Who Defines 'Fair and Balanced,' Sen. Schumer?

Examiner Editorial

Question for Chuck Schumer: Who appointed you  - or anybody else in government for that matter to decide what qualifies as "fair and balanced" political news and commentary on radio and television? The question arose earlier this week when the Democratic senator from New York was asked during an interview on Fox News whether he supports restoration of the Federal Communications Commission's Fairness Doctrine: "I think we should all be fair and balanced, don't you?" That's an especially rich retort coming from one of the most zealously hyper-partisan members of the Democratic caucus in the U.S. Senate.

The truth is that Democrats like Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, have been talking up bringing back the Fairness Doctrine because they hope to use it to stifle conservative dissent, particularly that which is heard daily from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Examiner columnist Michael Reagan on Talk Radio. The Fairness Doctrine empowered the FCC the regulate political content on broadcast airwaves, including radio and television. Instead of protecting the public interest in hearing a diversity of political commentary and perspectives, however, the Fairness Doctrine was used by JFK and LBJ to shut religious and conservative commentators out of radio. The Nixon administration later tried to use the FCC to browbeat the television networks to be less critical of Viet Nam policy. Former CBS News president details these abuses in his landmark book, "The Good Guys, the Bad Guys and the First Amendment." President Reagan repealed the Fairness Doctrine in 1987.

With Pelosi assured of continued dominance of the House of Representatives and Majority Leader Harry Reid an expanded Democratic majority in the Senate, one of the first orders of business will surely be to encourage the new administration to restore the Fairness Doctrine in some form or to somehow mandate it legislatively. Talk Radio and the Right side of the Blogosphere will protest long and loud, but don't expect CBS, NBC or ABC to come to their defense, as the giant broadcast networks are quite comfortable with the FCC so long as Democrats are in charge. The most interesting question will be how liberal bloggers will react. If they truly believe in the First Amendment, they will put partisan considerations aside and join the fight to keep the Fairness Doctrine where it belongs, in the regulatory graveyard.

Schumer is a very dangerous man. just the fact this conversation is taking place, makes you wonder about Obama and the democrats in power. All republicans statewide, local and federal level , better come together and unite on this issue now. We have no time for this facism from those who use the words" racism and hate crimes" so loosely.

The rationale provided by supporters of the Fairness Doctrine is that the airwaves belong to the people, not the station owners. In which case, the PEOPLE should determine what is broadcast over those airwaves, not some power-mad politician who is afraid he (or she) might lose their position if opposing information was broadcast over those airwaves. Note that none of them state whether the opposing information is true or not. Truth is not their issue, control is. Let's hope that in 4 years, there is enough of a democracy left that we can give these bums the boot, and get some new blood into the system, people who actually believe in democracy, not socialists and communists like those we are getting ready to install now.

Legal ccensorship of free speech will be acceptable to the modern politicized Supreme Court, as was the unconstitutional Kelo decision(confiscation of property for profits) The faiolure to impeach past Supremes for open vilation of the constitutiona dn making law from the bench (emminations and penumbras indeed)that have destroyed this nation's unity as much as the great civil war. certainly more lives have been lost by legal edict than by gunfire. The noble experiment has failed when the media belongs to one unconstitutional ideology and the taking of property for redistribution purposes (admittedly not for running the country) Political correctness and throwing God out of the public arena have destroyed the family and replaced it with an immoral government with absolute power. Speech goes first - guns next and all the freedoms will dissapear like dreams in the night. Good luck world!

I might add that scapegoating of any who disagree with the "One" as rascist will be the weapon of choice. MCCarthy will wish he had the weapons they have already used to gain power.

The donkeys are likely to be hoist on their own petard with a smarmy demand that radio, dominated by the right, be fair and balanced politically while TV is so dominated by the left. Seems to me they are leading with their chin. Should Schumer make war on talk radio, wouldn't it be fun to apply his own hypocritical standards to TV and make the lefties howl by turning their argument against them?
