Leahy explains his "wise Latina" misquote, but the video shows...

In his opening questioning of Sonia Sotomayor, Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy substantially misquoted Sotomayor's famous "wise Latina" speech.  "You said that, quote, you 'would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would reach wise decisions…'" Leahy said to Sotomayor.  "So tell us, you've heard all of these charges and countercharges, the 'wise Latina' and on and on…tell us what's going on."

Leahy's version of Sotomayor's quote was not what Sotomayor actually said.  What she said, in her 2001 Berkeley speech was, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."  [Emphasis added.]

After the hearings were over Tuesday, I asked Leahy about the misquote. "I was doing it from memory," Leahy explained.  "But I knew that she would -- she stated exactly what she said, and the statement is in the record."  Leahy added that he did not consider Sotomayor's precise words very important; her response, he said, was much more critical.

That's Leahy's explanation.  But video of his question is available on YouTube, and it certainly appears that Leahy was reading from a text when he misquoted Sotomayor.  Perhaps Leahy was forming his question while looking at some other text, but there is no doubt he was looking at papers when he posed the question to Sotomayor. You can judge for yourself here

In my opinion, Senator Leahy follows a script written for him by the script writers of the Democrat Party. He has followed those scripts for so long he no longer knows how to formulate one of his own.

Again, one more time, if a Republican had done this during the Alito or Robert confirmation hearings it would have been front page news.

Come now, Mr. Leahy appears at times to be suffering from the opening salvo of Alzheimer's. I submit he likely doesn't remember what he has said from one time to the other.

What do you expect from "leaky Leahy?" He is a dishonorable man. In 1985, when he was Vice Chair of the Intel. Com. He leaked vital secrets to achieve political points. Would he not lie to do the same?

Pretty obvious that Mr. Leahy is the very type of "white male" she had in mind when she made her famous comments. On this account I'd have to agree with her.

Leahy is dishonest. He was very deceptive at the outset of the hearing talking about Estrada.

Looking at the video tape, it also is obvious that he is either reading a dishonest question or, more likely as I watch it, he saw the accurate quote in his written question and changed the words to make her look better. The Supreme Court insanely ruled that term limits were unconstitutional and Leahy is the type of dishonest politician we get forever in the Senate.

Leahy's reply is just not credible. Does he want us to believe that he couldn't get key phrase correct in the most controversial and critical (to the hearings) speech that Sotomayor has made. If he is not blatantly dishonest than he is a complete idiot.

Cheney was right. Leahy is the far end of the alimentary canal.

Leahy is a total snake - above and beyond routine politician sleeze. Its pretty clear to anyone who watches a couple of hours of the hearings on C-SPAN. I wouldn't trust Leahy to cut my grass.

I could respect a difference of philosophy, but I can't respect the routine dishonesty from these guys - Leahy, Schumer, Durbin, Kennedy - are all like this.

One of the things I most dislike about Hatch is that he is friendly to Leahy - rather than publicly calling him on this type of behavior.
