Former Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., is joining top D.C. lobbying firm Covington & Burling as a “senior adviser.” Smith, who lost his bid this fall for a third Senate term, owns the frozen-foods company his father created. At Covington & Burling, he will specialize in international trade and foreign relations, advising clients and other lobbyists. Ethics rules prohibit his lobbying Congress until January 2011. The announcement of Smith’s hire dampens speculation he could run for governor in 2010.
