Furor grows over partisan car dealer closings

Evidence appears to be mounting that the Obama administration has systematically targeted for closing Chrysler dealers who contributed to Repubicans. What started earlier this week as mainly a rumbling on the Right side of the Blogosphere has gathered some steam today with revelations that among the dealers being shut down are a GOP congressman and closing of competitors to a dealership chain partly owned by former Clinton White House chief of staff Mack McLarty.

The basic issue raised here is this: How do we account for the fact millions of dollars were contributed to GOP candidates by Chrysler who are being closed by the government, but only one has been found so far that is being closed that contributed to the Obama campaign in 2008?

Florida Rep. Vern Buchanan learned from a House colleague that his Venice, Florida, dealership is on the hit list. Buchanan also has a Nissan franchise paired with the Chrysler facility in Venice.

"It's an outrage. It's not about me. I'm going to be fine," said Buchanan, the dealership's majority owner. "You're talking over 100,000 jobs. We're supposed to be in the business of creating jobs, not killing jobs," Buchanan told News 10, a local Florida television station.

Buchanan, who succeeded former Rep. Katharine Harris in 2006, reportedly learned of his dealership's termination from Rep.Candace Miller, R-MI. Buchanan owns a total of 23 dealerships in Florida and North Carolina.

Also fueling the controversy is the fact the RLJ-McCarty-Landers chain of Arkansas and Missouri dealerships aren't being closed, but many of their local competitors are being eliminated. Go here for a detailed look at this situation. McClarty is the former Clinton senior aide. The "J" is Robert Johnson, founder of the Black Entertainment Television, a heavy Democratic contributor.

A lawyer representing a group of  Chrysler dealers who are on the hit list deposed senior Chrysler executives and later told Reuters that he believes the closings have been forced on the company by the White House.

"It became clear to us that Chrysler does not see the wisdom of terminating 25 percent of its dealers. It really wasn't Chrysler's decision. They are under enormous pressure from the President's automotive task force," said attorney Leonard Bellavia.

RedState.com's Josh Painter has a useful roundup of what has been found so far by a growing number of bloggers digging into what could be a very big story indeed. Also, see my column on this issue and how it fits into the larger context dubbed by the Examiner's Michael Barone as "gangster government."

As part of Chrysler's bankruptcy agreement with the White House, the company plans to close roughly a quarter of its 3,200 dealerships.  Lists of the dealerships being cut and those retaining their Chrysler franchises can be found here in pdf format. Many dealers contend the criteria being used to determine which dealerships survive is not clear and that many of those that are being closed in fact are profitable businesses, despite the current recession.

UPDATE: Auto Prophet says wait just a minute

The Auto Prophet - an anonymous engineer working for one of the Detroit automakers - is skeptical of the suggestion that political considerations are playing a role in White House car czar decisions on which Chrysler dealers are to be shuttered.

A more likely explanation is simply the fact that more Chrysler dealers in general are likely to be Republican contributors, which would mean more of the closed dealers would be seen to be GOP supporters than Democrat supporters: "My hypothesis is that Chrysler dealers, being small businessmen, are more likely to donate to Republicans than Democrats, for predictable reasons. Like any small businessmen, car dealers want lower taxes, a lower minimum wage, fewer regulations, etc."

I have been reading The Auto Prophet for years and consider him to be among the most credible of bloggers on automotive issues. On this issue, I agree with him to the extent that a definitive, statistical analysis-driven conclusion is not possible until all contributions by all Chrysler dealers is completed.

But two points should be noted here. First, even if we accept the proposition that most car dealers are more likely to be Republican than Democratic donors, there would still be a "disparate impact" from closings on one class of dealers, compared to the other. When the federal courts see a disparate impact on racial groups, the policy or action in question is typically held to be inappropriate.

Race and car dealer closings, of course, aren't analogous. But the lesson remains that when government makes economic decisions that ought to be left to the private market, it is impossible to avoid disparate impacts. And there is always the question of would the Obama White House be so quick to close hundreds of dealerships if the owners of those dealerships were predominantly Democratic donors?

Second, since neither Chrysler, nor the White House have made public the criteria used to select dealers for elimination - and because a significant number of those being closed were profitable - the only way to resolve the inevitable controversy about political considerations in political decisions is to make the criteria public and allow independent outside observers to assess how those criteria were applied.

I'm not holding my breath on the likelihood of that happening any time soon.

UPDATE II: White House car czar married to Democratic fund raiser

Maybe it's significant, maybe not, but a colleague here in the Examiner newsroom just reminded me that White House car czar Steven Rattner is married to Maureen White, the former national finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee. And let's not forget that before Rattner became a Wall Street mover and shaker, he was a New York Times reporter. Check out the Wiki bio here.

UPDATE III: And if most Chrysler dealers are Republicans, what then?

Excellent post up by Nate Silver on Huffpo making the argument that nobody should be surprised that lots of the Chrysler dealers getting the axe are GOP contributors because car dealers as a group are overwhelmingly Republican. Says Silver:

"It shouldn't be any surprise, by the way, that car dealers tend to vote -- and donate -- Republican. They are usually male, they are usually older (you don't own an auto dealership in your 20s), and they have obvious reasons to be pro-business, pro-tax cut, anti-green energy and anti-labor. Car dealerships need quite a bit of space and will tend to be located in suburban or rural areas. I can't think of too many other occupations that are more natural fits for the Republican Party. Unfortunately, while we are still a nation of drivers, we are not a nation of dealers."

That's true, of course, but I'm not sure that it ends the discussion. In fact, it may even make the discussion of possible partisan considerations behind the closings even more relevant.  Think of it this way: If 88 percent of all car dealers were Democratic contributors, rather than GOPers, how likely is it that the Obama folks would be delivering such an egregious economic blow to the group, a blow that put thousands of people out of work and deprives hundreds of Democratic donors of their means of making contributions?

More likely, the Obama White House would be doing everything possible to avoid closing Chrysler dealerships, especially since the argument for closure has nothing to do with whether any particular dealership is profitable, but whether it is one more than somebody thinks Chrysler or GM should have in order to spread sales like Toyota does it.

