Joe Kennedy for Senate? Are you kidding me? UPDATED: New Republic's kIrchick nails the Chavez link

By: Mark Tapscott
Editorial Page Editor

Predictably, the push has begun to get a Kennedy into the Senate seat held for lo those many years by Ted Kennedy.  The Kennedys favorite newspaper - the Boston Globe - all but annointed Joe in a news story by Frank Phillips that also handily reminded everybody that the seat is, after all, the permanent property of the Kennedy family.

Said Philips:

"With Massachusetts having paid its final respects to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the politics of succession begins in earnest this week - candidates will emerge, a race will take shape, and the Kennedy clan will have to reveal whether it wants to keep the seat in the family.

"All eyes now are on Joseph P. Kennedy II, the former US representative, with family members and political allies expecting him to make a decision very shortly on whether to enter the Democratic primary.

"No other Kennedy of his generation with the political stature to step into the role has signaled interest in it, according to Democratic insiders and people close to the family."

Apparently, that sort of political analysis passes for serious thought on the Globe's pages.

There are at least three reasons why Joe Kennedy should not be a U.S. senator from any state. First, he's not only a defender of a declared enemy of the U.S., but is also guilty of shamelessly using that enemy's resources in an unsuccessful attempt to polish his own image here in America. I refer, of course, to Kennedy's deal with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez under which the latter gives the former heating oil which is then sold to "the poor" in America.

The deal makes Kennedy an enabler of a disgusting PR victory for Chavez and assists the tinhorn tyrant in his ongoing stripping of the Venezuelan people of the few remaining shreds of democratic freedom they have left. It is likely to be generations before the people of Venezuela will recover any realistic hope of regaining their freedom.

Besides, if Kennedy was serious about helping poor Americans stay warm in winter, he would work to get the government out of the energy industry's way so that it can develop the billions upon billions of barrels of recoverable oil resources in our own country, as well as the trillions of cubic feet of natural gas we also have waiting to be developed. Are our political and intellectual elites ever going to learn that the quickest way to cause shortages is to give government more control over the production and distribution of a needed resource?

Second, a review of his six terms in the U.S. House reveals absolutely nothing of memorable legislative accomplishments, athough he served on a significant panel, the House Banking Committee. He did manage, however, to divorce his first wife in 1991 in order to marry a former staff member in 1993. This kind of thing must be in the water at Hyannis Port.

Note that he asked the Vatican for an annulment of the first marriage because he wasn't mentally capable of entering the relationship. And he boycotted a 1991 speech to Congress by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to protest "the British occupation of Northern Ireland," thus suggesting that the "lack of due discretion or judgement" noted in his appeal for an annulment was not limited to his marital perspectives.

Finally, If the people of Massachusetts want to throw away their representation in Congress by electing somebody from the same family over and over again, that's their business. But I dare say most of the rest of us are puzzled - when we are forced to think about it at all - that they insist on perpetuating a faux royal American family. Don't they understand we banned aristocracy more than 200 years ago? Don't they get it that Camelot was mostly a PR sham?

Apparently they don't, if the Globe's view is indicative of the general opinion among Bay State citizenry that it's up to the Kennedy clan whether they want to keep the seat or not. What do they think they are dealing with here, a seat in the U.S. Senate seat or in the British House of Lords?

There is perhaps one consolation for those of us in journalism. The Boston Herald's Jules Crittenden puts it well in noting Glenn Greenwald's suggestion that we just give up and declare the Kennedy family royalty:

"Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons. God save ‘em all. We sell a lot of newspapers off their dynastic posteriors. Then you got your Gore, the current Duke of Earl, Marquis of Gaia. Sir Arnold. There’s lesser outliers like the Cuomos, Daleys and Jacksons. Maybe even a new Obama line just starting."

I dunno, Jules, I get tired writing the same story about somebody - voters or a spouse - being played for fools over and over again.

UPDATED: The New Republic's Kirchick nails the Chavez-Kennedy outrage

Not quite convinced by my thoughts above that Joe Kennedy ought not be in the Senate (or the House or anywhere else in the federal government)? Then maybe you will listen to one of the bright young minds at The New Republic, James Kirchick who demolishes Kennedy's defense of his deal with Chavez.

Among much else, Kirchick notes that "by shuttling oil to the underprivileged, Chavez was deliberately mimicking his hero Fidel Castro, who has sent Cuban doctors throughout the world as a supposed sign of international good will. But Chavez made no bones about the real motivations underlying his 'oil diplomacy': 'It is a card that we are going to play with toughness against the toughest country in the world, the United States,' he told an Argentinean newspaper."

Be sure and read the entire Kirchick column here.

One correction...Hugo Chavez is not technically a "dictator" but an elected president. Don't take me wrong...I am not a Chavez fan but I like to be honest about things and Chavez is the lawfully elected president of Venezuela. Just in case you didn't know.

BTW...the heating oil that Venezuela gave Kennedy helped to keep 17,000 homes warm in an extremely cold 2006 winter. Just sayin'.

Don't see this guy knocking the fact that the Bush family has made many inroads to politics... should I regard them as trying to be royalty too?
He must be jealous that those Kennedy's keep doing the right things to keep getting Re-Elected.

