Obama's Science Czar: Traditional family is obsolete, punish large families

By: David Freddoso

In this Oct. 17, 2007 file photo, John Holdren, professor of Environmental Science and Public Policy in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University, speaks at the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy presentations in Pittsburgh. (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic, File)

President Obama's Science Czar, John Holdren, took a controversial and amoral approach to the science of population by recommending mass compulsory sterilization and even forced abortion (and/or forced marriages) under certain circumstances. His 1977 tome, Ecoscience, which he co-authored with Paul and Anne Ehrlich, also displays a revealing disregard for the institution of the traditional human family.

Holdren and the Ehrlichs write:

Radical changes in family structure and relationships are inevitable, whether population control is instituted or not. Inaction, attended by a steady deterioration in living conditions for the poor majority, will bring changes everywhere that no one could consider beneficial. Thus, it is beside the point to object to population-control measures simply on the grounds that they might change the social structure or family relationships.

Holdren, with a blithe “of course,” encourages government to wage an effective war on the family in America. It begins with the abolition of “pronatalist” policies and continues with their complete reversal:

As United States taxpayers know, income tax laws have long implicitly encouraged marriage and childbearing...Such a pronatalist bias of course is no longer appropriate. In countries that are affluent enough for the majority of citizens to pay taxes, tax laws could be adjusted to favor (instead of penalize) single people, working wives, and small families. Other tax measures might also include high marriage fees, taxes on luxury baby goods and toys, and removal of family allowances where they exist. Other possibilities include the limitation of maternal or educational benefits to two children per family.

Holdren notes that some of these proposals “have the potential disadvantage of heavily penalizing children (and in the long run society as well).” This is not a disqualifier, though, as long as the proposals are “carefully adjusted to avoid denying at least minimum care for poor families, regardless of the number of children they may have.” Even here, the objection is practical, not ethical. It's fine to level stiff penalties against those who choose families and children, but not to the point that this policy exacerbates the original problem (unwanted children, living in squalor) that population control purports to combat.

Some Americans might cite the Founding Fathers and argue that a government whose policy is to make war on the family in the name of science has clearly overstepped its mandate. That was not the opinion expressed by John Holdren, the man President Obama has put in charge in the nation's science policy.

Anyone who has taken even a cursory look at this book would realize that nowhere in it does Dr. Holdren "recommend" the dire measures described, and it is highly irresponsible of you, David, to accuse him of that. It is a textbook that describes the many approaches to limiting population that others have proposed or studied. Dr. Holdren and the other authors make very clear they do not endorse coercive approaches.

Holdren absolutely advocates these positions as a way to avoid the "population bomb". He is a completely insane.

In a world where countries like Russia and Italy are in terminal population decline, it would seem that Holdren would have the same happen in these United States. Just another priest bowing at the temple of Eugenics.

Rick Weiss: "Ecoscience" discusses measures taken in various countries, but it also does indeed make many recommendations and suggestions, weighing and judging the merits of various policies like the ones identified in this post and in the post from last night (forced abortion/marriage for single mothers, compulsory sterilization, etc). Recommendations abound within the text, both positive and negative. (For example, the authors, on grounds of practicality, recommend against putting sterilizing agents in drinking water -- but they do take the idea seriously). This statement quoted above is just one example of many: "Such a pronatalist bias of course is no longer appropriate." There is no other way to read that except as a policy recommendation.

Just the fact that this man has even PONDERED population control is truely scary! To even discuss the fact that these possibilities COULD exist and to know that this is a man Obama trusts is SICKENING!

Dictatorship is not a good discription of Obama and his cronies ... he is a Communist/Marxist who is pressing our country to change, change, change QUICKLY!

America's problem??? I truely believe that our citizens are suprised by this President who is changing policies so quickly ... they don't know what the heck is going on! American's have got to get off their Lazy Butt's and stand up to this new administration ... aaa...it is just fustrating that we have allowed this man to come and overtake our lives with Czar's, Universal Health Care and all the other crap ... it's our fault and WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Ziv Zulander

Jul 15, 2009

Fool. Taxation IS a coercive measure. Jartifsky is right. To even consider these policies is sickness. America has no population problem, we're right where we should be, 2.1. This man Holdren, isn't a scientist, but a monster.

