Republicans who helped pass "cap and trade" benefitted from environmental donations

By: Kevin Mooney

House Republicans who received campaign donations from environmental groups helped make up the narrow margin of votes needed to send the Waxman-Markey “cap and trade” bill over to the U.S. Senate.

The legislation passed by a vote of just 219 to 212 on Friday with critical assistance from eight Republicans. They are: Mary Bono Mack (Calif.), Mike Castle (Del.), Mark Kirk (Ill.), Leonard Lance (N.J.), Frank LoBiondo (N.J.), John McHugh (N.Y.), Dave Reichert (Wash.), Chris Smith (N.J.).  This support proved critical with 44 Democrats voting against the regulatory scheme.
Political Action Committees (PACs) connected with the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, Ocean Champions and Republicans for Environmental Protection have made donations to most of these same eight Republican lawmakers in recent election cycles, according to OpenSecrets.Org.
Rep. Kirk of Illinois, for instance, was among the top 20 recipients of PAC donations from environmental groups in the 2008 election cycle. He received $1,000 from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC), $4,000 from Ocean Champions (PAC) and $4,000 from Republicans for Environmental Protection (PAC). In this same cycle Republicans for Environmental Protection also donated $4,000 in PAC funds to Rep. Reichert.
The League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club have directed support toward the New Jersey Republicans who voted for the new regulations. Rep. LoBiondo received $1,020 from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC) in the 2008 election cycle and  $2,010 from the Sierra Club (PAC) in the 2006 election cycle.
Rep. Lance, who first elected to Congress in 2008, has already received a donation from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC) for the 2010 election cycle in the amount of $250. Rep. Smith also received a $250 (PAC) donation from the League of Conservation Voters in the 2008 election cycle.
Rep. Mike Castle, the Delaware Republican, has also attracted support from these groups. The League of Conservation Voters (PAC) donated $750 in the 2008 election cycle and Republicans for Environmental Protection donated $1,000 in the 2006 election cycle.
Environmental activists remain heavily weighted in favor of the Democratic Party, according to OpenSecrets.Org. In the 2008 election cycle 94 percent of the donations from green groups went to the Democrats and just 6 percent to the Republicans. However, this same handful of Republicans now appears to be strategically positioned.
Among the top 20 recipients of PAC funds from green groups were former Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.), who pulled in $9,519 in the 2008 election cycle, and Rep. Vernon Buchanan (R-Fla.) with $14,200. Only eight Republican votes were needed this time around but it would seem others remain pliable.

Why is Chris Shays mentioned in this article (last paragraph) as if he were a member of Congress? Shays lost re-election last November.

"This support proved critical with 44 Democrats voting against the regulatory scheme." Don't kid yourself. The Democrats had the margin neccessary to pass this the whole way. If you watched the vote on Friday on CSPAN, The Democrats always had 10-12 more "NV"s (not voted yet) then Repubs while the vote Margin was about 7-11. So at any time if the 8 Repubs had voted against, 8 of those 44 Dems would have been forced to vote for the bill. (They were allowed to vote against for re-election purposed and because their vote wasn't needed to pass it.

Maybe it would have passed in any case, but this gives the Democrats cover to claim bi-partisanship. Plus, it would have put the 8 Democrats who would have been forced to change their votes at risk in the next election. These 8 Republicans do not deserve to be reelected.

There is only one answer: Vote them out. We still have the ultimate control. If we keep reelecting the flotsam on the Hill, we have only ourselves to blame.

Like any adovcacy organization with the least bit of sense, environmental organizations tend to support candidates who seem to share their values and whose voting records and responses indicate that they will be environmentally responsible legislators. To the extent your article hints that these votes were bought by PAC contributions of a few thousand dollars, that is silly. Responsible legislators understood the huge threat of climate disruption and the need to invest in a clean energy economy. They voted responsibly on a crucial bill. I am a member of the Sierra Club board of directors. My views expressed here are my own.

All those reepublicans who voted on the passing the energy bill need to be defeated in their next election by someone who isn't getting paid off.

So they pass this in the House for such a small amount of money...leaving tax payers to end up spending more on everything! Research some of these environmental groups, tell me if you see any of them attacking the mass of pollution laying on the ground where illegal aliens cross, do they even go out and clean it up? NO, it is the ones that want the borders closed that clean it. There is just no money for them to clean up after illegals!

