Last week House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that town-hall attendees critical of the Democratic health care makeover were "carrying swastikas and symbols like that" to meetings.  The next day, Rush Limbaugh responded at length on his radio program, saying, "I have always bristled when I hear people claim that conservatism gets close to Nazism.  It is liberalism that's the closest you can get to Nazism and socialism."

On "Meet the Press" this morning, host David Gregory played a brief clip of Limbaugh's monologue -- a sentence in which Limbaugh said, "There are far more similarities between Nancy Pelosi and Adolf Hitler than between these people showing up at town halls to protest a Hitler-like policy" -- and then asked guest David Brooks to comment.  "I hadn't seen the Rush Limbaugh thing," Brooks said.  "That is insane.  What he's saying is insane."

I asked Limbaugh for a reaction, and here is his answer:

Everyone seems to ignore that Pelosi started this, saying town hall participants were showing up with swastikas, etc. That's calling them Nazis, as Dick Durbin referred to our Gitmo interrogators from the Senate floor. I've been listening to the left compare George W. Bush to Hitler for eight years. I've been listening to Democrats and the left compare conservatism to Nazis my whole career. This time I responded.  In kind, by comparing the radical left policies of the Nazis to today's radical left leadership of the Democrat Party.  I'm not surprised they don't like it.

Don't look for anyone to back down in this particular fight.

I've listened to Limbaugh's analyses for years. His comparisons of the far-left liberal politicians, as well as the lefty wing-nuts such as Daily Kos and Huffington Post, are spot on.

He has been accused of being racist, sexist, homophobic, hypocritical on drugs because of his Oxycontin addiction, and yet I have never seen or heard ANY of this. What I have seen, and heard, from him is a total disregard for the opinions of the left-wing loons. In short, he is not "politically correct". Show me a conservative who believes in political correctness, and I'll show you someone who is indeed hypocritical, who has been intimidated by the liberals.

Gee, intimidation, that sounds like a Nazi tactic to me. So why is Limbaugh off-base comparing a movement that uses intimidation to reach its goals, with another movement that used intimidation to reach its goals 70 years ago?

I have heard accusations of him being racist; of him being homophobic; of him being

If Brooks responded simply based on what he was allowed to hear on Meet the Press -- with no context offered up as to Pelosi's original comment -- then he can at least claim some sort of 'Dowdifaction' of the comment on the part of NBC.

If he knew what Pelosi had said, and then attacked Limbaugh for his comment while ignoring Nancy's claims about the Obamacare protesters, then it sounds like Brooks is just sucking up to the Inside-the-Beltway/Upper West Side crowd in order to stay on the regular Washington-New York cocktail party circuit.

As usual, Rush is right....
Pelosi is the real Nazi here....her mantra should be "do as I say and not as I do."
Just her demaning the AirForce to be at here beck and call should tell everyone just exactly who she thinks she is.
She mixes us that gavel of hers with a crown of jewels.
Someone needs to tell her she is working for the little man..and not the other way around.

Hey, the reason the left hates Limbaugh, and also Coulter, is that they talk back to the left the way the left talks about and to conservatives. Do some homework, and you will find many similarities between leftism and National Socialism. They are part of the same group, Statists who seek control over every facet of our lives. Our crimes? We make Liberty the basis of our foundation, just like the founders. Every response to a leftist should include: Which party is the party of Slavery? Dems. Which party invented and backed Jim Crow laws for 100 years? Dems. Which party is the party of actual KKK? Dems. Which party seeks to suppress free speech? Dems. Which party views everything in terms of race and are the real racists? Dems. Keep hitting them between the eyes with this and if you need to, also add this: Which organization would not come out against Nazi aggression until the Nazis turned on the Soviets? USA Organized Labor, aka Unions.

Rush is a millionaire entertainer playing the common man, to a white male crowd that loves simple (and therefore extreme) views on complex problems. His faux anger is very much taken from the playbook of all extremist leaders: he has much in common with a radical Mullah as a skinhead Nazi. comparing him to a Hitler underestimates Hitler. All these radio right jocks are just richly paid for running sideshows for simpletons who prefer received hatred to thinking.

