Scientific evidence now points to global cooling, contrary to U.N. alarmism

Opponents of the Waxman-Markey “cap and trade” bill would do well to invoke recent scientific studies that show global surface temperatures have not increased since 1998, contrary to what climate models have predicted.

U.S. policymakers who cite “consensus” on man-made global warming as justification for anti-emission regulations are relying upon outdated and misleading material  from the United Nations that deliberately omits the influence of natural forces, according to climate skeptics. In fact, a growing body of evidence  now points to the emergence of another cooling cycle that could persist for decades.
Dr. Don Easterbrook, a geologist and professor emeritus at Western Washington University, has presented data that shows a cooler and wetter climate is in order for the next 25 to 30 years. The Pacific Ocean has a warm temperature mode and a cool temperature mode known as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation or PDO, he said in a recent study.

The shift away from a cooling cycle in 1945 triggered several decades of warming that ended in 1998, according to the study. However, the PDO has now reverted back over to a cool mode, Easterbrook has concluded. This data raises questions about the reliability of models used by the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Easterbrook has said. This U.N. prediction of global temperatures 1° F warmer by 2011 and 2° F by 2038  appear to be very much off track.

Meanwhile, some scientists are convinced earth could experience more than just cooling over the next few decades. Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics with the National Autonomous University of Mexico sees evidence that points to the onset of a “little ice age” in about 10 years that could last for much of the 21st Century. The IPPC models are not correct because they do not take into account natural factors like solar activity, he said in a lecture.

This view is also advanced in a paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia.  The authors anticipate that sun’s activity will diminish significantly over the next few decades.

Up until now, critics of the Waxman-Markey bill inside and outside of Congress have focused mostly on the severe economic costs of emission caps. During the August recess, it might be helpful to ask members why they continue to pursue regulatory schemes unattached to what new scientific data now shows.

Thank God that someone inside the Beltway has finally started listening to what real scientists are saying ---- that global warming is a FRAUD, and global cooling is the reality.

How can such models be accurate when we have such invasive behaviour on environment ? You say we can accurately predict solar activity or a new "ice age" when we can't accurately predict the weather ? All i see here is a way to "save money", people die on huge floods, they get skin cancer and breathing problems and all they seem to care is money. Also have in mind that temperature increases even after 1998 according to NASA studies, you only refer to 3 studies when there are way more that state the opposite. Finally how about air and watter pollution ? What's the point if we can't breathe or drink water ?

"Consensus" is politics not science.

The planet is stable, it’s the alarmists that are not.

What a joke. We're going through this again? For many years, skeptics tried to claim the earth was not warming. Then, when they were proven beyond doubt to be wrong, they changed their argument to "We never doubted that it was warming, we just doubted that man is the cause of it." And now, they switch their argument again to "it is cooling." Nothing can stop ignorance. These people are going to keep on shifting their opinions and contradicting themselves for the rest of their lives as the right-wing media does the same.

There are two reasons why there is so much mis-information about this subject: (1) The right-wing media, and (2) The stupid people who believe it.

It is not arguable that the temperatures on Earth are constantly trending up or down. There have been millions of those cycles in the Earth's history. There have been hundreds of these cycles since the last "Ice Age". They can be predicted with some accuracy. By the way... since the Earth has been through so many warming cycles, why is that THIS cycle was caused by man? Follow the money.

Gee Dr. Sanchez, is that like the change from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change". I am sure a neutral observer would never think to attribute that to, you know, global cooling.

Paul Mason -- thanks for your comment. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Dr. Sanchez -- there are two reasons why there is so much mis-information: (1) Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth", and (2) Liberal media covering up the evidence against Global Warming.

Even the President's EPA is using politics to hide the truth about this global warming hoax in order to push Cap-and-Tax policy through Congress to destroy what is left of our economy.

All a bunch of BS, and even Al Gore knows it (but stands to make a ton of money off cap and trade in the business he set up to help broker credits). I love today today he had to go out to CA to meet former Pres. Clinton and greet the reporters released from N. Korea. I bet Al "didn't consume any energy or emit any pollution" for what I believe to be an unnecessary trip. What value did he bring? I'm sure he spewed plenty of crud into the environment to get there! He should practice what he preaches and just stay home in a cave.

