Polish Academy of Sciences Questions Gore's Man-Made Global Warming Theory

Just as Al Gore prepares to testify on the dangers of Global Warming and urgency of new legislation the Polish Academy of Sciences has published a document that expresses skepticism over the concept of man-made global warming. Gore’s testimony today caps four days of hearings before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on climate change legislation.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the committee chairman, and Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, have introduced a draft version of the “American Clean Energy and Security Act,” which calls for imposing a cap and trade scheme.
This report from a major scientific institution in the European Union shows the “consensus” position is becoming increasingly untenable.
The report is as follows:
The climate change of our planet, which can be observed more frequently in recent years, has become alarming for the public opinion. Various methods to remedy the situation are elaborated on the international level by decision makers, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (operating since 1988) and different ecologic organisations.
Having a part in this significant debate, the Geologic Science Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences wishes to turn to 10 fundamental aspects of the problem closely related to the functioning of geosystem - the complex interdependence of processes occurring in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. The knowledge of these factors should be the foundation for any rational and careful decisions, which could interfere in the geosystem.

1. The climate of the Earth depends on the interaction between the surface and the atmosphere, both of which are heated by solar radiation characterized by a cyclical, variable intensity. The climate is influenced by the Earth's yearly revolution around the Sun, thermics, changes in ocean waters flow, air mass movement, mountain massif position, their uplift and erosion in time perspective as well as changes in the continents' position as a result of their permanent wandering.

2. Geologic research proves irrefutably that the permanent change is the fundamental characteristic of the Earth's climate as throughout its entire history, and the changes occur in cycles of varied length - from several thousand to just a few years. Longer climate cycles are provoked by the extraterrestrial factors of astronomic character as well as by the changes of the Earth's orbital parameters, in brief - by regional and local factors. Not all reasons for climate change or their phenomena are fully known yet.

3. Although in the history of the Earth, a considerably warmer climate than today had dominated, there had been repeated occurrences when the Earth experienced massive global cooling which always resulted in vast ice sheets that sometimes even reached the subtropics. Therefore, reliable forecasts of changes in the Earth's climate (not to mentioned efforts to prevent, shape, or act against them) must take into account the results of its research of the Earth's geological history - a time when humanity (and the industry) were not on our planet.

4. Since twelve thousand years ago, the Earth is in the another phase of cyclical warming and is near the maximum of its intensively. Just in the last 2.5 million years, periods of warming have on several occasions intertwined with ice ages, which have already been well identified.

5. The current warming is accompanied by an increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere: water vapour is dominant among them, and in smaller quantities there are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and ozone. This has always happened because it is an occurrence that accompanies cyclical warming and cooling. The periodic increase in the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, sometimes a value even several times larger than at present, has accompanied previous warming even before man inhabited the Earth.

6. Over the past 400 thousand years - even without human intervention - the level of CO2 in the air, based on the Antarctic ice cores, has already been similar 4 times, and even higher than the current value. At the end of the last ice age, within a time of a few hundred years, the average annual temperature changed over the globe several times, in total, it has gone up by almost 10 °C in the northern hemisphere, therefore the changes mentioned above were incomparably more dramatic than the changes reported today.

7. After a warm period in the past millennium, by the end of the thirteenth century, a cold period had begun and it lasted up to the mid-nineteenth century, and then a warm period in which we are living had begun. The phenomenon observed today, in particular the temporary rise of global temperature, are the result of the natural rhythm of climate change. Warmer and warmer oceans have a smaller ability to absorb carbon dioxide, and reducing the area of the long term permafrost leads to more rapid decomposition of organic compounds in the soil, and thus to increased emissions of greenhouse gases. For billions of years, Earth's volcanic activity along the lines of lithosphere plate boundaries, hidden mainly beneath the surface of the oceans, has been constantly providing the atmosphere with CO2 with various levels of intensively.

In the geo-system gas is removed from the atmosphere to the biosphere and from the lithosphere through the process of photosynthesis that is bound in the living organisms - including the shell carbonate marine organisms and after their death it is stored in the huge limestone on the bottom of the seas and the oceans, while on land it is bound in various organic sediments.

8. A detailed monitoring of climate parameters has been carried out for slightly over 200 years; it only regards parts of continents, which constitute only 28% of the world. Some of the older measuring stations established - as a result of progressive urbanization, in the peripheries of the cities, are now within them. This factor, among other things, is the reason for the rise of the measured values of temperature. The research of the vast areas of the oceans has only been launched 40 years ago. Measurements taken for this kind of short periods of time can not be considered as a firm basis for creating fully reliable models of thermal changes on the surface of the Earth, and their accuracy is difficult to verify. That is why far-reaching restraint needs to be kept regarding blaming, or even giving the biggest credit to man for the increased level of emissions of greenhouse gases, for such a theory has not been proven.

