53 House Republicans call on Obama to fire Kevin Jennings

By: Byron York

A group of 53 Republican members of the House has sent a letter to the president asking for the removal of Kevin Jennings, the gay activist who now runs the Education Department's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. "It is clear that Mr. Jennings lacks the appropriate qualifications and ethical standards to serve in this capacity," the lawmakers write.

The letter was written by Rep. Steve King, who last week became the first lawmaker to call for Jennings to be fired. Among the signers of the new letter are some prominent members of the House GOP, including Republican Conference chairman Rep. Mike Pence, along with Reps. Paul Ryan, Darrell Issa, John Carter, Patrick McHenry, Spencer Bachus, Duncan Hunter, Michelle Bachmann, and 45 others.

"As the founder of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Mr. Jennings has played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools—an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children," the lawmakers write in the letter to Obama. "There is more to safe and drug free schools than can be accomplished from the narrow view of Mr. Jennings who has, for more than 20 years, almost exclusively focused on promoting the homosexual agenda."

Jennings has come under heavy criticism from many conservatives for, among other things, his work to introduce gay themes into the nation's classrooms, including elementary schools; the foreword he wrote for a book entitled Queering Elementary Education; his lack of experience in school safety and drug issues; some of the work of the organization he founded, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network; and his handling of an incident in 1988 in which, as a high school teacher, Jennings was approached by a sophomore boy who confided that he had become involved with an older man, and Jennings, rather than notify school authorities, simply advised the boy to use a condom.

King says he believes the new letter might influence the administration, which has so far been staunch in its defense of Jennings. "A week ago, Barney Frank was declaring me to be a bigot," King says. "Now, we have 53 who have taken a stand on this….I think the president has to listen to what I think is the core of the mainstream values of America."

Here is the full text of the letter to Obama:

Dear Mr. President,

We respectfully request that you remove Kevin Jennings, the Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, from your Administration. It is clear that Mr. Jennings lacks the appropriate qualifications and ethical standards to serve in this capacity.

As the founder of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Mr. Jennings has played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools—an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children. As evidence of this, Mr. Jennings wrote the foreword for a book titled Queering Elementary Education: Advancing the Dialogue About Sexualities and Schooling. Throughout his career, Mr. Jennings has made it his mission to establish special protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students to the exclusion of all other students. The totality of Mr. Jennings’ career has been to advocate for public affirmation of homosexuality. There is more to safe and drug free schools than can be accomplished from the narrow view of Mr. Jennings who has, for more than 20 years, almost exclusively focused on promoting the homosexual agenda.

Equally troubling is Mr. Jennings’ self-described history of ignoring the sexual abuse of a child. In his book, One Teacher in Ten, Mr. Jennings recounts a 15-year old student confiding in him that he had a sexual relationship with a much older man. Mr. Jennings’ only response was to ask if the underage boy used a condom. As a mandatory reporter, Mr. Jennings was required by law to report child abuse, including sex crimes. Mr. Jennings cannot serve as the “safe schools” czar when his record demonstrates a willingness to overlook the sexual abuse of a child.

As the “safe schools” czar, Mr. Jennings is also charged with ensuring our schools and students are drug free. It is clear that Mr. Jennings is unfit to serve in this capacity, as well. His own history of unrepentant drug and alcohol abuse indicates that he is of the opinion that getting drunk and high as a young person is acceptable. In his memoir, Mama’s Boy, Preacher’s Son, Mr. Jennings describes his use of illegal drugs, without expressing regret or acknowledging the devastating effects illegal drug use can have on a person’s life.

Everyone that deals with the education of the most vulnerable must be a positive role model. Our children are not blessed with the wisdom to discern and reject. Children presume the adults who educate them are approved by the larger society and their parents. Kevin Jennings cannot gain the approval of parents who want their children safe and their schools drug free. You should replace him with someone who has a record of educating children in a safe and moral environment.

Given these very serious issues with Mr. Jennings’ record, we urge you to remove him immediately.