You have to remember here that Pelosi is known for throwing bombs. Throughout the Bush years, Pelosi was attacking. Prior to claiming Nazi's and swastikas were populating the movement against national health care, you claimed the CIA consistently lied to Congress. In both cases, she has had to back down. Pelosi is out of control. The fact she favors national health care is an excellent reason for opposing such.

...so I'm sure you can actually REFUTE what he said, Justin? I'm positive that since you're so much smarter than Rush is, you can show where he's lying and how no-one on the Left ever referred to Republicans or Conservatives as Nazis (much less them having done so for the entire last eight years)?

No, of course you can't. In fact, you just compared Rush to a Nazi yourself.

Good job discrediting your side, Justin. i didn't even have to- you did it all yourself.

DaveP,
I am always undecided when it comes to manifestly absurd posts like Justin's. Sometimes I just think it is better to leave them stand as what they are. We will win over the members of the younger generation with a higher than room temperature IQ and a facility for critical thinking. Anybody who couldn't instantly see though Justin's post is probably a hopeless member of the 35%

Rick Caird

Aug 9, 2009

Justin, above, is completely irrelevant, too. Nowhere was Rush Limbaugh compared to a Nazi, but the illiterate Justin seems to think that is the topic.

It is also true that fascism is a far left, socialistic philosophy. Even the name Nazi comes from "National Socialist German Workers’ Party". It is difficult to argue that a party that uses socialist in its name and advocates government control of industry is not socialist. Of course, Justin is free to try, but it is doubtful he is really up to it.

Greg

Aug 9, 2009

No, Rush is not right on this at all - as if anyone should be surprised.

Several people from both sides of the aisle, including Pelosi, remarked that right wing protesters were carrying signs with swastikas as a way of referring to Obama as Hitler. No one said the protesters themselves were Nazis.

They stated a FACT, as has been proven repeatedly on video and in photos.

Or do Rush fans not accept facts?

I encourage everyone interested in the history of the left to get a copy of "Liberal Fascism," by Jonah Goldberg.

Among other things, you'll find how "fascist" went from being a proud label of the left to being an epithet.

Leftist weeds flourish best in a good thick bed of ignorance. Goldberg's book is a sort of herbicide.

Notice how progressive Democrats never seem appalled when dissenters use the Hammer & Sickle sign when they protest Obamacare?

I wonder if the reason why they never object to Communists Hammer $ Sickle symbol because Democrats believe anyone right of Stalin is the Nazi; and everyone knows that Statist like Stalin and Hitler hate Liberty which is why they hate America's founding Conservative principles.

Fake outrage? There is legitimate outrage now..people are fed up with the "let them eat cake" attitude of the far left politicians!

Rush is right!

Just who do Pelosi, Reid and others think they are? They are NOT, above any of us, they are NOT royalty...their eliticism makes me ill, they use their voters to get what they want, then when the voter isn't listening, they trash them...just like we hear comments from the far left: "hillbilly", "redneck", "hick", "idiot", ...then when one offers up a fact with a link to that fact...their supporters are so full of hate and so lazy they won't bother to read it.

Research is imperative when we elect someone now....it's sad we have so many that have been conned by politicians!

Really?? I saw one frame from one video with one lonely protester who had a sign with what appeared to be the SS symbol on it. Not even a swastika. Is that the source of your assertions of "fact"?

If these protests really were astroturfed, a pro would have spotted and removed that sign immediately. A spontaneous demonstration cannot control who shows up. I am sure you are ready to defend every nutbag that ever showed up to an Obama rally?

Articles of the Nazi faith:

*Religious reverence for the environment
*Rabid anti-tobacco
*Unions as sock-puppets of the government
*Speech codes
*Big rallies (with Greek columns, even)
*Organising "the youth"
*Informing on "subversives"
*Demonising one or more demographic groups
*Responding to argument with violence

I know which side of the aisle most closely replicates those passions and operating procedures.

If you've a long enough memory, you'll recall William F. Buckley's response to Gore Vidal when he was called a crypto-Nazi. It is a triumph of PR that people do not regard National Socialism as a form of SOCIALISM. When I ask myself "What Would Adolph Do?" the answer is More government, not Less government.

Mr. Brooks' assertion of insanity may fit the media template, but it doesn't fit my understanding of Fascism. Perhaps Mr. Brooks would benefit from perusing Jonah Goldberg's book "Liberal Fascism."

