Bush is the new Nixon?

12/02/08 10:55 AM EST

Wait a sec, says Wallace

Nowadays, if you make a political film, the conversation will inevitably touch on the present and President George W. Bush, specifically...like it or not.

That was certainly the case Monday night at National Geographic's Grosvenor Auditorium, where the new Nixon-era film -- "Frost / Nixon" -- was screened before an A-List crowd, including Watergate-alumni Ben Bradlee, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Richard Ben-Veniste and Dan Schorr (who boasted of "the honor of being #14" on Nixon's enemies list). The screening was followed by a panel discussion with director Ron Howard, screenwriter Peter Morgan, historian Robert Dallek and author James Reston, Jr. ("The Conviction of Richard Nixon: The Untold Story of the Frost/Nixon Interviews").

"Frost / Nixon" is a loose dramatization of the televised interviews in 1977 between British journalist David Frost and President Richard Nixon, interviews that became notable thanks to Nixon's rare admission of guilt during the Watergate scandal.

Thanks to that scandal, Nixon walked away from the White House over 34 years ago, but panelists and audience members couldn't help but declare: Bush is the new Nixon.

Howard recalled watching Frost's interview of Nixon back in 1977 and remembered thinking that the take away message from the Nixon years was that "we'll never allow this to happen again."

"That led to some frustration that I've felt in the past few years," said Howard, to applause.

Dallek said that the Nixon administration's themes of "anguish and an imperial presidency" is "what makes this film so timely."

Others wondered who would be the David Frost of the Bush years, i.e., who would conduct a probing, apology-inducing interview of the 43rd president after he leaves office.

"I don't think we'll get it," said Morgan. "I don't get a sense that he'll be as haunted [as Nixon] by a need to leave a legacy."

There to stop the Bush bashing, however, was Fox News' Chris Wallace, who, from his seat in the audience, objected to the Bush / Nixon comparison.

"Whatever George W. Bush did was after the attacks of Sept. 11," Wallace directed towards the panel. "Richard Nixon's crimes were committed purely in the interest of his own political gain. ... To compare what Nixon did ... to George W. Bush trying to protect this country ... is both a gross misreading of history both then and now." Wallace went on to single out Dallek: "You make a supposition without any facts whatsoever!"

All of which led Morgan to sigh...

"This movie is not a Bush metaphor," he said. "I always wanted it not to become a springboard for talking about George Bush."

I am betting that GWB will be so glad to get out of office so that he can't be blamed anymore for everything that goes wrong. Soon the liberal left will not have a horse to beat and will turn on themselves.

Dec 2, 2008

Liberal journalists have VERY limited understanding of most Americans. Thus, your newspapers and TV news programs are a bust. Fact: we live in a dog-eat-dog world. Read some history! Any President who stands up strongly for the economic and political interests of the USA is a good President. President Nixon and both Bushes did exactly that. President of the USA should not be a "Miss Congeniality" contest. The only major abuser of power in our country is the lying, exploiting media. I cheer every bit of news about layoffs and losses in the popular media.

Dec 2, 2008

Naw....the liberals don't eat their own. We've seen enough examples of that from the Rethug's, and especially during this last election. Quite fun, actually.

Dec 2, 2008

I always thought Robert Dallek was a tool of the left, but this latest comment really takes the cake. The sad thing is that this bozo teaches history to our young people.

Good for Wallace. Bush hatred has made people who are supposed to be respected on the basis of integrity (reporters, historians) into propogandists. "this movie is not a Bush metaphor" Morgan sighed (undoubtedly condescendingly) yet he joined in the Bush comparison with glee just moments earlier and probably was one of the biased idiots who applauded when Ron Howard made the comparison. How can you compare the Iraq war to watergate??? Nixon's activities were done in secret and covered up by intelligence agencies. The Iraq war was in response to intelligence published by four world agencies and was declared after Saddam Hussein broke 17 UN resolutions over the course of 2 years (AND WARNED PUBLICLY TO BOOT). WERE ALL THESE JOURNALISTS, HISTORIANS AND MOVIE MAKERS JUST STUPID, BLIND AND LAME WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING??? WHERE WAS ALL THEIR SMART RHETORIC THEN? BUNCH OF COWARDLY HYPOCRITES.