Scary. Very scary. A [mainly] corrupt cabinet including; the new Surgeon General who has ties with an 'interesting' organization, 'Turbo Tax Cheat' Timmy, eugenicist Holdren- a perfect compliment to late-term abortion fan Sebillius- which compliments the partial-birth 'leave 'em to die' resident of 1600 PA Ave, anti-nuke, sensible utilization of US resources Chu. The list goes on, and on, and on... The lesson is that all US citizens need to pay attention at the local, state, and national level; carefully scrutinizing a candidates qualifications, experience, and long-stated opinions on issues.

I don't care what anyone says. Right wing, left wing, they are all pretty much the same at the moment. There is only one possible outcome if we continue down this path of ideology. Revolution. Don't believe me? Well, when it comes, and it will, you will at some point remember this little blurb on a website. The stage is set for it, now all that's left is for the actors to wake up, and when they do, well, they will be pretty pissed off.

This is all about Eugenics. If you read State Department memorandum 200 AKA National Security Study Memorandum 200, They were green lighting the Depopulation of third world countries. This is bipartisan. Bush Sr. was the one who got China to sign on to the "one child policy". No look at china. Many of the girls get aborted, sent to the sex industry or sold to America couples who can't have childred because they have been sterilized by toxins in the food and water. This book discribes what they are already doing. The Fluoride in the water is a cover for other deadly chemicals that they put in the water. Fluoride was put in the water in Russian and Nazi concentration camps. It causes, bone cancer, apathy, lowers sperm count, lowers IQ and other health issues.

I love it.. The world is in free fall, people are going hungry and jobless. Americans are in tent cities and people who thought they could retire have been wiped out and are going back to work..

The government can't seem to do anything to remedy this situation. In fact, they don't even seem to care.

No.. Instead they're going to SAVE THE WORLD! From everything! Everything from overpopulation to global warming!

Way to go guys.. That's why we elected you! Bravo!

The problem being that he is absolutely right? The world is overpopulated, we can either take a responsible approach to curbing reproduction, or we can satisfy world leader's dreams of grandeur with famine, depression, and global wars. There are very few people who can afford kids right now, not many of them are actually smart enough to not have them. Let's not give in to our primitive urges.

Sincerely,

I'm all for population control. Too many humans already. Global resources are in severe decline worldwide. Environmental destruction and degradation are causing huge disruptions to the global ecosytems. This is all directly related to population.

There are not too many people in the world. This is Pseudo-science put out there by Zero growth ECO Gaia Nazi's who are financed by the same people who founded Hitler, Stalin, PolPot and many other of the worlds dictors. These 3rd world countries that look to big for their land mass are due to lack of 1st world infrastructure. If someone went to New York City and their were no Subways, or buses and most of the food was grown locally, you would say that New York has too many people. This is the biggest excuse people use to justify exterminating or sterilizing people and those same people will not sterilize themselves.

These bankers and Elite Eugenic financiers like Bill and Melida Gates and and Bill Gates father who is one of the biggest heads of Planned ParentHood are the biggest producers of death on this plant. Eugenics is about total control over people who they see as inferior to them and people who are a threat to them which is any one who is not depedent on the system and intelligent. That is why Autism, Cancer, Diabetes, obesity, WAR, depression, death from war, abortion, is rising massivly. These people run the big univeristies, media, the military, big pharma, big chemical, and they get you distracted by the two party system when they are both financed by the same people. When we get tired of the Democrats, we put in Republicans, back and forth, back and forth, never seeing the real power that controls the government.

In addition to punishing large families, what about reducing the benefits for families revolving around single mothers? Just because some women can afford to spend monies to raise an adopted child or bear a child out of wedlock (esp IVF), what about the societal and psychological toll on those children and the next generation who don't have two role models to model the basic division of life?

Suck it up. Get over it. Shut up. And put up.

That's how women talk to men getting worked over in divorce court. That's how us men are going to talk to you women as you discover 'feminism' was about population control. A way to make sure you wouldn't have 'too many babies'.

Eugenics is nothing new. These types of policies were the norm in the United States from the 1920's
until fairly recently. In fact, our Eugenics program

Anyone who travels away from any large city or even a small town notices quickly the vast expanses of open uninhabited land.

Even in china there is nothing but open landscapes away from every city or village. Populations will always have their own natural dynamics which dictate growth and contraction.

Try Russia, Germany and others which are complaining about negative population growth rates. I say we move all the overpopulating people over to these countries. It will solve everyone's problems.

