New poll results are devastating for Obama's Gitmo plan

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
06/02/09 2:44 PM EDT

I've gotten a look inside the Gallup poll numbers showing that a majority of Americans oppose shutting down the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay.  The numbers are stunning.  They show a strong and virtually across-the-board rejection of President Obama's proposal to close the prison.

Overall, 65 percent of those surveyed oppose shutting Gitmo, versus 32 percent who say it should be closed.  According to the poll's internal numbers, large majorities of men oppose closing the prison, large majorities of women oppose it, large majorities of white people oppose it, large majorities of non-white people oppose it, people with graduate degrees oppose it, and people who didn't finish high school oppose it.  Pretty much everybody.

For Obama, the key numbers are the ones that break down opinion by political party.  Ninety-one percent of Republicans oppose shutting Gitmo.  Sixty-eight percent of independents oppose it, too.  The only group that favors shutting down the prison is Democrats, and that is by a relatively narrow 53 percent to 42 percent margin.

When virtually the entire opposition party, plus 68 percent of independents, plus 42 percent of your own party oppose something you want to do, then you're in trouble.

Another part of the poll asked respondents, "What effect do you think the Guantanamo Bay prison has had on U.S. national security?  Overall, 40 percent say the prison has strengthened national security, while 37 percent say it has not had much effect at all.  Just 18 percent say the existence of Guantanamo has weakened national security.

Among Republicans, five percent say Gitmo has weakened national security.  Among independents, just 14 percent say the same, and among Democrats, just 33 percent say the prison has weakened national security.  That means that the overwhelming majority of Americans reject the key argument the Obama White House has put forward for closing Guantanamo -- that it has weakened American national security.

Finally, Gallup asked whether, if Guantanamo were closed, respondents would favor or oppose moving some of the inmates to prisons in their state.  No surprises here -- overall, 74 percent oppose having Gitmo detainees come to their state, while just 23 percent favor it.  Broken down by party, 94 percent of Republicans oppose it, 78 percent of independents oppose it, and 56 percent of Democrats oppose it.

That is overwhelming opposition, and these results are devastating for the president's plan to shut down Guantanamo.

Again that confirms that msot people don't feel safe if thta happens. Where would we put them because other countries don't want them. Americans are smarter here, but we are grounded in reality.

Obama will close it anyway, his leftwing buddies will demand it.

The president shouldn't listen to the polls on this. He is too powerful to worry about the public. He knows better because he talked to world leaders and ethicists as a candidate. His moral compass is stronger than most Americans, and he can prove it here by working with the speaker. Oh yeah, and pigs fly too.... With or without lipstick

I'm not stunned by the numbers. Any average working American, with the slightest amount of common sense, could have told you a month ago that closing Gitmo and bringing murdering terrorists into the U.S. was a very very bad idea! Obama can send them to their home countries, or get his good friends in Europe or the Moslem world to take them, but any Senator or Congressperson who lets Obama put a murdering terrorist in their state or district had better have a solid retirement plan in mind. Just say no to Obama, Pelosi, and Reid's plan to bring terrrorists into the U.S.!!!!!!

The American people continue to be easily scared sheep, what's the surprise? The Republicans have made an art out of scaring Americans and were too easily led to wake up.

I hope Obama does try to close down Gitmo before the 2010 election - this will translate in to a major Democrat butt kicking - bring it on Barry, bring it on.

Of course they oppose it, Obama's offered no alternative. The simplest of questions, like "Where are the prisoners gonna go?" are met with blank stares at an empty telepromtper. Obama already rejected giving most of them trials so they can't come to the U.S. Shipping them off to Bagram just highlights his hypocrisy in criticizing the Bush policies while continuing to follow them. All of the so-called friends that were supposedly just waiting to flock to Obama have told us to shove it and won't take any prisoners. What's left? May as well just keep 'em there.

When polls showed that most Americans had turned against the Iraq war, Vice-president Cheney said, "So?" In fact, conservatives in general believe foreign policy should not be made on the basis of popular opinion. Apparently, they only meant that if they're in power.

The significant thing about the entire policy regarding not only GITMO, but non-combatant prisoners and anti-terrorism policies more broadly, is that Obama and Democrats used this in the last election as a key issue on which they claimed was nothing less than a violation of the Constitution. Now Obama is maintaining renditions, the prison in Bagram, domestic wiretapping, indefinite detention without trials, military tribunals and arrests without warrant anywhere in the world. And, oh yes, there are a growing number of assassinations of suspected Taliban and al queda leaders, which of course is a far more moral and ethical approach than capturing them and using enhanced interrogation techniques. The hyrocisy, lies and corruption of this Administration and Congress are nothing short of outrageous! We have quickly established an Orwellian world of doublespeak where red means white and white means black. Thanks liberal slime.

I wish someone would do a poll of Americans asking "Are you in favor of sending those killers back to their home countries for possible execution? " "Would sending those killers back for possible torture and execution demonstrate American respect for cross cultural diversity?"

Looks like the GOP have short term memories. Both Bush and McCain wanted to close Gitmo. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General Petraeus also want to close Gitmo. Byron makes a good point that the GOP is now a poll driven party. Bush used to proudly proclaim that he didn't care about the polls. As he put it, "My job is to make decisons based on what I think is right." According to York, those days are long gone and the views of Commander of US Central Command, General Petraeus, don't register on the GOP's radar screens anymore.

