GOP boycott could stall global warming bill

A group of Senate Republicans will "likely" boycott committee work on the chamber's global warming bill, which would block the legislation from clearing the panel.

The GOP members of the Environment and Public Works Committee want to see a full economic analysis of the legislation's impact before officially drafting the bill in a markup.

Committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., had hoped to hole a vote next week on the bill, which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020.

"It is imperative the we know how much this bill will cost and how many jobs will be lost before Senators are asked to vote," said Matt Dempsey, spokesman for committee ranking member James Inhofe, R-Okla., a global warming doubter. "If they do move forward next week, Republicans will likely seek to delay consideration."

Boxer would be essentially stuck if no Republicans show up because at least two members of the minority party are needed for a quorum.

"Boxer would be essentially stuck if no Republicans show up because at least two members of the minority party are needed for a quorum." Like THAT's ever stopped them. Babs will probably just declare a quorum unnecessary and pass it herself. Scary thing is.. if they could, they would.

Typical GOP. Aren't willing to debate the issue. Just obstruct. It would be one thing if the committee scheduled so GOP couldn't attend. But if the minority party chooses not to attend, shouldn't require a quorum.

The first word out of every Republican's mouth is money. They are pretty much anti-science and should not be allowed to have any input. I'm so tired of having to put up with caveman mentality. It is dangerous.

The Republicans would let the entire planet become uninhabitable rather than parting with a dime , their only virtue is greed and to them greed and being very stupid are virtues .

If Inhofe & the other Repbuliscums want to boycott then they should lose their vote. They never want to vote for anything that helps the people, earth or animals. Look how their holding up the unemployment benefits extention.

Note how Inhofe's mouthpiece disingenuously frames his master’s objection a climate bill – he wants to know how much doing something about global warming would cost, and how many jobs will be lost. What about the numerous jobs that would be created if the US adopted a sanity-based policy toward climate change? What is the cost in dollars, lost jobs and lives of doing nothing?

And how would Inhofe and his gang of slackers know if the committee provided the answers he claims to need (given that Inhofe and crew are not showing up for work while on the government dole)?