The Tea Parties are a response to the statist inclinations of both parties. What's "insane" is to think that Mr. Brooks is anything but a statist shill.

Google 'Bush Nazi' and you get 5.48 million hits. Google 'Bush Hitler' and you get 6.94 million hits.

If the right does it, it's horrible...but if the left, who've been doing this for years do it, it's 'patriotic dissent'? Free speech? Hyperbole to make a political point? But the conservatives must just be insane?

The hypocrisy is so thick, massive and blatant, who can do anything except mock the hell out of it? Nancy Pelosi is a self-absorbed tool of epic proportions. To be insulted by anything she says is actually a complement for thinking people. And for the media to take it as a credible comment reveals again, just how in the bag they are for left.

The left should be embarrassed.

David Brooks is an incipient, dandified, elitist, jackass. That's been true for quite some time. Typical that Gregory would leave out context when quoting Rush, and typical of NY Slimes' Brooks to take the bait and not respond to the whole contextualized quote, because Brooks is too "special" to deign to listen to Rush or ask if the quote is presenting the whole context. Anyone who has read, analyzed, and comprehended the health care proposals currently under consideration before the Senate and House understands where the comparison points are.

Anyone who has read, analyzed, and comprehended the writings of John Holdren, Cass Sunstein, and Ezekiel Emanuel regarding health care knows where the comparison points are.

Rush is right, as usual.

Couple of things:

The post which said Rush is a rich man playing common man to white male audience. Conservativism doesn't have a category for class envy. We don't normally demonize someone with a well paying job who strikes it rich. This is the American dream. He "plays" an American who understands political philosophy and uses humor, many times, to relay that information.
Also, most of his audience, believe it or not, are stay at home moms like myself, or those who are in their cars at work. So, you tell me how working men can find time to listen to him three hours a day?

Now she and Stony Hoyer in an op-ed are ccalling "non-compliant" Americans unpatrotic because they challenge the Agenda, the 5-year plan of Zero. Americans recognize Zero's proposal as a Big Leap Backward!

Liberals, Conservatives EXTREMISTS ALL

Aug 10, 2009

ATTENTION FOLKS: the reason why these arguments so fluidly vacillate from left to right (or vice versa) is that HITLER was an extremist... BOTH sides have reasons to point fingers!

What you fail to realize is that the American People have demonstrated that we will move to one side or the other occasionally, but we usually - SENSIBLY - stay moderate! Just look at the last election cycle. Look at the increased prominence of the "Blue Dog Democrats." Look at the polls.

We don't need rhetorical battles between liberals and conservatives. We need common sense, which leads from the middle ground and the high ground.

the essence of rush's statement is this: i'm tired of being compared to a nazi, so i did a little quid pro quo. a little tit for tat. a little pee wee herman "i know you are, but what am i."

there is no substance to his critique other than "they said it first!'

and this is the trouble i have with the whole debate. it's just so much posturing on both sides of the aisle. there is very little true dialogue. there is very little appeal to critical thinking. there is little active listening. there is only the idea that whoever shouts the loudest or has the last word wins the argument. and if that is, indeed, who wins, then mr. limbaugh, politics aside, will no doubt emerge victorious.

The Nazi party came from the ultra conservative end of german politics, not the liberal side. They were facists, not socialists. Just because they used socialist in their title didn't mean they were actually socialists. They rose as a reaction to immigration in their country and Hitler's platform was one of getting back to a "pure" Germany. He played on people's fears that they were losing their country to people who were "other". That sounds an awful lot like what is happening here, but it's not the liberals who are upset about diversity. And Patrick Carroll above mentioned Liberal Facsism by Jonah Goldberg....I read it....if you know anything about history you will realize that Mr. Goldberg is quite a liar. He twists facts until they are no longer facts. First read actual history and know the background and then you can read his opinion book and put it into true historic context.

A few commenters seem ignorant of history. Here is the Nazi platform of 1920: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/25points.html

Nazis were socialists. It was the National Socialist Party -- "socialist" was in their name. Their platform was socialist. What part of this don't you understand?

For an even more thorough understanding, read Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism".