The signers of the letter are: King; Alexander; Aderholt; Akin; Austria; Bachmann; Bachus; Bartlett; Barton; Boozman; Broun; Brown, H.; Carter; Chaffetz; Coffman; Cole; Conaway; Davis, Geoff; Fallin; Fleming; Foxx; Franks; Garret; Gingrey; Gohmert; Hunter; Issa; Jordan; Lamborn; Latta; Luetkemeyer; Marchant; McClintock; McHenry; McKeon; McMorris; Mica; Miller, J.; Myrick; Neugebauer; Olson, P.; Pence; Pitts; Posey; Rogers; Rooney; Ryan, Paul; Shuster; Smith, C.; Smith, L.; Wamp; Westmoreland; and Jones, Walter.

I know that anything less than condemnation and violence towards other peoples children disturbs many right-wingers to the core (How dare you suggest that your children or even those children over there are human and equal in front of my children, they say) ... but thankfully too many people still appear to have a working conscience.

Of course this has nothing to do with "promoting homosexuality," as if that disposition is even promotable. The fair treatment of gay youth isn't going to make your child any more gay than it would have made you gay if/had such treatment been the case when you were going to school. It can't be taught or contracted, and If you believe otherwise, I think your wilfully blinding yourself to the reality of others and your own experience.

There is no doubt Kevin Jennings' extensive community organizing in public schools is designed for the gltb identity politics only. How much funding has GLSEN receiving from the U.S. Department of Education?

Call it being a bigot i don't care. I am not against gay people but i am definitely
against their life style and don't want it forced on me or my family. And don't tell me that kids can't be swayed. I personally know a young woman who was a very good athlete and she had two gay coaches that she looked up to. It wasn't long until this young woman was participating in the gay life style. It was a choice she made and one that she very much regrets today but she feels like there is no going back. So as for me, Mr. Jennings needs to go!

JakeH., The issue here is that Jennings is protecting only one group, not all children. The essence of Jennings career has been to make LGBT students MORE equal than other students. Do you suppose he would support a straight, Christian student being attacked by other students or ridiculed by teachers and administrators. I bet he hasn't spoken up for those kids.

No way, no how!!!
This is why they declared war on Fox News to provide cover and distraction and to prove to the loony leftist that they have some balls (a myth at best except Michelle (the Klingon)). The far left already believes that he is a eunuch and he fills the need to prove that he is not (Michelle has them locked away for safe keeping).

I am a liberal democrat and I agree that Mr. Jennings should not be serving in this capacity. Sex by an adult with a 15 year old is abuse and a high school teacher is mandated to report it. It doesn't matter if the teacher is gay, straight, Republican or Democrat, sexual abuse is sexual abuse.

Zach Wamp once again shows his hypocrisy. He's willing to cover up for Mark Sanford and John Ensign (and others) when they are cheating on their wives ... but just because Kevin Jennings tries to protect the civil rights and safety of LGBT kids, Wamp wants him fired. Wamp signs a letter demanding Jennings' head on a platter for the fact that Jennings talked to a student about safe sex 21 years ago, but covers for his C-Street cronies.

This is beyond disgusting. Totally unacceptable.

Leviticus 18:22 God calls homesexual relations "disgusting" He says that anyone practicing homosexual relations must be exluded from the people of God. 1 kings 14:24, Romans 1:23-24 tells us that God considers a perversion of his design. Genesis 19:4-5 Genesis 18:16-19:29 etc. Sounds to me like the guy is a pervert that condones sex with children. Get rid of him. He may be having sex with children himself (who knows)

This man, Kevin Jennings, is not a good example for our kids. He ought to be removed immmediately. Does not the Obama White House vet their czars? Jennings seems to agree with the very perverted views of the organization LAMBDA, which promotes sex between young boys and grown men. How can such a person serve in the White House?

