Take the red pill, Mr. President

"If there's a blue pill and a red pill, and the blue pill is half the price of the red pill and works just as well, why not pay half price for the thing that's going to make you well?" -- President Obama

In last night's press conference, President Obama seemed to be reliving that famous scene from The Matrix. The main character is offered a choice between a red pill that makes him see reality for what it is, and a blue pill that allows him to continue living in a pleasant world of illusions.

Last night, President Obama appeared to have taken the blue pill before his press conference. How else could he convince himself, the Congressional Budget Office's numbers notwithstanding, that his health care reform bill will not increase both health care costs and the federal deficit? How else can he continue to make the argument that a massive expansion of government spending on health care will solve rather than exacerbate the current problems? How can he repeatedly express such absolute certainty that such a measure will easily pay for itself several times over in the long run? Why can he not at least acknowledge the possibility that it will become a costly and useless trillion-dollar boondoggle that follows in the footsteps of his stimulus package?

With his example of the red and blue pills, and another about whether a child's hypothetical tonsils should be removed, President Obama unwittingly presents the real problem with his plan for reform. Here is a well-meaning government official who so fails to grasp the problem in health care that he can present such absurd oversimplifications and suggest that this sort of thing is the real problem -- doctors simply lack the common sense to make obvious medical decisions. President Obama wants us to solve this problem by putting himself and other government officials in charge of rescuing medicine from the medical profession. If medical doctors with a decade of schooling cannot distinguish between good cures and ineffective ones that must be discontinued, then by gosh, we're lucky that the good folks from the government can.

President Obama thus frames the issue as a false choice between doing nothing at all and handing over to Washington complicated, case-by-case medical decisions that cannot possibly be legislated or dictated by government.

This transfer of medical authority to the bureaucracy is intended to curb costs. Unfortunately, there is exactly one thing that government can do to control costs in health care: it can insist on paying below cost. This shifts the cost burden to private insurance companies, which in turn pass along higher premiums to their patients. This is what government-run Medicare does today for many treatments, including cancer. Government will do more of this kind of "saving" when it assumes greater responsibility for funding citizens' health care, particularly if a government-option health care plan is established.

The Mayo Clinic which President Obama praised in his speech last night is the same Mayo Clinic whose president signed onto a letter to Congress yesterday, expressing fears that a government-option health care plan Obama wants to establish will do more of this cost-shifting. The letter states:

Under the current Medicare system, a majority of doctors and hospitals that care for Medicare patients are paid substantially less than it costs to treat them. Many providers are therefore already approaching a point where they can not afford to see Medicare patients. Expansion of a Medicare-type plan without a method to define, measure, and pay for healthy outcomes for patients will move many doctors and hospitals across this threshold, and ultimately hurt the patients who seek our care. We should not put more Americans into the current unsustainable system.

President Obama brushed off this concern last night near the end of his press conference, citing a hopeful but very vague blog post on Mayo's website that went up a day before the letter was sent. In addition to ignoring budgetary and medical concerns, he repeated his dubious promise that his plan will not force millions of Americans out of health insurance plans they already have and like. He had no comforting words to convince anyone of the wisdom of creating two new taxes on employers -- one of them a tax that punishes small businesses with a higher tax rate if they create more jobs -- in the middle of a recession.

The one thing President Obama did not do last night was address directly any of the concerns that Americans have about his pending reform proposals. With this sort of rhetorical detachment from reality, it is not surprising that public support for his vision of health care reform is gradually eroding.

President Obama needs to take the red pill, even if it does cost twice as much.

I'm glad you caught what he said about the Doctors - I have not heard anyone point this out! He also claimed that doctors were dishonest in that they may perform a procedure because they get paid more. And, I guess a govt body which doesn't even examine the actual patient will know better than the physician! I think this was a telling comment he made - there will be someone between you and your physician with all the data to help the physician treat the patient - PLEASE!

On his own blog, our president, who is obviously a doctor in disguise, said that if Congress didn't pass what he wanted, he'd find a way to sneak it thru via other means. So much for that "transparency" he was so fond of proclaiming when he was a candidate.

This is not about health care. This is about Power. Unlimited Power. Power to the Federal Government. Freedom is a zero sum equation. If you give power to the Government you take freedom from the People. This and the fact that Obama is bankrupting our nation means that a crisis is coming by design which this traitor will take advantage of to establish him as another Dictator.

I spent years experiencing sore throats, strep, and even mono and my doctor insisted that the taking out my tonsils was not the answer. In his opinion, it was an unnecessary procedure. He was right. I am fine now and never have problems. Thank God for my honest doctor. I don't think Mr. Obama and his cronies in Washington are being honest about what they intend for America. We need to stop this insanity.

Obama is a remarkably ineffective president, for his cause.

He's going after the whole enchilada, ramming bills through the House that will never pass in the Senate. For what?

Reminds me of the Clinton BTU tax.

If he passes legislation, it will be without any meaningful Republican votes. Maybe no votes.

Bill Clinton's tax increases, all over again.

The election upcoming will be 1994 all over again.

