Stop embarrassing us, Mr. Rangel. Resign

Want to understand why 2009 has witnessed the eruption of Tea Party and Town Hall protests of unprecedented intensity? Look no further than Rep. Charles Rangel, the New York Democrat who is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee that writes tax law for the rest of us.

A parade of steadily more serious revelations was capped with news that Rangel somehow forgot to report as much as half a million dollars in assets and income on his 2007 financial disclosure report. It's impossible to know exactly how much he forgot to report because Rangel and most of the rest of the career politicians in both parties who have run Congress for the past several decades conveniently designed their disclosure form to be as opaque as possible.

That's why they can report "ranges" of income and asset value. Let you or I try reporting a range of income on our 2009 income tax return and see what happens.

That's why people are angry. The realization is sweeping the ranks of productive Americans that they've been taken for a ride by the professional politicians at all levels of government but especially in Washington - and by their enablers and allies in the liberal media, on campus, the ranks of leftist non-profit activists, in the foundation and think tank worlds, and the ranks of the Fortune 500.

And people are up to here with it. Democrats, Republicans, Independents. That's why they are going to these town hall meetings and talking back to their congressmen. That's why Glenn Beck's fact-based emotional appeals are making him the most-watched man on cable TV. It's why public support for Obama and Obamacare are plummeting.

Rangel's explanations for his various financial disclosure dodges have ranged from making honest mistakes to not understanding the Spanish spoken by some of his tenants. And none of it is credible any more. His evasions and rationalizations are embarrassing to anybody who cares about preserving the credibility of government.

It's time for him to leave.

It's not like he's got nowhere to go. There's always that little rental villa he owns at the Punta Canta Yacht Club in the Dominican Republic. He forgot to report $75,000 in income he derived from that asset but I am betting it's looking a lot more attractive to him as a retirement spot these days.

And you can bet a range from your next paycheck that Rangel is far from the only congressman who should go home for good.

Absolutely, this public servant is a disgrace. Forget about resigning, he should be in jail for tax evasion.

This has got to stop..and WE THE PEOPLE can do it..by voting these jerks OUT!! This article is correct, let you or I list a range of anything on our tax forms and we would be fined and put in jail. We are so fed up with the likes of Pelosi, Rangel, Reid.....let them all get out and let's really move this country in a new direction...one with pride, honor, and decency!!!

"The fish rots from the head down." Remember that from a few years ago? The current stench seems to be much stronger as the whole fish rots. Cabinet members, members of Congress, members of the Executive... We need serious fumigation.

Try as he may, Rangel just can't stay off a high perch in the nyscandals.com rankings despite some very worthy competition.

Thieves like him in our high offices makes it difficult to be proud of my America anymore.

The really disturbing part of all this is that Rangel's constituents seemingly do not care. They keep returning him to office.

Because of safe districts and the seniority system, we end up with chairman whom no one in their right mind would select. Waxman? Rangel? Dodd? If Pelosi really had to stand for a vote of the whole country, I doubt she could get much more than 20%.

Sometimes, we do have a weird system.

His Harlem base love it when a black man
scams "whitey". Cholley "the rasp" has
been gettin' his for years now. Holder
is NOT interested in an investigation
because the black Dem caucus will not
refer any charges. Cholley skates again,
but what about Sanford! Now THERE is
real corruption. What you all need to
realize is that Obama's new mania
for redistribution of wealth will be
done with bulldozers, not "consensus".

Is it just me or do any of you agree that by the time the elections come around next year - we may not be able to vote fairly due to the corruption that is taking place now?? I think the democraps are setting things up that will prevent anyone voting them out.

This is why we all need to get involved and get to know who these people are and what they are doing. If we do nothing it will only get worse.

Charles Rangel is the FACE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. With each passing day, it becomes more obvious that the Attorney General, the leadership of the House and Senate and the Office of the President are all a party to the Rangel corruption.
This, "the most transparent" is clearly by far the MOST CORRUPT administration in the past fifty year. The DOJ and the White House are the center of national corruption.
Democrats began looting the U.S. Treasury when they took control of the congress in 2006 funneling hundreds of billions of dollars to their front groups Ameri Corps and Acorn. The stimulus package has turned out to be a pool of money that Dems can use without restraint to fund their criminal activities...

Rangel should have resigned long ago, before any of these issues surfaced in the press. I am still waiting on the ethics inquiry Pelosi promised in January, but then again, all crooked politicians seem to cover-up for each other, so nothing ever changes in Washington.

We the people - 2010...Show them who they work really work for!

I would simply laugh derisively and mock these asshats for their buffoonery if the stakes weren't so serious.

But they are - so we need to run these criminal clowns out of Washington in 2010 and take back our country.

Deborah, I have been thinking the same thing. How do WE really know that Obama was FAIRLY elected? How will we know in future elections if our vote really counts? This is not my AMERICA as I have known and loved.

Lebo

If he does leave, can he take about 434 people along with him so we can have a clean sweep?

Lots of villages in America are suffering, and need their idiots back.

sportnwoody

The worst part about this whole thing is his lack of shame and expression of "It's no big deal". These criminals are above the law and they throw it in our faces. When they are elected in a district like NYC most people have there hand out and don't pay taxes or care if Mangle Rangel steals from working taxpayers. Things will get a lot worse before they get better, I hope our country can survive this corruption.

I think one essential element of needed reform is the elimination of retirement plans for all Senators and Representatives. That reform, in itself, would discourage the lifers in those two bodies and would substantially reduce the corruption that comes, inevitably, with more or less permanent residence in the halls of congress.

I'm glad to see some news about this guy...I hope therer is a "real" investigation and he's prosecuted soon...stealing from taxpayers - somebody stop the government corruption, please.