The sad truth is that not enough people are standing up to these doughhead leftists that make laws, break laws and appoint jerks like jennings into high positions. The far left has proven over and over again that they are nothing more than spoiled children with an agenda that allows anyone to do what they want, when they want as long as the individuals agree with their type of dillusional thinking. Liberal no longer stands for tolerant. Tolerant only if you agree with them. Liberalism: Learned-Idealism-Based on-Emotional-Responses- and Attacks on-Logic-Intelligence-Sanity-and Morality.

It's about time Washington had a wake up call. People are tired of the "do anything we want" crybabies running the show. If roughly 85% of the people in this country are sick and tired of the radical left dweebs forcing their agenda, then that 85% needs to take it up with the morons appointed who are doing absolutely nothing but stripping this country of God his morals. Kick em all out and get some solid structure back in government.

Why don't the Republicans worry about the Obama czars that make a difference to America---like the multitudes of ex-Goldman Sachs types that are busy picking your pockets for trillions of dollars for their friends on Wall Street.

Instead our politicians use the abortion vs gay type of frivolous issues to keep Americans deflected from the pillaging of America.

So the criticism here is that as a teacher Jennings has helped gay students.

If you talk to many gay students, you'll find out that they are often targets of physical and emotional abuse by their classmates. Drop out rates and suicides are high because of this abuse. I applaud Jennings for doing something about it. He is a model for us all.

As for the conversation he had with a 16 (not 15) year old student (which has been verified by the student himself). Jennings didn't violate any policy.

I hope Obama ignores this silly letter. Jennings has done nothing wrong.

What is this... gay lifestyle that the right keeps promoting? I am a young gay man myself. I was raised a Roman Catholic, attending mass every weekend with my parents who raised me to always be kind, always study hard, be active in sports, and strive to make my future better. I went to a good university, I was never abused as a child and had a very present father and mother.

I would never choose to be gay, but it is how I have been since puberty, always recognizing the difference, knowing that I was romantically and physically attracted to men and not women.

I've only been to one gay bar, but that is proximity and went there for a fundraiser. I play soccer, run, love video games, study, drink beer.

Where is this gay lifestyle? I can't seem to find it. It sounds fun. Can any right-wing conservative or conservative Christian point it out for me. I'd like to check it out...

More hate from heterosexuals. Heterosexuals always fallback on sex to undermine gay people because even if sex is not involved in the situation heterosexuals will believe it anyway because sex plus gay people always equals something bad to the heterosexuals. The attacks on Kevin are purely bigoted and solely because he's gay.

Anyway, Kevin Jennings needs to stay in his job. He is greatly needed and a wonderful person.

OhMy

Oct 15, 2009

I would like to wish Mr. Jennings all the best in his new position. It is obvious by the comments of some that there is a great need for Gay-Straight Alliance groups in our schools. Unfortunately the schools where they would aid those most in need are the schools least likely to ever have one. No one is taught at home, or in school to be gay. They are taught at home and school how to hate and tease. Well just maybe now they can learn better christian values like "love thy neighbor" at school then they do at home. I was raised as a christian in a very loving home. For whatever reason I am gay. Not what my parents had wanted for me, but I am their son and they love me because they know they raised me in their eyes in a wholesome environment. In a way it has made them more loving people as well. So cheers to all you folks spewing hate. With or without Mr. Jennings some of your little tykes will end up being gay. It might make you into decent people.

"The essence of Jennings career has been to make LGBT students MORE equal than other students"
you do realize you can't be more equal, you can be greater than (or equal to), less than (or equal to), or just equal to. Now at first when I read this I figured you ment approaching totally equality, that one way to read "more equal" which I feel is Jennings approach. But upon rereading it you do clearly say MORE equal than other students. Thats like saying I wear a size extra medium

How does one "promote homosexuality" in America? We hardly put it on a pedestal in our culture. As a straight man, I have no interest in having sex with another man, regardless of how many reruns of "Will and Grace" I were to sit through. Are you worried that Mr. Jennings will replace the Pledge of Allegiance with Judy Garland recordings? Because if he does, god help us, every kindergartner will start prancing around limp-wristed and want to join NAMBLA. If Jesus could see the nonsense you propagate in the name of his religion, he'd slap you in the face.