If you think I am kidding, let's do a quick review of recent automotive industry history. People in Detroit, the automotive media - and on Wall Street where White House car czar Steve Rattner made his fortune - have been debating for years about the Big Three's need to reduce their dealership count in order to become more like Toyota.

Remember in the late 1970s when Chysler almost went bankrupt the first time? And did you know all that kept Ford afloat in 1980 was its foreign sales? But despite those jolts, Detroit still didn't resolve the issues presented by serious foreign competition.

Instead of directly confronting the main source of their problem - over-priced labor that put the Big Three at a major disadvantage on costs - Big Three executives tried other approaches to manage what was sometimes called the "over-capacity problem."

Too many dealerships was only a minor part of the over-capacity problem, which at its most fundamental level consisted of having  too many factories making far more vehicles than consumers wanted to buy. The ideas was that if they cut back production capacity to match sales, everything would be fine.

That thinking obscured the fundamental problem - too few sales of vehicles that were too costly to build and that increasingly consumers rejected. Detroit has still not solved this problem, although GM got it half right in the last decade by revamping its product line and substantially upgrading its assembly and reliability scores. But GM still hasn't been able to penetrate the UAW's lock on production costs. Ditto Chrysler, which suffers the additional fact of a product line that is in most respects at best merely adequate.

The Japanese automaker's U.S. sales strategy has long focused on having fewer dealers selling more cars per dealership than any of the Big Three. The thinking is that each dealer will make more money and be financially stronger as a result. The traditional Detroit strategy before Toyota came on the scene was the opposite - the more opportunities potential customers have to buy our products, the more likey they are to buy it.

But Toyota's strategy would be worthless if its products weren't sought after by consumers. Dealer count is a secondary issue, product appeal is the key to sales, which are the key to manufacturer profitability.

The tale is told in the numbers, as usual. Check out this excellent analysis by Bloomberg's Katie Merx and Keith Naughton on the math behind the dealer closings. Here's the key passage:

"Average new-auto revenue was $14.3 million for GM dealers and $12.8 million for Chrysler last year, compared with $40.9 million for Toyota, based on data from auto-research company Edmunds.com. Dealers also make money on used vehicles, parts and service.

"Each GM store averaged 444 new-auto sales, while Chrysler had 405, according to consulting firm Grant Thornton. Ford Motor Co. was similar, at 483. Japan’s three biggest automakers dwarfed those totals, with 1,200 for Toyota, 1,150 for Honda and 764 for Nissan Motor Co., Grant Thornton found.

"Shrinking GM’s dealer ranks to about 3,600 would push the automaker’s retailers to an annual average of 750 sales, said Paul Melville, a Grant Thornton auto-retailing analyst in Southfield, Michigan.

"'It’s heading in the right direction, but it’s still only 65 percent of where Toyota is,' Melville said. 'They’ll still have a lot of low-volume stores.'"

So, closing dealerships isn't what will restore Chrysler or GM to profitability. Which raises an interesting question for the White House: If getting Chrysler and GM back to profitability is the goal, why force any dealership to close?

In 34 Years of managing automobile dealerships this has to be the dumbest move in the history of our business. How can closing any dealerships HELP Chrysler one dime, it just can not happen. Dealerships do not cost the manufactures money they PAY them money up front before cars and trucks are retailed. This has to be political because on any other level it's just plain stupid. Taking a store that was worth milions 2 years ago and making it worthless is a crul move only the goverment can pull off. But to give their francsise to another dealers at no charge is criminial at a minum. You need to keep up the diligent work to find the turth, becasue the bull we have been told so far doesn't wash, there is some other real reason why they would shut down a profitable dealership and Americans deserve to know the truth. We can handle it!!!!

Well, so much for this Barack Obama's claim during the election that he was going to run an open, ethical administration. Targeting and destroying the livelihoods of Republican supporters while rewarding his own? Robert Mugabe and Hugo Chavez would nod their heads in approval at this Obama tactic. Small wonder that our federal republic is foundering under this president, and is about to become only a larger version of the banana republics headed by Mugabe & Chavez.

The Obamanista's are executing a campaign of wealth destruction that is unrivaled by anything in history. The KGB and the Soviet Central Committee couldn't have thought this stuff up. Their miscalculation lies with under-estimating American entreprenurial spirit. But I guess in those cases, the Obama administration will nationalize those business ala' Hugo Chavez. VERN RUTTER: What does your data tell you? It tells you that entreprenurial individuals that have drive, intellect and create jobs more than likely wouldn't vote for Obama and his Marxist/Hugo Chavezian policies. On the other hand, those that lack all the qualities of self-sufficiency and the drive to do better for themselves, their families and their community probably would vote for Obama.

Crazy Vern may have a point, but there is still something about all these closings that is unnerving. No one will describe the criteria determining who gets cut and who does not. The dealers being cut are just as profitable as those left to continue. Both Chrysler and the Obama Administration deny they are responsible for the decisions. So we are left with trying to find rational behavior where there appears to be none. Perhaps some of these dealers being cut are "more Republican than others" (i.e. they contributed substantially more to the Reps than to the Dems).

Chrysler dealers shut down in Obama bankruptcy are mostly Republican? It seems a crosscheck of dealerships to be closed versus donations shows almost all the dealers to be closed donated to Republicans. http://hotair.com/ Steven Pearlstein: Oh, please. What percent of all auto dealers are Republican? I bet its (sic) pretty high."

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

As someone who's worked in the auto industry for years, I can testify that about 99.99% of all car dealerships are owned by Republicans. Most dealerships these days are owned by giant corporations such as Sonic, Van Tuyl, Lithia, AutoNation, etc. that tend to lean heavily Republican due to Republicans' pro-business policies. The ones that are owned by independent owners/families tend to favor Republicans for the same reasons. Also, the Chrysler dealers that are being closed are some of the lowest-volume sales dealers in their respective markets; and, at least in my area, tend to be older stores with outdated facilities and smaller lot sizes. Attempting to politicize the closing of dealerships is an unfounded logical leap. The reason the closing dealers are GOP donors is because most dealer owners lean GOP; not because Obama or Congress is targeting Republicans over Democrats.