9. There is no doubt that a certain part of the rise of the level of greenhouse gases, specifically CO2, is associated with human activity therefore, steps should be taken to reduce the amount on the basis of the principles of sustainable development, a cease of extensive deforestation, particularly in tropical regions. It is equally important to take up and pursuit appropriate adapting actions that will mitigate the effects of the current warming trend.

10. Experiments in natural science show that one-sided observations, those that take no account of the multiplicity of factors determining certain processes in the geo-system, lead to unwarranted simplifications and wrong conclusions when trying to explain natural phenomena. Thus, politicians who rely on incomplete data may take wrong decisions. It makes room for politically correct lobbying, especially on the side of business marketing of exceptionally expensive, so called eco-friendly, energy technologies or those offering CO2 storage (sequestration) in exploited deposits. It has little to do with what is objective in nature. Taking radical and expensive economic measures aiming at implementing the emission only of few greenhouse gases, with no multi-sided research into climate change, may turn out counterproductive.

The PAN Committee of Geological Sciences believes it necessary to start an interdisciplinary research based on comprehensive monitoring and modelling of the impact of other factors -not just the level of CO2 - on the climate. Only this kind of approach will bring us closer to identifying the causes of climate change

In a world where any kind of logic predominated, this study and this article would not be possible. The conclusions stated above do not follow from the premises. The article basically states that because we can't explain ALL the ways climate change COULD happen, we can't explain why the climate is changing now. This has no logic. Analogy: Because we can't explain all the reasons that humans die, we can't say if this man was killed by a gunshot. If enough C02 exists in the atmosphere, the temperature will go up regardless of any other contributing factors. Analogy: If a pot (earth) is over a flame (sun), the interior of the pot will retain more heat with the lid (C02) on than off. Just because we can't explain every possible way for a pot to retain heat (dark matter, quantum entanglement, secret alien ray guns) doesn't mean that we can't explain this instance.

In response to Nicholas S: When the data shows that there have been past episodes where CO2 levels were even higher than at present and the earth somehow recovered from that and cooled, why would it not be logical to pursue an understanding of how that "recovery" occurred ? Is there not a consensus on the goal of achieving another "recovery" ? Should we not try to figure out whether nature will only frustrate any drastic efforts on our part to reduce global temperatures ? If we can identify a time when CO2 levels were even higher than today's levels, yet global temperatures were cooler, shouldn't we be exploring the reasons for that ? Your argument that these kinds of questions don't follow logic is an emotional rant in itself.

XQZME

Apr 24, 2009

Nicholas S: In light of BrentW’s very valid points, I’m sure you want to retract your statement,” If enough C02 exists in the atmosphere, the temperature will go up regardless of any other contributing factors.” CO2 has been increasing since 1998, but the global temperature has been declining. The article identifies very many similar instances in the last several million years. Generally a cause precedes an effect. All scientific reports except one by the economist James Hansen say the evidence points to CO2 following Global Warming. As the article says there are many episodes of global warming and cooling and they correlate with many different effects such as solar cycles, ocean current cycles, volcanoes, etc. And some of these even precede global warming. Therefore the miniscule % of CO2 is not a viable cause.

toothless_redneck

Apr 25, 2009

To wm kohler: Dispense with the perjorative language and deal with the argument. I didn't notice any particular line of argumentation from you that actually attempts to refute the claims of the article. That would actually require spending some time thinking about what the article said. Anybody can simply throw out a few ad hominem attacks to try to discredit the author. The "leaders" in Washington do that all day long. How about going against your natural inclination and provide a cogent demonstration of your position? Maybe then your opinion might be taken seriously.

To WM Kohler: Science is science it is not done be 'consensus'. Any time you read that a 'consensus of scientists' agree, you should be wary that someone is either peddling junk science or that scientists who are dependent on grants are trying to keep a constituent happy. Unfortunately politically correct intolerance has begun to have an effect in scientific research.

Who is to say that the Polish Academy of Sciences has based their conclusions on correct information and/or correct interpretation of the data. The occurrence of very recent natural disasters including tornadoes in Tennessee, wild fires in South, Caroline, and Australia, earthquakes in Indonesia, Italy and China, and floods in North Dakota, Italy, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, African nations, etc. should send a signal to the world population, that what Mr. Gore has disclosed in the Inconvenient Truth is absolutely true. BE VEGAN SAVE THE PLANET is we want to save the planet. The choice is ours.

