Birthers? Why didn't the Truthers get all this attention?

By: David Freddoso

Twenty-eight percent of Republicans believe President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, and 30 percent are "not sure," according to this poll.

But before liberals begin to smirk, here's a poll from 2007, in which 35 percent of Democrats said that President Bush knew in advance about the 9/11 attacks, and 26 percent were not sure.

So if 58 percent of Republicans are living in a delusional fantasy world because they are out of power, then 61 percent of Democrats were doing the same thing until just recently (perhaps they still are). It's a clean, apples-to-apples comparison with a clear lesson: People get a bit kooky when they're out of power, Democrats about 3 points kookier -- which is probably within the margin of error.

I bring this up because I did a short mid-afternoon segment today on MSNBC with Tamryn Hall and Donnie Deutsch, in which I was asked about the Birther poll. I brought up the Truther poll and wondered aloud whether MSNBC had ever brought as much attention to the Truthers.

The Birthers are getting an awful lot of coverage right now, and that's great news for a White House desperate for distractions. President Obama is losing the public opinion battle over health care and putting his foot in his mouth over Henry Gates. His only major legislative accomplishment so far -- the stimulus package -- is widely perceived as a costly and ineffective boondoggle.

I was also asked about a video shot by the thoroughly disreputable Mike Stark, whose selective editing and misidentification of members of Congress contributes to the appearance, at least, that a significant number of Republican members of Congress are "Birthers" -- or at least that they won't say they're not Birthers. Stark, you may recall, is the man who made a scene during a 2006 Senate race by shouting repeatedly while cameras were rolling in order to start an unsubstantiated rumor that then-Sen. George Allen, R-Va., spat on his first wife.

Tamryn then asked a good question: Back in the Bush Era, did any Democratic members of Congress avoid questions about whether "Bush Knew?" On the spot, I couldn't remember. But the truth is, they didn't just avoid the question -- they stoked the flames of conspiracy theories and in some cases embraced them.

A few names: Hillary Clinton (the famous Bush Knew" speech of May 16, 2002), Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, and then-Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D, Ga.). When I covered Congress for Human Events, I asked Rep. William Lacy Clay, D,Mo., about McKinney's suggestion that Bush might have withheld knowledge of the attack. His reply: "I'm curious as to whether it will reveal what Congresswoman McKinney has stated. I'm interested. I'm interested in an investigation."

So who's kooky now?

I am a proud Birther.
There's nothing kooky in wondering if Obama meets the eligibility requirements to be POTUS.
We do not know his citizenship status, do we? I'm not going to rely on info on Snopes and factcheck.org. Obama needs to produce his records for authentication.

David you are incredibly ignorant. To compare people who want obama to release his long form birth certificate and his college records to truthers is an insult. You are a disgrace, instead of investigating the story your labeling us as nuts. Screw you david!

Aug 1, 2009

There's a little difference, you know.
The truthers base their claims on idiocies like "fire cannot melt steel", the birthers on the provable fact that Obama won't release his records. I think Obama's american, but that he's hiding things about his past.

I find the whole episode funny to no end as it highlights the absurdity of the entire sham of loony Barack Obama and his hordes of sycophantic supporters.

How big of a nut do you have to be to be EMBARRASSED by something on your birth certificate?

I am LMAO at Obama supporters who thought this man was "going to lower the oceans, pay their mortgages and solve all their life issues", but now we find our that Obama is such a fragile and insecure doofus that something on a piece of paper from his birth is TOO MUCH for him to handle publically?????

Funny as hell and it makes the idiots who bought into the "hope and change" look like the idiots they are.

As a loyal Republican, I accept the reality that Obama was born in the US. The only additional item that would be included on the so-called "long-form" birth certificate would be the hospital where he was born. But that is moot since we already know the city where he was born--and that was in Hawaii. Birthers, please do not look like ignorant fools like the lefties do about 9/11

I'm wondering what all his applications for college and different places says about Obama's POB.

Aug 2, 2009

If Obama really was born in Hawaii, and really is a US citizen, why not release the birth certificate? Obama could put an end to this in the day, or couple of hours, it would take for the document to be broadcast around the world.

But he hasn't. Perhaps because he can't. I don't know why, but there has to be something worth hiding and worth sending an army of lawyers and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep under wraps.

What is it? Foreign birth, making Obama ineligible to be president? Did he take scholarship money intended for non-US students by saying he was foreign born on a college application? Is he adopted with no idea who his parents are, also raising issues with his eligibility to serve?

