Democrats fear getting "BTU'd" on energy again

Democrats seem to have struck a deal on a massive energy and global warming bill, but some in the party are worried their politically risky vote in favor of the measure will be for nothing because once it hits the Senate, where opposition from every Republican and many centrist Democrats make passage, or even consideration, unlikely.
For some House Democrats, the situation is reminiscent of at 1993, when Democrats passed a bill, pushed by then-Vice President Al Gore, that would have taxed the amount of energy used by measuring British Thermal Units, or BTUs.
Many House Democrats at the time went out on a political limb to support the bill, which was pushed by then-Vice President Al Gore.
It passed by just three votes by the Democratically led Congress, only to die in the Senate, where Democrats there refused to even vote on it.
The bill that Democrats plan to vote on as early as Friday appears headed for a similar fate.
"That is the fear of most House members," said Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, who is planning to vote on the bill. "No one wants to get BTU'd.  A lot of members took a lot of heat back home over that bill."
The Senate is working on separate energy and climate bills that have little in common with the House version, which would put in place caps on pollution and require costly permits for those who pollute beyond the cap. It's a politically excruciating vote for many members, particularly those from rural and farm belt districts that could face higher electricity costs and job loss.
The Senate, on the other hand, passed an energy bill in committee last week that would open up more of the Gulf coast to drilling.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will not commit to considering the House bill, saying he wants to see if the House is able to pass it first.

You democrats better beware! Your votes will be recorded and used against you in the midterms and in 2012. We recognize this pig for what it is, a monster of a tax that will live forever. You will NEVER be able to run from your vote on this bill.

Global Warming is caused by solar cycles. It has slowed or stopped altogether for now. Who knows it may start cooling now. Whatever the case. We can't control it and this bill will cause millions in the third world to starve because of the damage it will cause to the world economy. CHILDREN WILL DIE IF THIS BILL PASSES!!!

What really disturbs me about the current Congress are the draconian Pelosi Muzzle Rules that completely shut the Republican minority out of all debate and eliminate the traditional role of the minority to present substitutes or amendments. You would think that Madame Piglooser would be secure enough in her overwhelming majority to show the same magnanimity to the minority that the Republicans showed to the Dems when the tables were turned, but she is so insecure of her own caucus following her in lock step that she has to ensure that no one votes against her by joining with the minority voices. It has burned me up in the past that the Republicans have given so much leeway to the minority when we are in charge, but frankly, after seeing this dictatorship in the House, I hope and pray that we NEVER stoop as low as this current Congress. At least Republicans can respect the constitutional role of the minority in the House.

I think it would definitely pass in the house but die in the senate. Really the entire measure is just a feel-good exercise. There is no data that the Waxman-Markey bill would actually have any effect on the global warming phenomenon.
