Democrats flummoxed by health care protests

This morning we were treated to a smug USA Today opinion article by Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer. “Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American,” they write. Actually, drowning out a speaker—by the boos some Democratic members of Congress have been greeted with or by the loud cheering that greeted Barack Obama so often during the 2008 campaign season—is not un-American or illegitimate. Preventing someone from speaking altogether—drowning them out permanently—is rude, boorish and often self-defeating; but not un-American. But the more interesting part of the article is not the headline quote, but the oozing condescension toward so many American voters toward the bill Pelosi and Hoyer assert the House “will” pass in September. “Health care is complex.”

To paraphrase another common saying: It’s a complex thing; you wouldn’t understand. You should listen docilely and take instruction from your betters. Or as Senator Clair McCaskill said at the beginning of a town hall meeting in Poplar Bluff, Missouri today (I was listening to the audio while preparing to appear on Fox News, asking members of the audience, “How many of you are so angry you can’t think straight?” The condescending implication is that if you could think straight, you’d support my position. Or recall what Barack Obama said campaigning in Virginia August 6: “I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them just to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess.”

As Ring Lardner once wrote, describing a flummoxed father. “’Shut up,’ he explained.”

What should we think of the negative responses to the Democrats at town hall meetings? I’m linking to video with hat tips to some of my favorite blogs here, here, here, here, here, herehere, here, here, here, here and here.

The only violence that I have heard of was in St. Louis where an SEIU union thug beat a black conservative who was handing out “don’t tread on me” flags. Here’s video of a tea party protest of the SEIU violence and here’s more on SEIU tactics.

You can take a look and judge for yourselves. My tentative conclusions: The Democrats’ health care bills have stirred widespread and deeply felt opposition. While some of the protests are organized, the turnout and strong feeling expressed indicate that we are watching something that is largely spontaneous. Try organizing such a protest when almost no one cares much about your issue: no one will show up. It’s the supporters of the Democrats’ health care bills, not their opponents, who are astroturfing—and spending plenty of moolah on television ads and the like.

The Democrats are spoiled because they are used to a mainstream media who spin things their way and a general public whose only expressions of spontaneous enthusiasm in 2006-08 were opposition to (if not hatred of) George W. Bush and support of Barack Obama and other Democratic candidates. Now the spontaneous enthusiasm is all on the other side, with the Democratic astroturf efforts producing pathetic turnouts and largely spontaneous opposition to the Democratic health care plans producing large turnouts.

By the way, aren’t you not supposed to call your political opponents unpatriotic? Or un-American?

Nancy Pelosi is the poster girl of obfuscation and lies. She has absolutely no credibility! Oh, I am sorry, she does have a24% or so favorability rating.

Correction to an earlier post: Pelosi has a 14% approval rating. Pathetic!

OF the thousands and thousands of programs administered by the US Federal Government, can anyone name ONE that is so well-managed and so fiscally responsive to the American taxpayer that its just breaking even and not losing millions and millions of tax dollars?

What ever happened to good journalism? Barone, your 'paraphrase' is simply 'making up stuff' that was not said, and attempting to link it to a person who has nothing to do with it. You 'only heard' of violence in St. Louis, guess you missed Tampa. Screaming tantrums and screechy hissy fits attempting to drown everyone else out are not American democracy but plain thuggery. Lies like Palin's 'death panel' fabrication are inciting people to hysteria and violence.

Bottom line: HB 3200 is not the answer. Instead of pointing fingers and blaming one party or another, congress needs to go back to the drawing board and work out a real solution. Probably won't happen if left to dems or the GOP - they're at the mercy of lobby groups. Time for independent representation.

Excellent article.

Looking at these protestors I see the type of person that pays the governments bills. Unusal for a protestor, as they are usually the dim-witted liberal type.

Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd, etc. are elitists which America shuns. I don't care if one is Dem. or Rep., they won't listen!

They want boot-lickers.

Why are people shouting at the meetings? Because the elitists haven't listened to "We the People" for years and years...they feel if they do not shout these career politicians won't listen.

The Progressives of the Dem. Party are ruining the Party!

So Dan, the only "good journalism" must be when it comes from the lap dog, boot licking media. And the only time it's "thuggery", "hysteria", and "screechy hissy fits" is when its a conservative group doing these things. The left does this all the time, and when its finally done by conservatives its called unAmerican. Go figure. :)

The anger is real. What the democrats tried to do was to force through the legislation before the recess and before the legislation could be reviewed or commented upon. What is now happeing is that people effected by the health care legislation are finally able to directly speak to elected officials to say "I don't like the way this is being shoved down our throats". The anger is very real.

Patriotic is considered un-American to Democrats. So calling someone unpatriotic would be a compliment. They use "flag waving" as an elitist put down.

Dan said:
"Screaming tantrums and screechy hissy fits attempting to drown everyone else out are not American democracy but plain thuggery."

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that this applies to both sides - as the left uses this tactic much more readily than conservatives.

I have not viewed all of the videos, but I have seen several. What strikes me is that in most cases, the audience has been listening attentively, gave the speaker (e.g. Specter) a chance to have his say, but objected when the dissembling and obfuscation, very thinly veiled, began. If these august representatives would pay their constituents enough respect to be forthright to begin with, and give an indication that the audience would get their opportunity to speak up, it would not surprise me but that the 'thuggery' never took place.

I showed up an hour early for the Carnahan townhall (Missouri) and could not get a parking place. I drove down neighborhood streets in search of parking, and found the streets were lined with cars - as far as 9 or 10 blocks away. People were walking out of their houses with homeade signs. This was no Republican rent-a-mob.

Of course, I only went because I'm a racist, redneck, swastika-toting mobster.

