Now they want Reagan's name off the airport

By: Barbara Hollingsworth

At Wednesday’s Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Board meeting, chairman H.R. Crawford – a former District Council member and Marion Barry confidante – told fellow Board members that he has heard talk on Capitol Hill about yanking former President Ronald Reagan’s name off the local airport and returning it to its previous generic moniker: National Airport.

“It was just a discussion. We’re not aware of anything specific,” MWAA spokeswoman Tara Hamilton later told The Examiner.

It’s clear that the current crop of congressional leaders want no part of Reagan’s grand conservative vision for America, but erasing all trace of his memory from an airport that’s already been named in his honor is about as petty as you can get.

Why would anybody on Capitol Hill even consider such a patently partisan move, which is guaranteed to make Democrats look small and ridiculous? Do they so fear the inevitable comparisons between the Great Communicator and his teleprompted successor in the White House?

No doubt tacked onto the bill to expunge Reagan's name will be language to name it "Obama National Airport." This is all quite pathetic, but only hurts Democrats. I hope they keep up with this petty nonsense.

Reagan stood for small government, fiscal responsibility, freedom of choice and personal responsibility. Don't forget standing up for Democracy all over the world. Reagan made us feel thankful to have our liberties and to understand why. Hmmm...guess that gets in their crawl and brings to light just how different the current administration operates. I was proud of Obama at first and over-looked a few lies I heard, but the corruption is rampant now and I am ashamed of him. I hope I see the day when he and his cronies and his propaganda press disappear forever.

Pres. Reagan stood for small government, fiscal responsibility, very strong military, personal responsibility and accountability and freedom. He made us feel thankful to have our freedom and to understand why. Don't forget he stood up for freedoms and Democracy all over the world. Guess that gets in their crawl because this is almost a complete opposite of the current administration. I was proud of obama, even though I knew he had lied a few times. Now, I am ashamed of him. I hope I see the day when he, his cronies and his neutered press disappear.

Hello - can't anyone spot a silly ploy to get republicans riled up? We're talking about the same "Obama the Communist" who won't even push for single payer health care. Evidently there are a lot of people with nothing meaningful to worry about!

They get the grassroots opposition zoned in on this which is petty but not something that will really have any impact and folks back off from pinging on their Senators and, Voila! we have the Cap & Tax... the ultimate control on based on the CO2 fraud.

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read." My suggestion would be to get out of the dogs and do some reading of actual facts and statistics on the acting presidents' record re: size of government, deficits, debt, money wasted on outspending the USSR on excess military projects, etc. I don't care about Reagan Airport, I'd rather take Stevens' off of Anchorage. Granted Bush's FBI screwed up the investigation. Easiest way to forestall or overturn a conviction.

Reagan was for helping the rich and gutting the poor and the middle class. He called medicare and SS Communism-not even just socialism but Communism, mind you. He was the beginning of the right wing gutting of education, music classes, after school programs. The gutting of regulations that protect our food and our workplace. Ronald Reagan sold weapons to terorists- Iran Contra and supported right wing torturers all over South America. I'd be happy if nothing was ever named after him

Pres. Reagan stood for small government (although it expanded more under his watch than ever before), fiscal responsibility (although he exploded the deficit with voodoo economics), very strong military (which bankrupted both the USSR and the USA), personal responsibility and accountability (except when it came to his friends and campaign contributors) and freedom (sure, I guess he believed in it but he certainly didn't do much to help us keep it). Just the kind of President we want on one of the biggest airports in America.

Correct me if I am wrong, and I am sure that a lot of the Reaganite sycophants here will do so, but was not The Great Communicator Himself opposed to naming anything after anyone who had not been dead for at least 25 years?!??! We in Washington were perfectly happy with that "generic moniker" of National Airport: we felt it went well with a sense of Nation and the fact that this airport was in the Nation's Capitol. The man was not even biologically dead before people wanted to memorialize him, and he wanted the 25 years! Seems odd that in an era where Republicans want to go backwards that they are opposed to putting something back to the way it was in the good old days. Finally, if you did not even live in the DC area, get off it: how would you feel in Akron if people in Iowa told you what to name your airport....?

Yes, it would be petty for the Democrats to change the name from one president in an effort to worship a modern era president, wouldn't it? Maybe sort of like changing the name of the airport named Washington (you know, as in President George Washington) National Airport to Reagan National Airport? I mean, that would just be petty wouldn't it?

