Obama: 'We cannot fully know' motive of Ft. Hood shooter; in address on killings, president celebrates diversity of armed forces

President Obama says "we cannot fully know" what led Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to kill 13 people and wound 38 others at Fort Hood, Texas Thursday.

Hasan reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar!" before the killings, wrote Internet postings justifying Muslim suicide bombings, considered U.S. forces the enemy, and opposed American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as wars on Islam. His rampage at Ft. Hood has the markings of an act of Islamic terrorism.

But in his weekly address, Obama says, "We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing." And while the killings were "heartbreaking" and "despicable" and "devastating," the president says, it is important to remember not only that Hasan's fellow soldiers responded bravely in coming to the aid of the wounded but also that "Americans of every race, faith and station" have served in the U.S. armed forces. "They are Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and nonbelievers," Obama says. "They reflect the diversity that makes this America."

Obama says he is closely monitoring the investigation "into what led to this terrible crime." He has ordered American flags at the White House and federal buildings to fly at half-staff from now until Veterans' Day, next Wednesday.

Here is the entire text of the president's address:

I’d like to speak with you for a few minutes today about the tragedy that took place at Ft. Hood. This past Thursday, on a clear Texas afternoon, an Army psychiatrist walked into the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, and began shooting his fellow soldiers.

It is an act of violence that would have been heartbreaking had it occurred anyplace in America. It is a crime that would have horrified us had its victims been Americans of any background. But it’s all the more heartbreaking and all the more despicable because of the place where it occurred and the patriots who were its victims.

The SRP is where our men and women in uniform go before getting deployed. It’s where they get their teeth checked and their medical records updated and make sure everything is in order before getting shipped out. It was in this place, on a base where our soldiers ought to feel most safe, where those brave Americans who are preparing to risk their lives in defense of our nation, lost their lives in a crime against our nation.

Soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world called and emailed loved ones at Ft. Hood, all expressing the same stunned reaction: I’m supposed to be the one in harm’s way, not you.

Thursday’s shooting was one of the most devastating ever committed on an American military base. And yet, even as we saw the worst of human nature on full display, we also saw the best of America. We saw soldiers and civilians alike rushing to aid fallen comrades; tearing off bullet-riddled clothes to treat the injured; using blouses as tourniquets; taking down the shooter even as they bore wounds themselves.

We saw soldiers bringing to bear on our own soil the skills they had been trained to use abroad; skills that been honed through years of determined effort for one purpose and one purpose only: to protect and defend the United States of America.

We saw the valor, selflessness, and unity of purpose that make our servicemen and women the finest fighting force on Earth; that make the United States military the best the world has ever known; and that make all of us proud to be Americans.

On Friday, I met with FBI Director Mueller, Defense Secretary Gates, and representatives of the relevant agencies to discuss their ongoing investigation into what led to this terrible crime. And I’ll continue to be in close contact with them as new information comes in.

We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing. But what we do know is that our thoughts are with every single one of the men and women who were injured at Ft. Hood. Our thoughts are with all the families who’ve lost a loved one in this national tragedy. And our thoughts are with all the Americans who wear – or who’ve worn – the proud uniform of the United States of America; our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coast guardsmen, and the military families who love and support them.

In tribute to those who fell at Ft. Hood, I’ve ordered flags flying over the White House, and other federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff from now until Veterans Day next Wednesday. Veterans Day is our chance to honor those Americans who’ve served on battlefields from Lexington to Antietam, Normandy to Manila, Inchon to Khe Sanh, Ramadi to Kandahar.

They are Americans of every race, faith, and station. They are Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and nonbelievers. They are descendents of immigrants and immigrants themselves. They reflect the diversity that makes this America. But what they share is a patriotism like no other. What they share is a commitment to country that has been tested and proved worthy. What they share is the same unflinching courage, unblinking compassion, and uncommon camaraderie that the soldiers and civilians of Ft. Hood showed America and showed the world.