David Scott, How do you know that? The bill wasn't even finished when they voted on it. There were at lest three hundred pages added at the last second and those who asked to see the langague were told that there was not a copy available to review prior to the vote! You call this responsible? This shows Pelosi and Obama to be the liars that they are. Both claimed the most "transparent" and "ethical" administration and congress respectively and have governed over the exact opposite. This is a corrupt bill jammed through late on a Friday and right before a long break for congress expressly to avoid any meaningful analysis of what is in the bill. Whether you are for or against Climate Change legislation, we should all be outraged by these dispicable tactics employed by the Pelosi and Obama.

David Scott - What the heck is climate disruption? That's a good one. First it was global warming, but ahh, no, that wasn't working. Then came climate change, but since the climate fluctuates, that doesn't seem valid. So now the leftists are trotting out CLIMATE DISRUPTION!?!? Does this mean the weather won't change? Eeegaads. To quote your favorite propagandists, Keth Olbermann, "Have you no shame sir? Have you no shame?"

Note that all of the Republicans who voted for the bill come from districts that voted for Obama. The Dems who voted against mostly come from districts that went for McCain. It takes a few million dollars to mount a congressional campaign today. People are not casting votes because of $5000 PAC contributions. I think you'd find all of the Republicans who voted yes have pro-environment records. I wish more Republican officials did.

To David Scott: If you based your support on verified scientific reality rather than unsubstantiated, and obviously flawed climatological theories maybe you would get Republican support. If greenhouse gas heats the atmosphere, then why have our temperatures been dropping these past 11 years? And if green house gas will keep the temperatures high then why to we want to reduce them if the Earth is getting cooler? Maybe we don't need to reduce our greenhouse gas levels since temperatures are dropping. I imagine that the stupid anti-cattle- flatulence amendment that was passed by those Representatives of Diary states like Wisconsin will make them sorry that they did not read it first. This bill, more than ever, should serve to stimulate some resistance to passing unread bills, more than any other in the past.

Hey David Scott, and all other like-minded Americans who deem yourselves critical thinkers - Before you force prosperity-killing measures onto the rest of us sensible Americans over this global warming stuff, please first explain away the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). You know, the historical fact that Viking colonies were growing grapes and other crops on the island of Greenland in the 11th and 12th centuries. Where were the coal-fired power plants and the hundreds of millions of cars pumping CO2 into the earth's atmosphere 800 years ago? How could the human race even exist today (at least according to you, Algore, James Hansen, et al...), in light of the fact that global temps during the MWP had to be several degrees hotter than even the worst-case catastrophic temp increase predicted by the IPCC's global warming computer models (garbage in - garbage out), upon which you base your beliefs? Funny how none of these pro man-made global warming scientists EVER mentions the MWP.

Hey Scott: You and all your Ilk who daily drink the Al Gore Global Warming Religion(or whatever you decide to call it today) need to remember that Al Gore FLUNKED our of the Vanderbilt Seminary...so why should anyone believe anything Gore believes. This PHONY Global Warming is a bigger ponzi scheme than Madoff ever perpetrated on his clients. This is nothing more than the largest TAX hike in our history. It is being perpetrated on us by phony organizations like the one that Mr. Scott leads. They see OUR hard earned $ as a piggy bank for them to propogate every phony theory they have come to believe. FACTS are a stubborn thing; something they know NOTHING about. Congressman Riechert is serving his LAST term in Congress. There are more of us than there are of you Mr. Scott. Happy Birthday everybody. We better enjoy our Nation while we can because the Chicago Mafia is quickly turning us into a third world country. God bless our magnificent warriors and their families. God Bless

Uh, Waxman-Markey was supported by a coalition "crazy left wing orgs" that included leading faith and religious organizations, union members, and businesses including American Electric Power. As for the comments about global warming, our own National Academy of Sciences issued an urgent call for governments to reduce carbon emissions. The NAS is neither a "crazy left wing org" or a political organization in any sense. The deniers and hucksters don't talk about the NAS much. I can imagine why.

Not one person who voted on this bill should be reelected. They are so stupid. Obama is throwing them under the bus and they don't know it. Why do you think that he is in such a hurry to get all this passed before 2010, because he knows that Americans will eventually wake up. A lot of these blind followers will lose in 2010. Those Republicans and Democrats who passed this without reading it, will be standing in the unemployment line come the next election. We need to go to our state government. Our states need to reject the cap and trade and the health care reform. If each state stood up to them, we have the numbers and we can defeat this disaster. Contact your states representatives.

We're all going to be sorry (stupid folks included) when all us of don't have the funds to live on anymore. If your broke who wins? For what, one hundredth of a degree difference? UNESCO is responsible for the dumbing down of Americans. Tell your friends to start reading and get ready for change. And pray.
