Obama takes swipe at Bush in Memorial Day message

In his weekly radio address, President Obama took time to commend American fighting forces and to explain how his defense, veterans and even economic programs (which he continues to call the "New Foundation") are part of serving the armed forces.
It might have been superior for the president to have offered only a patriotic message and a word of thanks and remembrance for the fallen soldiers, but that's debatable.
What seems wholly out of place, though, is the president's swipe at his predecessor, George W. Bush, and others:
"Our fighting men and women – and the military families who love them – embody what is best in America. And we have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us.
And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve. That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear – and all who have worn – the proud uniform of our country."
That is the president's lead in to talking about his military requisitioning plans, veterans' funding and his economic program. It's how Obama often sets things up -- create a straw man opponent to his policies and then attack.
It gets little notice, but even to this day Bush makes calls on wounded veterans at military hospitals, corresponds with families of fallen servicemembers and gives his own money to veterans charities. In office, Bush hugely increased funding for veterans programs and worked relentlessly to improve the lot of ordinary troops.
Bush gets hit pretty hard for the shabby state of things at Walter Reed Hospital that was exposed during his term, but the servicemebers I've talked to know that Bush loves them and takes their well being seriously. You may feel that Bush is undeserving of that respect because he initiated the Iraq war, but in terms of his respect for and treatment of the men and women in uniform, he is sincere.
President Obama may come to have a similar rapport with the military, but he won't help that by trying to advance his agenda as an alternative to the mistakes made "in recent years."
The Memorial Day weekend message should have been an easy opportunity for the president to talk about the sacrifices and heroism of the current members of the military and how it is part of a 235-year tradition of gallantry and sacrifice. Someonein the White House press office needs to get off the political grind.

I served during 56-60 in the army with pride.I would have a very hard time to do a hitch today under this so called leader.

I am growing weary of the constant complaining about the past administration and self congratulating of this current administration. When does the campaign end?

When can we expect the clueless, thoroughly unqualified community organizer to provide the names of those people who he alleges "failed to give [members of the U.S. military] the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve" Also, when will that fool explain, in detail, how some people allegedly "failed to give [members of the U.S. military] the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve"?

It seems that the people who fail to give the military the respect they deserve are the very people that Obama has surrounded himself with for his entire career. Recently, Murtha, Kerry, Ayres, Code Pink, hmmmm what do they all have in common? Obama supporters all and insulting to the military.

Obama made a similar statement in his address to the graduating class of the U.S. Naval Academy yesterday. It was NOT greeted with wild applause. His other statement that fell absolutely flat--in spite of the fact that he paused in anticipation of applause that didn't occur--was that Michelle was visiting military families and was concerned about their plight. The military recognizes duplicity.

For a guy who is supposed to be so smart and confident, it is VERY apparent (by his constant, non-stop slamming of Bush) that "that moron Bush" is all up inside Barack Obama's insecure head. Obama has no class, no graciousness and no generosity. He's a thug who looks good in a suit.

Ah yes, the country's pragmatic leader who professes respect and support of the troops while he proposes spending on all manner of programs and entitlements but reduces spending on the military. He selectively releases "torture" memos and threatens a slew of photos be released around Memorial Day only to reconsider and then change position which of course has nothing to do with what that evil Dick Cheney might have said. This President has about as much respect for the troops as either of the Clintons. I know I feel safer with the new strength through weakness and capitulation.

Why is it a swipe at Bush and not both he and Clinton to talk about the "recent years and decades" of military support? Lest we forget: "You go to war with the army you have, not the one you might wish you had" -Rumsfeld

I have absolutely no respect for Obama, none. I've tracked his verbals and non-verbals since he started campaigning. he is a liar, a patronizing radical whose best years were attending his church. He is an absolute insult, and on this day, our day after 32 years service, I am stunned that the sheep have betrayed the sheepdogs in this country, and think its neato and kewl. They are in bed with wolves and the chieg amongst them is President. Mark my words, you will dearly regret the day he sat in the Oval Office. he is a saboteur whose first actions were to meet enemy objectives and he did in fact do that.

I agree vincenzo4 completely. He has already deceived the American People and will continue to do so. The men and women in Washington are nothing more than corporate executives while the real villians (Rockefellers, Rothchilds, etc.) stand behind the curtain controlling each and every move. The people of this country better realize what's ahead for all of us. It's not going to a pretty site! Knowledge is power and we all better start waking up to the truth of the matter!

It does amaze me that while he talks support for the military and for those who serve, in the background he is proposing gutting the military budget by the bigger percentage than Clinton. Yet the threats continue, North Korea, Iran, the possible fall of Pakistan to terrorist, the escalating drug war in Mexico, and the continued terrorist strikes around the world and he wants to gut defense spending? We don’t need a Commander in Chief playing politics with our safety. Talking tough to our enemies without a Big Stick will show weakness of will and determination to fight.
