prices fall.
And why is the government (taxpayers) assuming the risk for everything that used to be assumed by private businesses? Banks, autos, health, student loans... unlimited liability, and with it unlimited costs.
This is a total fiasco - and the future costs cannot be measured, but it will be many times any estimate. Anyone who does not understand this - and the only control being severe rationing - is not just a fool, but is just plain dumb.

If the liberals REALLY wanted to insure everyone, they would simply put everyone into their system, charging us exactly what they pay. That is the only "fair and equal" health care reform that is acceptable to me. Otherwise, LEAVE ME ALONE!

In response to Angellight:
If you would read your history, it was the democrats (agents of change) who took Social Security from being an independant trust and put the money into the General Fund and then tax you again on your money that you paid into the system when you take it out.
You really should spend more time reading and studying then just listening to the MSM and their 30 second snippets. It will make your comments more intelligent.

I think because of this being railroaded down our throats everyone should vote all out who voted for this stupid bill. Nancy and Harry need to go immediately. What has happened to our country? I think there will be a sort of a revolution coming. I was a democrat. Wish I could get ALL my votes back. What a fool I was. NO MORE

I don't understand where the uproar is on health care from the anti-Patriot Act crowd. Don't they see the coming total intrusiveness on the horizon as medical and personal data become intertwined with the IRS, employer data, and likely party affiliation. Where's the uproar? Or is it that Patriot=Bush=bad, Health=Dem/Obama=good? Can it be that simple and idealogical? God, I hope not.
