Celebrity watching is never better than when stars and VIPs are out of their element. Witness these unusual scenarios we uncovered this year:

» Russell Crowe waiting in line at Georgetown Cupcake during filming of “State of Play.”

» The Capitals’ Chris Clark and D.C. State Superintendent of Education Deborah Gist riding along with a Blue Angels pilot, as part of a publicity push before the Andrews Air Force base air show in May.

» Actress Lauren Holly greeting patrons of Ceviche in Glover Park at the host desk (she was there for a Creative Coalition event).
» Shaquille O’Neal taking polo lessons at the Great Meadow polo fields in The Plains, Va. O’Neal had visited last summer as he contemplated purchasing the nearby Oasis winery.

» John McEnroe jamming with his band, the Johnny Smyth Band, during lunchtime before he played against the Kastles at night.

» Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine guest bartending at Tattoo on K Street.

» Conservative commentator Bill Bennett going on a date with hippie icon Janis Joplin back in the ’60s (as revealed in his brother Bob’s book).

» D.C. Councilman Marion Barry appearing in Chuck Brown’s latest video, “Party Roll.”

» And those rock ’n’ rollers love their art: Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Kiss’ Paul Stanley both held local art shows to promote their paintings, while “Prince of Darkness” Ozzy Osbourne appeared at the Tysons Corner Nordstrom to hawk his line of T-shirts.
