Lawmaker calls on Obama to fire official in gay sex ed controversy

By: Byron York

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King is calling on President Obama to fire gay activist Kevin Jennings, the controversial head of the Education Department's Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools. Although Jennings has come under heavy criticism from social conservatives in recent months, King is the first member of Congress to call for his ouster.

King says Jennings has no background in anti-drug work, and his experience in education has focused not on the issue of school safety but on introducing the topic of homosexuality into the classroom, including in elementary schools. "The totality of his life has been the promotion of homosexuality, and much of it within education," says King. "He has focused on nothing else during the last two decades, and that is not the focus that our schools need to be on."

The Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools was created by the Education Department in 2002 as part of its implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act. In the words of a Washington Post account from the time, the office was intended to "help prevent violence and drug and alcohol use, and foster good character and citizenship" among the nation's students.

Before joining the Education Department in May, Jennings ran the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, an organization he founded in 1990. In the words of its current executive director, the group's goal is "transforming K-12 schools" by working "to end the bullying, harassment and discrimination directed at LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered] people in our schools."

Recently Jennings expressed regret over an incident he described in a 1994 book, One Teacher in Ten: Gay and Lesbian Educators Tell Their Stories. Jennings wrote that in 1988, when he was a high school teacher, he was approached by a 15 year-old boy who said he had become involved with an older man. Instead of notifying the boy's parents or any authorities, Jennings instead offered the boy advice: "I hope you used a condom."

Critics accused Jennings of turning a blind eye to child abuse. In response, Jennings' defenders said the boy was 16 years old, not 15, suggesting that Jennings had no responsibility to protect him. Nevertheless, last week Jennings released a statement in which he said, "Twenty-one years later, I can see how I should have handled this situation differently. I should have asked for more information and consulted legal or medical authorities."

Jennings' critics have also pointed to a 1999 book, Queering Elementary Education, for which he wrote the foreword. The book's chapters include "Teaching Queerly: Some Elementary Propositions," "Why Discuss Sexuality in Elementary School?" and "Locating a Place for Gay and Lesbian Themes in Elementary Reading, Writing, and Talking." The book's cover includes lavish praise from former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, now a professor of education in Chicago, who recommends Queering Elementary Education "for anyone concerned with the healthy development of children and schools."

In addition, critics point to a number of projects run by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network which have brought overtly homosexual themes -- and sometimes discussion of specific sexual practices -- into the schools.

Although Rep. King says he is opposed to the bullying of anyone in schools, he also opposes conferring "special protected status" on any particular group. (Jennings and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network strongly support a federal anti-bullying bill, H.R. 2262, currently under consideration in the House, that specifically includes sexual orientation and "gender identity.") As for Jennings' other work, King calls it "a political movement. It's not about protecting kids, it's about promoting homosexuality and demanding public affirmation."

King says he plans to write a letter to President Obama about the Jennings matter, and he also expects other members of Congress to join him in calling for Jennings' removal.

At the moment, at least, Jennings appears to have the full backing of the White House. Asked about the controversy last week, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs referred reporters to a statement from Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who strongly supports Jennings. "Kevin Jennings has dedicated his professional career to promoting school safety," Duncan said in that statement. "He is uniquely qualified for his job and I'm honored to have him on our team."

Why is the government involved in this kind of stuff any way? I know - good intentions, but there are dozens if not hundreds of other programs that administer the same type of issues.
Education should be controlled at a local level. SHUT DOWN THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. We don't need hacks and legislators in DC telling us what to teach our children. And I bet 95% of parents - liberal and conservative alike - would agree.

...oh, and Mr. Jennings should be fired, and whoever hired him should be fired.

If Jennings and the boy in question were heterosexual, this would be a non-issue.

The RW extremist have been to get him since day one. This is just another gay witch hunt.

Jennings lavished praise on Harry Hay. Who is Harry Hay? A support of NAMBLA - the North American Man Boy Love Association. This group advocates sexual relations between grown men and under-aged boys. There is no place in the Obama Administration for a supporter of pedophilia. Jennings must go!

"Jennings' defenders said ...that Jennings had no responsibility to protect him." Protect: to shield from injury, damage, or destruction.

Jennings' defenders admitted that the homosexual life-style is injurious, damaging, and destructive.

Let's dub this guy the Polanski czar. You know the media will of course ignore this. See it's those evil conservatives behind it and they must not give in to their "hate," blah blah blah.

But when parents get word of the Polanski czar and this guys supporting a teen having sex with a man, it's going to be let's say, not pretty.

Praise Obama!

The issue surrounding Jennings seems to be that he support, and often advances, the civil rights of the GLBTI community. If that is the reason then none exists for his dismissal.

If, however, he is guilty of crimes not yet identified, then they may be grounds for dismissal. What crimes?

Advocating and supporting pedophilia may not be a crime but it should disqualify anyone from public service. Just because he, allegedly, has never engaged in such activity does not give him a free pass. Using that argument I can rightly commend Mussolini for his management skills, as long as I remain silent as to his other activities.

