That 1,990-page Democratic health care bill? It's longer now; includes new government controls

It's become common practice to refer to the House Democrats' national health care bill as being 1,990 pages long. That's true of the bill introduced last week by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But now Democrats have added a 42-page "manager's amendment" to the bill. Some of the new language in the amendment replaces material already in the bill, but there are enough new provisions to ensure that the bill is now more than 2,000 pages long. And there will likely be even more additions to the bill before the final debate.

What's more important is what is in the new amendment. Much of it reflects Democrats' concerns that their bill would cause an increase in health insurance premiums. Remember when the House leadership, the White House, and sympathetic media commentators everywhere attacked the insurance industry for predicting that the Democratic bill would cause premiums to go up? The manager's amendment is, in effect, the House Democrats' admission that it would do just that. Their answer: more government control. The new language sets up a process for the government to monitor "unjustified premium increases" and threaten insurance companies with exclusion from the government-run Health Insurance Exchange if they exhibit a "pattern of excessive or unjustified premium increases." The government, of course, will determine what is "excessive" or "unjustified."

I wonder if the libs will ever admit this healthcare thing isn't about helping the people. It's about gaining more power. If this was about actually helping the people, they'd be looking at tort reform and other actual efforts to lower costs. Nope. This is all about yet another power grab.

I have lost all respect for our government officials, they lie so much, they don't know the truth!

The problem is how in heck do you get Congress to listen to common sense. I write my senator and my representative and I get back "F-Key" responses, and "I value your opinion." Baloney! They don't believe it and neither do I. Time to pull the plug on the swamp and drain it into the sewer. Come on 2010 and 2012.

I'm 'starting' to 'think' Obama's top domestic priority S/B JOBS. You know, to pay for this 'well thought through' forced health insurance plan..
The highest uninsured demographic: 18-29 year olds, not senior citizens.
The highest unemployed demographic: recent college grads.. how will they pay for 'strongarm' health insurance if unemployed?

So instead of increasing premiums, private insurance will just become unavailable.

That's what happens when price controls cap prices below cost levels. It's already happening with Medicare, many doctors simply won't accept any new patients who are on Medicare, because Medicare doesn't cover costs.

Price controls combined with benefit mandates = rationing and reduction in quality.

This equation has been known (and reproven) for decades. Only a population that has been propagandized for years would be ignorant of that simple truth.

Of course, every cost increase will be unjustified, if you didn't unionize your company.

Pelosi and Reid WILL pass this bill. They don't care if every moderate Dem gets thrown out, next year, because they are looking at the long term implication of getting 25% of the economy under the control of unions that will reliably vote Dem forever.

The bill is insanity incarnate. I started delving into it yesterday. So far, I notice the bill contains a provision mandating what percentage of every dollar received by insurance companies is spent on care. Honestly, as long as an insurer is financially solvent and pays honest claims in a timely manner, who is the federal government to tell them how to run their business? We are heading down a path that leads the U.S. deeper into the abyss of irreparable indebtedness, perpetual bureaucracy and an ineffective, paternalistic federal government.

Correction for my post above. The first sentence should read "...every dollar in premiums received by insurance companies..." to my post above.

Check out page 24 of the bill for a good laugh:
"(6) LIMITING PROGRAM EXPENDITURES.—The
Secretary shall, with respect to the program—
(A) establish procedures to protect against
fraud, waste, and abuse under the program;
and
(B) provide for other program integrity
methods.
---------
Hilarious. If Congress could eliminate "waste, fraud and abuse" so easily, why hasn't it been done with respect to Medicare and SS?

Someone who has knowledge of the new 1,900 bill, please answer this question: does the bill truly mandate through "medical loss ratios" that insurers spend 85 cents of every premium dollar on care? This sounds like a blatant attempt to push these companies into insolvency so that the "public option" is left standing as the sole option for care. So much for increasing competition.

Would being thrown out of the Health Care Exchange mean that Congress People would not be able to buy from those companies? If so, they will be enrolled in a Public Plan very very soon.

The public knew that Obama intended to implement what most people would call socialized medicine. The American people gave all political power to Democrats. Now, it is time for the people to pay the price for such outlandish foolishness!

Your doing a heck of a job there Bronie.. err Pelosi. Just keep working on it at least it gives them something to do. It will NEVER pass

Why will federal employees' be allowed to keep the plans provided by the private insurance carriers? There is very little difference between the plans that are available to the public and the plan options that federal employees have every November during "open enrollment". After they pass "Obamacare" the only way you'll be able to have a comprhensive health insurance plan is if you work for the federal government!

Should this surprise anyone??? I think not!! They want the bill so long that no one reads the darn thing. They want all of us to shut up and follow along like lemmings. When I'm reading only 2% of the uninsured is going to be able to take advantage of it then I say why even have the thing. This is just another way for the government to take over some and have it fail miserably, examples are Amtrack, Medicare and the Post office. Get a grip everyone and vote out these people who do not speak for us in 2010.

As long as you keep voting for career politicians, in either party, this is what you're going to get. Our government wasn't meant to be run by such people, but by ordinary Americans.

Michael Konkel

Sad part about all of this is that the health bill is part two of their grand scheme...health bill will ultimately drive the vast majority of all Americans to the government plan (read public option) but what no one is talking about is that the rationing boards, whatever you want to call them have been authorized, their chair has been authorized and they are well under way, thanks to the stimulus bill which no one read...these people will electronically visit patient records and advise doctorcs accordingly in line with bioethicist, ol' Zeke Emanuel (Rahm's brother) recommendations. Zeke has this 15 year old - 40 year old chart which shows that range to be the effective range of where medical money should go....seniors, tots, preteens, teens, you better not have issues..no one is going to carry you for a life time....seniors will have paid in the most and will lose the most.

Thank you our pinko president.

Elections have consequences and I pray that all of those who shoved this Kenyan born fraud down our throats get paid back for the evil they have inflicted on us with this man and his vile associates. The day after the election the Illinois lottery tried to tell us something when the numbers came up as 666. Now its very clear that someone was trying to show us what we had done..

everyone should just admit that this country is un-governable and while health care insurance reform is a nice idea, nothing worthwhile will ever be passed.