So Rush is saying he's no better than Pelosi? If she jumps off a bridge, will he jump too? "Pelosi started this" sounds like preschoolers on the playground

Aug 10, 2009

This is spot on. Wow, the queen Pelosi is so far out of touch it is tooooooo scary to think she is 3rd in line to the presidency, Rush is correct....the left is very close to becoming the all powerful party of "do as I say" not "as I do". The extreme left, Pelosi, Reid, etc., etc. have taken over the democratic party. Keep talking Nancy, Harry and all you far out radicals. David Brooks is still expecting wonderful things to happen from the "one". Wait on David....you too are out of touch!

Liberal Fascism, The Real George Washington, and The 5,000 Year Leap are books everyone should read. Forget the argument about swastikas and get ready to march on Washington on 09/12. It would be great if we all were of the same opinion and there was no need for political parties.

Aug 10, 2009

Many are missing the real point.....Rush is not an elected offical but Pelosi is "elected". Rush refered to Pelosi and the Democratic Party as Nazis because of the method by which they are trying to RULE. Pelosi, an elected person must respect the input of American voters and should not be calling them Nazis for voicing their opinion. She does not own the American people...she was elected to represent them. Rush is right to draw attention to a representative or a Party of the people that thinks they are above their elected job and no longer need to listen to the people and tries to shut them up by calling them Nazis.

Where is the investigative reporting that we used to have? Rush is a political entertainer and pelosi is third in line for the presidency. She is way out of line. Rush was right to call her on it. Now he's the copeer of Mark Shields of the garbagebag designer suits and the house-Conservative (insulting reference to pre-Bellum slave owners intended) of PBS.

Would someone explain why we should have so much faith in Obama, Pelosi and Reid to run our health care system. Where is their track record of having a clue. Why don't we just turn over our grocery stores and restaurants over to them too. Food is more important than health care. I want to go to McDonald's, pay a $5.00 co-pay and then get whatever I want. That will bring food prices down. Oh thatts right. The restaurant industrie does not have run away inflation like health care. They control costs with the free markets. Those Capitalists Pigs!

On the left/right political spectrum, Communism is far left, Fascism is far right.
Hiter misnamed his party socialist to gain more acceptance, as Socialism was seen as a good thing. Just because he called it that doesn't mean it was. Our gov't does the same thing: Bush's "No child left behind" leaves children behind; his "clear skies" initiative allowed more pollution and the "patriot act" is anything but patriotic.
Rush Limbaugh is a liar, but he knows his fans are ignorant and love him for his lies.

The plans and constructive arguments that "have he put together" are simple and time tested. Freedom and liberty. The chance to be the best you can be. The principles and ideas that have shaped this country.
Not the over reaching and inept hand of the central government.

OldUncleDave, you are one sad case. So let me get this right; If you are a fan of Limbaugh who encourges self reliance and freedom, you are ignorant. However, if you want the government to take care of you, you are an intelectual? Am I getting that right OldUncleDave. Well if you are so smart, why do you need the Govt to take care of you. Why don't you figure it out on your own? It seems to me, that the ignorant Limbaugh groupies would need the Govt., and you elitest would be able to figure life out on your own without King Obama and Queen Pelosi.

Aug 10, 2009

Those of you who call Rush a liar don't understand what we conservatives are all about. We know he's rich and we don't care because the possibilities are the same for all of us. Hardworking people don't want government in their face and that's where the left is a problem for us. If Rush was a liar he would not have the audience he has, especially me. I see people make comments about rednecks of which I am proud to be one. The term comes from farmers working in the field with horses, they got their hands on the plow handles and the reins are held with their necks making a red mark or burn. I am also a union HVAC service person and now I have to pay hundreds of dollars to get licences to do my work. This is good for 2 years only. Those of you on the left, don't think that we are going to take this government intrusion sitting down! David Brooks certainly does not speak for me.

Aug 10, 2009

If anyone has any doubt about which side is right in calling the other fascist or Nazi,(an abbreviation of National Socialism)should read Jonah Golberg's book "Liberal Fascism." It is a clear eyed and frightening look at what is at the core, totalitarianism and the (faulty) reasons "progressive" politicians seek it. The book has a list of what NYC council members have recently sought to ban. Scary!