Apr 25, 2009

If you read the research (not the conclusions) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on their website, they acknowledge it does not take into account certain influences (clouds, for example). The conclusions they reach are based on modeling - modeling is an estimate based on parameters devised for the model. The above article is actually consistent with the IPCC. The article above does not say warming is a myth, it simply warns against dramatic policy without consideration of all factors. Ideas floated about include injection of polutants into the atmosphere to induce cooling - this would be a dramatic reaction to an undetermined cause. We must not diminish our ability to survive and thrive based on a one-sided theory. Take the actions we can to affect the things we understand, without detriment to the whole. This would be the cut off your nose to spite your face approach.

Global Warming is real, whether we like to think it is or not, whether it is simply course of natur or man made or a combination of the two it is still within our moral conscious to do what is right and what is profitable moving forward into the future. This nation can no longer continue to have the conservative mindset of the past. We must be morally sound and do the right thing by the onlyt planet that we have. saying that we are not the problem is a farse. If you are not a part of the solution then you are a part of the problem. Arguing over scemantic and policial issues will, as you will see in your lifetime, have grave consequences for you and your childen and your childrens, children. Damage has already been done, we must now do whatever it takes to take preventative measures to only try to control the ensuing chaos.

Apr 25, 2009

Nicholas, fortunately logic still has some meaning in this world, which is why a majority of Americans now understand AGW is not the crisis it is being made out to be. But thank you for your great analogy about the dead man- you'd blame his death on a gunshot to the big toe (CO2)whilst it was the heart attack (solar forcing) that was causing him trouble- and you'd like to suffocate him (cap and trade) instead of revive him (invest in anti-malarials, water, trade infrastructure, rule of law, pharmaceuticals, ...)

Apr 25, 2009

Climate change is constant, whether warming or cooling. Climate changes were taking place long before man came upon the scene. There have been several periods where the planet cooled enough to cause ice ages followed by periods of warming where the ice melted. While man may have some input, it is minimal at worst. Significant changes in the way we do things regarding energy can only affect microsystems, not the entire globe. The vast majority of polluters in developing countries will not change their tactics to improve their place in the world economy. To place the entire burden of improvement upon one country will cause more economic harm than improvement in the global warming situation. Logic requires that we continue using our present energy resources while pursuing less burdensome energy sources.

I have never believed in in Al Gore's foolishness. The Polish Academy is absolutely right. Anyone who has even the most rudimentary facts regarding the earth's history will discard the notion of of man's gross influence climate change, formerly "global warming" and the ability of man to reverse the trend! - In any case, how has Algore determined that the current climate is the optimum? - Al Gore pushes this idea, because he is making a fortune off this hoax. Cudos to the Polish academy for its analysis. I am a bit disappointed, however, with the Academy's tepid chastisement of the global warming crowd. As an aside related to this subject I recommend the book, "Before The Flood" by Ian Wilson. While the Biblical Flood is the subject, it contains a great deal of information concerning the rise of the ocean levels around 5000 B.C. An afterthought: I think Algore is responsible for the "climate change" because he spews so much hot air!

That's what I'm talking about alamo al. I remember that - when I was in school late '60's and through the 70's. It was all about the coming ice age. That's one of the main reasons I never really believed all this global warming stuff. It's cyclical. Now Algore and his croonies are calling it "climate change" instead of "global warming". Of course the climate is going to change! Probably in 20-30 years from now we'll be talking about the coming "ice age" again. Haven't I heard the global tempature hasn't changed in 9-10 years or something like that. It's a BIG SCAM!

I for one don't think that Al Gore believes in global warming. Consider his carbon foot print: he spends over $30k on heat and electricity yearly, jet sets all over the world and makes huge amounts of money perpetrating his socialist lies. Unfortunately we're the ones to pay as our economy goes down the tubes while most everyone else recovers and if they do the unthinkable and try to force global cooling as they've started planning, while we are in a cooling cycle we will become the pariahs of the world for spreading climate misery and making things worse. I do hope people wake up by next election before Al Gore and his minions ruins the world for everybody!

Good for real scientists to stand up and be counted!!As for man-made global warming: It's about time we realized that 'control freaks' make very poor leaders as scientists, politicians or whatever. I enjoy the comments that start off with the phrase "Global warming is real"; let me see, 1998 was the second hottest year in the 20th century. Since then, 10 years of pollution has been pumped into the atmosphere and China has exceeded the U.S. as the country that pumps out the most pollution and yet, we haven't seen a year as warm as 1998 -- why is that? Oh that's right, the Earth has the ability to "temporarily cool itself" - man these kool-aid people will believe anything. Oh, and it was bright to rename "Global Warming" to "Global Climate Change" - that way, no matter which way the global temperature goes (up or down), Al Gore will be right! Lovely.
