Hondurans take their term limits very seriously

This excellent piece by Francisco Toro at The New Republic provides some very important context that most of the media has missed regarding the situation in Honduras. The most important thing you probably haven't heard on CNN:  Article 42 of the Honduran Constitution specifically makes “inciting, promoting, or supporting the continuation or re-election of the President of the Republic” one of six crimes for which one can lose Honduran citizenship. That provision is specifically named later as one of the so-called "cast-in-stone" provisions that cannot be changed "en ningún caso" -- under any circumstance (see Article 374). Honduran presidents can serve only one term, period, end of story.

In that context, the arrest and exile of President Manuel Zelaya, at the order of the Supreme Court, actually does make a lot more sense legally than you might otherwise suspect.

That's not to say it was done according to Hoyle – in fact, at least one army official has admitted it was not. The relevant article of the  Honduran Constitution appears to require that Zelaya be tried and sentenced first for seeking to stay in power, and only then deported. The decision to exile him immediately, according to another military official, was made at the last minute, supposedly to prevent violence.

But there is still time to do things right – Zelaya plans to return to Honduras on Sunday.

Obama has quickly allied himself with his soul mates, Castro and Chavez. Recall the picture of Obama with the worshipers of Che early in the campaign. Remember the associations maintained with the avowed terrorists Dorn and Ayers. This is the same Obama that finds so much fault in our own constititution that he now leads a all out assault to destroy it. Obama is emerging as the greatest enemy of Israel and friend of terrorists everywhere.

The problem is that in a democracy the people have a right to define the kind of government they wish to have. The Honduran constitution was written in 1982 by a corrupt government that received substantial financial aid from Ronald Reagan for their help to Oliver North and his obsession with the Nicaraguan Contras. Their Constitution was designed to maintain the elite oligarchy that leaches off the masses of poor because people. This is not sustainable the poor will rise up and take control of their government. In our country the people have a right to convene a constitutional convention and change their constitution if it suits them. Why shouldn't the Hondurans have the same option?

I'M NOW STARTING TO BELIEVE THAT OBAMA IS A SOCIALIS AND IT'S VERY SCARY! I'M SO HAPPY I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM! IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT OUSTED HONDURAN PRESIDENT WANTED TO STAY IN POWER FOR LONG JUST AS HIS FRIENDS FROM VENEZUELA AND CUBA!

'Bam hopes to do the same here -- thus his empathy Zelaya -- he hopes to emulate him.

Ed Written like a typical fascist. Legally elected Presidents become permanent dictators/Presidents for life.. Recognize the names, Adolf Hitler, Daniel Ortega, Benito Mussolini, Hugo Chavez? It was never the 'people' that demanded constitutional change, but rather the dictator... Ed, your support of slimy fascists gives you away. Do you also want to count every vote that supports your candidate and none for the opposition?

I'll betcha Ed would be singing a different tune if Bush had tried to extend his stay in office despite our Constitution. Funny how rationalization works for some people....
