Axelrod: 'Politics' sank Obama's Olympics effort

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
10/02/09 12:16 PM EDT

Top White House adviser David Axelrod says "politics" played a key role in the International Olympic Committee's decision to reject President Obama's appeal in support of Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympics.

In an interview moments ago on CNN, Axelrod said, "I don't view this as a repudiation of the president or the first lady. I think that there are politics everywhere, and there were politics inside that room." Axelrod said that a former head of the IOC was leading Madrid's effort for the games, and others involved in other Olympic bids also had connections with the IOC. "As with any process like this, there are all kinds of crosscurrents in the room, there are relationships," Axelrod said.

Asked for details, Axelrod said, "I'm not suggesting anything nefarious…I'm not suggesting anything untoward happened. There are politics around every process, and there were here as well…There were relationships that paid off for some of the other cities."

Axelrod defended Obama's decision to fly to Copenhagen to make the appeal for Chicago. "It was well worth the effort," Axelrod said. "Obviously it was disappointing. The president made, I think, a very strong appeal, and it didn't work out."

I'm sure politics were involved, like gee how many times has the U.S.A. hosted winter and summer games. Maybe it's time some other countries get a chance to lose many at it! It's good to see that Obama's arrogance out shined his charisma.

I thought "racism" was the motivation behind every rejection of all things Obama. Wow, the IOC is racist. I knew it !!!!

For once Axelrod is right. It was all about politics: paying back the fat cats in Chicago who got Obama elected. It was an incredible waste of time and taxpayer money to fly Obama and his wife to Copenhagen to make the case for a bunch of his slum lord friends to profit from having the Olympics in Chicago. The citizens of Chicago dodged a bullet.

Maybe the good members of the IOC just had an overdose of arrogance and self-interest. Chicago style corruption looks a lot like a rusted-out Model T against the sleek, gleaming Bugatti version of preferences that is far better known in Europe. Or, perhaps, it is simply a case of style losing to substance.

President Prompter can't tell you the frakin time of day without a teleprompter. If it were not for the left stream media the guy would not have gotten anywhere near the White House. He and his far left radical administration is a clear and present danger to our country/Constitution.

I would say the IOC saw through the corruption and lack of true Olympic spirit in the Little "O", the Big "O" the "I'm Sacrificing O" and the little Chicago Mob Boss Daley. The IOC is not as dumb as the voters in this country.

Politics? Dang, that's not fair, did they TELL the Obies that "politics" might be involved in this thing? What is Axelrod's alleged field of expertise again? Lame-o! Amateur hour doesn't begin to address the infantile purtrescence parading itself through our highest offices. What a disgrace. Even I am not laughing now. Pathetic. Nauseating. I'm puking.

OMG David Axelrod GROW UP PLEASE! Of course politics played a role. That is what you and your team of disgusting cronies are all about. I am just glad the city will be spared the expense and we taxpayers will not have to be on the hook for all the thug payback. By the way David how did you stand to profit from the Olympics had they come to Chicago? Someone should really do an investigation......too bad the dinosaur media is too busy crying in their beers right now.

IOC members were not swayed by President TelePrompter and his trophy wife? Thank God for common sense!

Can American taxpayers now get reimbursed the $1M expenses for this latest photo-op gone bust? We need it to pay the interest on all the debt accumulated over the past nine months by this failed Administration.

Clearly the IOC is racist.

Too bad ACORN couldn't rig this election for Obeyme like they did the general election here in the US.

I thought all Obama had to do was tell our enemies how much we liked them, tell our allies we are done with them, then the world would love us? Oh well, I'm sure Obeyme is already riding his pegasus back to Olympus, I mean DC.

David Axelrod did everything in his power to convince all parties concerned that sending "The President" in to pitch for Chicago would be a bad move. But Mayor Daley is on the ropes and the Second City Machine Boyz don't take "No" for an answer when their meal tickets are on the line. So now Mr. Axelrod gets to twist in the wind while Mr. Obama smiles, waves, and remains incognizant of the political tsunami that is building, building, building--a wave of human outrage that will sweep many more than Axelrod, Emanuel, Daley, and Obama out into the Sea of Political Oblivion.

It is nice to see that the IOC wasn't going to up staged by the President and his disgruntled wife. After all, she 's not proud of America. The IOC sent a message that the people of Chicago can't seem to understand...Your city is a hell hole. Kids can't even walk home from school without be killed. How would they have provided security for the world athletes. The IOC didn't forget about the Israel athletes.

When will the administration learn to suck it up and not yell "racism" at the drop of a hat? It demeans the president to assume that he can't win or lose based on merit.

