Reid unveils $849 billion health care bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nev. gestures while speaking on health care reform during a news conference, Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Sen. Democratic leaders Wednesday night unveiled an $849 billion health care reform proposal that would expand health insurance coverage to 31 million people and reduce the federal deficit by $127 billion over the first 10 years and up to $650 billion in the following decade, according to a senior Democratic aide.

The bill includes a government-run health insurance option with an opt-out provision for the states and it also includes a provision to create a privately run cooperative that would oversee health insurance exchanges.

The aide said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., plans to introduce the bill tomorrow and a vote could come as early as this weekend, although that has not been decided yet.

The bill will be posted online at some point, but it may not be today.

Liberal Democrats were hailing the bill as they went into a closed-door meeting with Reid, but moderates are warning there is a lot in the bill they don't like, including the public health insurance option.

UPDATE -- Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin says that a vote to move the bill forward in the Senate will be held on Saturday.

I love the part about lowering the deficit. Lowering the deficit by creating and raising all sorts of taxes, and by cutting Medicare.
Anybody who expects to live beyond 65 should be against any of these health bills.
And rationing is already being proposed - the new guidelines offered on mammograms. Rationing - and how many women would die that under today's guidelines would not? 1000's...
Mortality rates are higher on every type of cancer and disease in countries with socialized medicine because there is no such thing as "early detection". Rationed care does away with many tests that are common place in America now.

What kind of a political class does it take to keep scheduling these votes for Saturday's in the hopes fewer people will notice. That is indicative of a political class that knows it is doing the wrong thing.

@Rick -- in answer to your question -- one that is corrupt, has no respect for the American people, and is generally operating in bad faith.

Do Reid and his cohorts not understand how taxes work? The plethora of taxes on insurance companies, medical device manufacturers, etc. will simply be passed along to the consumer, resulting in higher premiums and costs. As I've said all along, everything under the sun is in this bill except good ideas.

Of course no illegal aliens will get insurance coverage because our Glorious Leader is about to wave his hands as he grants unconditional Amnesty to each and every one of those criminals. There will not be any such animal as an Illegal Alien in what used to be our country ever again, thank you so much, Messiah, for destroying the USA.. Next the Anointed One will nationalizr all K-12 schools with a change in study material to include lots of praise singing because the Young Communist Lego League want us to have compulsory singing of anthems in schools.

A public that's enamoured with 140 character tweets and a 2074 page health care bill. The rubber band of democracy is about to the break.

it funny to my why conservites get so defencive about health care, oh thats because they have it. for the other half of the country that doesn't have it. it sucks, ya i have a job, but they dont offer health benifits. and hell im just happy to have a job, and even if i wanted insurence i would pay more than a car payment, because i have a pre exsisting condition. so you between keeping things the way they are and changing them im all for changing what ever this thing we have today.
