Boehner: The 'Defund ACORN Act' will be introduced today

By: Byron York

House Republican leader has just sent a letter to his fellow lawmakers asking them to become co-sponsors of the "Defund ACORN Act," which Republicans plan to introduce in the House today. In the letter, Boehner, citing undercover video reports of ACORN workers encouraging illegal activity, says, "It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law." Boehner says "immediate action" should be taken to cut off federal funds to the organization. "Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers’ money," the letter says.

Here is the entire text of Boehner's "Dear Colleague" letter:

In the wake of new reports of potentially criminal activity involving associates of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), it is time for Congress to take action and terminate all federal funding to ACORN and its affiliates. That is why I will introduce the Defund ACORN Act and encourage you to become a cosponsor.

It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law. Immediate action is necessary to ensure that no additional tax dollars are directed to ACORN. Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers’ money.

Congressional pressure, coupled with the impact of recent media reports, prompted the U.S. Census Bureau on September 11 to end its partnership with ACORN. I support this decision by the Census Bureau, and believe it is vital that all other federal agencies with ties to ACORN follow the Census Bureau’s example by severing all ties to ACORN and its affiliates, whether those ties consist of partnerships or the awarding of federal funds, including federal funds distributed through state and local governments from federal block grants. But rather than wait for the other agencies to act, Congress must take control of this situation and change federal law now.

This is a matter of common sense and respect for taxpayer dollars. Last year, millions of Americans were outraged to learn their tax dollars were being used to subsidize an organization linked to multiple instances of voter registration fraud and other illicit activity. An analysis of federal data by my staff determined that ACORN has received more than $53 million in direct funding from the federal government since 1994, and has likely received substantially more indirectly through states and localities that receive federal block grants.

We can stop this waste of taxpayer dollars by passing the Defund ACORN Act. If you would like to become a cosponsor of this legislation or need additional information, please have your staff contact [my office].

UPDATE: Boehner writes president; says ACORN funding must be "terminated immediately"

Here is the text of Boehner's letter, sent today to President Obama:

Dear Mr. President:

We write to you today in the wake of new reports of potentially criminal activity involving associates of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to respectfully request that you use your authority to publicly disclose and terminate all federal funding to ACORN and its affiliates.

We support this decision by the Census Bureau, and believe it is vital that all other federal agencies with ties to ACORN follow the Census Bureau’s example by severing all ties to ACORN and its affiliates, whether those ties consist of partnerships or the awarding of federal funds, including federal funds distributed through state and local governments from federal block grants.

This is a matter of common sense and respect for taxpayer dollars. Last year, millions of Americans were outraged to learn their tax dollars were being used to subsidize an organization linked to multiple instances of voter registration fraud and other illicit activity. An analysis of federal data by the Office of the Republican Leader determined that ACORN has received more than $53 million in direct funding from the federal government since 1994, and has likely received substantially more indirectly through states and localities that receive federal block grants.

The Census Bureau has made the commendable decision to sever ties with ACORN, and it is now critical that all remaining federal entities with ties to ACORN do the same. We ask that you use your authority to ensure that all federal funding of ACORN is publicly disclosed and terminated immediately. To facilitate this effort, the Republican staff of the Oversight Committee has compiled a complete list of the corporations that form the ACORN Council, and we would be pleased to share it with you and members of your administration.

We thank you for your attention to this request.

It never fails, just when I give up on Washington, they go and do something right. ACORN is just "Slip-N-Fall" school in a store front. Should they be funded with tax payer dollars? Of course not. It's nice to see a hint of sanity under the big top.

It's about d*&^%$ time! This group is nothing but a bunch of thieves. They've been stealing votes and taxpayer dollars for years. Obama won't step in, though. He still owes them for his "stunning" victory in 2008.

It's about time. It is unfathomable that this corrupt organization receives tax dollars (money that was forcibly taken from those who earned it).

Thank you Mr Boehner for leading the charge & the otehrs who voted not to fund ACORN! It's sick & disturbing that an organization "posing" to help low-income & minority groups are cheating & scamming & don't blink an eye about child prostitution! We have many Americans that struggle work hard & save to buy a home the "right" way! To have so far 3 DIFFERENT locations in 3 States with the same results, I can't help but think this is standard operating procedure when it comes to prostitution or tax evasion & ACORN should be investigated from top to bottom!

