The enormous looming deficit

By: Michael Barone

Former Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Holtz-Eakin writes eloquently of the potential for huge and yawning federal budget deficits if something like the House or Senate Democrats’ health care bills is passed. But you may see, hey, he’s a Republican, so why should we believe what he’s saying? Here’s one reason: Scott Winship of the Pew Economic Mobility Project, writing on the Progressive Policy Institute’s new progressivefix.com blog, says pretty much the same thing (PPI has long been a source of intelligent moderate Democratic policy proposals). Or read William Galston, domestic policy adviser in the Clinton White House, who writes eloquently of our “unsustainable fiscal future.” It’s not only Republicans who see the looming problem. The numbers are really stark, and really scary.

I kid you not -- from an article on the NY Times website today, on the national debt, the following is a comment that was posted by a reader that was tagged with an "Editor's Choice" label and thumbs up approval from over 120 readers:

"We need to charge the people who use society the most, the most taxes. If 95% of the wealth in this nation is owned by the top 1% then they should be paying 95% of the taxes as well.

We need to restore the 91% income tax rate for those making more than $3M a year, constantly updated to account for rises in income for the top of the top earners.

If we do these things, we can pay down the republican debt and stop giving all our money to foreign countries and wealthy treasury bond holders. That way, we'd actually have plenty of money to do whatever we need to do."

This is the reflexive response from Democrats and liberals to cure all of society's woes -- tax the "wealthy" (and of course spend it all, imprudently). Never mind that such taxes affect small businesses, discourage entrepreneurship and risk-taking that creates jobs, etc. It's all about exploiting class resentment and jealousy and taking money away from (mostly) hard-working people.

Guy, these are the same people who believe that you can take the profit out of medicine and pharma and get the same development effort and medical advances. I am sure, though, if you ask them if they would work for free, they would look at you as if you had two heads and not see the contradiction.
