The netroots agenda: War? What war?

It's not getting much attention, but the Netroots Nation conference (formerly known as YearlyKos, a spinoff from the left-wing website DailyKos) is going on in Pittsburgh this weekend.  Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg has conducted a straw poll of the participants and found that a majority of those surveyed, 53 percent, say they "cannot support a health care reform bill that does not include a public option."  Other results include word that most of the attendees are willing to compromise a bit on environmental legislation, even though it gives a lot of benefits to big corporations, and the finding that, amazingly enough, attendees voice near-unanimous approval, 95 percent, of the job Barack Obama is doing as president.

What's truly striking in Greenberg's poll is the degree to which the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have fallen off the progressive radar.  I attended the first YearlyKos convention, in 2006, and have kept up with later ones, and it's safe to say that while people who attended those gatherings couldn't stand George W. Bush in general, their feelings were particularly intense when it came to opposing the war in Iraq.  It animated their activism; they hated the war, and they hated Bush for starting it.  They weren't that fond of the fighting in Afghanistan, either.

Now, with Obama in the White House, all that has changed.  Greenberg presented respondents with a list of policy priorities and asked, "Please indicate which two you think progressive activists should be focusing their attention and efforts on the most."  The winner was passing comprehensive health care reform, with 60 percent, and number two was passing "green energy policies that address environmental concerns," with 22 percent.  Tied for eighth place, named by just eight percent of respondents, was "working to end our military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Then Greenberg asked which one of those issues "do you, personally, spend the most time advancing currently?"  The winner was health care reform, with 23 percent, and second place was "working to elect progressive candidates in the 2010 elections," with 16 percent.  In 11th place -- at the very bottom of the list -- was "working to end our military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan."  Just one percent of Netroots Nations attendees listed that as their most important personal priority.

Many observers have remarked that Obama's decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan, and also to escalate the campaign of targeted assassinations using drone aircraft, both in Afghanistan and Pakistan, will cause him trouble on the political left.  Indeed, some members of Congress have suggested that the president has just a year to show significant results in Afghanistan before lawmakers begin to pressure him to pull back.  But if the Netroots Nation results are any indication, Obama may have more room than previously thought on the war.  Not too long ago, with a different president in the White House, the left was obsessed with America's wars.  Now, they're not even watching.

The Iraq and Afghanistan wars were just a means to an end. And that end was Bush-bashing. The deaths of American soldiers made good theater for the liberals. All of a sudden the lives of American soldiers aren't as costly or as impressive since Bush has left office.

American military deaths only matter to the Left when it can advance their own political agenda. That much is clear.

As long as Obama can distract his constituents with a shiny object (ObamaCare, environmentalism, etc.) they'll dutifully obey their master and forget why they were so mad to begin with.

These nutroots are in a fog now that G.W.B. is out of office and the Bush-bashing has gotten old and tiresome. They will soon start eating their own. Watch them self-destruct in 3,2,1...

Progressives / liberals / statists hate war not because of their horror of war itself but because they find it a distraction from their domestic agenda. In their world they would like to think of the world as place (read "europe") to vacation or dream about. They fret about whether we are liked (rampant affiliation neediness)and would like to world to simply let them get back to their focus on social engineering back here in the USA.

Byron,

Your statement that "they hated the war, and they hated Bush for starting it" is backwards. They didn't hate Bush because they hated the war, they hated the war because they hated Bush.

The left realized that successful prosecution of the war would cement a conservative majority and lead to the destruction of their domestic agenda and so they did everything possible to secure defeat. Right down to Harry Reid declaring defeat at the doorstep of victory.

Sadly, it seems to have worked out for them and, now that we have a leftist administration, they've moved on to what really matters.

Perhaps they've forgotten about the wars. Wouldn't surprise me since our ever-so-diligent MSM has decided they aren't worth reporting on anymore. The MSM has been completely burying any negative war news in their effort to insulate Obama from anti-war critics.

Kevin

Aug 15, 2009

Yeah, it's amazing how the MSM stopped the daily reminders of how many soldiers had died in the war. Hmm, I want to say that started around January 20 or so. Nah, just my imagination.

johnt

Aug 15, 2009

As noted above, the MSM as decided that the war, which in different forms and places will continue for years, must now be under reported, their task of damaging Bush being accomplished.
This means that the slugs of the Left are not being told what to think on a daily basis. Therefore they, the Reality Based Community, don't think it.

Besides, there are no core principles on the left. The war, free speech, honest & open government and more are subservient to the unattractive, primal urges of leftists and so quite disposable.
It's about power and dominance, if the slugs can't hold it themselves then the government under Obama will serve as a good surrogate.
They'll do what they're told and believe it.

Hypocrisy defines the Democratic Party, which makes their credibility non-existent.

ben grimm

Aug 15, 2009

The issue of war is not a real issue to the left.

It was a drumbeat they used to take the air of the republican agenda. The angriest and meanest people I know are liberals.

They love war. They love death. They just do not like being out of power.

Q_Mech

It's even more sinister than it looks. bin Laden repeatedly stated in his videos that al Qaeda's goal wasn't to militarily defeat the US, but to cause casualties so that the Democrats would withdraw our forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. The Dems knew this, yet worked as hard as they could to advance al Qaeda's goals. The Dems sided with al Qaeda to win the presidential election, as shown by their sudden disinterest in the topic - they got what they wanted. The Democrats are exposed - they will do ANYTHING for money and power, even supporting al Qaeda against American troops in the field.

chilloutyo

Aug 15, 2009

Most Democrats believe in a moral relativity that says whatever you say or do is OK, as long as it supports the progressive cause. Under this belief, one cannot tell a lie or be hypocritical.

