Google's compromise: Sesame Street or the Berlin Wall?

Google has always been surprisingly random in the historical events it chooses to highlight by changing the logo on the front page. All last week they chose to highlight Sesame Street by promoting different characters from the show to celebrate the T.V. show's 40th Anniversary.

If you follow these things, you'll know that Google celebrated the birthday of H.G. Wells, the USB code, Comic Con, and crop circles in the same way.

On today's anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, however, Americans get another Sesame Street theme featuring the "Count."

Rest assured though, they give a "hat tip" to the historical day by linking to an excellent photo archive of the Berlin Wall from Life magazine.

The slideshow is very good; props to Google for assembling it for their users.

In Germany, Google users get the very own Berlin Wall commemorative logo:

Who was the idiot to make that decision? Not that Sesame Street is not important but it was already recognized. I would like to think that Jim Henson is turning over in his grave realizing that some Americans still thing that PERHAPS the birth of a highly influential children's program trumps the importance of what today, 20 years ago, represented.

I am anxious to see what google posts tomorrow. You would think and hope that some tribute to our nations Veterans might be appropriate, but google has consistently shown little regard for things that truly matter. Lets not forget that they already failed to acknowledge Sept. 11th.

In the UK we had Sesame Street run for seven days too, bafflingly. Sufficed to say, it's popularity in the UK isn't huge. To miss recognition of one of the biggest landmarks in recent European history over this is absurd.

I so agree, I think Google dropped the ball in not honoring the fall of the Berlin Wall last week, instead opting to honor Sesame Street for what was it four days? Shame on you. Your priorities are scewed.

I agree, Google dropped the ball in not honoring the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall instead opting to honor Sesame for four days! You priorities are most definitely scewed.
