Katrina vanden Heuvel's preposterous tales of the 9/12 march

By: Byron York

Tens of thousands protest government spending and health care proposals in Washington.

Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor and publisher of The Nation, has just sent out a fundraising letter making fantastical claims about the 9/12 protest in Washington. Promoting the magazine's "Student Outreach Program," in which she and her colleagues offer teaching guides to help educators counter the influence of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, vanden Heuvel described the march this way:

Just days ago, Glenn Beck led the astro-turf 9-12-09 "Taxpayer March on DC." Compared to the millions who have marched for civil rights, equal rights, and gay rights, and against the war, Beck's 70,000 would be small stuff -- except for the tens of thousands waving Confederate flags, anti-gay hate signs, and shouting "White Power!"

Vanden Heuvel goes on to say that students need "well-equipped minds" to stand up to the "increasingly dangerous, racist and radical right wing." That's where the Nation's Student Outreach Program comes in -- with its teaching guides, the Nation Student Essay Contest and Student Journalism Conferences. "Won't you give a gift today to keep this essential program going strong?" vanden Heuvel asks.

Now, as far as vanden Heuvel's description of the march is concerned: I spent several hours there, and I think it would be very hard to make the case that it was astro-turf. Everyone I spoke to had come on his or her own accord, usually with a handmade sign, and paid his or her own way. As for the 70,000 attendance figure -- there are a lot of competing estimates about how big the crowd was, but it was definitely bigger than that.

But vanden Heuvel's ugly charges are the ones in which she claims that "tens of thousands" of people waved Confederate flags, anti-gay hate signs and shouted "White Power!" That is simply false.

I personally do not remember seeing any Confederate flags. But I figured that if there were a lot of them -- much less "tens of thousands" -- the people at left-wing activist sites like Democratic Underground would have pictures. Searching around a little, I found two -- here and here -- and not very prominent ones at that.

As far as anti-gay hate signs, I didn't see any of those either. Perhaps there is a photo out there, but I couldn't find it.

Finally, there were the "tens of thousands" of people shouting "White Power!" I didn't hear that. And one would think that with people from various lefty outfits at the Capitol, video recorders in hand, we would have records of such an event. I did spot this in an article in, of all places, the Nation:

I saw a tall, thin, bearded fellow with a boonie cap jogging up Pennsylvania Avenue shouting, "White power!" A few people looked around awkwardly, not sure how to react, but mostly the crowd just moved along.

If that in fact occurred, who knows what the man's point was? I did find video of one counter-protester who yelled "White Power!" as he attempted to mock the crowd. (He was clearly not welcomed by the actual demonstrators.) Perhaps the boonie cap guy was the same thing.

Vanden Heuvel can say what she wants in a fundraising letter. But she should spare us any further commentary about civility and reasoned discourse.

Yet another reminder, if one is still needed, that liberals and lefties lie. Lies are just another tool in the toolbox for those who believe the end justifies the means.

This poor excuse for a human is as ugly on the inside as one can be. Evil begets evil and she is a typical leftist who wishes to indoctrinate America's youth -- at least the ones that haven't already been converted by the liberal indoctrination already in place in our government run schools.

Here's a suggestion for an investigative story re: Vanden Heuvel -- her magazine is hosting an island cruise during this coming Christmas season -- it's a subscription tour -- a whole boatload of "the best and the brightest" like Vanden Heuvel -- regaled with too much food and a star-studded lineup of Big Lefties for a whole week -- The Examiner could book a competent young reporter and his girlfriend to take the cruise and file a report -- like "Innocents Abroad" on steroids, with plenty of marijuana and abortions-on-demand in the ship's infirmary -- the Examiner's young reporters would have to be booked under deep cover to escape detection -- Vanden Heuvel thinks like a snake --

The people who write this kind of garbage aren't normal, are they? If I thought it would do any good, I'd invite them to my house for a day to play with our Husky and help me weed the garden and see if that would help.

