Honduras: Obama administration finally and completely abandons Zelaya

The Obama administration's wishy-washy attitude toward Honduran elections finally lands him on the right side of the issue: in favor of Honduras and its democracy, and against ousted President Manuel Zelaya, who was thrown out after attempting to extend his reign illegally.

The United States says it supports Sunday's presidential election in Honduras as an "essential" part of a solution to that country's ongoing political crisis.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly says the U.S. thinks it is important that the people of Honduras have the opportunity to "express their votes in a free and transparent way."

...Spokesman Kelly noted that the election, in which neither [Interim President Roberto] Micheletti nor Mr. Zelaya is running, is being organized by an electoral tribunal that was selected and installed in a transparent, democratic process before the coup.  He said it is important the election be seen as free, fair and transparent, and is monitored by a credible international monitoring process.

After an Obama knee-jerk reaction to Zelaya's ouster in June, the U.S. had insisted on Zelaya's reinstatement. This  would have harmed Honduras's Congress and high court, which had ousted Zelaya, even as it served no discernible U.S. interest. At the same time, Zelaya's continuation in power would have benefited one of Zelaya's main allies and alleged sources of funding -- Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.

By hanging Zelaya out to dry -- leaving him powerless and languishing in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, possibly facing trial for illegally seeking re-election -- the administration saves face in Honduras and ultimately does the right thing. The Honduran Congress will vote on Dec. 2, after the next president has been elected, whether to reinstate Zelaya as a lame duck, and with the election already decided, they won't be under any pressure to do so and reverse their earlier decision.

So all's well that ends well. But even so, as we recently opined, a happy ending is still no excuse for Obama's half-cocked diplomacy, and no number of low bows to Honduras's next president will make up for the damage he has caused there. Again, his legendary inexperience in world matters shows.

I agree whole-heartedly. There is no excuse whatsoever for the Obama administration's support of Zelaya. My question, is why at this late date did a change of heart occur? These people sound slow on the uptake.

"after attempting to extend his reign illegally." ---- It is a bold-faced lie.

Everything against Zelaya is based on this bold-faced lie .

I fill sorry for your readers forced to read your endlessly recycled lies.

And you Americans call your press free? Call your political system democracy?

Let's see
Yep
and Yep.
Gotta problem with that?
We don't have to look far on this. I have seen too many OTHER views from Honduras to believe YOU!
This was an attempt by a despot to put himself in power forever, like Chavez.
And Obama's first inclination was to protect a Socialist like Zelaya, as Obama is a Socialist, himself!
But Democracy has won, blubbering baby, too bad, so sad.
And what I don't understand is YOUR attitude about it when Zelaya's extended term Resolution has been public knowledge BEFORE the oust on the would be dictator. And maybe you are not aware, but the Honduras CONSTITUTION says ANY attempt to change it is TREASON! Don't like it? TOO BAD!
Maybe you don't like Democracy, that's OK, but if you don't, then leave Honduras. It has been shown that the COUNTRY wants Democracy. And a blubbering baby like you need not apply, LOL.

Bob, are you from Honduras??

I am, and what this article is saying is all true!! Zelaya was trying to stay in power and thank God we got rid of him. He would have made my beautiful country the next Venezuela, and we don't want that!

Bob obviously does not care to read and understand the Honduran constitution.
Why would he, he is obviously a leftist supporter of Zelaya.

OK Bob lets see you provide any FACTS to back up your claim..

Bob has no facts. His total contribution to the debate is to claim everything is a lie. Kind of thin gruel for a technique.

Move over Rev Wright. Make some room under the bus. While you are at it Rev, tell Van Jones to get off Granny and put that crack pipe down. We're going to be needing a lot more room down here. Welcome Senior Zelaya. For a while, we thought you would never be thrown down here with us. But, Obama forgot about that paper. Yeah, you know the Honduras Constitution. Oh, yeah, the same one we in the U.S. Have. ? Better make a copy of it. The last I seen of it, A.G. Eric Holder had it. He was walking towards The Obama Shredder. Hey, when are those ACORN officials getting here ? We might need a stretch bus conversion soon. Don't worry Obama is doing The Dithering Denial with that one. We may never see them here. I hear we might get some Navy Seals here soon. I sure hope so. It's dangerous here in Chicago. Especially, under a bus. We could use some protection down here.

The article mentioned Obama's inexperience, but his SecofState touts her experience and she was hand in glove with him. To me it exposes both as wild leftist. Thankfully we can see her as she is,a radical leftist not the moderate she tried to claim to be.

This election is a sad day for the world in view of the audacity of hope. The present rulers of Honduras used and continue to use murder and violence to sustain power over a people who has suffered under fascist military dictatorship for too long. The constitution under which they are oppressed was developed under tha very military dictatorship. Pres. Zelaya simply sought to ask all Hondurans by popular balot whether they should continue under that military/fascist regime or forge a new and popular path. The fascist fear the Honduran people say "Change, Yes We Can". Obama has disappointed the world. He has really proved to be only good at speeches but not truth, justice and genuine democracy. The present position of the US on this matter cannot stop the wheel of change from turning. Once again the desired leadership of the world from the archaic moribund unilateral relationships of the past has failed mankind and the future.
This is just as I feel as an independent thinker.

David Charles,

What are you talking about? There is no 'fascist military dictatorship' in Honduras. We just didn't want to be in the same mess as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. That's where Zelaya was headed. He and his family are known here for trafficking in cocaine and taking large sums of money from Chavez. Venezuela even printed (many were pre-marked with votes) the ballots. If you want to be an independent thinker, you should visit Venezuela and see why anyone who can leave there is now doing so.

The Question: "The United States has said that it will recognize a free and fair vote, but it had made no comment following the election."

The Answer: Hell, the U.S. has just recognized an 'election' in Afghanistan, in which only one candidate ran, and now Obama is committing to spending an extra $1B a month and more U.S. lives in a war to protect and extend that 'democracy'. Why would there be any doubt about Lobo in Honduras?

BTW, for those who, like Santayana learn from history, the U.S. was the first country in the world to recognize the 'Vichy' French government installed by the Nazi EMPIRE. Which explains the old adage, "It takes one, to know one" --- (empires that is)
