Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill stuffed full of unpleasant surprises

Examiner Editorial

May 22, 2009

Congress is considering the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade legislation and guess what? It’s  stuffed full of unpleasant surprises for the unwary. But thank goodness for the eagle-eyed folks at the American Energy Alliance, who spotted this little gem on page 781 of the mammoth 946-page bill:

“Title IV, Subtitle B, Part 2, Section 426, of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 states: ‘An eligible worker (specifically, workers who lose their jobs as a result of this measure) may receive a climate change adjustment allowance under this subsection for a period of not longer than 156 weeks…80 percent of the monthly premium of any health insurance coverage…up to a maximum payment of $1,500 in relocation allowance…and job search expenses not exceed[ing] $1,500.’”

If cap-and-trade is an energy and global warming bill, why is a three-year package of unemployment benefits, job training and relocation expenses buried deep within its fine print? And why is a federally subsidized “job bank” needed if laid-off workers would quickly be rehired for higher-paying “green” jobs? The fact that generous unemployment benefits are buried in the bill means that “green jobs are bunk,” the conservative Heritage Foundation’s Ben Lieberman told The Examiner.

A Heritage analysis also found that Waxman-Markey is the largest, most intrusive energy tax increase in American history. It would reduce the nation’s GDP by $7.4 trillion, raise electricity rates 90 percent and gasoline prices 74 percent. Apparently, the authors of this legislation were unaware that a recent poll found six out of 10 Americans oppose energy policies that raise their electricity bill by even one cent, much less practically double it. And the final kicker is that the bill’s effect on greenhouse gases emissions would be just barely measurable.

It stands to reason that forcing companies and individuals to switch from using relatively cheap, abundant energy sources like oil, coal and natural gas to more expensive “alternative” sources will be a huge drag on the nation’s economy, especially during a deep recession. There’s no getting around it: Higher energy costs will inevitably lead to higher consumer prices and fewer jobs. And any new “green” jobs created will likely be lower-paid manual labor and service jobs, not higher-paid manufacturing positions. Any way you look at it, throwing millions of Americans out of work is an unacceptably high price to pay for a paltry two-tenths of a degree difference in temperature by the end of the century.

Rearranging the chairs on the Titanic. And by the way, why force this measure now. Little tiny electric cars that are coming as a result of the auto bailouts and new mileage standards should curb emissions significantly, right?

Bush was set up to look bad, then the Dems have a runway opened to the Whitehouse, now they will destroy America. And it will be too late before the majority of the sheeple realize what happened.

This bill must fail, we are going into a new ice age (haven't you heard sunspots are down) and will need all the global warming we can get. Fire up the coal plants BO, and not the clean ones.

Supposing this goes through..
In this current economic situation, I do not see my job status changing dramaticly. Essentially, fixed income. That menas I am in no position to buy a new Green-O-mobile, I will continue to rely on liquified dinosaurs for transportation. TAX INCREASE.
House uses electricity and natural gas TAX INCREASE.
Drawing salary Mil Retirement $. (already had to adjust W-4 so as not to exceed $400 MAX tax credit income) TAX INCREASE.
There are no tax breaks in this administration for me. I guess they ASS U ME that I make more than $12,000/yr and am the evil rich to tax more.

The Bill will create high value jobs in the new, clean technology areas, and the good thing is that jobs can't be outsourced overseas. It will also get the US off its dependence on foreign oil and gas. The alternative is to try to hang on to the old ways while the rest of the world moves on.

High value green jobs? Not likely. Certainly not the jobs manufacturing turbines and solar equipment. Vestas already closed their European plants and moved them to Asia where costs are lower. The only jobs will be lower paid construction and maintenance jobs and the clerks at the unemployment offices as more US companies are forced offshore because of higher energy costs rippling through the entire US supply chain. Even billing and customer support can move to places like India. The green jobs lie was manufactured to convince enough dupes to support the bill while it is rammed through congress.

The people behind this cap and trade scheme are either living in some ivory tower up in the clouds, or else their hidden agenda is to completely wreck the American economy, bankrupt the federal government, and force all Americans into complete and total dependence on a socialist government dominated in perpetuity by the Democrat Party. What other explanation can there possibly be for our rulers hiking up the expenses of every business, every industry, and every private citizen during a time of economic malaise?

And the electric power is made how? It's predominantly made in coal fired power plants which Obamnable has sworn to eradicate. I guess you could plug into a windmill. Contact your Congress creatures and tell them to get off their tuffets and go to work to stop this insanity.

I'll tell you why legislation like this is important:
1 - it will never be passed
2 - it shows the Dems true hatred of the American way
3 - it leads to Dems being tossed out on their ears in upcoming elections.

As always, the Dems push their insane agenda too fast - and their own defeat.

PS - the Republicans are no better. That's the REAL issue with our country these days.

This bill is a literal death sentence for middle class non government employee taxpayers. It is no different in its results than Stalin or Mao's war on the hated middle class family--a big obstacle to total government control. Any you people put your faith in Republicans!!! This is the pay off.

the only real way to "reduce global warming" and rid us of the evil co2 (as jim says it's not pollution) is to kill all the people. If none of us are exhaling the problem is solved. lol

This is some scary crap right here!! How much more do these people think that we can really take? If this passes my electric bill will be the same amount as my car payment and insurance combined! What is the likelyhood that this will pass??

Ranger, Why do you think the only segment of the job market that is growing is the public sector. It's called job protection for the political class. Wake up America.

There are 50 million people in the US w/o basic healthcare...boo hoo to you all and your little tax concerns...you will all still eat well, drive your cars, take your holidays, and yes maintain health for you an your families...and if you don't maintain your health as a "result of the democrats"...well then you will know how 50 million AMERICAN people already feel. Greed has lead to this, suck it up and show AMERICAN pride for YOUR country and YOUR people. A degree of Socialism is necessary (sooner or later) for your Capitalist system to maintain itself. I mean what happens when 100 million are w/o basic health care...and then 150 million??

Eventually, there won't be a service-based country left for you to order your hamburgers from...

Be thankful your internet and computer is still running...you are SO far ahead of way too many AMERICANS.

Sacrifice - just a little.

I know of quite a few of those uninsured Americans that COULD get insurance but would rather spend their money on more pleasureable things then insurance!!!! So why should I pay for theirs and mine too.

"Lucy...you got some 'splanin' to do...."
How is it that global temperatures have been decreasing over the last 5 or more years when we have been warned that CO2 emissions are higher than ever?
How can a molecule that we exhale and plants inhale, and that is only 0.037% of our atmosphere be such a powerful gas as to cause GLOBAL warming?
Why do historical global average temperatures go up AND down from time to time with increased levels of CO2?
Would not a (worse case projected) 0.7 C global temperature increase (in 50 years) be GOOD for agriculture and humanity anyway?
Why in the hell does anyone with the ability to think trust the opinions of those with political and/or idealogical motivations? Especially when the so called "fix" for this supposed "crisis" is basically just a tax and further limits on liberty?