ACORN should have been defunded before now! This is an agregious organization with a criminal historicity that has long since provided more benefit than it garners. Thank you so much Rep. Boehner for the introduction of this bill. Those who oppose this move are those who have benefitted - or hope to benefit by ACORN's partisan criminal activity.

Sir,
Well done! The real punch to your legislation comes when the vote is taken. If, as in the Sunstein vote in the Senate, all GOPers vote to defund ACORN, but the bill goes down on a party line vote, the Socialocrats have given conservatives a very powerful weapon.
Ave atque Vale,
Chuck

About time... would think that the next step would be an independent investigation. If we can spend time and money re-investigating the CIA, we certainly can take some time to independently research ACORN who has been shown to be corrupt over many years! Excellent! Thank you Rep Boehner for your representation of us all, regardless the state..

I never had ANY intention of dealing with them in the first place! I don't know Who they are, or where they came from, or what thier purpose is, except for now...the purpose is to give the "dead wood" stuff from the taxpayers pockets regardless of what it is they ask for legal or not!!!!!
And THEY were going to ring MY doorbell asking ME personal and finacial information??? The FBI needs to get on board with this WHOLE mess.

Look for the roaches to scatter when the lights of truth are turned on.
I understand that Obama's Campaign gave Acorn $800,000 to help get out the vote. That should really tick Hillary off.

Stop it! STOP IT! STOP IT! NOW! We are tired of this. NO MORE!!!! We want our money back. EVERY LAST PENNY! Put all of acorn and Geo Soros in jail. Maybe we need to have a new election NOW! Thank you MR Boehner for standing up for us. Now the other Republicans need to get some guts and stand up for what is right. And obama IS a liar. I can't stand Hilary, But she would be better than this nut. Please stop him from becoming a dictator in our country. He (obama) quacks like a duck and associates with other ducks (castro, chavez, etc. The only racist I see is jimmy carter and he is anti-semitic. I have seen more talk about race coming from pelosi, reed and carter than all the town hall and tea parties.

Thank you Mr. Boehner! Now, how about some "reparations" for the tax payers that were scammed by yet another beauracrat bungle. Can you please do something to investigate the SEIU as well? How about the Rathkie twins, Wade CEO of ACORN and brother Dale ( Dale was bailed out by Soros, to the tune of ! million dollars, to make his embesellment charges at ACORN go away, Why), Jeff Jones, APOLLO founder & WeatherUnderground and SDS guy, The APPOLLO ALLIANCE (funded through the TIDES foundation and Geoge Soros) who wrote our stimulus bill.
Then can you look at the connection between Bill Ayres and Jeff Jones? Valerie Jarrett and Bill Aryes' Mom and Dad were in business together. Jones and Jarrett were lifelong pals. Isn't she the major one that pushed Van as green csar job? Coward and Piven ideals are alive and well. "Overwelm the system, get everyone on welfare and change the country by Marxist Revolution" We are there, Sir. Stand Up, Help your Country, Do the Right Thing!!

ACORN is a National Embarrassment just like the President they got elected and all his CZARS! The Republicans are not the only ones that feel this way....I've never been a Republican. What has our country become when we criticize Corporate America for over spending....and as a nation we go whole hog more than they ever thought about in the same direction?

How can we expect the average citizen to pay taxes and prosecute those not in compliance when people in top government spots fail to pay or reveal assets?

How can EEO Laws be properly enforced for the regular citizen when elected officials use race as the blame for being criticized for their over spending, special interest groups, failure to follow our Constitution, giving power positions without any type of confirmation? Need I say more?

I applaud you standing up for the people. It is outrageous that this organization has been leaching off of us all this time, and using our hard earned money for criminal activity.

SEIU is another one that needs to be be swept way.

Lets kick these bums to the curb!!!

I've been a registered Dem. for over 30 years and warned all friends not to vote for the Democorrupt Party anymore! Democorrupts believe in taxes, more taxes and all the taxes they can pass as well as all the power they can grab. ACORN is an arm of the Democorrupt Party. Run, don't walk to the polls in Nov. 2010 and vote ALL DEMOCRATS OUT THAT YOU CAN! Competition between Republicans and Independent/Libertarian candidates will either correct the corruption in Dem. Party or it needs to slither under a rock and stay there!