Obama's "false choice" speech is exceedingly simple, and extraordinarily disingenuous. It's his prevailing mode of commentary. He's done it repeatedly. He presents two choices: one ridiculous, and the other that he has selected. He then says, "Some people say ..." (this of course is the foolish choice), "but I say ..." and this of course is the one he also expects YOU to come to support. It's straight out of the used car salesman handbook. Wake up folks. You're being chumped. The emperor has no clothes.

The simple fact of the matter is that billions upon billions of dollars could be saved by the Medicare and Medicaid systems and other health insurance if people were willing to assume a more direct responsibility for their own health by making the dietary and life-style changes necessary rather than relying upon pharmaceuticals and high cost diagnostic tests and procedures to protect them from the consequences of their own irresponsibility.

Jul 23, 2009

I see it with basic economics of supply and demand. If you want the cost of health care to decrease, either decrease the demand for health care or increase the supply of doctors.... i dont see how adding however-many-millions of people to the doctors sheets will decrease cost. if you want to help fix it, help the doctors pay their student loans. Allow the doctors to make LESS money so that the cost savings pass on to us. If a doctor didn't have 300k of student loan debt plus have to pay for malpractice insurance, they might not would have to make 250k plus a year....

screw this health care for everybody crap... help more people become doctors.... increase the supply.

Jul 23, 2009

I think the term "health care reform" is a misnomer. We don't need complete overall of the system. By calling it reform allows the Obama administration to make it sound like the system is in shambles. It needs to be called "health care cost reform". Cost ARE too high and when costs are lowered it will lower the number of uninsured. Don't scrap the system for the 85% of the people it works well. Most "uninsured" are illegal immigrants, individuals making enough ($75,000) to pay-as-you-go, people in job transition, and those who have health savings accounts.

How is it that politicians simply do not understand basic economics. The cost of health care continues to rise for the private sector because the government sector refuses to pay market rates. The actual cost of care isn't less, only the government's share. It is like poking a balloon in one place and having it bulge outward in another. My 10-year old son understands this. Yet again Obama says "crisis" and the congressional lemmings march on. No more. Some reform may be necessary, but the medical house is not burning down. The system is not broken, contrary to liberal fantasy. Portable coverage, tax breaks to the individual, and ability to purchase catastrophic coverage alone is what is needed. We absolutely do not need increased government intervention.

Obama wants a government option to keep the insurance companies honest. What will keep the government option honest? The government option plans on cheating when competing.

Let's try this again I keep getting interference with typing. Obama has the Red/Blue Pill thing incorrectly again. My Father who was a truck driver and a severe Diabetic had his Insurance (In the early 1970s) encouraged him to buy less expensive products like generic Asprin. My father He used the generic prescriptions for everything including the little asprin the company wanted him to. 6 months in he was in the hospital trying to get control of his diabetes. Seems like the agent that was used to "cut" the asprin and one of the pills was "sugar". He spent the rest of his life tied to the insulin shotswhich the doctor had tried to avoid. Thank you Generic Barak.

When Obamarama, who was nothing more than a backbencher politician who had accomplished NOTHING until he ran for the presidency, accused a fictional doctor of going for the tonsillectomy because it "pays more," that's when I started yelling at the TV... OUTRAGEOUS.

And I assume you all know about how private health insurance is regulated out of business (page 16 of the House bill) and how it will be MANDATED that all senior citizens get "end of life" information/decision making options when they are in Medicare at least every five years? Does anyone question where that is going? OUTRAGEOUS!!

James

Jul 23, 2009

Unfortunately, the decision as to who makes the medical decisions has already been taken out of the hands of the doctors. It's been put in the hands of the insurance companies. It used to be you paid the doctor and argued with the insurance company. Now you pay the insurance company and the doctor gets to argue with them. Of course, the insurance company wants to keep the money (you gave it to them), so they want the doctor less and less. So, the question is really would you rather let the greedy soulless insurance companies run the medical system or the incompetent government.

Should I fix the transmission or should I abandon the car and buy the new government car? The government car hasn't been built yet, I don't know how many people it will hold, what kind of amenities it has, what kind of engine it has, what kind of milage it gets but I do know it will be built by people that have never built a car before. Which would you choose? I'd fix the transmission. Let's do tort reform first and see what happens. But Obama has refused to do that because he's in the pocket of the tort lawyers.

When all liberals can deliver are vague promises and criticize the good people who dedicate themselves to providing great health care, it is a sad day in America. I noticed that Obama started his press conference talking about "health insurance" reform but the later it got in the press conference, it turned into "health care" reform. There is a difference, but apparently these differences have been blurred into the same thing. Yes -- we need health insurance reform via a free market system of competition - we don't need health care reform. We've got the best health care in the world. I wish everyone would see the difference.

Your assesment is quite accurate. It took me hours trying to sort through everything that was said. The entire speech was very vague and Obama was all over the map. Obama will continue to preaching to the chior- people ignorant enough that hear only the key words and who believe that government envolvment is a good thing.