The only thing that helps recruit more terrorists is success. Keep them on the run and in prison and you have a strong disincentive for others that may be so inclined. But with Obama his embrace of Iran, his badmouting of Israel, and now his endorsement of Iranian nuclear capability sends a very clear message to the bad guys. Obama doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing. That community organizer background didn't prepare him adequately for the real world. Prime example....keeping GM out of bankruptcy. That worked out real well, huh?

george

Jun 2, 2009

Yes, Bush wanted to close it, but he knew he couldn't because no better option existed so he kept it open and did not promise it would be closed. Obama will come to the same conclusion (maybe he has already.) The only difference is no Republican is calling Obama a war criminal, a Nazi etc... only a hypocrite

smallcap2000

Obama is the candy man who promises everyone, everything, but will back down and not close Gitmo. He over promises and under performs. The three million new or save jobs he promised, are no where to be found.

Jun 2, 2009

Irrespective of the overwhelming opinion of the American people with respect to closing the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility, it is a toss-up as to whether Obama will respect the wishes of the majority. If he does not, we have a president that is so beholden to a small group of special interests that he cannot be relied on as an effective leader of the people. My guess, he will tell the people to take the proverbial flying leap (in glowing prose and rhetoric of course).

Close GITMO, Mr. President. That is what you were elected for among other things. This poll, at best, is an outlier. My guess is they only called places like ID, WY, and GA which have strong Republican support but no intellectuals. This is still America. Try them in court or release them where you picked them up. It really is that simple.

I would like to see what happens to those poll numbers if the results of enhanced interrogations is released: What did we learn form prisoners at Gitmo? Why won't the white house release that. Personally, I would like to factor that into my evaluation of the big picture.

Jun 2, 2009

With respect to Jay22's comment, I would counter with making military and national security decisions based on campaign promises that were not well thought out is just as dangerous. Gitmo was a strawman elevated by the MSM and leftwing bleeding hearts trying to damage the Bush administration without any regard for national security.

Part of being a leader is leading. Obama knows the problems caused by Gitmo, and he has rightly called for its dismantling. Were poll results which showed Americans strongly opposed to the Iraq War similarly "devastating" to Mr. Bush. Strange I don't recall Byron York ever making that point.

Obama's moral compass is stronger? You are kidding. His compass starts in Kenya where and he has spent over $1,000,000 keeping his birth certificate and other records sealed. So much for transparency. Wonder what he is afraid of us seeing about his moral compass. Me thinks it will point left. Way left. He is a joke and liberals are poisoned. Maybe a Princess will kiss you out of your stupor. Just as soon as all the money Obama promised falls from the sky

Manufactured Democrat Propaganda

Jun 2, 2009

In this poll the American people are providing evidence that the Democrat party manufactured outrage over Gitmo to damage the Bush Administration shamlessly chosing political gain over national security. The Democrat chickens are coming home to roost.

I guess that we will all feel a lot safer having these prisoners in a communist country right? Never really understood the sense of that....they are on an island nation with which we have no diplomatic relations to speak of and is currently going through a leadership transition. Yeah, that makes me feel a lot safer. I'd feel a lot better if we had the prisoners here....if they get loose at least they would be in hostile territory. Anything we can do in cuba we can do here. And we would NEVER recover the prisoners if they got loose in Cuba.

Almost all of you have comments based on what you read in the newspaper and heard from the political pundits from both the left, middle and right media stations, BUT the information used by the Govt officials be it BUSH or OBAMA are totally different. We all dont know jack twit about their basis which of course maybe assumed with 99% accuracy the right call the the right time. Did it ever come across to the Obamamaniacs why he totally change from his campaign rhetoric and promises, it is so simple, people. HE NOW HAVE THE CORRECT INFORMATION, DEEP INFORMATION. So wake up, dont get fooled by what Obama says nor what Bush did, it was the calls needed at that time it was called. So to those highly opinionated arm chair pundit, keep it to yourselves and if you really love to serve, run for public office and lets see if you survive for a day...

We are at war with Muslim Terrorists whose intentions are to destroy America, the captured detainees at GITMO are lucky they were not executed on the spot as was done in the past and rightly so. War is about killing enough of the enemy until they surrender - does not sound pretty and tidy but it works, our way of attrition has always failed. Remember we did not create the World Trade Centers tragedy. It has also been proven that a large number of the detainees released have returned to their old ways assuming their treat to Americans around the world status. GITMO should stay!

This just goes to show how utterly blind the left is. They swallowed Obama hook, line and stinker. Now they see the empty suit muslim they were brainwashed into voting for. Unfortunately, it's too late now to save the union, unless he's impeached asap.

Jun 3, 2009

This poll doesn't tell us that much because it doesn't tell us how much the public cares about the issue. If the public cares, Obama and Congress won't close Gitmo. If not, they'll close it.

wikwox - I doubt that you were close enough to New York on 9/11 to give a hoot. People across the entire spectrum were horrified and dismayed to see people jump from the Twin Towers to escape burning to death, not to mention the firefighters, police, EMS, etc who gave their lives that day and since. You may feel that Repubs use scare tactics; look at a documentary about that day. Then think about people of the ilk that carried out the destruction and tell me they should be in your neighborhood prison. Wake up fool!

And by the way, why didn't you guys raise a fuss when the first 335 terrorists were locked up in US prisons? Why? None have escaped, all that have been prosecuted have been convicted, and they're not roaming the streets. If there's one thing we know how to do in this country, it's put people in prison. But don't let the facts get in the way of your ideology. You guys are nuts.

Polls don't matter to him, as he is a foreign agent under deep cover. the pundits on the right will continue to be dismayed as to why Obama will persist in unpopular policies. that's because they miis his true intent and devotion to the cause of bringing down the American system. The term Brown Shirts applied to ACORN/SEIU forces is no joke. They and the Muslim extremists are after the same thing, and Obama is one of them. Don't believe me, just watch his actions. Americans are being blind-sided by Obama and his fellow travelers, we had no idea how organized they were.