Oct 2, 2009

Too many factors at work to blame it simply on politics. The IOC may still be aflame from all the corruption of the Salt Lake City games, and one look at Chicago makes SLC seem like the church choir. And the corruption involved in the entire Obama gang selling their slum property to the IOC for gazillions surely figured into the decision. Finally, Obama gets his wish in that America is no longer seen as a power, able to throw its weight around and influence other nations to accede to its wishes. The irony is delicious.

Jason

Oct 2, 2009

It is a shame that a U.S. city could not get their act together and win an Olympic bid, but who could blame the IOC for seeing all the potential problems that Chicago will face in the next decade, at the least, and want to avoid them like the plague. What is so amazing about this whole thing is that the first time the POTUS goes to beg for the games, we get shot down in the first round. That is what is embarassing about this whole thing.

LAUGHABLE. Chicago politicians got punked by Chicago style politics. Axlrod is a whiner. All the cronyism in this administration and he complains that.... "As with any process like this, there are all kinds of crosscurrents in the room, there are relationships,"

"The whole world is watching".

You know, Axie... you're half way there. All you needed to say to compete the voyage is: "And had we won the bid, Chicago politics would have played the larger part in that victory". And what is the politics that could have won it for Chicago? Did Bernardine threaten to place a bomb at the IOC? Was ACORN to have been given scalper's rights at all the events, with kickbacks galore to the IOC?

And the SACRIFICE. Oh, that's rich. But then there are good things to find in sacrifice if one looks, like Paris shopping trips. Michele will probably turn that into a tax writeoff by trying to find a designer/manufacturer to copy and market the abominable snowman's suit she wore at the Inaugural ball... the one that looked like she wore it to a cotton ball shootout beforehand.

It did not take the WH a half a day to put the blame on politics. If politics are to blame than it is because of the WH and their political views. The choice was made for Rio because South America has never been picked to host. I think this was a very selfish remark on Axelro's part. The truth is they where counting on this bid to be able to pay back and line all the pockets of their rich peeps in Chicago that bundled millions of dollars into Obama's election coffer. Oops! What's you going to do with the Mob comes for you! I LOVE IT!

to Rosie, getting or not getting the Olympics is NOT A BIG DEAL. The President of the USA going to pitch for it is what created all the attention.

Oct 2, 2009

Yes, politics were involved.

As an operating chief executive, he can no longer be all things to all people and keep his substantive agenda cloaked in rhetoric.

Now that he is showing his true colors, Obama is proving to be singularly bad at politics, at home and (perhaps particularly) abroad.

His tomfoolery and embarrassing missteps on the world stage helped make the international community's rejection of Obama's bid for the Olympics inevitable.

Musicman

Oct 2, 2009

It seems that nothing is his fault. I'm surprised they didn't try to blame Bush or the right wingers as they usually do. The issue here is how Obama misplaces his Presidential Priorities. He should be in the nations WH dealing with bigger issues than running off for an Olympic event scheduled years from now. It was just a Junket tour by Oprah, and the Obama's at the taxpayers expense, to benifit his Chicago Politicians who got him in office. Great job so far Obama. I can't wait for re-election time.

joey123

Oct 2, 2009

This was the first contest Obama has been involved in where he couldn't disqualify the opponents, get their sealed court records made public, or engage the services of ACORN and SEIU. The results speak for themselves.

KarenC

Oct 2, 2009

Obama has let it be known all around the world in every speech he gives that the USA is to blame for all the ills of the world. Then Michelle tells a personal story about her father. What the heck does her personal life have to do with the Olympics? With the Obamas it is always Me, Me, Me, I, I, I, My, My, My. Well the rest of the world hasn't drank the Obama Koolaid like many in the USA have. The Committee was not impressed with Barack Hussein Obama umm umm ummm or his wife. So now all of Obama's buddies in Chicago who owned the slums where the construction of the venues and Olympic Village were to be built won't be collecting those millions of dollars they had planned on collecting when they sold the land! Chicago you dodged a huge bullet, be thankful!

Larry Love

Oct 2, 2009

I think a lot of people are unfairly capitalizing on this to take more potshots at the President. Also we are looking like a bunch of sore losers in the process. We lost, and no it does not reflect poorly on the president. I didn't know Obama was the sole engineer and administrator of the Olympic bid. This country is reaching scary heights with the partisan politics. Maybe this presidency will finally open the path for a third party to emerge. Maybe...

The IOC is very political--always has been. No news there. I wonder if officials lead Obama to believe Chicago had it in the bag. I don't think he would have gone if they thought there was a chance of losing in the very first round. Good on Rio, though. I was pulling for them.