Some_Guy you are truly a moron, just the kind of usefull idiot that the powers that be love. The only population problem in America is the one that is being created by over immigration both illegal and legal. Nor is there a population problem that does not include the words "negative birth rate or immigration" in the rest of the developed world. There is a population problem however in the third and developing world, but cutting our own populations is never going to solve it as the developing world irresponsibly uses the developed world as a safety valve for their overpopulation. Killing ourselves is a foolish solution to World population problems that would only be embraced by mad men or those with an agenda. That agenda is clearly to destroy western civilization and the freeman class and replace it with a Marxist utopia of politco and serfs.

Jul 16, 2009

What_Population_Problem you are an even bigger moron that Some_guy. What you are advocating is genocide as defined by the United Nations. The systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, cultural, political, or ethnic group. If you flood nations with low birhrates with foreign people, what you are in effect doing is facilitating genocide. It is what the Han Chinese are currently doing to Uighurs and Tibetians. What Europe is doing to itself with Muslim immigration from north Africa and the middle east, and what the United States is doing to itself to a lesser extent with allowing illegal immigration to go unchecked.

The constitution says nothing about the wages of the individual being taxed. Only when the private corporation named the federal reserve came into being, owned ultimately by foreign bankers, were the people's wages taxed, to pay these private bankers interest to print up their notes, which ONLY CONGRESS has the power to do (AT NO INTEREST TO THE PEOPLE). They then formed their strong arm collection service, the IRS, to force recalcitrants to pay said taxes by force.

What a sweet deal. No wonder they don't want to be audited.

The Czar should do us all a favor and castrate himself so he cannot reproduce any spawn like himself.

This is -exactly- the kind of guy we need as a science advisor. He considers everything, and doesn't let tradition and morality get in the way of what options he considers. Deciding what policies to implement is the job of our elected officials: the president and congressmen. Don't be afraid to consider things outside your little morality box; let science do its job! I think you're all missing the point. Science czar? Or for that matter any czar? Where in the constitution does this position come from? When did Holdren, (or any other czar), go before Congress for vetting? Czars are shadow government outside of the checks and balances. As Glenn Beck oft says, "Watch the other hand...". Don't get caught in the minutia, understand the bigger issue. Czars, sane (or in this case insane), are unconstitutional.

Good words,"WATCH THE OTHER HAND!! It doesn't matter who the czar is, why do we have czars in the first place, to create confusion, smoke and mirrors?! The more chaos the pols can create, the less likely WE THE PEOPLE are to notice that sword hanging over our heads. Wake up America!!

According to this article, the man's book makes two statements:

1) The world is over-populated.

2) The government should therefore stop subsidizing children.

Maybe you agree with #1, maybe you don't. Either way, if ANY of you were true small-government conservatives, you would agree with #2.

This article fails to mention the most important info; covert poisoning of the water and food supply by eugenicists. And this isn't about liberals/conservatives; this is a huge agenda that is supported by the forces that control both parties.

It only makes sense that humans take some intelligent measures with regards to their breeding practices.
Let's face it, not every individual is worthy of procreation, everyone who has posted knows at least five or six people offhand.
I am not advocating rounding folks and exterminating them, and neither is the author, but he is advocating a gradual approach through coercive measures to change the overall human condition for the better.
the only problem with this however, is that humans are ultimately by nature corrupt, and those with power regardless of their genetic superiority will no doubt exploit individuals in not so favorable positions. When I hear logic such as Holdren, the scientist in me is delighted at the possibility of genetic perfection it offers, but the human in me knows all to well, that it will ultimately amount to a mired massacre as a result of human nature.

Oh, and all persons convicted of murder, rape, or molestion of any form should be automatically castrated or sterilized, preferably the former. What possible purpose could there be for allowing individuals such as these to procreate and walk around with their balls intact to seed the Earth and muddy the gene pool? I hope Holdren reads this.

Obama and Bush are two sides of the same coin. One side calls for big families, the other suggests population control. Levers are pulled, the media prints, the workers fight amongst themselves. This is all out in the open. It's written on the Georgia guidestones.

This man is another blatantly obvious Socialist in a string of Socialist appointments by our Socialist El Presidente Obama. Ecoscience? WTH is that?
Lacking any formal education in the stuff myself, I can deduce it to be crap science. Whose place is it (in government, especially) to even suggest controlling family size? If a married couple (man & woman) decide to have a gazillion youngsters or none - it's THEIR business and not government and for sure not the business or within the purview of some Ecoscience yahoo.
Those of you with still functioning brain cells should realize the gravity and scope of what this article says. In essence, the Government wants to control your efforts to "go forth and replenish the earth." This is dangerous, dangerous, and dangerous!
We should all be saying: Attention Government (regardless of level) STAY THE HELL OUT OF OUR LIVES! The less government the better.