Obviously "sanity" you dont know much about health care in other countries. They DON'T get it done. Oh... they have health insurance, they just have to wait in line for health care if they are sick. Have you ever bothered to learn anything about the care in Canada or England? And of course, Europe has perpetual high unemployment because of the cost for their "free" health care.
The only way to fix health care is to put the purchasing power back with citizens. It is government involvment that has made it worse and driven up costs with mandates. We dont buy car or house insurance in order to have oil changes or paint the house. We buy it for catastrophic events. Thus, it would be better to have an HSA for routine procedures and true catastrophic insurance coverage.

What Obama isn't telling Americans is that we will be able to keep our existing coverage - IF we enroll by the start of his program. Otherwise, we can't. Private insurance will be gone for good in about 10-15 years, which is what he wants.

Also, you might want to ask the Canadians - who are coming to the U.S. for medical care because their government won't pay for the latest medications due to costs - what they think about their health care system.

Please, people, we are in danger of losing our Republic to a Marxist/Socialist form of government where your freedoms will be drastically curtailed. Call, Email or Fax your Reps and tell them: No GOVERNMENT TAKE-OVER OF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. We do need reforms but you don't have to destroy the whole building to put out a small fire. Obama is dropping like a rock in the polls and is desperate to ram this through before anyone can know all the details. Obamacare will be a job killer and a disaster for our country and our economy! Please call today and keep on calling!

Last night was another perfect example of a stupid person who is very glib. Talk, talk, talk, and say nothing of substance. Obama has only one goal, and that is to destroy the economy and the political system of the US. In fact, Barry "New Lies for Old" Obama is at war on all fronts to destroy the United States. You name it. Banks, auto manufacturers, Wall Street, health care, missile defense, apologies to foreign countries, quoting "the holy Quran", adding 20,000 to 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, GITMO, etc., etc., etc. He has called for no meaningful Federal program cuts to reduce the tax burden on Americans. The cur is an ENEMY of this country, and he hates you. He looks down on you. He thinks you are stupid. He must be slapped down like a dog. I'm hoping that citizens are beginning to wake up, and giving their elected representatives a call about this idiot. With your support, even the most numb-and-dumb Democrats will stir to consciousness, and oppose the tyrant.

Since when did President Barack Hussein Obama II care about the cost of anything the government buys? He let lapse his own request to cut $100 million in his administrative costs. I seem to recall a $787 BILLION stimulus during the 'worst economic situation since the great depression' but now it was not designed to work for us now. What a loser he is. Send out the dancing Bidens.

One pill makes you larger, another makes you small. Obama should take the pill that mother gives you. It does nothing at all!

Remember the joke about offering a woman five hundred dollars for sex?

She agreed, only to be asked if she would accept fifty dollars. When she protested, "What do you think I am?" She was told, We've already established that, we are only haggling about the price.

Obama is the guy who voted to make sure that babies who survived an abortion be terminated. How do you think Obama feels about terminating the elderly? Forced end of life counseling?

Obama has a record that doesn't cherish life. It doesn't matter what age you are.

Anyone for a handfull of pills?

In the Presidents examples he always illudes to no surgery! Like the tonsils "its alergies" WHAT? Or with cancer patients they need pain medicine not chemo? That is rationing of care! That is all they want to do (they=govt). Read Tom Daschels book on heathcare reform. He says in his book that he doesn't want money spent on inovation like pharma drugs and technology because it will be too costly! All I have to say is if this goes through good luck!

Hmm..It appears that Obama is convinced that he and his Harvard education, in LAW, is enough to dictate to the medical profession and the"folks" of this nation how, when and if they should give and receive medical care. Call me a crazy tax paying "folk," but I will gladly pay to keep my premium health care, avoid managed care, and decide with my own doctor when my tonsils need to come out!

Did you notice at the beginning of his presser he said he was going to talk about his "health care insurance reform" not his healthcare reform?

Obama is very cunning and has been listening to Frank Luntz and his "Words that Work" speech. He is trying to deceive the people of this country by dropping hot button words for ones less scary and offensive. Don't be fooled by this Marxist. He's very dangerous and only needs one term to do his work on this country. He is systematically destroying all Small Business, who create 97% of the jobs in this country, by taxing them into oblivion to finance his giant government take-over of health care. He is expanding the size of government at warp speed, and no one even paying attention to it. Wake up, before it's too late! Our country is becoming unrecognizable.

If this passes put Teddy Kennedy and Robert Byrd at the top of the "Death Counseling and Lethal Injection List" for the benefit of the economy and deficit reduction. We save the cost of their end of life expenses and apply it to the deficit which is how they want the rest of us "Government Unnecessaries" exist. We should all start wearing a yellow "Star of David" on our upper left chest to represent our "Final Solution Health Care" plan by Obama-Reid-Pelosi. Only an Ivy League educated elitist could concoct a stupid, inefficent, and destructive program as this.

Could you imagine should we all be chipped and the government just sends a signal to the chip.....which then gives you a fatal heart attack. CRAZY.....I don't think so.