If this is true, then the President, Emmanuel and the rest of the auto task force should be indicted under RICO. Plain and simple, that is what this has turned into.

Vern: In the first place the whole idea of the present auto strategy was to save 90,000 UAW jobs. Given that far more jobs than that will be lost proves the political element of the present Administration. You want to refute the facts then show the percentage of Republican Dealerships that were closed versus the percentage of Democrat dealerships closed down. I am quite sure if you even take the time to do this, you will only prove the accuracy of this story. The present administration has unquestionably brought Chicago's corrupt political behavior to D.C. The only question left is how long it will take you and others to realize that action is as bad for you as it is for it is for the political persuasion you so love to denigrate.

No surprises here, the only surprise is the media is NOT covering anything this administration does honestly, if they were, most average people around the country would be outraged. This administration is scary to say the least, they have wrapped themselves in the flag only to destroy it. My only hope is that the military will stand to defend the constitution if it comes to that and put power back in the hands of the people, that is all that matters.

While quite a few people have dismissed him out of hand, I consider myself skeptical, but curious. I think the only objective thing to do is look at the proof behind Vern Rutter's claim earlier in the comments section. It might also be interesting to see a comparison of financial performance between dealerships that stay open vs. dealerships that close. Finally, I'd also like to understand the relationship between dealers and car companies. What it is about a dealership that saves the car company money when it closes? If it is truly a cost-saving measure, why not allow manufacturers to sell direct to consumers? I don't think that's done right now, is it? If so, why not? I hope that Mark Tapscott will consider these things for clarification in a future article.

However, to answer the fact that this move is politically oriented, one needs only see who was given majority ownership (UAW) out of line with the present laws of this land. Even IF its true that 88% of dealerships are owned by republicans, then it means roughly 12% would be dem, and if there are 789 of 3181 dealerships closing, that would mean that about 95 would be closing that are Obama leaning dealerships. So far, they found 1. So this story has legs.

Yes, we will tear it down, but yes we can rebuild it even better than before! In automotive terms, we under Obama will now tear down the economic engine of this country, rebuild it with new parts and tune it up to run better than ever!

This is nly a small part of BO's damage. His bank stress tests are requiring banks to raise huge amounts of capital, they are doing it be reducing their investments, i.e. credit cards, this is leading to a lot of people (with good credit) having their accounts closed or their limits lowered which is reducing business just when we need business growth. Put a couple of "think-they-know-it-all" idiots in charge and screw it all up. On top of this, BO's forcing allthis down our throats while he has the political power. After August, when the congressional session ends, the Gov will go into re-ellection mode and he wont be able to get nearly as much done. Lets just hope after Nov 2010 the Dems aren't nearly as strong.

I'm starting to lean toward the notion that the administration is closing perfectly good dealerships to get minorities into them with federal start-up money. If the numbers show an owner universe with predominate GOP ownership, closing a representative sample of them is not statistical "disparate impact" against GOP or white owners, and thus not protected by civil rights laws. Perfect. Affirmative action insulated from federal litigation.

Mama

May 28, 2009

The four dealerships in Maine that are to be closed have no record of any political contribution. Of the 22 dealerships that are to remain open, 7 (32%) contributed to republicans, 3 (14%) contributed to democrats, 13 (59%) contributed to the National Auto Dealer Association and 6 (27%) have no record of contribution (on opensecrets.org). The totals add up to more than 100% because 7 contributed to more than one of the groups.

If this is true, I have a follow-up question. With the goverment and the UAW having contolling intrests in both Chrysler and General Motors, what does this mean for suppliers, mainly small ones that have donated to Republicans? What does this mean for suppliers that are non-union? I can forsee Chryler and GM "consolidating" their suppliers to those that are Dem doning, union buisnesses.

You then toss in politics and Liberal bias and you get shock and awe from a party that stated they would be the party of fairness to the American people. When will the American people wake up to the fact they are living a nightmare scenario one after the next. Bush was no Prince either.

Even if it's shown that car dealers are more likely to be Republican, the fact remains that Obama gave them the shaft whereas he bent the rules of all prior bankrupcy precedent to give his union co-conspirators the keys to America's automotive industry. Obama will never do such favors for industries or demographic groups that lean Republican.

for the repeated posts about calling this study BS because the control group wasn't analyzed. Actually we need to look at each case individually and have it explained why THAT dealer was closed. I'm willing to wager a ton of money that we can find at least one democrat supporter that was unfairly protected/helped. Hiding behind a control group number doesn't prove that nothing wrong is taking place. And that's the problem with gov't trying to run a business.

Absolutely moronic analysis.

The saddest part of this is that Obama has made clear that "Wealth redistribution" is his major goal - and the American press and people accept this. His programs, his tax structure, his supreme court appointments - all about the government making decisions on "who" will get resources. If you are successful, it is your fault that someone else is not, and the government will punish you for it. And make no mistake, it is not just the "wealthy" getting hit - this will take the middl class and drag it down as well..

Wealth redistribution - every facet of his program will be driven by this concept (call it socialism/fascism, whatever you want). You are no longer entitled to create your own "American dream" - now the government will decide who will win. Not fairly, but by their "enlightened choice".

It's very easy to criticize the Dems for closing dealers who contributed to the GOP because we are left without one crucial statistic: What percentage of dealers contributed to the GOP and what percentage to the Dems, and what number to both? Being a sales-driven, consumer-oriented, loan-dependent business, I bet you'd find an overwhelming number of dealers contributed to the GOP. Numbers please! Show me the stats.