Rush is representative of basic American people who share the common belief in what the country was founded on, and for. Anyone who takes the opposing view of the founders, as put forth in the constitution of 1776, is not a patriot, and in my opinion an idiot.IF you agree with any other form of government, then get there as fast as you can. Why is it that when people who come to a common conclusion based on evaluating the facts they get labeled as nutjobs and lemmings? If we look skyward and see stormclouds, we all say, "Looks like a storm coming." So why is it the Liberals cannot fathom the fact that we who stand against them can and have come to our own conclusions, and gather as patriots to oppose what we see as a common enemy? I'm beginning to feel like a Son of Liberty at a Tory convention! As for Justin, et al. when you're ready for a factual, civil debate of the issues minus the 'conservophobia' just let us know. I LOVE how "thinking" liberals result to name-calling when they run out of intellectual capital. Calling conservatives "skin heads" and claiming tha only "white men" listen to Rush, simply ignores the facts, something I've come to expect from emotional liberal anti-intellectuals. Projection is their favorite psychological defense...look it up libs...or, better yet, call me a racist...its easier than using your BRAINS. Rush is right...libs in a truly intellectual debate, turn completely HILARIOUS, in their sputtering, intellectually vaccuous drivel...resorting to name calling...to them, I have only one response, one they'll actually understand:

"I know YOU ARE, but WHAT AM I (infinity)"

Jim in Cleveland

Aug 11, 2009

I want to second the commentary by Nick in Virginia - about the 3rd comment on Aug 9. I am with Limbaugh. I will further state that it is an indication that David Brooks is beholden to his liberal audience that he could come up with nothing more intelligent and nuanced than 'that is insane.' Had he considered Limbaugh's remarks seriously, he would see that a) he was rightly sticking up for those who were speaking their minds, and b) he was rightly observing that Nazism is based in socialism -- a formulation that, because it requires a monolithic program for an individualistic population, is necessarily totalitarian in its fullest expression. Pelosi's liberalism is not quite socialism's fullest expression, but it is on the path, and not far away either.

Gino McMaster

Why can't those sniveling liberals see that everything Rush says is true. If he says it, then by definition it must be true. Any opposing him must be wrong. Are we really that much smarter than the libs? We're the best, aren't we?

Brian P.

Aug 11, 2009

I love the comment by someone named, Justin, on Aug. 8th referring to Rush's audience as 'simpletons who prefer received hatred to thinking' and comparing him to Hitler. You can always tell when you have credibility when the response resorts to insults and name calling instead of actual content. It costs how much to listen to Rush's show?...free. Who is forced to listen to it?....nobody. Who is Rush forcing to pay him?....nobody.

In contrast, who is trying to force trillions in oppressive taxation on our children and grand children and tell us we're not allowed to voice opposition to it? Who is calling on people to report opposition to the White House? Their are some similarities to Hitler, but it ain't Rush.

Trapped in Socialist/Fascist Europe--APF

Aug 11, 2009

Saying that Fascism is the extreme right just belies an absolute lack of intelectual honesty. Fascist are statists as are Communists and Socialists. They believe in a large, heavy-handed government to solve all the "problems" of society. The trully intelectually honest person would have to admit the the REAL left-right scale has the Statists (i.e., Communist, Socialist, Fascist, Enviro-wackos, etc.) on the left and on the very extreme right the Anarchists. That is All-powerful Government on one end of the Spectrum and NO Goverment on the other. Now for the TRUTH that is hardest for the wackos to swallow: American Conservitism IS the MIDDLE!!! The tenets of American Conservatism are a small and EFFICIENT/EFFECTIVE government that respects the rights and liberties of the individual. That is neither Statist nor Anarchist--it's in the middle.

Luke Cato

Aug 11, 2009

David Brooks, a generally nice, thoughtful, intelligent, slightly-right-of-left-of-center opinionist, frequently suffers from a distinct lack of vertebral calcification, leading him to parrot whatever the media offers under the rubric of "conventional wisdom". Hence, any comparison of the Left to Nazis, fascism, etc., is obviously absurd, because, well, everyone he knows voted for McGovern.

Sure, Rush Limbaugh is as much entertainer as opinionator, but he's often closer to unvarnished truth than many--even on the right--care to admit. And here he's dead on.