JanaBrad

Aug 11, 2009

After the Carnahan event, Rep. Carnahan did an interview with local CBS affiliate. The reporter asked if HR 3200 would allow abortions at taxpayer expense. Carnahan would not answer the question directly. He said, "This bill is not about abortions." The reporter asked him again, and his answer was another non-answer.

I happen to be pro-choice myself (with some restrictions), but I thought it was interesting that the Rep. would not answer the question directly. It made me wonder what else is in this bill that our elected leaders don't want to talk about?

I haven't read the bill. It's written in legalese. I wouldn't understand it if I read it. For all I know, abortions might not be covered. It just makes me stop and think when a politician avoids a direct answer to a question.

He could have said simply yes or no. The question wasn't that difficult.

Is Pelosi an American? Never a question I had. With her makeup spayed on I have always wondered if she were a Terrestrial.

Interesting that "dissent" is now un-American. If there had been no dissent in 1776, we'd all be speaking with British accents.

peterike

Aug 11, 2009

For decades the Left has shouted down Conservative speakers on college campuses, even physically going after them. Not a word of concern. CodePink and other idiots routinely interrupted speeches by President Bush. Back then, dissent was the highest form of patriotism. Now it's "un American." What vile worms these Democrats are.

Bottom line: "Speaking truth to power" now means criticizing liberals.
They sure don't seem to like it, though.

Mark Buehner

Aug 11, 2009

You do have to watch these videos in context. These are not discussions of town halls to begin with- they are lectures punctuated with answering specific questions with talking points. The anger arises from condescension. The interruptions arise from obfuscation.

Pelosi in July: "I always call Washington the city of the perishable. When you've got the votes, you take the vote," she said, punching her left hand hard with her right. "Because if you think you're going to wait around until you get more of this or that -- you just never know what happens."*

Pelosi now: "Health care is complex. It touches every American life. It drives our economy. People must be allowed to learn the facts."

I have noted something that anyone who has read any of these events must see...

The plan Obama is defending and pushing is not the same as any plan actually on paper in Congress

Think about that... ObamaCare will not have waiting lines, rationing, greater costs and will not add to the deficit yet every single plan written in the House and Senate does...all 5 of them

There is a major disconnect between what TAO sees as the plan and what Congress has actually put together...perhaps Obama needs to talk to his bill writers. It is why so very many can wave actual bills in his face and yell 'lie' when he says things that just are not so...

24AheadDotCom

Aug 11, 2009

Because the leaders of the opposition to BHO are almost all incompetent, the protests have become the story more so than the underlying issue supposedly being protested. If those leaders weren't helping us slide into Idiocracy, they'd encourage real debate by promoting this plan:

http://24ahead.com/s/question-authority

Instead, they're simply encouraging people to go out and rant and rave and in some cases act like baboons.

Fatty Bolger

Aug 11, 2009

Sorry, I hit post too soon. The point is, if things had gone according to Pelosi's and Obama's plan, a monstrous healthcare bill would be passed and signed into law already. It would be a done deal. Oh, but now it's "complex" and people need to "learn the facts." The hypocrisy here is simply stunning. I thought that the Democrats were the anti-hypocrisy party? Or does that only apply to Republican sexual affairs?

Brian King

Another gov't agency (The FDA) takes YEARS to approve a single drug which can potentially affect only a small portion of our society. Another gov't agency (The President) is trying to change the entire healthcare system, affecting everyone, in a matter of weeks. I don't care which party supports or doesn't support this - common sense says we need more time to think this through. Pelosi just looks dumb trying to cram this pill down our throats.

Aug 11, 2009

So, Dan the troll says "You 'only heard' of violence in St. Louis.." No Dan, we saw the YouTube posting that SHOWED the violence by the SEIU thugs; it's right there caught on video. Of course, to "community organizer" types (and their enablers, such as Dan), nothing they do is ever "violence," because they do it all for our own, common good. Simple, right?

Democrats are generally flummoxed by economics, basic civics, and the rest of the adult world.

RHO1953

Aug 11, 2009

The foundation of the modern democrat party is firmly rooted in fascism with alarming similarities to the National Socialist movement of Germany, otherwise known as Nazi's. They attempted to hide this for decades, running hard from the liberal or socialist label. They became arrogant and too sure of themselves after the election, thinking their mandate was for those things. The left wing media even proclaimed "we're all socialists now". The people who decided the election, the millions in the middle who are subject to influence and available to vote for either party did not see this coming. They are astounded to find out that Obama is exactly what we conservatives warned, a Marxist. His poll numbers are plummeting and so are the democrat senators and congressmen who are pushing his agenda. It's really amazing that he fooled so many people when it was so obvious what he was about.

Aug 12, 2009

Note to 24AheadDotCom: You are so wrong. Those "leaders of the opposition" are by no means incompetent. They are angry, to be sure. That anger stems from our elected officials not LISTENING to the people who put them in office. Yeah, some of these meetings could be calmer, but people are just plain fed up. As one town haller pointed out: It took the prez 6 months to pick out a DOG but this has to pass IMMEDIATELY. And with 5 different versions of the same bill floating around, who really knows WHAT's in there??

The references I find in the Bible about helping the poor refer to the "orphan and the widow" within the community who could not, in those days, help themselves. You people who are so intent on open borders (Tell me again, how many of the 6.2 BILLION in the world do you want us to support in this country ?)need to write Sr.El Presidente de Mexico and tell him to use some of that oil money, Am. aid, drug money, etc. to provide schools, jobs, and health care for his people. I refuse to take on his responsibility. You open-border types feel so righteous about helping others, but I'd be willing to bet you have some problems in your personal relationships, which you can't handle - so, you "relate" to those far afield; it's so much easier.
