New poll: Majority believe government is doing too much

A new Gallup poll shows that the number of people who believe government has its hand in too many areas of American life has reached its highest point in more than a decade.

The question asked by Gallup was, "Some people think the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. Others think that government should do more to solve our country's problems. Which comes closer to your own view?" Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed say government is doing too much, while 38 percent say it should do more. Five percent are undecided.

The number of people who believe government is doing too much is up sharply from early March, when 47 percent said government was doing too much and 42 percent said it should do more.

The last time the number of people who believe government is doing too much hit 57 percent was in October 1994, shortly before voters threw Democrats out of power in both the House and Senate. It continued to rise after that, hitting 60 percent in December 1995, before settling down in the later Clinton and Bush years.

Also, the number of people who say there is too much government regulation of business and industry has reached its highest point since Gallup began asking the question in 1993. In the new survey 45 percent say there's too much regulation, versus 24 percent who say there's too little and 27 percent who say there's the right amount. In a September 2008 Gallup survey, 38 percent said there was too much regulation, versus 27 percent who said there was too little and 31 percent who said there was the right amount.

I am afraid polls like this and the threat of being thrown back into the minority will have no impact on the leadership of the House and Senate. They know what they want to do and will do it regardless of what the country thinks.

Surely you jest... Congress would go against the wishes of their constituents? Do something different than all us uneducated, uninformed know-nothings would want? Rick, YOU are part of the problem... hmmm, maybe I'm part of the problem - or better yet, I'm part of the "ignored".
After all. I just live in "fly over" country, and I'm a racist, bigoted homophobe who clings to my guns and religion.
Obama told us what was on his mind - and still does.

Listen to what he says (sort out the outright lies, distortions, and omissions) He is speaking of his vision, and is doing it with his accomplices know as the "Democratic leadership" aka the elected thugs and cons.

And the supercilious liberals, ensconced in their unreality bubble, will pay it no mind. Sure, we *might* be able to chuck them out- but how much ireversible damage will have been done in the meantime? Government agencies are forever.

If the provisions are not started in action yet, if we throw out the libs/longtimers from congress in 2010, maybe we can shake them up enough to cancel the provisions of any "shoved down our throats" legislation.

Why should this or any other public dissatisfaction with Congress have any electoral effect given that districts have been so gerrymandered that 95% of incumbents are re-elected. While the Democrats are worse, the fundamental problem is the political class and systemic corruption. Without devolving from central control plus meaningful term limits, nothing much will change.

It's becoming more and more apparent that the election of Barack Obama and the Democrats taking over Congress since 2006 is more of a backlash against the corrupt and inept Bush Republicanism, rather than fatih in progressive change and reform.

What have the Democrats and their liberal minions ever brought to political discourse other than race-baiting and more government spending as the solution to our problems? Never.

Take the healthcare debate. The solution? A shiny new massive government bureaucracy.

Don't like it? You must be a racist...

Good luck with that in 2010.

The only problem for the establishment Republican party is that it's just as inept as the Democrats are right now. The only reason the momentum is on their side is because they barely said a word over the summer and just let the Democrats act like the jackasses they are.