May 28, 2009

What difference does it make if most auto dealers are Republican? Let’s say they are – this could still be a brilliant stealth move by the Democrats to cut local Republicans off at the knees. I wish I knew how to check out the party dynamics of the DISTRICTS the closed dealerships fall in. The question I’d ask is, what would drying up significant streams of campaign funds to the Republican Party do in that particular district? Dealerships in districts where this might be a game-changer get cut. Who would suspect? I mean, to me it’s clear that even if every single auto dealer on earth was Republican, it doesn’t prove this was not a politically motivated move -- they would only need to wipe out certain dealerships in certain vulnerable districts to make a huge difference in the local party balance of power.

My sister-in-law lives in Minneapolis in an upscale apartment, drives a Lexus and lives on unemployment from her stint as an executive secretary. She periodically gets a job just to re-qualify for unemployment. She's a liberal and always votes Democrat. In the meantime, I work 60 hours per week to support my family and home, can't afford luxury cars and don't qualify for aid for my oldest girl's college. I always vote Republican. This defines the parties for me. As it is, I'd rather just send my sis-in-law a check every month instead of having to also pay the 50 bureaucrats that handle the money before it makes her car payment. This is the system we've created. These dealerships will later be handed out as government entities to unqualified people so that they won't have to make a profit. People don't realize that all money is just a marker traded for work. When there is no work, money is worthless.

Why won't chrysler or Washington come out with how they chose what dealers? I heard one exec say it was underperforming dealers, but then there was a dealer who said his sales were in the upper 2% of the nation. Then I heard that they just wanted three brand stores (Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler) but I just read that there are still like 40 one brand stores still open. This really does warrant a congressional investigation as to who all these dealers are and WHY they were kicked out. The taxpayer now owns Chrysler, we have to tell our representatives to act. This is scary! This should not happen in America!

I'd like to think you would give yourself a little more credit than that. Do yourself a favor - go get an education, create a business, and liberate yourself from these unfair oppressors you face. Car dealers as a whole, those who are being closed as well as those who aren't, are far more likely to be Republicans. Of the contributions by those being closed, 92% went to Republican candidates. Of the contributions by those not being closed, 88% went to Republicans, an insignificant difference. This is just more false outrage from whiny wingnuts. Grow up people.

I don't doubt in the least the validity of these accusations. The Obama administration is the most partisan in our nation's history. I already sort of understood that dealerships lean Republican. But it cannot be that the proportion of GOP/Democratic donations by car dealerships (or GOP/anti-Obama donations, as I've seen some of the dealers contributed to Hillary's campaign, etc.) is so unanimously Republican. And these new developments about eliminating competitors to Democratic dealers only reinforces this reality. Another dirty trick by a very deceitful White House. Moreover, think of all of the jobs that Obama is destroying (and has already destroyed)! I vow never to buy another "American" (government-owned) car in my life.

Democrats arguing that these businesses are "99.99%" are disengenuous at best, and liars at worse. They have zero ("0") evidence to support their argument- they simply accept out of hand what their leaders tell them. If they were truly independent, carefully considerate voters and true lovers of our nation they would simply ask what the above author asks- Where's the transparency? Support your argument. Republicans have. I'm not convinced the conservatives are right- but they have shown irrefutable data to back-up their claims. Why can't the left? Seems so simple.

Obama is the most corrupt president this nation has ever seen. It's amazing how much damage he has done in such a short time. Obama uses his power to give your money to Acorn while punishing those who might diagree with him. It's hard to tell if he's more a socialist or a fascist.

From fivethirtyeight.com: "88 percent of the contributions from car dealers went to Republican candidates and just 12 percent to Democratic candidates. By comparison, the list of dealers on Doug Ross's list (which I haven't vetted, but I assume is fine) gave 92 percent of their money to Republicans -- not really a significant difference."

A little sanity is in order here, this sounds like partisan reporting, red meat for the tin-foil crowd, how about some solid evidence before going off the deep end. Wouldn't it make sense that most dealers as business people would be repubs?

EVEN IF TRUE (NOT)! that both Democrat and Republican dontating dealers were closed and the percentages just happened to be along statistical lines; it begs the question as to why the government is in the business of closing down business in the first place (that just happen to be mostly Republican/ wink wink). What is the huge benefit to Chrysler in closing down dealers who bought their inventory? What justifies the government making such a bold face move for at best, very little benefit? Had these been Democrat donors, same result? NO WAY. IT IS ABOUT POLITICS regardless of what the statistics show UNLESS someone can articulate a very important advantage Chrysler gets by having less shelf space. I don't think so.

The main reason either one of these companies is failing is because 'fair weather' americans have supported foriegn companies. Even though car companies like Toyota, Nissan, Subaru build their cars here and employ americans, when they sell a car, the profits from that sale goes overseas. Those people that buy & drive their japanese, korean, chinese, german, british, italian, etc cars are supporting foriegn economies, not the one that they live in. True Americans will only buy American products! Of course, the democraps want to give this country away, and support foriegn economies, just like they the lazy, shiftless welfare recipients, and illegal aliens that they have been supporting more and more over the last 60 or 70 years. Quit giving our country away!!! If everyone bought american products, we wouldn't be having this conversation!!

If this is true it needs to get out there. This has got to be the most ridiculous piece of crap I've ever read. Why the hell does EVERYTHING have to be a partisan issue? I can count on one hand the number of business owners I know who are democratic. This doesn't change the fact that closing retail outlets will do nothing to help Chrysler, but that's another story. This is akin to General Mills not selling enough cereal so we'll start closing grocery stores.

With this Admin I would not doubt it. But this is change you can beleive in. Unfortunately, in the long run this is all going to be irrelevant. Chrysler and Obama, err Govt Motors will be small players in the auto industry, if at all. Who, would ever buy an American car now? Of course, Obama and the Dems want this as they want us in mass transit and want to control every aspect of our lives. Obama voters, this is the change you voted for. You just simply never took the effort to find out what the change would be. I'll go with Auto Prophet - how many dealers donate Democrat anyway? But you're right - why close dealers? (And with what criteria??) I seriously doubt any are a net drain on the company. If sales are down 50% or so, I would think any marginal dealers would take care of their own closing. here in Canada they're closing dealerships too, and I don't think any donated to McCain; our feds are Conservative, too. Surprisingly, one of the biggest most successful (Pontiac) dealers is closing. One wag suggested that the closings were based on customer satisfaction - they finally found a use for those annoying surveys you get every time you use the dealer for anything.