Ah, but he couldn't help himself, could he. Just too tempting. Hollywood is so predictable.

"Soon the liberal left will not have a horse to beat and will turn on themselves" How wrong you are... They will blame Bush for two full years after he's gone, they will start blaming all their troubles on supposed carry over problems that he supposedly caused. It started with Bush "They'll say" it's not our fault for trying to fix it.

Dec 2, 2008

I bet 10 years from now the liberals will still be blaming Bush for everything that is wrong with the country.

Wallace is a Bush apologist -- why would anyone take his word on anything?

Dec 2, 2008

Bush is not entirely Nixon. There's some Hoover in there, too. Wallace, of course, is an apologist. It's been documented that the Bush administration began laying the groundwork for it's extra-constitutional activities before 9/11.

Dec 2, 2008

Why is it that Bush gets all the bashing. No one ever remembers that had Clinton given the word to get Bin Ladin we would have had this war to begin with. There is enough blame to go around starting with Clinton.

Dec 2, 2008

Wallace makes comments based on FACTS and he's called an apoligist? Liberalism is a mental disorder!

Dec 2, 2008

I am a conservative, voted for Nixon and Bush twice, and without question, Bush is the worst President in history. I agree, Bush is not Nixon. His actions have caused more harm to this country than anything Nixon did, and not just the horribly run war. I am a long standing NRA member, former member of the John Birch Society. I know incompetence when I see it. Bush is incompetent. Period.

Dec 2, 2008

Howard isn't fit to lick President Nixon's shoes.

Dec 2, 2008

Although Nixon, supposedly for "peace with honor," prolonged the Vietnam War excessively, his Watergate crimes didn't directly get anyone killed. Watergate is a parking violation compared to what George W. Bush has done.

Dec 2, 2008

Sixty5 Why blame President Bush for the incompetence in the House and Senate.

Dec 2, 2008

Trust me, the Democrats will fail miserably - as always - at governing, and every step of the way, they'll blame George W. Bush for every failure. Even know, after Øbama's campaign promises was a Federal police force consisting of he military is being blamed on Bush. But it will be Øbama and the Democrats in Congress who will implement it, all along blaming Bush. The Dems will destroy the economy, all along blaming Bush, and their mindless sheeple followers will un-thinkingly swallow it whole, just like the citizens of the Third Reich...

Dec 2, 2008

If Bush is the new Nixon, Obama is the new Carter. Boy I can't wait for the new Reagan!

Dec 2, 2008

Well Sixty-5 if yousay Bush is the worst President ever and voted for him twice I guess that shows how friggin smart you are. Don't think I would have told that on myself. He He

Dec 2, 2008

Old news here. Seems all these guys are creating hype to sell another movie. I love to hear and read about the rich fat cats whining. Ratings and job security is all they really care about and their own tax breaks. You guy are not really that important in the larger picture. History may show Opie as a footnote however.

Dec 2, 2008

I am a Conservative, not a liberal, and I beleive GWB will go down in history as one of hte worst Presidents we have ever had. He was not malicious as the Left argues, but he was Stupid! Stupid to take cousel from the people he put in high places that had agendas which are not in the best interests of America or honest and fair Govenment. Nixon lied to America, but got us out of War, GWB's Administration Lied to America and got us into War. I'll take Nixon over Bush and day!!

Dec 2, 2008

I see some people are trying to use logic with Liberals. It doesn't work... When you're into electing Gods who needs brains....

Dec 2, 2008

Bush outed Plame to "protect this country"? Really. A CIA agent and cover "company" working to contain nuclear proliferation in a world where "terrorism on the rise", where there is great fear a rogue group could get their hands on a nuclear weapon or parts thereof to make a "dirty bomb" and Bush outs the head agent and the "company" for purely political purposes (Iraq, who were we kidding then, and who do we think we are kidding now)? Smells Nixon to me.

Dec 2, 2008

(1) This is not a Bush war. Only Congress can declare war, which it did against Iraq after seeing the same information Bush saw. (2) The war Congress declared was won by our commander-in-chief, the generals he commanded, and the brave soldiers who fought. (3) Bush and his father were too nice to be president. I hope when he writes his memoirs he lets the truth rip.