Well.... what can one say? Ms. Vanden Heuvel is a flat-out liar. She knows it and we know it. Some people are apparently comfortable being liars.

The 912 march scared the crap out of the left. I think they realize that their jig is up and all they can do is lie, lie and lie again. Their calumny will intensify, because they can't offer any solutions, just lies.

I hope some who received her letter read David Brooks' commentary that described how the tea party folks mingled at times with the black family gathering, with no awkwardness or anger shown. We can hope so at least.

I think the idea of crashing the cruise is a great one. It would have to be people who look like her target audience and can be comfortable hearing the talk.

I've never understood why people think this women is intelligent. She seems like an aging Valley Girl trying to impress a long-haired, pudgy, hippie high school history teacher. Guess what, out here in the real world, she means nothing, is nothing and will never be anything but a self important writer in a publication that no one reads. Is she related to someone important?

What can one say? The narrow-eyed despiser-in-chief of The Nation magazine has learned well from her Bukharin-apologist husband, Stephen Cohen. They, like the president, go out of their way to excuse the blood-stained expropriators of our fast-Stalinizing Republic. Remember, to them, one death is a tragedy; a million, a statistic. Just look at the healthcare numbers' wild fluctuations to see what I mean.

Love Katrina. And if you people aren't freaked out by the folks in that crowd - or by the people who sponsored it - you surely should be.

The America they "want back" no longer exists and thank god for that.

It's time to move along folks. You elected a black man as President. Embrace the change - welcome the fresh air.

Confederate flags - how dreadful!!

When the left gets together, no one seems to mind the Vietnamese, Chinese, Iranian, Palestinian and other various assorted anti-American banners and signs they display.

However, just let one or two show up with an American flag....

Why is it that the same people who argue for compassion and understanding for the rest of the world, can't extend the same to their fellow citizens?

And if "White Power" is bad; is "Black Power" good?

The nicest I can get about Katrina is the word: toxic. She sprays poison through her words. This is not acceptable coming from an editor of a national magazine.

Prayerfully, the students receiving such information would have the "knowledge and reason" to know that such material is toxic and leads to no "GOOD'.

Vandenheuvel is a dope who could not even name her own congressthing. She is a washed up old hippie who spouts Far Lefty tirades but cannot mingle with the "little people". Look at her fear of Glenn Beck. Oooooooh, the boogie man! she also looooves abortion on demand. I wonder if she performs them for fun?

Before we marched there was a man that came into the crowd and started yelling racists at us. He then proceeded to use profanity and yell louder. It was obvious he was trying to get a reaction, but no one paid attention to him and he finally went away. I didn't see one anti-gay sign, one racist sign nor at anytime did we chant "white Power". What a crackpot this Katrina is. Obama and his ilk want people to get fired up, well lies like this are doing it.

Sep 22, 2009

Having actually attended the 9/12 rally as opposed to the Nation Editor. I can say that there were many African American and Hispanic conservative speakers who were very warmly received by the crowd for the merit of their ideas not for the color of their skin. While its true that a large majority of the crowd was white its because demographically their are more white conservatives and the Tea Party movement is without a doubt a conservative movement.

This ability of the democrats to camouflage their own racism and hate by distorting and slandering republicans and making them the villains has worked in the past which is probably why this pathetic witch is trying the same ploys. But thanks to the internet, talk radio, and cable news people can find out more facts than the democrats would like them to know. To them, a well informed and educated electorate is a dangerous thing - something they can't control. No wonder they need to initiate "teaching guides" to indoctrinate the young. When will this end?!?

Well, on the bright side, The Nation's student outreach program is reputedly (according to Heuvel) running a deficit on the order of a million bucks, and in danger of shutting down. Gee, I wonder why?

I was there to document the march and I saw many Confederate flags, homophobic signs/people, and yes, a lot of racist people too.