MIdas

Aug 15, 2009

Just goes to prove what we said all along - it was never about the war, it was about Bush-hatred, period. Once Bush was gone, none of these hypocrites cares about ending the war - they never did. It was always, only about damaging Bush in any way, shape, or form. These nuts have the intellectual and moral honesty of, well, they have none.

Not just Americans either... if anyone was wondering why they kept blowing up Iraqi markets and such... Just give the US left more Bush created deaths to throw in our faces...

The nutroots don't care about anything as long as one of their beloved "progressives" are doing it.

Eat babies, nuke cities, install cameras in the home, it's all ok if one of the egotistically superior "elite" is doing it.

Ignatz

Aug 16, 2009

Agreed; all the above. Which is why I left the Democratic [sic] Party after September 11th, when the scales were ripped from my eyes, and I saw with horror what disloyal, Quisling devils they were. And how fast they threw their alleged principles onto the bonfire, like Nazis burning books: women and gays abused and killed under Islam? all of a sudden, it was "their [non-Anglo] culture," and all was forgiven.

I knew there were America-haters in the Dem. ranks; I just hadn't realized they were the majority.

Now I detest them.

FGH

Aug 16, 2009

Byron York's observation and the cogent comments are far too under-discussed and under-used with effect by conservatives. Leftists need to be continually stripped like this to reveal their naked "ends-justify-the-means" goal for power above all else. They advance the greatest precisely when their hypocrisies are not challenged or exposed.

I think most of you are wrong. The Left did care about the war. They saw it as a way to give a black eye to the America they hate so much. The were pracitally giddy everytime some savage detonated a bomb and killed an American. Now that America has put the Messiah in office they can not root against us. I'm a proud American regardless of who is in the White House or Congress. The Left's loyalty is to their agenda, not the country.

Funny, I just posed this question last week to a guy who works for me (still a lib, but slowly coming around). I asked him how the casualties were coming along in Iraq. He thought for a moment and admitted he really hadn't heard that mentioned in quite some time. I asked if it perhaps it had been 7 months or so, and he said it sounded about right.

If people want to be libs FINE (well, not REALLY, but just for my purposes here!), but I'm danged if I can show them even a hint of respect if they're unwilling to acknowledge the 'leftness' of the MSM. My employee has long since yielded that point to me!

What a load that is republicans hid behind the troops and wrapped themselves in the flag calling everyone un American and other names . Funny thing though they didnt go sign up in the same numbers to fight those wars.In fact they lied us into one . And lets not forget some of the troops that came home ran for office as democrats . Republicans like war as long as their kids dont have to fight in them . And look at your leaders how many vets are there 3, 4 . WOW

Both Democraps and Repukes are pro-war. They'll just attack wars started by the other party.

Many Repukes did the same with Clinton's Balkan wars.

Only right-wing morons (see several comments above) fail to see this.

I would like to defend the left just a little bit, but I am not talking about mainstream liberals or Democrats. I am talking about the small segment of us who do understand that wars under Obama are just as bad as wars under Bush. This segment (often referred to as the “loony left” by mainstream pundits and politicians) has the audicity to recognize that Obama is continuing the worst policies of George Bush. And for that, we get labeled as radicals and extremists by the mainstream liberals. Only in a political system as warped as ours can the person who stands by principles be labeled the “nut-job” while the hypocrites are considered rational.

LMAO, Cons seriously need to step up and take responsibility for their war in Iraq, which led to the death of more than one million people - instead of claiming that 'Dems' were responsible. People opposed Bush's war because genocide is immoral, not for reasons of partisan politics. Grow up.
God Bless America.

Agreed for the most part about the MSM ignoring the casualty count but I believe they still do it at the end of Nancy Grace's show (with a memorium of a deceased soldier). Other than that...

Aug 19, 2009

This is a completely meaningless article. Daily Kos is, of course, a strictly partisan site. Those who participate in that site, by so doing, declare that they value party power over any principle. Those Kossacks who participate in Daily Kos are even more self-selected for rabid partisanship. Daily Kos has shifted to the right even faster than the Democratic Party as a whole has, following an extremely short sighted logic of political power.

Yearly Kos is the last place to take the temperature of the Left. Much of the Left is increasingly fed up with both Obama and the New Dems. There will be a powerful challenge to the Duopoly very soon in America, a real opposition party to the Corporatists, a Populist Progressive People's Party.

To hell with Kos and the New Dems. They are already irrelevant.

My intense anger over the dollars and bodies this country uses up in criminal activities overseas has been #1 on my list for decades.
The only thing I got from this survey is how terribly susceptible and gullible the general population is to continual 30 second sound bites, talk radio etc it must endure 24/7.
I believe if the right wanted to invade Honduras, all they would need to do is focus it's media war machine and soon we would be building monster bases and who knows what size embassy.

Aug 19, 2009

Being disappointed, to say the least that the Democrats, now in power, wage war the same as the Republicans, is plenty of reason to abandon the Democrats. However, it is no reason to join the Republicans. Maybe it's time to trade the futility of supporting someone who won't do what you want for the "futility" of joining a 3rd party?

Chris Dowd

Aug 19, 2009

Of course "progressives" don't care- or back these useless wars for the aggrandizement of DC. There is no "antiwar" party in this country as both parties are tools of a Beltway oligarchy. The fraud "conservatives" did the same thing under Clinton- nominal opposition to his criminal wars and then - once Bush the Dumber was elected they became brain dead warbots who associated "conservatism" with mindless support for the sainted holy fed gov twoops. Bravo. You are all a bunch of DC loving hypocrites- Dems and GOPERS.

SlimDown

Aug 19, 2009

There is no difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. There is one political party, and it is a War Party. It will wreck health care and the economy with the same combination of stupidity and incompetence with which it botched its wars. Next election, let's kick them all out.