Dec 2, 2008

Ron Howard Brains grew out of the top of his head and then fell out. America has gone r-e-tard if they listen to Richie Cunningham about political history. Why don't we start listening to Brad Pitt about marriage (Mr I won't marry my beloved until two boys exchanging body fluids can get married).

Dec 2, 2008

trudyr_1999@yahoo.com I suppose you would rather have terrorist killing children on American soil. Ask yourself this (ms rocket scientist) statistically how many Americans in that same group of Iraq war veterans would have died in traffic accidents. He actually saved lives. People should have to take a test to be able to vote.

Dec 2, 2008

Bravo, Chris Wallace! Boo, hiss, to Ron Howard (Opie and Richie Cunningham? Hardly!) and pseudo-historian Robert Dallek! A reminder to all: the criminalization of political differences began with the Democrats' attack on John Tower back in 1989 -- because they were tired of taking a back seat to Ronald Reagan. Small minds, small motives.

Dec 2, 2008

The Bush hatred is appalling, totally undeserved. I will NEVER spend another dime on any Ron Howard production. Please relay this comment to him and my thanks to Chris Wallace for speaking some sense to him.

Dec 2, 2008

I'm not the biggest GWB fan in the world, but Mr. Wallace makes a good point. Presidents usually do extraordinary, controversial things during wartime. Lincoln, for instance, had a vocal critic of his (Rep. Clement Vallandigham of Ohio) arrested, tried by military tribunal, and deported. That's hardly a defensible action. But it does underscore Wallace's point that comparing actions done in the service of war execution to actions like those surrounding Watergate is pretty ridiculous. Some people have gotten out of hand with their Bush hatred, I think.

Dec 2, 2008

W embodies prideful incompetence. Nixon hired good people and got a lot done. He acted criminally too, but W has done far worse.

Dec 2, 2008

No, he isn't. Beyond the paranoia, anti-Semitism, and crime, Nixon (a) actually had some personal & professional ethics and (b) was constitutionally elected to each term that he served as president. I'm not a Republican and I frown on the worst of what Nixon had done; nonetheless, Bush is neither ethical, brainy, or curious enough to be the new Nixon. P.S. Nixon also had the amazing ability to admit wrongdoing and accept (a certain amount of) punishment for it.

Dec 2, 2008

Imperial Presidency? Give me a break! How about our esteemed congress which has a history of passing laws from which they exempt themselves. Good going for Chris Wallace. This hatred of Bush is pervasive, yet so many people cannot articulate their reasons. This reminds me of the 'two minutes of hate' from the novel 1984. Talk about mob mentality.

Dec 2, 2008

I'm glad that Mr. Chris Wallace objected to those purely left wing panel. I always respected him, and love watching his show FNS. I always think that Pres. Bush did the right thing (after all,Saddam killed and gassed his own people). I'm not an American, and still respected the decision of Pres. Bush. I believe that majority of people just watch the left wing broadcast media(majority) who portray Mr. Bush as the worst President. History will judge him and not the left wing media (for sure).

Dec 3, 2008

TActually, the President most similar to Nixon in the character of his Presidency was Clinton, who lied under oath and violated his oath of office..... 100% in self-interest. I hear Pelosi is going to offer a bill to rename the San Andreas Fault. She wants to call it George Bush's Fault.

Those who compare Bush and Nixon would make great contestants on the Jay Leno Quiz. Stressing that history's verdict will be very different from that of the press, Gore Vidal, concluded, in his 1983 essay 'Not the Best Man's Best Man,' that Nixon will rank as the greatest U.S. President of the last half of the 20th century. Vidal's credentials as a onetime Nixon-hater are unimpeachable, and his reasons for reaching his conclusion are unassailable.

Dec 3, 2008

Even when Bush leaves office the left will continue to blame him for everything from natural disasters to Obama's foulups. I hope Obama will show us that he can make the kind of tough decisions that Bush has had to make during his presidency. Like him or not he has done what he thought what was right for our country even though he knew it wouldn't be popular.

Dec 3, 2008

what´s worse is that Bush does not have nearly the brains Nixon had. It is like comparing a monkey to an amoeba.

Dec 3, 2008

The hollywood liberals are at it again, the liberals will blame this president for every thing that is wrong with this country. Wonder what you people will do when he leaves office. When we get attached again, (and we will) who will the liberal left blame then.) God bless GWB.

