Peer-reviewed study from Down Under points to nature as global warming source

This ought to stir things up royally. Three Australasian scientists have published a study in the Journal of Geophysical Research claiming that virtually none of the observed temperature increases in the Earth’s atmosphere in recent years can be attributed to man-made factors.

Instead, researchers Chris de Freitas at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, John McLean from Melbourne, Australia, and Bob Carter from James Cook University in North Queensland, Australia, ), point to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

The Down Under trio also contend that volcanic activity tends to produce significant cooling trends in the atmosphere.

"The surge in global temperatures since 1977 can be attributed to a 1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean that made warming El Niño conditions more likely than they were over the previous 30 years and cooling La Niña conditions less likely" de Freitas said.

"We have shown that internal global climate-system variability accounts for at least 80% of the observed global climate variation over the past half-century. It may even be more if the period of influence of major volcanoes can be more clearly identified and the corresponding data excluded from the analysis,” he added.

The journal abstract of the study summarizes the conclusion thus: “Overall the results suggest that the Southern Oscillation exercises a consistently dominant influence on mean global temperature, with a maximum effect in the tropics, except for periods when equatorial volcanism causes ad hoc cooling.”

This will be ingnored by the "end of the world is coming" people.

This article and the referenced abstract exhibit common sense and scientific sense, not modelling data to fit the agenda of those controlling the purse strings of grants and appropriations.

But - does this research have any explanation as to WHY there was a "1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean"? I can't seem to find that anywhere. Surely there MUST be a cause - or are to believe that these things 'just happen'?

Seems to have little to do with global warming which has been going on for 130 years. Why don't you global warming deniers ever look at the data?

Unfortunately, this paper is seriously flawed. It's already been pretty thoroughly dissected in several places: http://tamino.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/old-news/

Tom;
It's not the fact of 'global warming' that we deny, it's the automatic and, frankly, hubristic (it's a word now) idea that the only possible cause can be humans. We are not, as the Catholic Church of 500 years ago believed, the center of the universe, nor are we directly or indirectly responsible for every little thing that happens.

Since you say that we 'global warming deniers' don't look at the data, perhaps you could explain, from your long term perusal of the same data, why are Mars and Jupiter warming as well?

I'm just sayin'...

Follow the links given by Hans. This paper is worse than seriously flawed. It should not have been published, and you can expect it to be retracted. That will leave those who jumped on the bandwagon too early looking fairly foolish.

Unfortunately, it *will* devalue people's opinions of peer review. The science will self-correct, but the damage is done.

Again the Washington Examiner didn't ask any other climate scientists to comment on the paper. The critical flaw was comparing the derivatives of the two data sets. This will immediately remove any long term trends: Thus no long term trends were found.

Dan: The prediction of CO2 causing global warming is based on looking at absorbtion spectra of CO2. If you need to check for correlations, historic data, as Tom W points out, shows clear CO2-temperature correlation. Gibberwocky: You say humans can't cause climate change, suggesting that we can't increase the amount of CO2? Check. Either: 1. Just add up the amount of CO2 we emit and compare to total in atmosphere. or 2. Check the isotopic ratios (fossil carbon has different isotopic ratios) or 3. Measure concentrations and look for where else it could be coming from.

Other planets are warming due to an increase in dust and debris entering our solar system. This extra dust is causing a heating effect because it is colliding with the front end of our Sun's magnetic field, hence a large increase in the size of the sun's magnetic field and the supercharged plasma which keeps us safe from cosmic radiation. This has been affecting the sun's behavior, as well as causing the heating effect in our oceans.

The authors themselves admit that the study does not (and cannot) detect trends! (such as that caused by CO2 forcing).

quoting from their comment "[Our] paper does not analyse trends in mean global temperature (MGT); rather, it examines the extent to which ENSO accounts for variation in MGT."

The references I find in the Bible about helping the poor refer to the "orphan and the widow" within the community who could not, in those days, help themselves. You people who are so intent on open borders (Tell me again, how many of the 6.2 BILLION in the world do you want us to support in this country ?)need to write Sr.El Presidente de Mexico and tell him to use some of that oil money, Am. aid, drug money, etc. to provide schools, jobs, and health care for his people. I refuse to take on his responsibility. You open-border types feel so righteous about helping others, but I'd be willing to bet you have some problems in your personal relationships, which you can't handle - so, you "relate" to those far afield; it's so much easier.