Trapped in Socialist/Fascist Europe--APF

Aug 11, 2009

The lie of the left is that fascism is the extreme right. Fascism, Socialism, Communism and Enviro-wackism are all ideologies which require the State to control the population. Key word is control. The TRUE extreme right is Anarchy--the absence of Government. Left = State Control of the People. Right = Individuals control themselves. Now for the part that REALLY wacks out the lefties: American Conservatism is the REAL CENTER!!! American Conservatism is for a RIGHT-SIZED government only sufficiently large enough to guarantee the rights, liberties and security of the individual.

Rush-Tradamus is "spot-on" yet again. As Ms. Ann Coulter says Liberals are "soft against Terrorists, yet STRONG against babies". 45 million dead American babies since 73, sounds like a Holocaust to me.(Roe V. Wade) de Obama's Health Care Proposal would jeopardize the old and the sick, a despotic "bait and switch" tactic to simply gain a stronger hold to the reigns of power by giving millions of illegal aliens rights they have NOT earned. By adding millions of new patients into our current system with its fixed number of doctors would seriously dilute the quality and quantity of the services rendered. Health care would have to be rationed. Unless President Hussein Obama is going to import Doctors from his amigos Raul and Fidel Castro?

I agree that Daily Kos is left-wing nutty. I also think that Rush Limbaugh is right-wing nutty. Why can't people just respectfully speak to each other and listen to other points of view without all the vile spewing that I see from both Daily Kos and Rush Limbaugh. Anyone who screams at other people in a meeting, on the radio, on the internet, etc. should be ashamed of themselves. That is not the way to behave, and I'll bet you anything your mothers taught you better. It doesn't matter that "the left did it!!" So what. Grow up.

Trapped in Socialist/Fascist Europe--APF

Has anybody noticed the constant effort of the leftist loons to attack the messenger (Rush) rather than debate the message?
Fascism and Nazis are just more of the Leftist "same ole, same ole".

American Conservatism is the reasoned and thought out center between "All-powerful-Government" and "all-hell-breaks-loose-Anarchy".

The loons try to rule but we aren't decieved!!

Reason

Aug 12, 2009

As always seems to be the case in recent memory, reasoned, intelligent postings become increasingly polluted by serial posters who hurl around meaningless, irrational, ad hominem attacks on those who hold differing viewpoints. Hiding behind an electronic forum and anonymously calling fellow citizens "idiots," "morons," "pill poppers," (etc.) seem to be de rigueur for some. But would these people have the guts to say these things to our faces, though? That's what separates the men from the boys. And that's why I can unemotionally write off everything they will say as unworthy of my time. Gotta go -- Rush is almost over and I'd like to take in some intelligent thinking before lunch is over!

I know you're not worried about that, because you have that hefty healtcare policy. Shut up or put up. The people in Southesst Mo need help and they need it badly. Help them instead of running your mouth about the folks that are already taken care of. Help your own, then you'll be doing your part and seeing that the helpless people in Cape Girardeau, Mo and surrounding towns get the help they need. You're not helping them by bassing the folks in Washington and the White House. Make yourself useful. Help! and then maybe you can have a say about who is doing what and to whom.

Rush is logical - articulate, - effective - and not self serving like the leftist loonatics in charge.

The best way to help the Southeast Missourians is, if they need help, should be able to get it from leftist loons, right? The fact is, that conservatives outgive liberals by a factor of more than 7 to 1. The only way leftists give is with other peoples money forcibly collected by tax law.

JR-"Google Bush Hitler you get 6.9 million hits"
Google Obama hitler you get 11 million hits and he's only been in office eight months.
By the way fascism included radical nationalism and supported the existence of a powerful military. "This is the greatest nation on earth" implies we're better than everyone else which was the goal of aryanism. We also spend more money than the rest of the world combined by a wide margin and we haven't been shy about using it and the CIA. I support a strong standing army but that's a little overkill. We're already fascists.
Is it fair to compare conservatives to nazis? no, neither is it fair to compare liberals.
By the way protesters have been carrying swastikas, do a google image search before you say they aren't.
Finally Rush is one of the craziest people I've ever heard, he's against college, thinks exercise is bad for you and supports using nuclear weapons. He's a plague upon the Republican party.

Aug 30, 2009

Hahaha. I understand Rush has lost weight again. He also lost weight when he became a drug addict. Maybe his new diet plan is the old OxyContin plan again.
