Obama stands by Kevin Jennings -- or does he?

The Center for American Progress, the liberal think tank close to the Obama administration, has posted a blog entry headlined "Obama Stands By His LGBT Nominees Under Attack From the Right." The Center says that President Obama, in his speech to the Human Rights Campaign Saturday night, "strongly reiterated his support" for Kevin Jennings, head of the Education Department's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, as well as for Chai Feldblum, a lesbian law professor nominated to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission -- although Obama did not mention either Jennings or Feldblum by name.

This is the passage from Obama's speech in which the Center says the president "strongly reiterated his support" for Jennings:

We're pushing hard to pass an inclusive employee non-discrimination bill. For the first time ever, an administration official testified in Congress in favor of this law. Nobody in America should be fired because they’re gay, despite doing a great job and meeting their responsibilities. It’s not fair, it’s not right, we’re going to put a stop to it. And it’s for this reason if any of my nominees are attacked not for what they believe but for who they are, I will not waver in my support because I will not waver in my commitment to ending discrimination in all its forms. [emphasis added]

Is that a strong expression of support for Obama's unnamed nominees? Or is it a carefully-worded statement in which Obama left wide open the possibility of sacking administration officials "for what they believe"?

Jennings has come under heavy criticism from many conservatives for, among other things, his work to introduce gay themes into the nation's classrooms, including elementary schools; the foreword he wrote for a book entitled Queering Elementary Education; his lack of experience in school safety and drug issues; some of the work of the organization he founded, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network; and his handling of an incident in 1988 in which, as a high school teacher, Jennings was approached by a sophomore boy who confided that he had become involved with an older man. Jennings' supporters claim he is under attack because he is gay, but the White House could conclude that Jennings' beliefs, as put into action throughout his career, are not appropriate for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. Couldn't the administration then push Jennings out -- without violating a word of Obama's lawyerly pledge to the Human Rights Campaign?

I watched the thing on cspan, I noticed who they conveniently left out... the people he named weren't controversial...

I think they're taking their time... they probably think that this won't blow up like Van Jones and they're probably right... in a couple months when the heat is off from everyone(including the right) he will find "opportunities" somewhere else...

I wouldn't let this guy Jennings anywhere near children, much less name him 'Safe School Czar'! Maybe 'queering of the schools czar' would be more appropriate.

Obama needs to distance himself from the kinds of issues that Kevin Jennings support. The idea of Kevin Jennings supporting Harry Hay, and by association, NAMBLA, the negligence of allowing a child to be sexually used by an older man, the introduction of anti-heterosexual themes in schools do not provide a realistic picture of LGBT citizens. The portrait of Kevin Jennings' beliefs shows an aggressive agenda that is actually dangerous to the rights of the LGBT community as a whole. It feeds into the out-of-date concept that all gay men are child predators, with the added bonus that they will be able to use the schools to "get at" children.

I agree with LEL wholeheartedly. The failure of Jennings to report child sexual abuse is a crime. A teacher/counselor is a mandatory reporter. Can't we have cabinet members who have not openly broken laws, not served jail time and properly paid their income taxes? I am sure there are plenty of highly qualified upstanding citizens who could serve in these posts.

Thank God all my kids have graduated a long time ago. Parents get this guy out of the Educational System now before he does more damage to our children and their future.

Well - that all depends on what you believe the definition of 'believe' is believed to mean.
Yep - Byron - that very same phrase jumped out at me as well.

I am continually horrified that the conversation re:Jennings is necessary. He is sick. Mambla??? What has come of us??? Get rid of this perversion NOW!!! Protection of children should trump everything. Our society is in the gutter. I am loosing hope that we can pull out it no matter how much we try. How very, very sad. The Bible says there is nothing new under the sun. Has anyone checked to see if a golden calf is on the WH lawn? God forgive us.

The really bad thing about this whole czar thing is that obama agrees with the anti-American stances that they've taken. If he didn't, they would never have been appointed in the first place

Forget about atanding by the gay czar, he should be sure NOT to stand in front of him!!! Sorry SORRY state of affairs this country is going in due to the preverted left that are in charge. CAN'T wait for 2010.

I will never let my kids go to a liberal indoctrination center, er, I mean public school. In fact, I don't think I'll let my kids even play at a public school.

Commies and perverts in the White House. The MSM (when they deal with this at all) frame it as failure of the vetting process. That, my friends, is garbage. Barry and Valerie know who these people are, and they are hired PRECISELY because they are commies and perverts.

What we have is Progressive Utopia. Yippee!

Why aren't the elite outraged? Perhaps their kids go to elite PRIVATE schools. The Obama kids do! We should BOYCOTT public schools until they get the message.

My parents always told me that you are what your friends are. Obama has a circle of friends only a American-hating, socialist European would envy. Any wonder why he won the Nobel Prize?

Obama using the HRC speech to use covert legal code language to show tacit support for his nominees makes me sick to my stomach.

I agree with Jim Anderson above, it all depends on what his definition of "believe" is -- after all, Obama must "believe" the same things in order to nominate these people -- Van Jones, Tim Geithner, Nancy-Ann DeParle, Dennis Blair, Cass R. Sunstein, John Holdren, etc.

President Obama said "nominees." Czars are not "nominees," they are White House staff "appointees," Nomination only applies to posts that require Senate confirmation -- first is the nomination, then the confirmation, and then appointment. Czars don't get nominated or confirmed. Nor do they have any of the special authority of those who are; they are just staff. Maybe Obama was just being imprecise, but this is pretty Clintonian in its clever wording.

Obama voters are shocked - SHOCKED to see the likes of Kevin Jennings in the Czar lineup? Don't tell us you never saw this coming because we on the Right warned you over and over. You just didn't want to listen. Now is your chance to right the wrongs and get this NAMBLA-supporting pedophile-hiding weirdo out of power. And while you're at it, do a little homework and take the time to see the background of the other czars Obama has turned power over to.

Why would anyone be surprised at any appointment by this left wing radical? He told all of us before the election who he was and what he stood for. All of his choices are a little off or way out of the main stream. Pick any of the jobs or cabinet posts and find one who is not legally or ethically challenged.

There's nothing wrong with Keving Jennings. I'm sure he'd make a fine scout master or priest. Why not a government post?

If obama is so truth to his nomeniees, why dont we let jenning give some classes to obama's "little girls"???
If obama thinks jennings is ok, then let him take care of his children!!!!

obama obviously left himself a huge amount of wiggle room with this statement. that said, unlike the van jones case where there were mountains of solid reasons why he should resign, this case against jennings is little more than innuendo, guilt-by-association, distortions, mis-information, and some outright lies. the torch and pitchfork crowd heard about how he has empathy for gay students and just ran wild from there.
if barack has any real integrity, he WOULD stand by this fellow, but it would be the first time i've seen him act with integrity.

Kevin Jennings is a hero; and so is Obama for appointing him

Oct 13, 2009

KEvin Jennings has done more to protect our nation's youth than the posters here will ever realize. He is a genuine hero. The ignorant, homophobic sentiments expressed in the preceding posts demonstrate why it is so crucial to have someone like Jennings helping safeguard our schools.

Our American Troops are heroes, not someone whose idol is a pedophile. Gay or straight doesn't really matter to me but failing to report a rape and worshipping a man that promotes pedophilia is radical, it's disgusting and he has no business having anything to do with children. We have Megan's Law so we know who to keep our kids away from and now Obama put's a pedophiles pal in charge of our kids...no way, not in my country.

Just curious... if the Condom Incident never happened, would you still support Jennings? Is his "lack of experience" the real reason for all of this vitriol?