We just don't know. Obama is the only one who can resolve the question. And it won't go away.

What is so funny about the "birther" movement is that they claim that obama hasn't released his birth certificate, while a quick google search will unveil that not only has he released his birth certificate, you can download a copy of it and study it, multiple groups including fact check.org went to hawaii to study the original document and posted about it.

A birther probably won't believe it until the original is brought to him at his house by OBama himself. The whole birther movement is of course a closet rascist movement.

Aug 2, 2009

Following the logic espoused by the post authored by "thetruth" -- the use of the word "they", spelling the President's name "obama" rather than "Obama", and the assertion that the President needs to be some sort of "delivery boy" all support my contention the "thetruth" is a racist.

Two men running for president, 1 white and 1 black. Both have questionable citizenship status based on where they were or might have been born. Both are asked to produce documentation. One, obfuscates and delays before finally presenting a scanned copy of a "certificate of live birth" (note that the date this document was created has been redacted); the other (John McCain), born in Panama at the naval base, presents the appropriate documents readily. Was it "racist" to ask either man to provide these documents?

Perhaps if I suggested the President was a gorilla and/or a monkey? Both Presidents Lincoln and Bush were lampooned as such - was this racist? Would it be if I characterized Obama that way?

The "racism" label is too often used by those on the left. Perhaps the adage that "it takes one to know one" is true.

Candidate Obama gave the vetters more than a year to validate his birth certificate. Yet, thousands (if not millions) of people refuse to believe he is a native-born American. Why is this benefit of the doubt not extended to EVERY CANDIDATE WHO RUNS FOR PRESIDENT? Wait, it is. Except for Obama. Get over yourselves. I happen to believe that the native-born requirement is antiquated, and should be replaced with citizenship and residency requirements, so Austrian governors of California can run for President. (If unrepentant racists and segregationists can run for President, why not naturalized citizens who have lived in this country for 17 years?) For the record, truthers and birthers are conspiratorial lunatics.

not surprising some liberals think 9/11 was an inside job---some/most liberals feel really brave when they say such things. nothing's going to happen to them for being so "controversial," but they think they're like soldiers fighting the big, bad, meanie-meanies.

I can't believe it's taken this long for a conservative writer to point out that liberals were blaming Bush for being complicit in 9/11, a stooge for Haliburton, glad that Katrina killed black people... basically one rung below Hitler on the humanity scale. What the hell is wrong with conservatives? Grow a pair and fight back against this race baiting socialist in the White House half as hard as liberals did against Bush.

1) McCain's legal team has come out publicly and stated that they are satisfied Obama is eligible to be POTUS; and it is a pretty safe bet that the Clinton legal team also came to that conclusion as well. Why? Because can anyone really imagine the Clintons NOT revealing his ineligibilty to be POTUS once Hillary started losing to him in the primaries??? No, I didn't think so...

2) So why does Obama not end the controversy? As was pointed out, because this is a useful distraction; it keeps a portion of his enemies occupied chasing a red herring, and consequently allows his supporters to point & laugh at them... and, by extension, all conservatives.

Once more, for emphasis... INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. Barack had to prove his natural-born citizenship before he could register as a Presidential candidate. He didn't have to prove it to YOU, ot Lou Dobbs, or Melanie Scarborough, but he had to prove that he was LEGALLY QUALIFIED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT. He also had to prove he was old enough to run, that he had lived in this country for 17 years and so forth. If that legal process isn't proof enough for you, then how much faith do you have in our nation's rule of law? Despite all of that process, you demand that the President prove himself to YOU. That is the height of sophistry. The onus is the birthers to prove that he didn't follow the proper legal procedures to run for President. He is innocent until YOU prove him guilty of skirting the law as a Presidential candidate.

Obama did release a birth certificate, it's been examined by Hawaii state officials and by independent observers. You can go to factcheck.org where then have closeup shots of the signatures, raised seals etc. It has all the same information on it that my birth certificate does.

I actually doubt that even many birthers believe what they are saying. It is more likely that 28% of Republicans WANT to believe Obama isn't a citizen whether it is true or not, and everyone else knows a waste of time when they see one. Anyone who is going to buy the birther story wasn't going to vote for Obama in the first place, so this is not even doing the Republican's cause any good. If you have issues with Obama (I have a few myself and did not vote for him) then get over this and challenge him on _issues_.