I have joined many, many of my colleagues who have opted out of MCRE/MCAD, and have no intention of contracting with the coming Govt Option. The mandatory, limited fees for non-surgeons do not meet my overhead. The executive and legislative branches already know very well that more and more primary care MD's are doing the same, and that there is a growing shortage of GP's, and that it can only get worse the way this train is headed. Alternatives: raise the fee schedule for nonsurgical care (hold your breath), train and empower more "physician extenders" (PA's & NP's), or make MD's licences contingent on participation in the program regardless of the fees. If the latter, watch for physicians walking away from their licences.

Pres. Obama again displayed his form of smoke and mirrors before a fractured media group that was programed to toss softballs in the 55 minute non-info session. This empty suit mentored by power based enemies of our national design and purpose has hit the wall. It is true that a family of 4 pays about $6.5K more per year than a family in GB or Canada. Of course, you get what you pay for. Obama made the statement that by recovering this $6.K, we could pay for 2/3 of the healthcare bill. How would he "instantly" reduce the family premium by 40% by passing his healthcare bill? Would insurance companies suddenly decide to give the same benefits at half the cost? Obama is living in "La La Land"....

I don't want the government in any way involved in my healthcare. They can try to 'fix' the system but don't tear it down and overhaul it into a government-run boondoggle. It really isn't broken! And the cost will kill us. I had to laugh in the re-runs I saw of some of his rhetoric (lies) last night about not raising the deficit and he said "And I mean it!" That's like a child that's been lying and this time he says "Now I really mean it", but he's just lying again. Barry, you're 'transparent' remember - we see right through you. We now know your lying ways and we don't trust you or Pelosi or Reid - so get over it - we do NOT want this bill or any version even close to it. No illegal coverage (and check IDs), no rationing, no Healthcare Czar to oversee my care, etc. It's rubbish and Barry is a joke for putting so much time into cramming it down our throats. He looks even more foolish now - or as he said last "acting stupidly"!

I've never read anything by David Freddoso before, but I will from now on. After the speech, I wondered about that mysterious "Mayo Clinic Blog" President Obama spoke of. President Obama was insinuating that the Mayo Clinic was on board with his plan. Now I read that the blog was written a day before the president of Mayo came out against Obama's plan. Why not just put them on a floating piece of ice because the family (government) has decided you no longer can hunt for food (tax). Afterall, that was an Eskimo practice. I remember seeing that in a film as a child and trying to understand how any family could just leave grandma or grandpa behind.

Hi Mr. Obama, My name is Maddie. I am 69 and am still working, and I love my work and my LIFE. If you keep messing with everything, I will have neither. You see, I have been on Medicare for 4 years now--I also pay approx $400 per month for part B, Part D, Med Supp policy, dental, and vision coverage. Medicare will give me high tech, high dollar cardiac procedures, but what good is that if I can't see, can't hear, and can't eat because I have no teeth--that's what Medicare in its wisdom does not cover. I plan on living a long productive life, so if the "End of Life" strong armers/population controllers from the government come to see me, I will just tell them they have to come back some other time. Have a nice day!

Bingo! Obama was once asked if he believed in Reparations. He said, "No. Because it doesn't go far enough." He believes in Income Redistribution. This will keep those 40 million PLUS people dependent on the Government and will assure a Democrat majority for years to come. There is Method in his Madness. Obama is only remarkable in his arrogance. He doesn't address the people's concerns because we are oh-so stupid and don't know what's best for us and our families. Then he is a either a complete idiot or a liar when he claims that we can keep our insurance/doctor. If this goes through companies will drop insurance like a hot potato or fire all their permanent employees and make them contractor. Once everyone is on the Obamacare, the private insurance will all but go away for the richest who can afford the high premiums. Yes, there are things that need to be fixed in our healthcare system, but it doesn't need to be plowed under!

I have seen government run health care at it's finest. When my oldest daughter needed some dental work, we went to (as you would imagine) a dental office. As we were sitting there, a man came in with an excrutiating toothache. He needed a root canal. He had medicaid. The said "sorry sir, we can't give you a root canal, it's not an AUTHORIZED PROCEDURE but we can PULL THE TOOTH. I thought holy cow, I am glad my husband has good private insurance and a job. NO wonder the poor are missing teeth. The government took them.

What's interesting to me is the hidden meaning within the story that Obama gives. Is he referencing the red pill, blue pill as in Republicans vs. Democrats? It wouldn't make sense if it referenced the Matrix, even though it is highly ironic, but to follow that analogy even further the blue pill led to life long servitude to the Matrix with little more than an illusion in return. Where as the red pill led to enlightenment to the realities of the real world and the truth about what the Matrix really is. So maybe the blue pill cost half as much but does it really??

Current system is fraudulent

Jul 23, 2009

I had major reconstruction surgery on my knee. My health insurance company tried to say it was a pre existing injury. If my knee had a snapped acl and minicus I wouldn't of been walking around and going to work the past 3 years while I was on the health insurance plan. I had to sue them to get them to pay. If I wouldn't of won I would of been bankrupt. Lucky for me I have a close friend that is a lawyer. If not I would be bankrupt. The health insurance industry is complete fraud. The number one reason people go into bankruptcy is due to doctor bills they can't pay. I'm for this new health bill as long as they close the border. If illigals have access to this care then it's pointless because there not paying into it and the rest of us still pay for them.

