Sheehan: Pro-Obama media want the anti-war movement to go away

By: Byron York

This week ABC News anchorman Charles Gibson, who extensively covered anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan's demonstrations against George W. Bush in 2005, said "Enough already" when it comes to Sheehan's plans to protest next week at Martha's Vineyard, where President Barack Obama will be vacationing.

Now Sheehan has responded. "I am sure that he just wants me to go away like most of the rest of the anti-war movement has done under the Obama presidency," Sheehan writes at her website.

One of the things I hear quite often from people from all over the political spectrum is: “Why don’t you just go away, you’ve had your 15 minutes of fame.”

Yes, that’s exactly what I thought as soon as I heard that my son was killed in the US’s illegal and immoral war in Iraq: “this is a perfect opportunity to get my 15 minutes of fame.” Actually, after I slowly recovered from the shock and horror, the pain always remains, I thought that I had to do everything I can to end this nightmare so other mothers/families wouldn’t have to go through what I was going through and what I am going through.

I certainly am not the anchor of a major network news show, but last time I checked, people are still dying at a heartrending clip in Iraq-Af-Pak.

If my goal was “15 minutes of fame,” I could have gone quietly away a long time ago. I started because I wanted the wars to end, and I will figure I can go away when the wars end…but when is that going to be? In my lifetime, probably not.

I am cutting my writing-staycation short to head to Martha’s Vineyard because I think the new titular head of the empire needs to know that his policies are devastating people as much as the same policies did when Bush was president.

Given Sheehan's determination, the question remains: With roughly 130,000 American soldiers still in Iraq, with 68,000 in Afghanistan by the end of this year, will major news outlets cover her protest at Martha's Vineyard? Gibson's remarks suggests he has no interest, but what of the rest?

I find it interesting that on the liberal side of my town, the liberal anti-war lawn signs have "disappeared" since Obama won the election. This proves to me that liberals USED the war during the Bush presidency only as a political tool! What about our soldiers? The mainstream media is playing right along with this game, as evidenced by the lack of headlines when our soldiers die. Shameful liberals!

I would like to see less coverage of the hypocrisy of liberals and/or conservatives, and more coverage about exactly what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. The current media coverage is highly selective, and the affidavits of the former Blackwater employees in the recently filed lawsuit were, quite frankly, terrifying to read. When you have former military officers alleging that Blackwater engaged in arms trafficking, child prostitution, and the deliberate mass murder of Iraqi civilians, it's enough to raise questions about why President Obama increased Blackwater's funding in the same week that these allegations were made public. Could we have a little bit more coverage of this issue, please?

I have been wondering where you have been Cindy. Did you have to find funds elsewhere in order to protest, as I doubt Soros, Moveon.org have given you the funds to protest Obama...

Get out there & protest Obama, as you did with Bush!

I disagree with Ms. Sheehan on a lot of things - but I'll give her points for consistency.

She has my sympathies for the loss of her son.

She's still dead wrong, she's still on the other side (Chavez).

I give her full marks for consistency and honesty but that makes her an honest enemy. Not a friend.

"I am sure that he just wants me to go away like most of the rest of the anti-war movement has done under the Obama presidency."

Duh. You did what the Democrats wanted. You were essential to getting them elected. Now you can only hurt them so it's clearly time for you to go away.

Yes, the useful idiot is now just a whining deadsonmonger. She has my sympathies for the loss of her audience.

During the Bush years, the MSM regularly celebrat--I mean OBSERVED--milestone American military casualties in the "illegal war." Where does one turn for a reliable death count these days? Has the war been "legalized"? Are US service personnel relaxing poolside over there?

You have to pity the poor woman. She was used and then tossed away like a tissue.

Get this message out!

Do the people who believed that the Iraq War was "unnecessary evil" now believe that the brutal war in Afghanistan is necessary? Do most people have real beliefs or deep-seated political loyalties?

I've got a pool going for how many times this event, once added to Wikipedia, will be removed by the liberal cabal that patrol the site. Who's in? $10!!!

Oh yeah.. she never ever used her son's death for 15 minutes of fame. She had all sorts of respect for his sacrifice. That's why she used his death benefit to pay her back taxes (taxes she refused to pay in "protest" of the war).

Anna Marie, authentic Progressives are every bit as anti-war NOW as they were THEN. We don't care who is President.

If you don't see us on your tv or hear us on your radio it only goes to show that we are being censored. (Fairness Doctrine anyone?)

Authentic Progressives put 1 million people in the street in protest of Iraq but got only a fraction of the media coverage the insurance companies' rent-a-mobs have received.

Please join authentic Progressives like Cindy in demanding an end to war and full media coverage.

To those of you who say Cindy was used by the DNC you don't know what you're talking about.

Cindy supported Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party for President.

Cindy ran AGAINST Democrat Nancy Pelosi for her Congressional seat.

Cindy has been writing in opposition of most of the policies of Democrats for YEARS.

But it's so much easier to make unfounded claims than it is to do actual homework.

Cindy thank you for standing by your convictions. MSNBC, Move-on, D.Kos and Huffington Post are just a bunch of Obama cheerleaders.

I like that MSNBC, Move-on, D. Kos and Huffington Post call out the right wingnuts, birthers and bigots. But I also hope everyone who can make it will join Cindy Sheehan in protesting that dumb-a** war in Afghanistan. Give the news media some news to write about!