Aug 2, 2009

If Obama would release the long form of his birth certificate, this would be a non-issue.

The longer this "birther" meme goes on, the more I lose respect for the media figures that give countenance to their arguments. This goes DOUBLE for the rule-of-law-supporting conservatives that are sympathetic to the birther arguments. I beseech the Examiner's editors: Do you REALLY want to publish the sentiments of columnists who buy into this bushwa? Colin Powell was right: What are you trying to say?

Elmer_Stoup

Barely About Barack:
The natural born requirement is in the Constitution. It's a lot tougher to change than you apparently think. And, no, I'm not a birther. I am a conservative who thinks we should "move on." We have many more things to criticize Pres. Obama about.

Barely About Barack

Aug 2, 2009

Elmer, I agree with everything you said. I just happen to believe that Constitutional law was not violated when he became a candidate. The birthers refuse to believe that his qualifications were established through the proper legal channels, prior to his candidacy. It's strange how respect for the legal process dissolves, now that Barack Obama has won a free and fair election.

Ah, how soon we forget how far up the Bush-haters crawled for every piece of information they could glean--fact or fiction--to discredit President Bush. So this door does indeed swing both ways. The left always counts on the short memory (and attention span) of the public. Better to pull the wool over your eyes my dears.

Aug 2, 2009

The irony in all this is that the Prince of Change was also supposed to be ruling in the Land of Transparency. Instead, he's paying expensive lawyers millions of dollars to obfuscate and make certain that no one can lay eyes on records that would be required to get a job in entry-level management. And incidentally, an inconvenient truth, there is a difference between a Certificate of Live Birth, which is what our president has deigned to allow us to see, and a complete birth certificate, which is under lock and key, in the State of Poi, Lava, and Pay-Back.

A comment to Barely About Barrack - the problem w/the Austrian Governor of California is look what he's done for California!! And as far as Obama's possibly questionable citizenship: If it comes out that he's NOT eligible to be president, that means we have Joe I-can't-keep-my-foot-out-of-my-mouth-long-enough-to-say-anything-intelligent Biden sitting on the throne. Heaven help us. . . . .

There's a difference between having a spirited debate about the tax code, and NOT BELIEVING THAT THE PRESIDENT WAS BORN IN THIS COUNTRY. The former is a subjective debate about unknown consequences. The latter is a debate about A MATERIAL FACT. None of us knows anything; it's about trust and faith in the legal system to verify such things. I don't know where the President was born, but I trust the legal process that validated his eligibility for President. (In short: if he wasn't born here, he would never have been allowed to run.) My opponents don't know where the President was born either, but they REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT HE WAS BORN IN THIS COUNTRY. How do you function in civil society, not believing anything that isn't right in front of your face? If you get to see the birth certificate, what will convince you that it's legit? If you don't get to see it, who or what will convince you that he is native-born?

This is comparing apple to oranges. The poll that is being referenced is saying that Bush knew about 9/11. In a sense, he did, since a memo was released the Bin Ladin Determined to Attack the United States. Truthers believe that Bush brought the towers down with charges and all sorts of other crap. If THAT was a poll question I sure as hell promise you that WAY less than 28 percent of Dems polled would say yes. Birthers are obviously idiots, along the same line as truthers. What a sad world we are in.

Funny, these right wing Lulus somehow got through eight years of George Bush without ever burdonning the rest of us with the breaking news that they, personnally had never seen his birth certificate, and so they were not sure about where he was born. I couldn't care less where this guy was born. I think the American people should be able to elect whomever we want, whether an overt alien or a person running for a 3rd term.

What troubles me far more than where he popped from the womb, is why the American people voted him in. And with far too much of a plurality than ACORN could have provided. Why did American Jews give the most pro-Muslem candidate in history (except Patrick Buchanan), almost 80% of their vote?

Why did the entire citizenry of this country elect a man with no accomplishments and so much baggage-Saul Olinsky, Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, an openly America hating wife?

The problem with that 61% figure of Democrats who believed or were not sure that Bush knew in advance about 9/11 is that it probably includes a lot of people who knew that Bush had received warnings of a planned attack. That is a fact, the Bush adminstration did receive warnings of an attack. That does not mean all those democrats believed that Bush and Cheney knew when, by whom exactly, by what planes etc. So to compare the two groups as both as nutty is wrong.