All I have to do is think about a trip to my local DMV or the numerous negative experiences I've had dealing with government entities and that pretty much does it for me. Creating a massive bureaucratic juggernaut and funding the considerable salaries and lifetime benefits of a newly added cadre of government workers (who also incidentally, overwhelmingly vote Democratic) is not the answer to our healthcare woes.

People who constantly cite Western European models of socialized healthcare are missing one very important point. On the whole, politicians in those countries are not nearly as corrupt or power-hungry as ours are.

Let me get this straight... the man who spent the MAJORITY of his "career" as a neighbood organizer in the streets of Chicago is now a medical expert? Or is all this coming from Michelle? To review: 52% of the voters in this country elected a Socialist as our President. The only true glimpse of what was to come happened in a non-teleprompter minute of truthfullness with Joe The Plumber. Unfortunately not enough voters paid attention to what their candidate was telling us he was going to do if elected. We need to make the switch during the next elections and remove Obama's majority rule in Congress. I fear for our future if this time the majority is not paying attention.

And YES, doctors do end doing multiple of the SAME TEST because it is more money in their pocket. This has been widely documented.

Either way, no one is taking health care away from anyone who has it. They are only giving everyone a shot if they don't.

Are you okay with 40 million uninsured? That is a pathetic statistic. Are you okay with greedy insurance companies denying coverage because of "pre-existing conditions?"

If so, we'll see how you feel when you're denied care when you get ill.

Hospitals would then be able to circumvent national standards that everyone should be treated within 18 weeks of seeing their GP, according to the Health Service Journal." I don't know about the rest of you but I think 99% of Americans would throw a fit if a doctor in this country said "we'll make sure you get treatment within the next 4 and a half months". Why not take the blue pill that costs half as much? Because paying the extra for the red pill is what pays for all the research that will one day create a purple pill. I don't feel bad at all for the alleged 44 million uninsured. It has been proven that they vast majority of them are either someone who can afford it and chooses not to, someone who qualifies for an existing program (i.e. Medicaid) but is too lazy or dumb to enroll, or illegal immigrants.

We need to make something clear... The reason they can implement policies like this in Europe and Canada (ie surrendering too much power their governments) is because those governments are restrained from abusing their powers only by the presence of the United States. Look at the history of Europe. It has been one of tyranny and abuse. Their currently levels of freedoms and liberties are based upon the foundation of our own. Nowhere in the constitution is this kind of power allowed to the Federal Government. If we give up too much power to Washington there will be no good way to stop them from abusing it.

You are gonna get the government produced purple pill and the government is going to tell you that it cost half of the blue pill (1/4 of the red pill) and is just as good as the blue and red pill. When the purple pill is actually just a placebo pill that they will give you till you die.

I didn't read all of the comments...so if this is a repeat...sorry. Taking the blue pill was about loosing your identity and self and being part of the collective who lived to create electricity for the machines. Taking the red pill was about finding out your true identity and being an informed idividual. I took the red pill long ago and the truth is the American government has become by, for, and of the lawyers. There's only 1 reason those in power are mulling this over. They frickin' stand to profit off the backs of the American people. Always, always look to anyone who wants to 'help' with suspicion. MOST will have an alterior motive that profits them. The borrower is always the slave of the lender. I'll take my freedom with it's consequences, you keep the change.

It's so awesome someone else caught the red pill-blue pill reference. It was the only part of the President's conference that I caught. At the time I couldnt remember from the movie which pill did which so I made a note to check on it later because I wondered whether Obama would prefer to live a fantasy or in reality, then I changed the channel to watch the Tour. Its a great story that Obama favors taking the pill that keeps you in a fantasy; I guess he didn't do this purposefully to refer to the movie. I also caught the part where he was stumbling through trying to explain how giving free healthcare to a person with diabetes would save money because they could then see a dietition and get their diabetes controlled an not lose a foot (like people with diabetes that bad can be controlled with diet, what a moron).

Wake up people! This is a huge mistake to try to fix the system by getting the goverment more involved in the daily activity of doctors. The insurance companies should be regulated by the states more closely. The federal goverment was never meant to have the power they are trying to take and it is up to us to stop them and support states rights and the rest of evertything else should be up to us, the people of this great, glorious nation to do as we wish and live as we may see fit. Freedom is only free when you give it away.

i had government healthcare as a military dependent and was denied a procedure necessary to allow me a normal life simply because it was too expensive. my family had to beg a civilian surgeon to perform the operation, without it my life would have been shortened, less productive and miserable. what obama is offering is not the answer to high healthcare costs and certainly will do nothing to improve care. in britain cancer patients wait on average 9 weeks for chemo! as a consequence the survival rate is around 60% of what it is here. i'll keep my high priced insurance thankyou.

If he honestly believes he has a solution which can decrease costs and improve quality, that's great. I say, put your money where your mouth is President. Create a non-profit insurance company which does all the things he wants, with no federal funding, just its own revenue, and let's see how it does. If you want to fix the system, prosecute the criminals. Who are the criminals? The people who file multi-million dollar frivolous law suits, forcing the medical industry to carry outragiously expensive malpractuce insurance.