That's the most ridiculous thing I;ve heard in the last 10 years.

First, anybody who thinks that the Chinese are going to listen to anybody about their internal affairs, is not thinking clearly.

Second, China has had a "1 child" policy for a long time - since 1979. That's when Jimmy Carter was President.

I also note that you're still following the "Communist Plot water fluoridation" thing.

Combining "In countries that are affluent enough for the majority of citizens to pay taxes, tax laws could be adjusted to favor (instead of penalize) single people, working wives, and small families. Other tax measures might also include high marriage fees, ... and removal of family allowances where they exist. Other possibilities include the limitation of maternal or educational benefits to two children per family." and "...the proposals are “carefully adjusted to avoid denying at least minimum care for poor families, regardless of the number of children they may have.”, the developed world turns into Africa.

This whole overpopulation thing has gone to extremes! Why does the matter have to go to "murder" before people wise up? Caution! Putting sterilization chemicals into the public water supply may very well kill more than babies! This is a very death oriented world and it is really a scary thing!!!!!Kind of the Holocaust mentality!

The world is overpopulated? You can fit the worlds population into a city twice the size of Calgary. The birth rates in most of the world have decreased below 2.1. Maybe we should be looking at the Muslims with birthrates of 8.1.

Who in their right mind would want to be associated with a failed doomsayer such as the charlatan Ehrlich whose "Population Time Bomb" belongs to the realms of pulp science fiction. Not one of his poorly informed prophecies of doom has ever come about and neither are they likely too. To have chosen someone like Holdren for a government post illustrates why the current president of the USA has lost most of his social capital in just a few months of taking office. He has no discernment when choosing his own advisors. Holdren ought to choose his friends and associates better than Ehrlich but, on the other hand, it demonstrates a singular lack of understanding of demography in this period of history and indicates the lamentable electoral choice of the American electorate, in the first place.

From reading most of the post there it is evident that many posters are truly devolved pond scum and probably should not be allowed to reproduce at all ,much less procreate as their idiotic whims dictate. Holdren's writing reminds me of the "Unabomber Manifesto". And he looks like Ted Kaczynski too. Beware of math/physics/science geeks who are on a mission to save the world. (I'm a math/physics/science geek myself, so I speak from experience.) Most of them are complete idiots when it comes to anything outside of their core area of competency. Geek scientists developing social theory/policy is a recipe for disaster. Go back to your lab and stfu already!

ngc123

Sep 9, 2009

I might add this: I predicted over a year ago that Obama would be a disaster. He had zero executive experience going in, and the President of the US is the most powerful executive position in the known universe. What were people smoking when they elected him?? I voted for Mitt Romney in the primary, because I could see the financial meltdown coming, and Mitt is a financial/management wizard, with tons of executive experience. It was a no-brainer to me. Why was everyone else so blind?? (Disclaimer: no, I am not a Mormon.)

ngc123

Sep 9, 2009

Here's something else: The president doesn't matter that much. Go ahead and put a moderate, charismatic Dem in the White House, like Bill Clinton. Just make sure that congress is controlled by hard-core fiscal conservatives at the same time, like Newt Gingrich. When that happened in the 90s we had four balanced budgets in a row. Remember? It matters more who you elect to congress than who you put in the White House.

Oct 2, 2009

Until we stop this whole insanity, we will continue to get all these crazy czars! I don't hold out much hope that we can get rid of Obama until 2012, but Congress can go next year! Many in the Senate can go too. Are you all paying attention yet? Did anyone actually look at the Constitution lately? We the people should be ticked, but the Congress should be outraged that their branch of government is being usurped by the Czar stuff. This is an occasional appointment type post; not a way to pay back every loon who ever supported you.

Eliminating deductions and simplifying tax code would seem a good idea for the sake of simplifying the tax code. I don't care for, a Presidential advisor gifted with the power of "Executive Order", having the mindset of influencing population growth.

I am sure socio-economic policy influencing fertility may be crafted to have the effect of reshaping the political makeup of our country.

The use of "Executive Orders" needs to be scaled back to undermine these Presidentially appointed "Czars" who wield the power of "Executive Order".

Didn't read all the comments, but in mearly reading the article it seems that Mr. Holdren has more of a problem with affluent people having babies than poor people. I thought weathier people already had a lower birth rate than poor people and that the US has a lower birth rate than most countries. Lowering the US birthrate even more would seem to have no effect on the worlds population at all.