Why do you publish outright falsehoods. I'm not even going to debate the pros and cons of global warming. What really irks me is the complete lack of fact checking. If anyone at this site ever bothered to read the actual science portion (not just summaries) of the IPCC documents, then you would clearly see that the models do take into account natural forcings such as solar activity (along with a host of other intrinsic forcings).
I enjoy good discourse on important topics such as whether global warming is anthropogenic or entirely natural due to cycles. But what I can't stand is when sites publish trash that is easily discredited. Don't you people ever READ the original scientific articles?

So, even if there was no global warming, then what, we can just drop all the pro-environmental policies??? 40% of deaths can be attributed to pollution:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070813162438.htm

And then, what are we gonna do when the coal and oil runs out????? Do warming deniers ever think of these problems?

Gee Dr. Sanchez and JP, when essentially all of the data show that the planet has cooled over the last several years, what is a poor conservative to believe ? Should we cling to "models" in the face of directly contradictory data ? I think we should not !

try this at home. freeze a carbonated beverage then let it thaw. open the bottle and put a ballon on it. do the same with a normal cold beverage. leave both out for 24 hours. you'll see the frozen one had less CO2. this is an exact replication of the conditions of a glacial core sample of old CO2. unless the core sample is kept at the pressure it was taken at ie thousands of PSI, the CO2 escapes long before it gets to the lab.

of course there is more modern CO2 in the 'test' the old stuff escaped.

this is the basis of the global green house gas fraud.

Global Warming is a lie, that's why they changed the name of this male-believe crisis to 'climate change'. But the climate is always changing, man can't prevent that.

The whole CO2/Global Warming myth is based on a correlation between rising atmospheric CO2 levels and rising temperatures. But correlation does not equal causation. The fact is, rising CO2 levels lag behind rising temperatures, suggesting that global warming causes an increase in CO2, not the other way around. So tell me again, why are we doing Cap and Tax?

Aug 5, 2009

Dr Sanchez and friends, there is no need to bother to contradict global warming theories as data repressed by mainstream media and easily available online shows it is all based on supposition, guesses (ie computer modelling) and false accounting. The cash generated to fill bankrupt economies based on bad debts needs to be justified and what better excuse is to protect our children? The fact it's all absolute garbage and can easily be shown to be so is irrelevant to the average punter who never challenges anything from 'authority'. Thank goodness most people here have done so and the consensus seems to be on the other side at the moment.

Cute try at changing the subject "Truth".
Nobody is defending pollution, just objecting to re-defining CO2 as a pollutant. Inconvenient Truth #1: anthropogenic climate change is, and always was, a LIE - a cold-hearted, calculated-to-deceive, lie - to cash in on gullible suckers and seize power.

"then you would clearly see that the models do take into account natural forcings such as solar activity (along with a host of other intrinsic forcings)."

Malarkey. The models zero them out. Yes indeed: believe it or not, among other things they actually postulate constant cloud cover and RH! And the lame attempt to write off solar forcing by just looking at Total Solar Irradiance was a cheap, cheap strawman. The IPCC report is a political, not a scientific document.

"The warmest year on record was 2005"

Again, malarkey. Nobody claims that except Gore's buddy James Hansen at GISS- and if you believe that serial data-fudger, whose dataset continues to diverge ever farther from all the rest, you are a sucker.

The Sun and in a subsiduary way the oceans drive the Earths climate, not man. Co2 is a trace gas in the atmosphere and its also plant food. A bit more Co2 would help produce better crops (more food). The empirical data indicates the planet is currently nearing the end of an interglacial period and will return to its usual cold state irrespective of what Man does. Some of the worlds governments are ignoring this in favour of the tax revenue generating global warming hoax.
Computer modelling is all about guess work and an attempt to justify massive tax increases and nice profits for the fear peddlars like Mr Gore. The earth has been cooling since 1998 and CO2 in the atmosphere is rising, which is the opposite of what the computer models predict.