This man is just a liar. Read Page 16 of the Othrowup Health Care (Insurance) Reform (Insurance added because he changed the name of the plan a couple of days ago, you know, like the Stimulas was renamed when he realized we the people knew what he was doing). If you don't have insurance on the day his plan goes into affect, then your choice is the choice of public plan. In other words, you have no choice, you are forced in...........read page 16 for yourselves. For those who want to change, increase, decrease, etc. their insurance after the day the legislation is signed, the only change you will be able to make is to the public plan. In other words, you want change, you get it, it will be change to the public plan. Do you get it? The public plan will be mandatory for ALL, unless you are insured now and never make a change to that insurance.

We need REFORM not more debt.

I grew up in Britain under the National Health Service. I had to watch my Mother die at age 66 because after 55 she no long qualified for heart surgery. My best friend sits in a wheelchair waiting patiently for hip surgery, it has been 5 years so far. Under Obama's care a 30 year old illegal alien would qualify for surgery in front of a person over 50 who has paid into the system their whole life. This my friends sucks. This is nothing more than retribution and he thinks we are too dumb to notice.

This is "do as I say government" and don't ask questions. To those talking about the greedy insurance system we now have in place- who do you think put them in power? Could it be the government? Fixing heath care is a admirable task. I believe all elected officials should be required to participate in the same programs of health care and retirment that the rest of the American people do, without any fine print. I read an article on www.nygennews.com that said 15% of the population is uninsured, and that therefore, it is patently unfair, and makes little sense from any perspective to change the whole system for the minority. Therein lies the issue however. Minority "rights" at majority expense. More white guilt offerings to those who will not work.

If the article is correct, the savings from tort reform coupled with the efficiencies of competition in a deregulated health insurance environment would finance health insurance for the uninsured. Where is the discussion on that plan? On any alternative plan?

Obama is a typical product of his era. He cannot think beyond what is prepared for him. He's been spoiled rotten to the point of unwarranted arrogance, a Cassius Clay without the punch. And now we get to pay for his emptiness and weakness. Good job, liberal America.

Where is that pesky constitution that keeps getting in the way? Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves right now. Hey everyone, your current government hates your independence. Seal the border and enforce our immigration laws as we were promised in the 1986 amnesty. 23 years and I'm still waiting.......

1986, Ted Kennedy's quote: TAKE PARTICULAR NOTICE OF THE LAST SENTENCE!

The 7-12 million illegal aliens they toss around is woefully short. There are 20-30 million illegal aliens laying waste to this country.

At this point, even a badly run single payer plan is better than what the US has now.

My cousin with a medical condition and a 70 IQ indeed requires some help to survive. Nature only creates 3 to 10 percent of the population who are unable to support themselves physically or mentally as it creates 3 to 10 percent who are at the top of the scale. Like minded liberals would have us believe that 50 percent of us need government assistance to survive. Ironically this insidious "soft bigotry of low expectations" is at the heart of liberal dogma and Obama politics.
Therefore he/they say we all need medical care because we are just too incompetent to take care of ourselves. And BTW it just happens to give him more control over our us.

BHO's tonsillectomy comment was comically absurd. First of all, primary care docs who see sore throats don't even DO surgery- they give meds or refer out to ENTs! So there's not even a chance for all these evil, corrupt docs he's worried about to make a buck. . . a classic Obama straw man argument. Furthermore, anyone want to take a guess what the 2009 Medicare reimbursement is for a pediatric tonsillectomy? $242. That's right. So minute for minute, I'm pretty sure you're still better off spending your $200k education seeing the patient in the office than operating (especially considering the difference in potential malpractice liability). Actually, these docs are probably better off doing just about anything else beside treating patients in a government system.

Obama has already sown the seeds of his political demise. As we rapidly accumulate debt and have no genuine hope on the horizon for paying down the deficit we are careening toward a national disaster on the order of the fall of the Soviet Union. Debt, Spending, Deficits as a % of GDP... social programs growing and growing as the tax base shrinks. Only a fool or a misplaced ideologue would attempt to stare down the economic facts we face as a country. Our generation will NOT honor the unfunded promises and mandates of our fathers and mothers passed on to us like a negative inheritance.

The more I learn about Timothy Geitner the more nervous I get. Geitner had so much power over Wall Street as the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He hung out with the CEOs, Board of Directors and Chairmen of some of the biggest banks in the world. Geitner reported to the NY Fed Board which was composed of people who were under his purview but who would also benefit from any potential bailouts like the Bear Sterns bailout in May 2008. That was orchestrated by Geitner because Geitner felt the system was fragile and would cause too much risk to the economy. The economy was that way because some, if not all, of the Board members were not looking out for us, the public. And why was that? Money, money, money...

ylem

Jul 23, 2009

I almost think this whole economic crisis was created to fool the public so the bailout/stimulus money could flow. Wouldn't it be funny if this was the biggest con in history orchestrated by Geitner, a few bankers and a few politicians? With the help of Congress, like Reid, whose legislation help to change the rules in regard to mortgages for instance, greed grew. From what I understand, Geitner tried to establish close relationships with his charges in NY and isn't that how corruption takes hold? You see this with police who go undercover as drug dealers. It's not long before these cops are corrupted. Now, we have Geitner doing the same thing but on a much bigger scale.

ylem

Jul 23, 2009

Maybe he's a Madoff, but much bigger. Didn't everyone think Madoff was a genius who knew more than anyone? A good con artist like Bernie knew that and used that against his investors. No one could imagined a ponzi sceme that big and going on for that long. No one... Let's suppose it's true, that Geitner, the board members of the banks and a few politicians are pulling one over on us. Whose there to catch them?

