'Obama's Brilliant First Year' -- Nationalize health care, expand government, undermine Reagan

By: Byron York

The Democratic National Committee is sending around links to a new article, "Obama's Brilliant First Year," by Jacob Weisberg, of Slate and Newsweek. Weisberg argues that if Barack Obama manages to pass a national health care bill by January 20, 2010, the first anniversary of his inauguration, he will have "accomplished more than any other postwar American president at a comparable point in his presidency."

While Weisberg -- who last made a splash by amplifying White House attacks on Fox News -- gives Obama credit for other accomplishments, like the stimulus and putting America "on a new footing with the rest of the world," he suggests that the success of Obama's first year depends greatly on the passage of health care legislation. And while some advocates of the Democratic bills currently under consideration have tried to downplay the enormity of the changes the legislation would bring, Weisberg is entirely open about Obama's goal of nationalizing health care, expanding government, and undermining the legacy of Ronald Reagan.

"We are so submerged in the details of this debate…that it's easy to lose sight of the magnitude of the impending change," Weisberg writes. "For the federal government to take responsibility for health coverage will be a transformation of the American social contract and the single biggest change in government's role since the New Deal. If Obama governs for four or eight years and accomplishes nothing else, he may be judged the most consequential domestic president since LBJ. He will also undermine the view that Ronald Reagan permanently reversed a 50-year tide of American liberalism."

Given those stakes, and given that the Pollster.com average of polls shows Americans oppose the current health care bills by a 48 percent to 39 percent margin, you can see why Democrats are pushing harder and harder, racing against time to pass national health care legislation before public support collapses completely. What sort of article could Weisberg and other Obama admirers write on January 20 if health care were to fail?

This Weisberg is a burnt cookie. But are not all Liberals, whether they call themselves Communist, Socialist, Progressive, Nazi, or Democrat?

Wow. How can anyone be SO far off on reality? Everyday I am more stunned that there are people that can't see the obvious and can't hear facts to arrive at sensible, reasonable conclusions. What hope is there when sanity takes a holiday? It is going to get SO ugly and all of us deserve the coming conflagration.

If Wiesburg thinks Republicans are "going to lose sight of the magnitude of the impending change" of passing a healthcare bill and how "consequential" it would be, he is living in a dream world. He will learn this in November 2010.

You might as well say that Weisburg's tome is based on a lot of " ifs " . If Obama can pass Cap & Trade , Health-Care , demonstrably fix a sick economy and arrive at a winning Afghan strategy he will , in fact , have a " Brilliant first year ." ... And IF my Aunt had a beard , she'd be my Uncle ! Weisburg is kidding himself .

"he will have "accomplished more than any other postwar American president at a comparable point in his presidency."" Did I miss the end of the wars ??

If the White House can so blatantly announce their disdain for certain news organizations and commentators, then it's no surprise that other certain news organizations and commentators are so obviously working for the White House. For a price of course, their credibility.

Obama is brilliant: spending us into oblivion during a recession; weakening us abroad; perpetual campaign mode. George Soros thinks he 'brilliant'.

The most hilarious yet scary and telling part of that article is how it refers to Obama as a "postwar president".

Pres. Obama's first year has been disastrous. All he had to do was stick his comely snout in every friendly TV camera (which he did) while moderating his party's extreme left wing (which he didn't). Now the extreme lefties run the Democrats' Congressional contingent and they're going for broke regardless of the damage they do to the party or the Obama presidency.

I don't like Pres. Obama's policies or the Democrat party, so it's nice to see them under siege from a fifth column within their own ranks. You go, lefties!

So, how's all that hope and change working out for you America? Obama ran his campaign from the center and has attempted to run the country from the far left. He has lost the mushy center of American politics though it may be true that the Republicans have not yet recaptured it. But as he continues to dither on the war, and offer nothing but predictable socialism domestically he sets up the conditions for the return of divided governmnet and some semblance of sanity.

Yep, the Bamster has certainly accomplished a lot. He has taken over a big chunk of the private sector. He has caused the dollar to tank. He has hugely increased America's role as a debtor nation. He has grown government hugely and trampled the Constitution. He has perpetuated the man made global warming myth. And all this before lunch!

It's the manchurian candidate's great idea up until it fails, then, almost religiously, the left will turn it into Bush' fault somehow. lol Yes they are that stupid.

There is nothing that Obama can do before his inaugaration date that will take away his title of this countries worst President and taking away Jimmy Carters crown. Unless he reverses course he will go to the grave wearing that crown and all the lying the Democrats do isn't going to change it.

If Obama and his Democrat Marxist zombies succeed in forcing socialist health care through Congress - then millions of rightfully insulted and angry taxpayers will storm Washington D.C. and tar and feather Obama and those who support him, and overthrow this corrupt and illegitimate government.

Go ahead - make our day Obama.

The ruthless arrogance of Weisberg and the rest of Obama's thugs is mind blowing. We will not have to merely be warriors - we will have to be street fighters against this monstrous attack on the American public. God help us.

What country was Jacob talking about? Surely he is not talking about the presdent of the US Barry Obama is he? There is no way he could be saying such glowing comments about Barry. Wrong country or wrong president.

Jacob Weisberg needs to check himself into a rehab center, because he is outright delusional for making such comments about this "post-war" President. Hasn't anyone told him about Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Palestine, China, North Korea...should I keep going...???

The simple fact the DNC thinks so highly of this man leaves me wondering how many of them have drank the Obama Kool-Aid.

ugonomics: '..accessible healthcare..'?

84% of the country HAS health INSURANCE. The majority of those who do not are 18-29 year olds. Overwhelmingly of those by CHOICE.

I'm willing to say more than 15% of today's drivers don't possess car insurance. Is the Orator-in-Chief going to provide 'accessible auto'care' (mandated, like his health INSURANCE agenda)?

Productive Americans are going to have to go on strike for a while and withhold our contribution to the output of the nation.

There is no other way to FORCE these SOBs to listen to us.

I sure do like that "strike" idea. Wish we really could all withhold our taxes from the Uncle. How powerful would that be?

If Mr obama raises himself 10 feet off the ground, waves a magic wand,
and turns Michele white, then I would
say that would be his outstanding accomplishment as a president.
If Mr. obama dosen`t accomplish this devine act, then I would say in only one year he has topped
[Jimmy the rabbit]Carter as the worst President.

Wow. It really does feel like it's 1775 all over again. We have a powerful central government that refuses to listen to us. Increasing taxes not for our benefit, but for its own. Conspiring with greedy local (state) rulers to weaken individual liberties. How soon until we have law enforcement officials stationed in our homes to force us to obey?