May 28, 2009

A couple of possible rational business reasons for closing more republican-donating dealerships rather than dem-donating ones:

1. If you look at the actual maps people have posted showing where the dealers are closing, it looks like dealers are being closed in rural areas, while they are remaining open closer to population centers. This could be a good business strategy, since customers in rural areas end up travelling into town anyway occasionally, while those in town rarely need to venture into outlying areas. However, rural areas tend to vote repub, while urban-dwellers vote dem, so this rational business strategy ends up looking like some nefarious plot.

or 2. Anybody who voted republican in the last election is obviously a complete idiot, and thus unlikely to be able to run a successful business. On the other hand, dem supporters, statistically, are better educated and more successful, and more likely to help Chrysler back on its feet.

OK, buying a GM or Chysler will be harder to do, since there will be less dealerships. Buying a GM/Chrysler I would like to drive will be harder if the CAFE standards are enforced (slower, less safe cars that get more mpg but have little style drawing me to them), and yet, as a taxpayer, I will cover part of the cost to produce a car I don't want & can't buy anyway once the dealership is gone. May 28, 2009

While it's true that dealerships do not add to the manufacturer's cost of goods sold, intrabrand competition does affect (downward) retail price, and therefore indirectly wholesale price; i.e. sales--the top side of gross margin. The only way to improve margins while holding the line on costs (read, maximize return to the UAW)is to increase sales. And given the likely LOSS of UNIT volume that would follow dealership terminations, make that increase UNIT sales, i.e., price. With the car czar's portfolio of 80% of the New GM's Obamamobiles and a profit and loss statement to manage, what possible motivation might there be to level the playing field populated by the competition--upward?

This is a bald faced lie. If you look at the total group of car dealerships that donated to political campaigns, you will see they disproportionately donated to Republicans. Thus, any politically unbiased selection of car dealerships would consist of predominantly republican donors. If you disagree with the president, do it honestly. You do no service to your side by making such a false arguement.

Susan

May 28, 2009

I commented above and forgot to put my name, but I'd like to repeat that this would certainly be a brilliant tactical Chicago-style dirty trick to play on the Republicans if the purpose isn't so much to punish Republican dealerships, or even close down competitors to Democratic-owned dealerships (that's icing on the cake), but rather to simply cut off streams of contribution monies to local Republican candidates by "innocently" closing "random" dealerships (and since most dealerships seem to be Republican anyway, it would be hard to say they were being partisan in choosing one dealership over another) in STRATEGIC DISTRICTS, where in their estimation, a slowdown in Republican donations would make a potentially game-changing difference in the Democrats' favor.

Barnestormer

While not contributing to manufacturing cost, intrabrand competition does pressure retail, and therefore indirectly, wholesale price. Normally, gross margin management would include working both the sales and cost of goods sold sides of the gross margin line. But normality goes out the window when management is a democratic administration and costs begin with the letters U-A-W. The management question for the car czar will be, how to gain market share by RAISING price. Let's just say that owners of Toyota, etc. dealerships (should we start calling them NGOs?) might do well to listen carefully for phrases like "leveling the playing field."

While it is unfortunate that a little-known product of the Chicago Political Machine has made his way to our White House, it is more unfortunate that he did with only 52% of the vote (and that's questionable). His socialistic ideas are tearing the fabric of this great country apart. We must stop the complaining, unite and seriously call for an impeachment before there is noting left to fight over. Doesn't matter his color, a man should judged by his actions. Obama has jumped into bed with too many and now it appears they're calling in the favor. Stop him now. United we stand, divided we fall!

Susan, have you not noticed the strong evidence posted here that the vast majority of Chrysler dealers were Republican? If the number is 90%, what districts aren't affected? Does this have no effect on your hypothesis? I think you would have been much better advised to leave your name off your post. By the way, there was a slow-down in Republican donations last year. Yet none of the Chrysler dealerships had been closed. Explain please.

Jack

May 28, 2009

I do hope that someone somewhere is looking at ALL dealers political contributions. I do however strongly suspect, based on prior actions by the Obamist Regime, that it will be proven that Republican donors are indeed targetted simply for that reason.

This may or may not be true, however given the administrations tactics used in the bankruptcy it would not surprise me at all. The law means nothing to Obama if it gets in his way, and is the holy grail when it works in his favor. He has shown this to be a fact. It's all irrelevant anyway. He & the UAW will get both Chrysler & GM and promptly run what's left of them into the ground with Ivy League lawyers trying to run manufacturing companies and using tax payer money. So all you pro Obama supporters don't worry, you will get the "change you can believe in"

The dealers have a real serious problem. It is one word OBAMA. He is a scourge upon the American landscape. The American people were duped by a TelePrompter Orator. He appears not to be reading and it did appear he was grasping something. The something was fascism. His remarks to Joe the Plumber should have been more then a warning from the most Liberal Senator that has walked the halls of Washington. He is a liar to boot. Hiring lawyers in defending him from having to prove he is eligible to be President. Many accepted the State of Hawaii as being credible. The State has gotten something from Obama in return. Never trust someone in government that tells you they are being truthful. The chances are the truth is not black and white. Obama and his ilk will destroy this Country. Biden was right, Obama is now being tested by the mad man in North Korea and this little twit is shaking in his boots at the White House.

This finding may have some impact, first if it can be reliably proven (I'm not doubting here) but also if it gets to the main stream press. Proving may be the simplest task, but there is no way anything like this would be given the same treatment as say, Sarah Palin by the main stream media. Because the main stream media is slavishly controlling the conversation, this is going nowhere and unfortunately neither is Obama and neither is socialism in this country, sad to say.