These are the men and women we honor today. These are the men and women we’ll honor on Veterans Day. And these are the men and women we shall honor every day, in times of war and times of peace, so long as our nation endures.

Thank you President Obama for the CAIR point of view. Given the shooter's history of jihadist internet postings and prosletyzing to wounded warriors, people are able to draw their own conclusions without your dissembling and running interference for those that would transform our country into AmerArabia.

obama still hasn't fully understood some of the people he surrounds himself with either. He injects race into almost everything that he says.Remember his friend Gates"I don't know all the facts, but the police acted stupidly".Hasan is an Islamic extremists. This is terrorism! If the military dances around this fact, who is going to stand up against it?

Can you imagine the yelling by the civil libertarians if the FBI had swooped in and grabbed that major? Racist profiling... We need racist profiling of very narrowly defined groups.
Obama could care less in his role as c. in c. He thinks the military is full of thugs.
This is just another forum for him to listen to himself. Did you hear the leadin to his statement on Thursday immediately after the shootings occurred? He was at an Indian conference - whooping it up as a community organizer. This loser is no leader.

I'll go further. Obama is not nearly as smart or savvy as people give him credit for - Clinton was far smarter and politically astute. (no I did not vote for him - I am conservative before Rep.)
Obama stays steered toward the extreme. He has polarized this country probably more than Bush - if the press and people were honest. And in all likelyhood will or has a smaller base of support than Bush. And no, I am not a Bush homer - he had some good points, but did a number of pretty stupid things.
But I digress - Obama is a racist, a socialist.marxist who is not the least bit interested in improving our country. He is focused solely on transforming our country.

Remember when that black professor was arrested for 'breaking' into his house? obama was there in a flash disparaging the police force. However when one of his own murders 13 people and wounds 30 more, he says wait one, we really don't know his motive. give me a break obama, remember in your own words you stated if the ill winds blew you would side with muslims - and you are. you are part of these murders just as if you did it yourself. You have gone around the world on your USA apology tour telling them how horrible we are; you have passed a bill giving 600 million to palestinians for college, you have passed a 30 million dollar bill to allow hamas to relocate to the US. you are doing your best to disband any and all of the protective devices we have against the enemy. - however I found out early on, the enemy is not outside our borders obama, the enemy is you.

Not sure where my comment went, but I was trying to remind people that when the federal building in Oklahoma City blew up in 1995, early reports were that the truck had been driven by a foreigner. Rather than foreigners this worst attack of Americans until 9-11 was planned and implemented by whites, of Christian-backgrounds, who were angered by the tyranny of the government towards the the group in Waco, TX.

Muslim-blaming is no less racist than making assumptions about any racial or religious grouping of people.

Hassan was a troubled man, what was he doing counseling people returning from a war zone, or being sent to a war zone? That is a question that I'm waiting for an answer to.

Grabski

Nov 7, 2009

LadyBug Tim McVeigh was a known atheist. And John Doe II was not a white person, and he rented the truck w/ McVeigh.

Hassan was not counseling people returning from a war zone, he apparently was reprimanded for arguing w/ them during their counseling sessions.

ladybug

Nov 7, 2009

I didn't say McVey was a Christian, but he came from a family that had been Christian. My point is there are plenty of atrocities committed by people, regardless of their religion. Atrocities did not start with the men of Muslim background who planned and killed people of many nations on September 11, 2001.

Hassan was a man who had shown great instability to be employed as a psychiatrist by the military. He should have been taken out of a rotation that he was unsuited to.

I apologize to Grabski - you're right, if he was smart, he would be more of a chameleon.
And to ladybug - any atrocity is of course bad, but when so much carnage around the worls is at the hands of people who so completely warp their religion - sad but true, they can be categorized and singled out. And should be. Interesting travel in Europe this summer. Every customs stop we made - there were men of Arab decent pulled aside for searches. If 98% of all terrorist attacks around the world are committed by one profiled group - search them all! Then tell them thank you - what gets me is that the truly peace loving Muslims - or followers of Islam aren't slamming the terrorists. They sit darn near silent.