I did hear "white power" from a lot of people.

Sep 22, 2009

Well I guess these lies will be believed by those like the other libs who have their heads in the sand. If there is any racism and/or bigotry, she is expressing it for the Left in her assessment of 9/12 march. Another lefty projecting their own philosophy on the conservative side.

Byron, I don't know why you attribute the quotes above to vanden Heuvel because the article was written by SEBASTIAN JONES.

Echo, I as there in front of the capitol and I saw 1 confederate flag by the reflecting pond and saw NO homophobic or racist signs. I certainly didn't hear any "White Power" shouts.
In a crowd that size (I'd say 400,000 ) you're going to get some bad apples, but I believe you went there with an agenda, so naturally you found it. Please go to zombie.com, if you want to see some "foul" liberal protesters.
Psst..I really believe you're a disgusting liberal liar

FYI - Paddyspig, the Confederate Flag was not and is not an "American" flag, it's the only flag in the world that actually represents the attempt to destroy the great nation of America through secession.

The people who fly it & revere it are traitors in the truest sense of the word - they actually worked towards and fought for the destruction of the American union.

Sorry pal - they ain't Americans. They're "Confederates" and would prefer to destroy America so they can have their own little country.

I saw snipets of the march on TV and lots of ugly signs and comments. Talking about lies--I wonder if any of the marchers still believe the lie for which we went to war in Iraq. Press ahead, Mr. President. You're greatly admired and respected by most Americans and the world.

Just ask the Washington DC police what they thought about us. We asked if they were having a difficult day? The police officers chuckled, "not with this group". They also informed us at noon that the police estimated that 1.2 million had already gathered and more were marching in. It is amazing that if a liberal is not winning they sling lies instead of facts. It is a sad commentary on the political group that is running the country, but hopefully not for long!

Folks, connect the dots. 1.) Radical leftists who hate America, 2.) Radical ideas that presume destroying things like the free market, 3.) Radicals destroying the family with divorce and homosexuality, 4.) ACORN / child prostitution. Get it? The ACORN scandal is not just a few bad apples. The whole radical left is presaged on destroying what is good in America, as per Saul Alinsky. These kind are united in their hatred of the things that make America great. The higher up do this through taking over private companies. The lower ones do this by encouraging prostitution and God know what else.

Sep 24, 2009

The official approximate count for the March was 1.7 MILLION. No arrests, peaceful. Although there was a couple of ACORN Lemmings who were run out of the March by police after trying to sell Don't Tread On Me Flags. So Mrs Heuvel, Before You cast your discontent in writing lies and misconceptions, get Your facts straight. You also failed to mention the 1000's of cities across the Nation who were also holding rallies about the corruption that couldn't make it to the DC March. So if You totaled all those cities up with the DC March the numbers would be much higher.
Also You forgot to mention NONE of the people marching was PAID to be there!!!! Unlike ACORN and SEUI who are paid with OUR MONEY! See We the People don't need no stinkin money funneled in from Tides and other so called community organizer groups. We are on to the Lies and Corruption. And Get Off The RACE CARD CRAP, Obama and Company are just PLAIN LIARS! Lies have no COLOR, No Race. Your Race Card has EXPIRED!

I was in D.C. on 9-12 as a participant.

This woman not only exaggerated, she had to have been hallucinating when she wrote her article. SHE IS A LIAR!

I really didn't know what to expect from the crowd when I went. I was truly
amazed at what I witnessed. I have spoken and written via email to many people what I witnessed. That was the most courteous, well behaved group I have ever been associated. It was also the largest mass of people I have ever seen. From the four corners of this country, most points in between, and Hawaii and Alaska they came—united against big government.

The politicos may not publicly acknowledge the huge mass of people there, but behind closed doors the rhetoric changes I assure you. NO TIME TO REST ON OUR LAURELS—stand up, let your voice be heard. You’ll be glad you did, I assure you.