Since when has the Federal Government been efficient at ANYTHING? If we fail to stop Obamacare, we'll end up with the healthcare presented in the movie "Idiocracy"...

We do not need a national health care system ran by the government. They have totally mismanaged medicare and medicade show do they expect us to believe they can manage a national health care system? Besides we are the only ones who will be using the system as you can bet the people up in washington will not give up their health care that they voted for themselves! If we can have the same plan they have then let's do it, but if not they need to slow down and think.

We get the blue pill, while he and Congress will continue to get the red pill! You see that equalization thing, only goes so far. Just like this is not about him, as he has excellent healthcare coverage, just as all of Congress has. We are apparently not deserving of the level of coverage that our politicians get! HAD ENOUGH YET????

You people are idiots.
And the writer of this article doesn't even grasp what the real meaning of healthcare reform is. When Obama says that there are cases where doctors make unnecessary procedures it's not some fanciful tale. Doctors do it because hospitals in America are purported to be profit making machines which simply doesn't make sense. Do you want to pay the police every time you call them? Or how about if your house is on fire? Should you need to call your insurance agency before they put out the fire?
You're idiots.
Look at all the other Western countries in the world, they have a public health system. As with everything in the world it doesn't work perfectly and there are costs involved but people don't have to make the choice between which finger to save because of costs.
Again your idiots.

Hey Guys, great comments. I definately see a common trend. America is waking up. Let's start talking less and walking more. It's time to take America and the White House back for that which both were founded. Life, LIBERTY, and the pursuit of happiness.

The writer misses Obama's point. Obama isn't claiming that doctors don't know what to do, he's saying that the "system" - basically, the insurance and high-end cost parts of it, are not working. People's experiences support that suspicion. Also, do you want insurance industry execs deciding instead of doctors, either?

Just a few weeks ago, Obama openly pointed to the government overseeing healthcare rationing for the elderly or infirm. During his highly publicized healthcare forum on ABC TV, Obama responded to a question from a woman who was concerned whether her 105-year-old mother will have access to health care. Obama at first insisted that she would but then said the government needs to step in and make end-of-life health care decisions for the terminally ill...

"At least we can let doctors know and your mom know that, you know what, maybe this isn't going to help. Maybe you're better off not having the surgery but taking the pain killer."

"Better off" with pain killers instead of a medical procedure? That's rationing plain and simple!

Ed, people dont have to make choices like which finger to save for costs in socialized healthcare, only because that decision is made for them, and usually it will not save either. I lived in 2 socialized systems for 30 years, and I prefer the US system. I had knee surgery which was immediatley performed and after my $100 deductable on my low cost PPO plan, there were no problems.
By the way you DO pay the police and fire departments. In fact you pay them every hour you work, even if you never use any of their services, ever.

For me, anything short of specifics -

I.E. "There will NOT be a Mandatory Insurance clause", and

"If you are unhappy with the Government Plan, you will be able to Opt Out at any time", and

"It will be designed to stay within the same cost playing field as private plans to prevent crushing competition"

is NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION to even consider gambling with our healthcare system.

Let's start the health program at the hostpital that Obummer was born at. I want to see the stamped and signed birth certificate like all the rest of us citizens actually have. You know signed by a doctor and with the place and time of birth and a county and/or state seal?

I think this guy is not a natural born citizen and this will be found out. His daddy was a British Crown Citizen and his mommy was only 18 when he was born, this alone rules him out of being "natrual born" His father was not an AMERICAN, he was a African Muslim studying in the USA.

As a physician treating many patients without compensation due to the lack of health insurance, I agree that a reform is needed, but I am absolutely insulted by Mr. President's speech. What kind of people does he think physicians in this country are? We train hard, work long hours, and are reimbursed less each day, we do not need the government to tell us how to better treat our patients.

Jul 23, 2009

It's funny that BO would mention the possibility that a doctor might perform a procedure that was not needed so that he could get paid more. My grandmother has told me many times that doctor's she has seen were putting in for reimbursement to Medicaid for procedures they did not perform. Each time, she called Medicaid to report the false charges and each time the government did nothing. Do you think a private insurance company would do nothing under similar circumstances??? NOT! BO stinks!!!!

"Unwittingly"? "Well-meaning"? This guy doesn't like America, it should be plain by now. And if he can't destroy us with debt, punish us with poverty, sicken us with healthmare, then by golly he'll try to have us cut each other's throats out with race war, as the Gates debacle shows. I think the American people have been through too much, and are grown too wise, to swallow much more of this guy's lethal tripe. Or to stomach what's already there.