What is the definition of MARXIST? Sort of like a mafia thug, isn't it? BTW - Richard Hofstadter: The slogan chanting ALL comes from the LEFT. "Yes we can". I see poor spelling on both sides (have you visited the Daily KOSS or Huffington Post lately?). That doesn't make the people any less of a citizen (lucky for you leftists). The Anger is all on the left. Those of us on the right usually Pity you. You sound like someone who wants to be pitied. Let mama Government take care of you. Name calling and conspieacy theory-spouting is Democrat all the way (example: Bush blew the twin towers up). The real question is: How many Hofstadter's does it take to elect a Marxist? (Calling Obama a Marxist is NOT name calling - look it up in the dictionary. It is undoubtedly Obama).

The fact that one dealer who contributed to Obama was shut down should be conclusive proof that the shutdowns were non-partisan. And anything else I can say to keep Obama from coming after me next. In an "end-of-partisanship-as-we-know-it" way, of course.

The issue that has not been addressed is that, regardless of whom these dealers supported, are the percentages equal? If political considerations were not made in this case, then the percentages of left and right leaning dealers who survive compared with those who get the ax should statistically be the same. If they are not, then it is stark evidence of bias, and in this case bias which costs hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars. Percentages, guys, percentages. They must be the same or it is evidence of wrong-doing.

I can't believe the hypocrisy and double standards that are being described on this message board. When the auto makers originally asked for money from George Bush, many of you Republicans said that these companies should just go into bankruptcy instead of feeding at the government trough. You had no problem with it then because the people who were going to get hurt were the unions, who you hate. Now that President Obama has convinced the car companies to restructure, your story has changed. Suddenly you cry foul when your people are the ones being affected. How come you didn't think about that when the unions were being targeted by Bush? Can't you guys figure it out? We won the election! We have the votes! Now go away until you can muster up enough votes to take it away from us! And that won't happen once we change things so much that you can never recover. Anyone else would have released all the information when in fact they knew the truth to be self evident. There are now over 400,000 people that feel the same way I do, about this Bo Pete. It seems likely to me that the real pattern we will see to the dealership closings is not political party, but diversity. Yes, most of the dealers cut are republican and donate to republican candidates. I'm willing to bet they are also mostly white males, and that the percentage of white males in the dealers that are being retained is much lower. And that's a shame. They need to release the criteria used in making this decision and to reveal who made the decision.

These hard working dealers that have put their life's blood into these businesses need to more then angry at Obama. As we continue to gain strength against the stated goal of the Obama Administration. I would also agree we need to look for someone that can be trusted as in a George Washington or a Winston Churchill. A true Statesman not some klutz that is the community organizer. He is determined to follow his Father a born Socialist but Obama is going into a different direction of Fascist. A fascist wants someone else to do the heavy lifting. He want to be the one micromanaging it. No work Obama but adulation seeking Fascist. Reminds me of Hitler and Mussolini.

I know you are all sore losers.. most of you just losers.. but come on.. get a grip on reality and stop believing everything your right wing propaganda machine keeps churning out. This was the same propaganda machine that has us being attacked again w/out the Patriot Act, and the same Propaganda machine that had WMD's all over Iraq.. When will you people grow up & accept the facts that someone you didn't vote for is the President. I am so sick and tired of reading about and hearing about grown adult acting like children who didn't get their way. Most of your posts are ignorant and riddled with spelling/grammatical and factual mistakes that it only validates my claim that you are all idiots. I wish every republicant would just crawl back under their rocks for another 8 years so our New administration can clean up the mess you idiots created.

I had a strange dream the other day. In it Chinese leaders were talking to US leaders telling them how US leaders have no control over their people... that they can't demonstrate unified control, which China has. And then the US leaders said they would demonstrate how they have 'enough' control to force a unified single government on the people, and systematically eliminate any oposition. They seemed to feel this was necessary, and must be done very quickly, as though a deadline was approaching.

many people commentinghere recognize that we are in fascist territory here, but you continue to say "Wait until the next election!" Just what makes you believe a RAPIDLY moving fascist government is going to allow real and fair elections? When the courts and congress are controlled by the head of a fascist gov't, and businesses have been bankrupted and held under the heel of that gov't, what kind of "elections" do you think we will get? In the meantime, I would like to know where the lawsuits are of business and congress to stop all this unconstituional and illegal interference in the American marketplace?

Obama has little or no experience and he is using his life example to run our Country. Rule of law, is what you would have thought, he would have learned something in law school but he spent his time studying fascist ideas with the likes of Bill Ayers and Sorros. He is bad news for America. His policies will lead to the destruction of this Country and I do not believe we will survive his four years. He will try and force Israel to accept conditions which are unacceptable. He will then blame Israel as he is blaming things he does not understand. He is over his head and the American people may suffer with a tyrant.

Hey, I'm not drinking any more of the party Koolaid. I voted for "CHANGE" but not THIS kind of change! Barrack Obama and his team are going way too far with their socialist power grab. Their blatant and obvious attack on Republican-connected dealerships is so incredibly over-the-top. And my gosh, why are the power hungry labor unions being given so much stock and ownership in the auto makers? When did it become the #1 "mission" of auto makers to provide jobs? I thought their #1 mission was to build cars and sell them at a profit! The labor unions have ruined the US auto industry and now all they have are plants that will soon be idle with no profitable dealerships to sell cars from. Some business plan, huh fellow Democrats??? We should all be ashamed of what we did by voting in this socialist. I say BRING BACK BUSH!

My husband is one of the dealers who had his franchise revoked. We have franchise laws in Texas as well as 49 other states that prevent dealers from loosing their businesses. This is theft plain and simple. Obama is using the bankruptcy courts to circumvent law. I think it is quite amusing when you consider it was the Republicans (I am a registered Republican) who were against voting for the Detroit bailout during George Bush's tenure as President. As for dealership closings, Chrysler corporate made the decision of which dealerships were to close. I'm quite sure there were dealers who contributed to the Democratic party as well. I believe the decisions were based on how well the dealers were performing, and not which political party they belong to or support. I can hardly believe the number of ignorant comments on this site.