Dec 3, 2008

Ron Howard is a typical Hollywood liberal. He has no education beyond two years at USC in the acting school, but he makes a movie based on his own jaded political agenda and he calls it the truth. I am grateful that Chris Wallace was in the audience to challenge the inaccuracies and the propaganda of these Hollywood liberals.

Dec 3, 2008

What can we expect from these "officialist" historians? It's always the same crowd of JFK lovers. If it's not Dallek, it's Goodwin, if not Beschloss then Norton Smith and so on; always the same crowd of 4 or 5 Nixon haters. And by the way these "historians" which are the regular "go to" guys of the mainstream media are all white and with the exception of Goodwin, all male. The proportions of historians that according to studies say that 85% of liberal arts professors are liberal/democrats also reflect that proportion of academic historians who say Bush is a failure. But Beschloss said recently that Obama is the president with the highest IQ of them all. When asked what was the IQ he said he really "didn't know". So much for objective historians. Nixon may have been all they say, but one of the smartest move in American foreign policy ever made was the opening of relations with China.

bush did everything he said he would and he didnt back down from the rest of the world now you have a president-elect that has destroyed the economy of the planet it gettin hot now

Dec 3, 2008

Either way the mainstream media portrays Nixon/Bush, it is the public that has been spared the the ongoing negligence of previous administrations. Nixon ending JFK/LBJ Vietnam and Bush taking it to Islamic extremists in the war on terror left to fester under Bill Clinton.

Dec 3, 2008

George Bush was vilified from day 1 of his presidency. Many democrats, protesters, and some media outlets characterized him as less than human. I see a lot genuine human compassion in the man. He did what he felt was best and SURPRISE other past president are "guilty" of the same things he's accused of (Lincoln, FDR, Clinton, Reagan). Do you think a Jimmy Carter type would have kept our country free from another attack? He'd be too afraid to hurt the ACLU's feeling. I'm close to labeling Obama a JC-like president, but I give him a couple years before passing judgment.

Dec 3, 2008

It amazes me that these "Hollywood" types criticize a man who has served as our Commander-in-Chief. Mr. Bush had the country's support for his war on terrorism until the media began its war on President Bush and our troops in Iraq. I think the Bush-bashing was done purposefully to distract the American people from the accomplishments he has made and the fact that we were winning the war in Iraq. Say you want about Mr. Bush, but we have not been attacked on our own soil since 9/11. I'd rather have George Bush as our President than anyone who is a "star" in Hollywood. God Bless President Bush for "sticking to his guns."

Dec 3, 2008

Bush is far worse in every respect. As Commander-In-Over-His-Head he has been a complete disaster.

Dec 3, 2008

Hollywood never wants things to become a springboard, what a joke. Hollywood and the movie industry is the springboard.

Dec 3, 2008

Bill Clinton is and was the new Nixon. His entire political agenda focused around destroying his enemies. GWB is about as far from Nixon as you can get.

Dec 3, 2008

Don't you have to wonder why no one in Hollywood has made THE movie that EVERYONE would go see.....???? The William Jefferson Clinton epic!!!! Of course, it would have to be X-rated!!!

Dec 3, 2008

Oh, where is the movie we all want to see? Why doesn't Hollywood come to grips with the WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON story?????

Dec 3, 2008

Are people kidding? Anything that goes wrong in the next four years will be placed on W's shoulders! It doesn't matter what it is, even if it can be directly traced to anyone else (like Congress or the new Pres-elect) they will point fingers right at Bush and his administration. I'm not a big W fan but I think all the finger pointing needs to end and they need to start working on solutions and take a little responsibility when things go wrong and not just when they go right.

Dec 4, 2008

I think Oppie (Ron Howard) has been smoking the corn silk just a little long. Can't you do something this Andy? BTW Aunt Bee says come in for supper and remember to wipe your feet.

Nixon was a god compared to bush

Jan 10, 2009

If the President had stood up to the Iranians in the 70's, would we be dealing with this stuff today? We have sent our children to fight a war that should have been fought in my younger days. If we had fought back then, perhaps we would not have been seen as such an inviting target. And failed enconomic policies, again go back to the 70's. What's going on now doesn't even compare. Double digit inflation, double digit unemployment, yet the 'smartest man' to ever hold office seems to get a pass. Should have elected his brother. At least Billy was an entrapenuer.