This entire administration is beyond ridiculous. Obama campaigned on "change", well we now have appointees who defy the standards of their appointed positions; Tax sec'y who owes/owed back taxes, obese Surgeon General, Educ. sec'y who should be tried for failure to report child abuse but wants to teach homosexuality to our youngest citizens, and worst of all, a couple int the White House who think they are King & Queen, NOY elected public officials.

JDoggg

Oct 5, 2009

Dale, you're right it would be a non-issue if Jennings was straight. Because he would've had relevant experience in school safety, law enforcement, drug abuse, etc... The purpose of Jennings appointment, like that of any of his other is for the Great One. This isn't about school safety, its about the Great One insulating himself from lowly public opinion with a bubble of tea parlor liberals, armchair activists, self-ascribed intellectuals, elitists, and other sycophants. Its time Congress put an end to this czar nonsense. Last time I checked the Constitution, the Senaate must confirm all Presidential appointments, not just some of them.

Dale said, "If Jennings and the boy in question were heterosexual, this would be a non-issue."

No, if the boy had been straight he would not have been having unprotected sex with a much older man he met IN THE RESTROOM.

If Jennings had been straight, he would have been shocked at the idea of a teenage boy having sex with a total stranger that he met IN THE RESTROOM.

Check the net for the background of the story. This story was all about sex in a public place, something that shocks normal people but is NO BIG DEAL for homosexuals.

THIS is what Jennings is trying to force on the public schools. He's just an activist for homosexuality, nothing more.

Kevin Jennings must go. It is bad enough that Obama has our kids singing his praises in the classroom but I do not want to have to worry every minute of every day about my grandkids getting educated (yeah right) under Obama. We certainly do not need to be teaching our kids that homosexuality is normal.

@Mike Konkel
Obama doesn't have kids "singing his praises in the classroom." Yes, there has been some singing along those lines, but Obama didn't have anything to do with it. It was the kids and teachers in those schools who are responsible.

"Check the net for the background of the story. This story was all about sex in a public place, something that shocks normal people but is NO BIG DEAL for homosexuals."

Especially the wide-stance, Christian conservative, Republican U.S. Senator type.

What people fail to point out is that this SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD "boy" was above the age of consent in his state. In fact, in some states, like Georgia, he would even be old enough to marry someone. It's funny how they don't mind trying someone at the age of 14 as an adult and putting them up for a potential death penalty sentence, but someone at 16 can't magically handle sex.

Sure, sex at 16 is stupid, but I'd hardly call it "pedophilic".

I think the people pushing this pedophilia advocacy accusation are really overblown. They should take their fingers out of their butt and focus on the real pedophiles in church robes and pastoral cloths.

Jennings - Just Another Pervert

Oct 5, 2009

@John - From your perspective pedophiles are okay as long as they are not members of the clergy. Jennings support of Hay is PUBLIC RECORD, PUBLIC!

Yup, the Communist Manifesto states pollute the schools. Homosexuality; pornography; cross dressing; drugs; alcohol; pedophilia; and once you have the kids; you take over the country...The next generation, got it? People have to demand that he be fired.

I wish a responsible teacher or other adult would have alerted my mom that my then 14-year-old brother was being molested by an older man at his jobsite. My brother was lonely, vulnerable having lost his dad at the age of 4. Twenty years later my precious brother died of AIDS. This Jennings monster must go.

Public School Administrator

Oct 7, 2009

The man is SICK. For those of you who think it is okay, you are unfit to be parents. Bottom line, he should have reported it but he didn't because he approves of it. Just so we get this straight, if a kid wants to pray in school, we tell him how wrong he is, but if he has sex with an adult in a public restroom we just tell him to use a condom and pat him on the back. That doesn't fly with anyone with a brain.
THIS is the ILLNESS of our country. WE need to get this crap straightened out and tell those on the far left to take a hike. To be clear, we certainly don't promote bullying or violence or discrimination. But let's face it, when a bunch of men with beards dress up like nuns and parade down the street, people are going to laugh. Most people don't care if you're gay, straight or other. Just keep it to yourself and keep your adult hands OFF of children no matter who you are! This administration is a joke but unfortunately this is not funny.

I cannot understand what Pres. Obama is thinking when he nominates such people as Kevin Jennings who are clearly so completely a wrong match for their job. Putting a radical advocate for promotion and exposure of homosexuality in the classroom, who fairly well encouraged a teenage student to continue an illicit relationship with a homosexual pedophile, and who has a positive view of the NAMBLA philosophy has no place being the "Safe Schools" Czar --- in fact, this man has no business being in any contact whatsoever with any students of any age. He clearly has dangerously irresponsible views on exposing students to graphic sexual matters, and has no problem doing so behind the backs of parents who do not share his extremist views.

The boy (now 24) issued a statement that 1. he was 16 at the time, and
2. He did not have sexual contact with the other guy, simply met him in a bus station when he was traveling by bus. Also, the "older" man was another gay person a few years older, but in his teens - a college kid going back to school.

Re: Harry Hay - he was NOT a member of NAMBLA. He did not advocate or support pedophilia. His supposed "support" of NAMBLA extended to protesting their exclusion from gay pride marches, etc.

I am appalled at the way facts are distorted and blown all out of proportion by some of the extremists who publish on the web and by media personnel like FOX, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.