BTW I find nothing wrong with JPK trying to help LOWER the cost of heating Oil for his fellow citizens. Its MORE than the BUSH family ever did. Why didn't GWB pull those Speculators away from the CBOE & ICE markets when he knew they were bidding the pricces up to $150 a barrel? GWB did nothing for the common man. Thas why this next President is still trying to clean up the mess the former one left him.

Joe Kennedy will not risk humiliation by knocking on doors that would'nt open for anyone but Ted.Even the half-hearted attempt for a "Pulitzer" cover photo ( grandson saluting ala JKF jr.from inside a limousine) misses the mark .Ho Hum.

Most of the posts here are scary! Either the posters are mainly from Massachusetts........or the administration and the media did a great job in pushing the Kennedy/Obama agenda these last few days! Are there any other conservatives out there?

Thank God the last of the corrupt Kennedy Clan is gone (at least from Boot Legger-Nazi Lover Father Joe Sr.)! Now if we can see Pelosi, Reid, Rangel, Frank, Schumer, Boxer, Feinstein, Dodd, Lautenberg, and The Great Leader himself join Teddy, America can be great again. Let's see, bring to market our own oil, gas, and coal. Allow nuke energy to bring down our electrical cost. Stop losing jobs to owl and snail darters. How about following the Constitution again!!!

There are only two requirements for a politician in MA to get elected. First he must be a degenerate, second, he must be an idiot....Joe fulfills those qualifications.

Why not Joe Kennedy ? Kennedys have been elected to or appointed to office in the U.S. government for seventy-five years or more ...And every one of them has been somewhat less than "sterling" in character . It just doesn't seem to matter much in Massachusetts . Gleaming teeth , a hearty handshake , and a promise of government largesse goes a long way . The Kennedys have spent three quarters of a century supposedly "working for the common man" when in fact they are totally clueless about what it means to be "common" and wouldn't want to BE "common" to save their lives .

I suspect that the people of Massachusetts will get what they deserve when they vote Chappaquiddick Ted's replacement in. Out of all the possibilities, I think Joe is one of the most ridiculous, but that probably is the best indicator of his success in MA.

Oh god, not another 'drill baby drill' message here in this article! It's like saying the cure for alcoholism is to buy more booze. We have a consumption problem here in the U.S. and when China is closer to a move towards green energy (see Suntech) while we just bicker about left vs. right, our country is about to fail again. Come on people.

I'm probably the only republican in Mass - but if he runs, I will be voting for Joe Kennedy.. He's the best bet for our state.. He's already served previously, he's just as connected as his Uncle and he won't be going in 'green' with clout.. Plus, he's worked very hard to keep families warm during our frigid winter months and I quite frankly don't care where he gets the oil - he gets it done and that's what counts... While others talk about what we should do, etc.. Joe Kennedy is out there doing it... Also, he was absolutely correct regarding his stance on Northern Ireland years ago -- catholics were suffering just as much as our brothers in Africa under Apartied. As for his 'annulment' - his first wife wasn't even a catholic, so the only reason she fought it was because it was important to him.

Mark. Do you seriously write for a national newspaper? Just two BIG points. Firstly, hereditary peers have all but ceased to exist in the UK House of Lords since 1999. Secondly, Hugo Chavez is elected which - last time i checked - makes him a democratic appointment. Is it a case that if they are elected on the "wrong" side of your warped politics they become dictators? Half the governments of Europe buy oil from Chavez. Does that make them all appeasers as well. Check your facts, develop a coherent line of argument and you might just start to make a slight bit of sense. But i doubt it.

I recall a Washington Post article during the time that Jivin' Joe was 'serving' in the US House. The article pointed out that Joe was the 'most unpopular' representative in Congress (arrogance? attitude?). Is a reprise in the works? Somehow it doesn't seem that a Chavez-buddy would improve his popularity in Congress - - but leave it to Massachusetts to continue to provide the country with every reason to wish it would secede.

Putting another Kennedy in the Senate is exactly the same nonsense used to replace ChicagObama with Roland Burris, just because he was a black man.

How about follow the rule of law, which the Democrats put in place when a Republican was governor, and let the VOTERS decide who they want...what a novel concept to this corrupt government!

Given his uncle's effort to do exactly the same thing with the Russians (i.e. recruit Andropov to help him defeat Reagan)shouldn't this be more of a qualification than an obstacle?

The baby boomer Kennedy's are kinda seedy, now, if you know what I mean. Teddy hogged the limelight during their best years, and now they look like burned out rock and roll musicians and TV sitcom actors from the 70s. Definitely not charismatic.

Early demise really was the best thing for Jack and Bobby. We won't remember them as obese, croaking, middle age turkeys. Like Joe Kennedy IIb.2.

NO MORE KENNEDY'S

Sep 4, 2009

The last thing Massachusetts, and the rest of the nation, needs is another Kennedy holding ANY office. It's time for new blood and new vision. It's time we stopped electing people based solely on name recognition (that includes Bush's, Clinton', etc...). Massachusetts needs public servants that are interested in the well-being of the common people, the hard-working, honest, law-abiding people. We need someone who will stop raping the productive members (citizens) of society our society to support those that aren't.

But all that pales in that in his years of being a "Rep" offer little in the way of knowing who he is politically? Enough Kenndy's I want to see other, like I want to see another Bush.
