From the people who brought us the swine flu vaccine shortage - Government-run health care! UPDATED

President Obama's late-night declaration of a nationwide public health emergency last night shouldn't be allowed to obscure the most important lesson of the developing swine flu crisis - The same government that only weeks ago promised abundant supplies of swine flu vaccine by mid-October will be running your health care system under Obamacare.

On Sept. 13, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, told ABC's This Week program that the government was on schedule to deliver an "ample supply" of swine flu vaccine by mid-October:

"We're on track to have an ample supply rolling by the middle of October. But we may have some early vaccine as early as the first full week in October. We'll get the vaccine out the door as fast as it rolls off the production line."

But here we are five weeks later and news reports are coming in from across the nation of long waiting lines of people wanting the shot, but being turned away because of grossly inadequate supplies. The typical explanation from public health offiials is that the swine flu vaccine requires more time to be cultivated than seasonal flu vaccine.

That's no doubt true, but did federal public health officials just discover that fact? These are the same government officials who will be in charge of your health care under the government-run health care system being sought by Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress.

And the president's declaration contains this statement that is rich with irony in the context of the debate on health care reform:  "The foundation of our national approach to the H1N1 flu has been preparedness at all levels -- personal, business, and government -- and this proclamation helps that effort by advancing our overall response capability," according to Fox News.

The declaration will allow waiving of federal regulations on a case-by-case basis. But how will we waive an entire government-run health care system?

Here's something else to think about: How will Obama and congressional Democrats seek to take advantage of this public health crisis? This is, after all, the administration that never lets a good crisis go to waste, right?

UPDATE: H.L. Mencken would understand instantly

Ralph Benko reminds us of these words of wisdom from the old Baltimore curmudgeon: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

UPDATE II: Vaccination line Hell

Theblogprof reports from Oakland County, Michigan, where the vaccination wait was 5-7 hours. Don't miss the video. As theblogprof notes: This is "a prelude to what will happen under Obamacare."

UPDATE III: Simmons says not so fast

Chuck Simmons, the Rochester Infectious Disease Examiner and a blogger whose opinion I greatly respect, thinks criticism of the government for not getting sufficient supplies of the swine flu vaccine distributed is unfair. He also addresses worries about the content of the vaccine.

Be careful Mark, you could be tagged an enemy of the administration by pointing out their shortcomings. Looking good seems to be better than delivering on promises.

H1N1? Before Rahm put into currency the phrase "Never let a good crisis go to waste" H.L. Mencken summed it up in typical acerbic fashion:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

Of course could be he means Tapscott.

Wish the POTUS would show the courage to emerge from behind glittering generalities. America wants to Know!

Don't forget. This POTUS also reminded us of how well government runs things by pointing out continual problems with the Postal Service operations. My conclusion? The inmates have taken over the institution. Heaven help us.

its time for america to demand obama resign from office, under the constitution we do have the right to remove a president who is a danger to america and its security, mr obama needs to be impeached for constantly using threats to take away americans freedoms, the truth will come out soon about obamas true intentions,

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and even the County Health Office has criticized how this vaccine was distributed. How inept are these people. Of course, if this were W. it would be a conspiracy.

In my area, we don't even have the seasonal flu vaccines!
The only place I have heard this is the Lou Dobbs show...only one vaccine producer is in the USA, and it is a foreign owned company.

The rest are in China!

Now you know why we do not have vaccines!

We no longer are able to produce our own, as well as the simple masks many are using in other countries...they too are made elsewhere!

Hey, go to the mall and see how well you can find clothing and shoes from the US!

If foreign countries ever want to get back at the USA, all they have to do is with hold needed medicines and supplies!

And how did FOX get this quote? Because they're obviously not a "news" organization, right?

You may recall Kerry making flu vaccine shortage a campaign issue in 2004 - Bush to blame of course

I was thinking the exact same thing! These are the people who want to be in charge of healthcare and they couldn't even deliver the vaccines to their own flu creation? They just want to keep people in panic mode.

Of course they can't deliver vaccines, the cretins have driven vaccine producers away. "Big Pharmacutical" is a villian, doncha know.

THE HOCUS POTUS, will find a way to blame President Bush. Why isn't seasonal flu (36K dead p/yr) an emergency ? Could be that seasonal deaths are mostly "old" people ? The government saves much $$$ when the older population die.

This is what is overlooked, straight from the CDC website;
"The typical incubation period for influenza is 1—4 days (average: 2 days). Adults shed influenza virus from the day before symptoms begin through 5—10 days after illness onset. However, the amount of virus shed, and presumably infectivity, decreases rapidly by 3—5 days after onset in an experimental human infection model. Young children also might shed virus several days before illness onset, and children can be infectious for 10 or more days after onset of symptoms. Severely immunocompromised persons can shed virus for weeks or months".

People actually want the flu shot? Why? Do you even understand that is does NOT guarantee you that you will NOT get the flu (either from the shot or from exposure)?

It is junk science since there is NO proven record of success. Everyone that gets the shot and does NOT get sick may say something about their natural defenses against invaders more than anything.

The flu shot is only good for about 33% as claimed by the gov stats, and I would say that is high.

Go on, line up and demand it--the reverse psychology of the gov is just another tactic that works wonders... just as so many other tactics.

My 4 year old got swine flu-- she had a fever and a cough for three days and then she was better. You don't need the vaccine--- it's a total scam to let the government inject something to you that just got out of human trials 30 days ago. The makers of the vaccine were given blanket immunity from the government for lawsuits. The vaccine contains squaline which attacks lining of your nerves as a foreign body. This is what Gulf War Syndrome was-- the anti-anthrax vaccine give to soldiers contained squaline.

Obama and the CDC are late to act again. How many more will needlessly die? Two weeks ago both my kids cough the swine flu. The five year old was hospitalized for 5 days as a result of complication from the Swine flu. It would have been nice if the vaccine was available rather than tied up in the pipeline due to the FEDs unable to do anything quickly.

re: The same ... will be running your health care system under Obamacare.

They will be running the insurance aspect of it. Not health care itself.

Public option a.k.a. Universal Health care. Have you heard... they want to change the name again....