>Instead of directly confronting the main source of their problem - over-priced labor that put the Big Three at a major disadvantage on costs Hmmm... no. Sorry, the problem is that neither Chrysler nor GM are making the kinds of car that Americans want to buy. Incidentally, I'm not bashing the companies - GM and Ford make an absolutely excellent line of cars - they just happen t be made by their European division. Big, heavy, thirsty, hideously styled American clunkers are the problem more than anything else.

May 29, 2009

It is a simple matter to sample the Chrysler dealers, break them down by D, R or I, and get a table of percentages. Then find out what percentages were closed. For example if 70% of dealers are R, and 99% of those closed are R, then there is a problem.

I came to the realization in the middle of the night that this is far more nefarious than first thought. When one recalls the forced shakedown of US corporations ie: Beer, Coke, Nascar by the likes of the "community organizers" it is not much of a stretch that this is simply a continuation of the confiscation and reallocation of assets on a huge level. As this "taking" plays out undoubtedly race relations will implode and roll us back 60 years. The great telestrator in chief may preside over the ruination of this great country if we do not wake up soon. Live Free or Die, Wajosekman

If we are all so concerned with increasing government intrusiveness into corporate America, and perhaps, eventually, our everyday lives, (and I think we are heading this direction at exponential speed) then we all need to make our voice heard loud and clear during the 2010 congressional elections...The larger the voting turnout, the larger the impact!

May 29, 2009

The closing of approximately one third of GM and Chrysler dealerships rings something like a death knell for the US auto industry. Aside from the economic impact of putting thousands of people out of jobs and taking tax revenues out of the mix, the simple fact is that the owners of those dealerships have millions (tens of millions, actually) invested in each facility and they aren’t going to walk away from that investment. Instead, they will seek to fill the facility with any franchise that will keep them in business, which translates to foreign car makers. Thus, in one fell swoop Obama’s hatchet man has reduced the US automakers market share to about one-third on their home turf—a blow they are unlikely to ever recover from. I believe that we will see the last of GM and Chrysler within the next five years, and will be lucky if Ford is still around in eight to ten.

May 29, 2009

There is just one problem with this theory. Nobody has bothered to look up data for the control group: the list of dealerships which aren't being closed. It turns out that all car dealers are, in fact, overwhelmingly more likely to donate to Republicans than to Democrats -- not just those who are having their doors closed. So a random walk of closing dealerships will, being fully representative, automatically include lots more Republicans. It's not even math. It's simple arithmetic. Those interested in actual facts should check this out: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/05/news-flash-car-dealers-are-republicans.html

May 29, 2009

This is great, so when the car companies fall into bankruptcy under a Republican administration they can just throw out the unions and make their party happy. You know a little tit for tat, that will be the outcome of this administration. Every change of power will come with paybacks and who will suffer, the American Public. That is what we as voters need to control, fire any politician that weighs the political costs for their actions. They need to do whats right regardless of their political party. Power to the People.

Thirty years in automotive sales management and marketing I have never seen a manufacture make such a dumb move. I really need to see where closing a Chrysler Dealer that sales 600 new cars a year is going to generate more sales. They should have a store on every corner to compete with Toyoya, Nissan and Honda. Limiting axcess to the product is nuts. I can see shuting down a small town dealer in a small demographic market that may be a burden to a larger dealer in a metro area. These dealers give consumers a convenient place to price shop, even though the consumer is not going to buy there, this just costs the metro dealer gross. This could have been done as a demographic solution to create more profitable dealers. I have researched where some of these stores are located in comparison to their counter parts. Who ever chose these dealers is an idiot.

The Truth

May 29, 2009

Um... you morons realize that something like 88% of car dealers give to republicans while 12% give to democrats...right? May 30, 2009

Hoo! What fun it is to read the crowing of the dems here, as they try to puff out their little hairless, concave chests in triumph. Round up the Republicans and put them in concentration camps? Gas them? LOL! (As if you'd have the backbone to actually fight anyone straight up.) You girls are a riot! Well here's the thing, kids: The country's going down the toilet and it's ALL on YOU, your party and your thug B-HO, 100%. The Media Wing of the obama campaign will do their best to cover it up with kitty litter but eventually it will become obvious to all that putting the dems in charge was a huge mistake. And you will be toast, for good. So ride the wave while you can and enjoy your last hurrah. We'll continue to point and laugh while we do our best to hold things together in the meantime. Then we'll clean up your mess, like always.

I am surprised to read you are against closing dealers. Just about every analysis I read about GM says the same two things. Too many brands and too many dealers. It was one thing 40 years ago when GM had 50% market share, when you had to physically go to a dealer to have a look at a car, and so proximity to a dealer might drive sales. But now? 20% market share, and the internet to take "virtual tours"? As for Chrysler? Well in my city, there are two Chrysler dealers literally next to each other. A bit silly don't you think?

Been in the business for thirty one years. have yet to meet a democratic dealer. Known alot of former democrats that made it big in the car business and then became republicans. In the northeast these dealers made their money by selling to "blue collar democrats" I'm sorry. I don't feel a bit sorry for these dealers that have become generational cash cows.

Good grief

May 30, 2009

Back in the Bush days, the charge was partisan appointments of US attorneys. You know, the people who decide who gets sent to jail and who doesn't Not a peep from the righties about this, the most essential function of government, being turned into a partisan tool. And, of course, the political parties have every reason to convert the justice department to their uses. But car dealers? Why on earth would the Obama administration bother with partisan terminations of car dealers? They want the company to turn around. They gain nothing from random closures. Every day I am amazed at the fall of the Republicans. Every day they come up with something stupider, which leaves the base smaller and stupider, so the next day they'll out-dumb themselves yet again. This is powerful stupid.

This is all very hilarious to read: the blind and bigoted elephants stampede mindlessly, believing only what they choose and cursing any change that fails to favor their prejudices. The Examiner's Mark Tapscott has a phony issue and he knows it, he's shamelessly pulling the strings of the self-deluded; Republicans are prone to this, just check the last 80 + years. Nothing can be done for you, poor boys.