What a president...he is a Islamic terrorist sympathizer! I have never been more disgusted by the person holding the office of president than I am in the man holding the office now. He is a disgrace. Nixon and Clinton, the previous 2 most disgusting presidents to hold the office cannot hold a candle to this man. I bet he would have (and maybe did) sympathized after 9/11. After all, one of the people he hired to advise him, Van Jones, was a 9/11 truther! If this doesn’t get the American people fired up to vote on 2010/2012, I don’t know what will. How difficult must it be to live your day-to-day life ignoring plain facts that are slapping you in the face?

Speaking about the Fort Hood shooter President Obama said: "We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing." Yet, this president just signed an expanded 'hate crimes bill' that says we MUST do exactly that for criminals liberals do not sympathize with. Otherwise, how could we convict a person of a hate crime when there is a presumption of innocence? Since the shooter survived, perhaps we can get Maxine Waters to "look into his heart" as she did President Bush? A valuable talent, that, and apparently one all liberals share, given their almost universal support for hate crime legislation. I wonder what clouded this mystical ability of Obama's when confronted by the first successful act of terrorism on American soil since 911? Oh, wait- silly of me. Bush did it.

The press is not reporting that all of his medical school, psychiatric training, internship and residency were all courtesy of the U.S. Government - to the tune of nearloy $500,000. He was an enlisted man who was chosen for officer candidate school as well as medical school at least partially because of his race and faith.
There are vague references to his bad performance report, but there are no reports that he tried to convert his patients to Islam. Imagine the reporting we would hear in the lamestream media if he had been trying to convert his patients to Christianity!

And just how is it that the President thinks we can "never" fully know the motive of the shooter? Seems pretty easy to figure out, given that the shooter is still alive and that he has a history of anti-war statements. How pompous and aloof of Obama! What truth is he trying to avoid this time?

We can't know the motive? The motive was to kill infidels while yelling allah akbar. Since he is a brother of the brotherhood, and since you stated on Stephy's show "My muslim faith" you don't want people to blame the religion you practice. Well we are! The Bible states "Thou Shalt Not Kill"(there are exceptions, if your family or country is being attacked, if someone has killed someone else the death penalty can be imposed, all others Jesus stated that the Wrath of God will take care of them) your religion says it is ok to kill the infidel. Barack Hussein Obama stated, “We can not fully know what leads a man to do such a thing,” referring to the radical Muslim jihadist that struck at Fort Hood. Did you expect anything else coming from Obama, who said he has empathy for the terrorists who on 9/11 crashed the planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania killing thousands of American citizens. He also said we, the American citizens should have empathy for them. Obama is an embarassment, an appeaser and is dangerous regarding America' safety. 2012 can't get here soon enough!

This is the new wave if Islamic Jihad. There have been several independent acts of terror committed this year an a number of plots disrupted. Islam isn't a religion in the way that Christians and Jews think of religion - it is a totalitarian system for controlling people an society based on the rantings of a violent, child molesting charlatan. If you bother to read the Koran and the Hadith, you'll see that 'the prophet' calls for violence against unbelievers and justifies it in many places. Aside from the categorical repression of women and it's intolerance of any aspect of live not being controlled by Islam, it's not too bad. What a crazy world we live in where we can't speak plainly about this murderous ideology.

"We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing."

What, yelling "ALLAHU AKBAR" didn't give you a clue?

Nothing to see here folks, move along. Brought to you by your PC-media government complex.

Note too that Obama called this a "crime" not a terrorist act. Again the 9/10 mentality at work.

This was just a warm-up act to the next terrorist attack. We've seen the lines develop by the government and the media. Both will tell us how "its our fault" and "we brought it on ourselves"

Already the Left is warming up its commentary for this narrative. Obama himself will piously state from the Oval Office (if its left standing) that we brought this terrorist attack on ourselves for our wars of aggression in Iraq, and he's just trying to undo the mess to defuse the anger, but evidently not in time.