Observations of Barry:
Lie whenever necessary. Most people will forget it anyway.
Promise a transparent administration. Then hold secret meetings and appoint over a dozen Czars to do what Cabinet Members are supposed to do. Is it constitutional? Barry doesn't care. Even Senator Byrd, a democrat, has questioned the need for Czars?
Smile, talk nice and apologize for the US to all world leaders. Then they will like us. Right? Barry you are so in over your head.
Move the Census into the White House under Rahm Emmanuel. He wouldn't cheat would he? You bet he will!
Invite the head of the Congressional Budget Office to the Whitehouse. Why? Because he is telling the TRUTH. Barry doesn't want that. He wants Big Government and Socialism, period.
We need to prepare for Impeachment of this naive, self serving, arrogant, idealogue. Remove him before he does any more damage to the United State.

I'm glad someone mentioned the phrase "unlimited power". That's all this is about.

Lately, I am constantly reminded of the scene in "Star Wars" where Windu has nearly defeated Darth Sidious and Anakin jumps in and helps destroy Windu. At which point, the new emperor laughs and crows: "POWER! UNLIMITED... POWER!!"

We're almost there, folks. This is America's payment for turning our backs on the Creator that our Founders recognized in the Declaration of Independence. Very sad.

(Yes, you COULD dust off your bible, but heck, there's a good TV show on tonight... What was that First Commandment again?)

The doctors are being accused of giving too many tests and nobody points out that they need to do that to protect themselves from the frivolous law suits with which they are bombarded. The government forced them into this by not doing anything about tort reform. Just another problem that the gov. has created.

There isn't any question that Barak is a pathological liar. He takes it to a new level. This is very easy seen by any objective observer, simply by looking through the transcripts of everything he has ever said, for as far back as you can obtain accurate data. The pattern is incredibly consistent. And of course there are other liars in politics, always have been. What makes it destructively pathological is the unprecedented degree to which the lying now extends, the highly irrational and completely unrestrained aspect of it, with lies that are unbelievably obvious and completely unnecessary. With that as a given, the bigger question is what to do about it, especially in a country where the citizenry has become nearly entirely powerless, having long ago abdicated almost all of its power to governmental entities that were never intended to manage as many aspects of our lives as they do today.

On a serious note, the difference between a red and blue pill could very likely be that the generic version is made in China or India, contains fake or toxic ingredients and can kill or harm many people. If Obamacare is shoved down our throats, you can expect to receive the cheapest, minimal treatment, if any at all, and ineffective or dangerous foreign made drugs.

Rather than talking about how doctors do things to make more money in our health care system maybe Obama should explain how his wife was paid so much salary by a not for profit hospital in Chicago when he became a senator. What a stupid article. Health care is the ONLY industry that can set prices by patient and not by service type. The medical industrial complex must be stopped from this type of gouging. We need National Health care but we need to be able to pay for it: how bout CUTTING THE FREAKING MILITARY BY THE SAME AMOUNT AS THE COST OF NATIONAL HEALTH CARE AND BRINGING TROOPS HOME FROM OVERSEAS. 2 birds for the price of one, and close down the global warmongers.
This will eventually happen anyway as US is broke-just like Rome, the US will FAIL.

What if Obama was promoting universal health insurance coverage through full employment? You know, implementing policies designed to promote capitalism, and meant to insure there were plenty of good, high paying jobs available for everyone. You said: "Unfortunately, there is exactly one thing that government can do to control costs in health care: it can insist on paying below cost."

That is not true. Since the gov't can dictate what it pays for, it can simply declare any treatment, medication, or even advice not covered, not indicated, or not available. That's rationing, and that's what is being done NOW in other countries under gov't-run healthcare. Obama wants the gov't to have the final say-so over who lives and who dies. There's nothing 'unwitting' about him

Admittedly, I do not have full knowledge of the proposed National Health Care system for the USA. The one here in the UK is called the National Health System (NHS). I can assure you that it is rift through with logistic and moral problems, both of which are interrelated. There are aspects of the system which has been put in place with good intent but is full of potential risk in relationship to good medical practice and peoples’ freedom and liberty. A typical example of this point is an original plan of the current labour (socialist) government to concentrate all health data on patients onto a centralized national database system. It did not work but wasted a lot of money! I can guess that the demonic power behind the real intent of this system have now chosen the US as the place to implement a system like this and then propagate it elsewhere on the globe.

Okay it is time for OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP. Some weeks back a caller to the Howie Carr show on WRKO suggested an OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP the purpose being to vote OUT all republicans and dems who have been in office more than 6 years. Several of us in NH are in full agreement with this and are on a blogging campaign to tell everyone to vote the new guy/girl in AFTER they have researched their qualificiations & backgrounds. We MUST get these "career" politicians out who are more concerned with their financial gain and partisan infighting than they are in working to help our country and its citizens. How about it? Anyone out there willing to get something started in their area? Then let Obama see what we of the silent majority can accomplish when we have been pushed to the limit.