Reagan was one of the greatest presidents in our history. It was under carter the peanut farmer that we had to wait in line for gas(if we could get any) and we were paying 17% interest on our mortgages. Reagan brought the biggest growth in our economy, reduced taxes, and turned the economy around that he inherited from mr. irrelevant. Get your facts straight. He brought about change. you left wingers are skitzos.

Wow! Somehow I ended up in a nest of truly deluded people. Reagan may have been the "Great Communicator" to you, but he said absolutely nothing of any consequence. He was a B actor, and his performances as both governor and president were far less than stellar and left both the state of California and the country in poor shape. I know that facts are anathema for all of you Reagan worshippers, but if you take the time to look at the roots of the financial crisis we find ourselves mired in right now you will find that they trace back to Reagan.

Jul 3, 2009

oh please. The republicans came into power and named the airport after reagan just to put a thumb in the eye of democrats. Left to their own devices they would have renamed the country The Reagan States of America, and are still actively trying to rename everything is site after him. Just ask "drown government in the bathtub" grover norquist. Its a further attempt at lionizing and trying to create a myth around reagan as the poster boy for conservatism, which all evidence disputes, but then, republicans have proven they have no taste for facts and evidence. I say call it all washingtonians call it, National Airport.

Reagan "stood for" smaller government. He "believed in" lower deficits. He "promoted" American strength abroad. He was "passionately" pro-life. What happened during his Administration? Doesn't matter. Move on. Nothing to see here. The Reagan Myth is just that- a Myth. Frankly I'm bored with the Reagan cultists. Washington National was a perfectly fine name for the airport. Want a Reagan Airport? Change the name of LAX.

If only they could actually change the name back to just National. Reagan was never a friend of DC (or of air traffic controllers or pilots for that matter). If any airport should be named after him make it in a Red State like Texas. Alas, the reversion to National will never happen as Republicans will make the loudest stink ever to defend the "honor" of their revered saint.

Wow, plenty of stupid and petty leftists here trying to denigrate Reagan. The fact remains that he brought about one of the largest economic expansions in the U.S., which is quite an accomplishment, especially after the debacle that was the Carter administration. This makes it all the more hilarious to see some idiots on here saying that Reagan was one of the worst presidents, whilst ignoring his predecessor and the mess that Reagan cleaned up after him.

And Comrade 0bama's (he's the guy in power now, remember?) deficits will beat the Bushes' and Reagan's combined. Oh, throw in those of every other President who left a debt behind for others to clean up and 0bama is still the "winner" in amassing debt. Reagan came from nothing and worked his way up; 0bama was handed everything. Too bad he didn't succeed in gutting education: We might have children who can spell, use algebra, and identify a fraud while saving taxpayers the bundle that goes to public school teachers' sinecures and their fat pensions.

Jul 4, 2009

Great idea. I fully support this. It should be just National Airport, or Washington National Airport. It should never have been changed to begin with. As for Reagan's legacy, its a joke. Look at California today. That's because of Reagans' Prop 13. The guy was an actor and nothing more.

The adoration of Reagan by the Right smacks of the 'cult of personality'. To the opposition, memories are not so fond- the denial of the AIDS infection, catsup sold to the poor as a vegetable portion, the 'judge and jury' destruction of the air traffic controllers, the puppet-like speech in an SS cemetery, and finally the sad spectacle of the first signs of Alzheimer's disease, masked by his controllers. Sorry, I've just never been awed by 'St. Ronnie'.

It's not the incessant CA intervention into business minutia, causing businesses to leave the state? It's not the $100 and $200 and $500 "fees" every time you turn around? It's not the millions of illegal aliens we support in CA?

Washington DC suffered greatly under Reagan; poverty and misery increased, and the class divide widened. It also should be noted that the city overwhelmingly voted for both Mondale and Carter. Why not name DC's airport after someone who the citizens actually remember fondly? Would citizens of Houston want their airport named after Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi? There are many airports in the country for Reagan, Cheney, or Nixon; let us name our airport after someone who is dear to us.

I see a lot of area folks of D.C. that seem to hate Reagan and like Carter or any Dem. and the only reason I can think of is they like their big Gov. jobs being paid for by fed. tax dollors( and they don't really work for those $ as we all know how little good comes out of gov. except to get in one's face and pocketbook) or they like the welfare they receive and it looks like the current Pres. and his special picks of socialest call by many (zars) to run behind the curtin with out any vetins or oversight by congress gives the big gov. workers and welfare folks a tingles up their legs because they know they are going to get a lot more of our money.