So regardless if they targeted GOP-leaning dealers vs DEM-leaning dealers (are there such things???), closing dealerships was done at the urging ths Auto Task Force. And it is a stupid idea that will not save GM and Chrsyler one dime as the dealers pay all of their own bills. Nor will making GMs dealer netowrk like Toyotas serve the auto-buying public better. Just look at JD Powers dealership satisfaction ratings of Toyota dealers vs GM dealers; Hummer dealers are 2nd (only behind Jaguar), and Lexus is 3rd, Cadillac is 4th, Buick 9th, Saturn 11th, Pontiac 14th, SAAB 15th, Chevrolet 16th, GMC 19th, and Toyota 28th (behind EVERY GM brand). So maybe having so few dealers makes them complacent, or cocky, but it does not make them better.

It's too bad that people with differing opinions have to resort to immature name-calling in an effort to make themselves look intelligent. Wow, what part of "most car dealers are republican" don't you guys understand? You all need to go back to school and take some statistics courses before you fly off the handle at every blog posting which uses completely ambiguous information as a "statistical" basis for instilling paranoia.

First, auto dealers gave to Republicans over Democrats in the 2008 elections at the rate of 8:1 so of course the closings effect alot of Republican contributers. How many dealers that are "not targeted for closing" also supported Republicans? Second, most Republicans in congress did not support the "bailout." The "no bailout strategy" would likely have lead to a much steeper decline in business if not an outright closing of the entire company. You can't have it both ways.

In all my years as a Republican, and I am 72 so you know it's been longer than I'd like to admit--I've never seen my party so consumed with being victims. In talking with a friend who owns one of the dealerships to be closed, he, who is a Republican as well, told me the Obama administration had nothing to do with selecting the dealerships to be closed. Chrysler and GM are making the choice to close the dealerships because they believe it will help their bottom line. There are many things with which I disagree with President Obama but I am getting very tired of the constant whining coming out of our leadership and our media. Grow up. Not everything and everyone is out to get the Republicans. We are a pretty strong bunch of people and these petty attacks are getting tiresome, even to this old Republican gal.

Also couldn't help but notice that one of the top persons running the bankrupcy of GM and Chrysler is like 31 years old and has zero background in economics or business. He's basically a lawyer. A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

well i guess if all those ranting would start buying american cars then GM and chysler would be back in business. Obama did not ask these automakers to make low quality cars that start falling apart at 20k miles while the hondas and toyotas hit 150k easily. GM and chysler owe more than they are worth and all of you believe they should keep operating that way? These people were bleeding to death before Obama came into power. wake up people use common sense.

Jun 10, 2009

Hey PVB, I would say are we in-between the complacency-apathy phases. Dependence is only a step or two away, which means bondage is just around the corner. Once we get there, maybe will get a clue and have another revolution to get us back to square one.

Jun 14, 2009

These dealership closings are wrong and pointless for certain! Obama still has a chance to make this situation right. He has the power to step in and admit the task force that he appointed made a huge mistake. If he does..my hat goes off to him. If he does not.. God help us all. This is not a United States of America that I recognize or can be proud of. The solution will come when there is much less bitterness on either side of the aisle.

Jun 15, 2009

I know that GM was thinning the dealer herd even before the Obama administration came in, and I suspect that Chrysler was doing the same. The thinning certainly accelerated after they put GM chief Rick Wagoner's head on a pike to show they were serious about the car companies getting their acts together. Anybody who thinks the administration is directing the companies to close certain dealerships based on political leanings is losing the grip on reality. If it helps you sleep better look at it this way: the overwhelming percentage of surviving dealerships are owned by Republicans. By the way, if anybody has an alternative plan for getting us out of this mess we are in, quit crying and put it forward.

Tony

Jun 15, 2009

Yes, most car dealers are Republicans... That's not the problem... It is that dealerships in Republican AREAS are disproportionately hit!

Coco

Jun 16, 2009

Obama's brother-in-law is the men's basketball coach at Oregon State University (in Corvallis). How many Jeep dealers in that area made the hit list? None. All three somehow survived even though the population is less than 10% of Portland-metro's population (an hour to the north). BTW, Portland only has three Jeep retailers. I am not saying there is a conspiracy, but it definitely makes me wonder.

What is the status of this claim. It seems by now we should have been able to findout if political donations are statistically different in the groups of dealers open and closed.
And how about the GM dealers?

Jim S

Sep 19, 2009

I would like to know this as well. It has been months and no one has been able to get more out about this or which GM dealers are being closed and what the actual stipulations were for the closings.

This Shouldn't Be The Case

Sep 22, 2009

This shouldn't be the case. What the administration should do now is disregard all those partisans and treat each and everyone as equal. GM, chrysler, and the rest have suffered long enough to be pushed further to the ground. What they should do is just let the new boards to improve the chrysler parts to stand again in the auto industry.

The references I find in the Bible about helping the poor refer to the "orphan and the widow" within the community who could not, in those days, help themselves. You people who are so intent on open borders (Tell me again, how many of the 6.2 BILLION in the world do you want us to support in this country ?)need to write Sr.El Presidente de Mexico and tell him to use some of that oil money, Am. aid, drug money, etc. to provide schools, jobs, and health care for his people. I refuse to take on his responsibility. You open-border types feel so righteous about helping others, but I'd be willing to bet you have some problems in your personal relationships, which you can't handle - so, you "relate" to those far afield; it's so much easier.

you said it yourself - no conclusions can be drawn until the statistical analysis comes in. the auto prophet is correct. "disparate impact" is b.s., sorry - if cuts have to be made in the auto industry, a consideration of party affiliations is irrelevant. should the criteria be more transparent? of course. but you can't cry party favoritism with this amount of information.

This is really confusing, as there should be some criteria for choosing the dealerships to be closed. And what is the reason for closing the profitable ones, especially if they are paying upfront to the factory?
I work in the car accessories business myself and this thing really scares me. Not the GOP/Republican ratio, but the fact that the reason is missing for closing ANY of the dealerships.