Climate change happens in spite of us, not because of us. The secularists try to destroy God by portraying man as more powerful than God. It is an egocentric mentality that, now, extends to the presidency. The foolishness of man/woman has never been on better display than by the likes of BO/Pelosi/Frank/Gore.....

Aug 6, 2009

If you're so certain man cannot change the climate, fire a few nukes at Antarctica and Greenland. Are you sure the melting glaciers won't affect sea level or temperatures? If a massive volcanic eruption can change the climate in significant ways, why are we so certain that human activity can't do the same, if comparable amounts of CO2 are emitted? We already know that man-made ozone depleters destroy atmospheric ozone.

Aug 6, 2009

The one certain thing about science is that there is nothing certain. When someone like Gore says manmade global warming is settled, he is talking about politics not science. Anyone who has ever been involved with the scientific community knows that it is highly competitive.

Theories come and theories go. Some are more capable of handling the current collection of facts than others and they become the new standard -- until a better theory comes along.

I just wonder how many people here are physicists and how many actually know what a computer model is and how it works...Pollution btw is not just CO2 and CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas (and btw when cooling a gas it has less volume, i guess you 've never heard of thermodynamics). Wake up people this is just politics, we need to stop polluting the environment or we 'll end up with cancer and various other diseases. Can anyone here convince us that we shouldn't stop polluting the environment and that polluting the environment is a good thing ? I doubt it...

This is another case of follow the money. The European Climate Exchange estimates that manadatory cap and trade in the U.S. is worth over a Trillion $$$ to them. The Chicago Climate Exchange and the European Climate Exchange are both owned by a U.K company now-most of the clearing banks for trading carbon credits are foreign banks-largely outside of the U.S. control. Big corporations, including many environmental groups like Nature Conservancy stand to make millions of $$'s with cap and trade selling carbon credits on land they own.

The "warmers" are just about at the end of their little game. This sham has gone on for too long. We are having NO SUMMER IN THE MIDWEST!!!!! June and July were the coolest in history of Iowa and Illinois. Over 3000 all time low temp records were set in June in this country. At some point even a stupid liberal can tell when it's cold outside. You can't deny the reality of a -27 day in January. We had that this past year, setting an all time record. You people and your slavish devotion to warming is disgusting. CO2 is not a particulate. Every one of you presents it as a particulate. It is an odorless, colorless, totally undetectable gas without very sensitive measuring equipment. You people are either stupid or ignorant to consider co2 in the same manner as particulates. It is a NATURAL gas. Every time a stupid liberal spouts off co2 comes out of his ignorant face. Try and understand, morons.

We can create the same things using air filters and water treatment facilities, we can use hybrid cars, we can increase the usage of renewable power sources etc. It just costs more for industry to use such measures/technologies, that's why they don't want to go that way and invent such ridiculous claims. I am awake, others are sleeping... In Athens you couldn't see because of the smog 10 years ago, now you can see but it's 40C instead of 36C (and i have stats). People still use old technology A/C units and old fridges that use CFCs when we have newer technologies that don't destroy the ozone layer, they still waste electric power for water heating and cooking instead of using natural gas or solar heaters. You think that's a good thing ? From a physicist point of view we increase entropy too fast for no reason.

It's just the latest buzzword ...the latest vehicle, the latest excuse for those that want to push their anti-capitalist, anti-business agenda and control our lives. Hello Forest Green,

Your quite right. A few "Nukes" detonated in Greenland and Antarctica would certainly make a significant change to the local climate for a short while, as well as killing lots of people in Greenland, but like a Volcanic eruption the effect would be short lived. A couple of years at the most. Then we would be back with the same dilema. A cooling Planet.

How does Don Easterbrook reply when confronted with the facts that reality has not agreed with his theory?

The planet’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for July, breaking the previous high mark established in 1998 according to an analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. The combined average global land and ocean surface temperature for July 2009 ranked fifth-warmest since world-wide records began in 1880.
